Beer is more than hops, malt, water and yeast. Brewing a great beer is a fine balance between art, science, hard work and fun. Dovetail Brewery strives to bring “old world” traditional craft beer to a modern American generation. A dovetail joint is used to create a stronger bond so does fusing traditional beer making with modern production practices to produce a superb product. The design of Dovetail centers on three interwoven principles: production, consumption, and growth. Production being the most important step, and the most awe inspiring aspect, it was necessary that the tap room feel connected to the brewery to showcase the brewing and care that went into the foamy drink. The atmosphere of the taproom evokes a casual neighborhood space to hang out with friends and enjoy a smooth delicious drink after a long day’s work. Comfort being the optimal setting to enjoy a delicious beer, the design incorporates warm colors with natural building materials to create a cozy drinking space. Future growth will include a bottling area, expanded barrel fermentation and expansion of the tap room into a beer garden on the rooftop. Layout of the brewery is set up for easy equipment upgrades and expansion for the tap room.
The Den Theatre is a multi-complex interdisciplinary arts venue master planning project. Throughout the building, lobbies serve as the central congregation point for multiple theaters that promote discussion, creativity, and community. The master plan focuses on organic ow and growth of the complex as spaces are obtained. Renovations to existing buildings include upgrading the existing structure to meet current safety standards while still maintaining the existing historical character of the buildings. Alterations to the existing oor plan allows for increased capacities of each theatre while not compromising on lobbies as a community hub. The Den Theatre complex reects the social and artistic character of Wicker Park and the greater Chicago area.
Smyth & The Loyalist presents as a confluence of artistry, warmth & community. Smyth showcases the finesse and care of a home cooked meal with the presentation of an artisan. The informal setting provides guests with a level of interaction during preparation that promotes transparency between the chef and customer. By gaining insight of the process, we see the care with the crafted meal being treated as a theatrical performance. While casual does not equate compromise, the Loyalist generates an ambiance of casual craft. The Loyalist promotes a community space for guests to come and go as they please with a charming atmosphere that matches Chicago West Loop. Design of Smyth & The Loyalist centered on the idea of the “approachable artisan.” Creating a layout that gives the customer a premium dining experience while allowing a glimpse into the selection, energy, and persistence that is required to construct meals.
Crosstown Fitness is a high intensity interval training facility that focuses on personal fitness goals that are encouraged through group exercise. A focused training area and juice bar are additional features to help reach various types of fitness goal. The Crosstown layout promotes large group exercises in circuit training formation but allows each member a clear full range of motion. Light penetration and a clear sightline was key to creating an illusion of a larger space. Mirrors are placed along the length of the fitness area with shorter equipment to further increase the sensation of open space to exercise.
THE CENTER
The Center hotel and ďŹ tness facility aims at creating a link between tourism and the community. Tourism is about connecting to a place, experience and lifestyle--the type of life that someone would want to live. Connecting these two aspects of a city can create a comforting atmosphere for tourists, forms a bond with St. Joseph that can develop over the length of their vacation. The Center aims to unify tourists and locals by integrating a restaurant, ďŹ tness center, and community art space along the riverfront.

Berrien Springs Charter Township approached the Andrews Urban Design team with a challenge for rezoning the M-139 corridor that runs through the village and township. In anticipation of the expanded water and sewer services, the township’s zoning needed to be addressed alongside the university’s development and various private investments. Issues with the existing zoning were: non-conforming structures, uncoordinated zoning between the village and township, future flexibility, e ciency of land use, and future expansion of the M-129 corridor. The main design challenges faced were: creating a structure that allowed future development without “down-zoning” current landowners, creating zoning that is in keeping with the village’s current bucolic setting but will allow for expanding development, landscaping, promote existing growth, and walkability. All of these design changes were implemented to allow for development within the next decade. The Andrews Urban Design team developed a form based code overlay plan that allows for design, property setback standards, and landscaping that focuses on the village’s current ambiance while allowing for future development along the M-139 corridor.
