WHAT TO DO FIRST– do not panic 1. After you’ve been assigned to your room, you should fill out the Student Personal Information Form completely and return it to either Dean’s Office representative. 2. Make sure that your room is fully equipped and all the furniture and accessories are there, go over damages with the housekeeper on your floor (MonFri, about 7am to 3pm). Report any leaks or problems with furniture to the administration. 3. Check if your phone is working. Make sure you were given all the information (IP address, Subnet mask and other info) regarding how to connect the Internet. Email support at pums@ump.edu.pl with problems. 4. Before you connect power to your computer, make sure that the power cord can handle the local power supply of 220V, otherwise you will burn it. Most new laptops are able to handle this and have a transformer built in the power cord, but check to be sure. You will also need is an American to European socket adapter. The local electronics store, Media Markt has usually adapters in stock, or, as a last resort, you can ask to borrow one from an upper classman.

5. By the time you get to your room and unpack, the money exchange places might be closed. The easiest way to get Polish currency is by using your ATM card at one of the ATM machines. They can be found at Piotr i Paweł (a local grocery store), or next to the entrance of the Army School on the corner of Bukowska Street and Polna Street. An international withdrawal fee (may be different for each ATM) is charged every single time you make a withdrawal. The closest Money Exchange (Kantor) is located on 76 Dabrowskiego Street, on the right hand side as you walk towards the open market. 6. To call your parents from the public telephone you will need a phone card (karta telefoniczna). Phone cards can be purchased at the nearby gas station or Piotr i Paweł Supermarket. 7. First day of shopping can be done at Piotr i Paweł right behind the Eskulap dormitory. 8. Last but not least, there is no easier way to get the most information about our school and its curriculum than to attend all of the orientation activities organized by the Dean’s Office and your upper classmen. They are one of the best resources you will have here.

INFORMATION ABOUT POLISH VISAS You should have received information from the Visa Office representative at Orientation. For further information, especially student visas go to: http://www.polandembassy.org/ If you did not get a student Visa before leaving your country of residence you may be in Poland illegally, and you should apply for temporary residence directly to the regional office of the provincial governor at 17 Plac Wolności Street, 4th floor, room #8. Call them for more info: (061) 854 17 21, they can speak English.

INFORMATION ABOUT HEALTH INSURANCE The representative from the Polish National Health Funds (NFZ) should have provided information on getting health insurance in Poland at orientation. Health Insurance is free if you have Polish citizenship. You will need to have a PESEL number, which can be found in your passport, to apply. If you do not have a PESEL in your passport you can apply for one. Please note that the application process can take up to 4 weeks, so do not wait with applying. If you do not have Polish citizenship, you can still be insured under NFZ for a fee, which was under 40zl/month this past year. Make sure to also set aside enough time for the application process for your health insurance as it requires going to multiple locations in Poznan. To get you started, go to the NFZ regional office: at 14 Piekary Street nr. 15 in Poznan, or use the NFZ website for other info: http://www.nfz.gov.pl Note: You can also insure yourself in your home country, but make sure that the plan covers emergencies abroad.

INFORMATION ABOUT TELEPHONE The telephone in your dorm room provides free calls to other dorm telephones in Medyk, Aspirynka, Eskulap and Karolek. You are also able to receive incoming calls on your room phone without paying the setup fee. If you wish to place calls to phones outside the dorm, contact the management for further information. Most students, however, find it more convenient to get a cell phone. If you do get a cell phone and are a Polish citizen you can get ‘abonament’ (plan). The cell phone itself will be much cheaper but most require you sign a 1-3 year contract with the company from which you purchased your phone. Most students find it is more convenient to use Pay-As-You-Go. With this option you must buy a phone (starting at about 150zl), SIM card, and phone credit which you must add to regularly to ensure that you get to keep that phone number. There are 3 cell phone service providers in Poznań: Era, Orange, Plus and others. SIM cards are available at any newspaper stands; simply ask for “zestaw startowy” and specify which service provider you want to go with. If you decide to bring a cell phone from home, be sure it is a GSM phone, which has a SIM card, and not a CDMA phone. The type of phone you are using depends on your provider, so check with them if you are unsure. Finally, the phone itself must be 'unlocked' so that you can use other SIM cards here, which is necessary to avoid international roaming charges. Calling from a cell phone to a landline (and vice versa) is also more expensive than landline-to-landline or cellular-to-cellular. Please note that Poland uses 10-digit phone numbers. All phone numbers within Poznań start with 061 or 051 (or just 61 or 51 if calling from a cell phone). You may also wish to invest in a headset with microphone so that you can use Skype, which can be downloaded for free from http://www.skype.com/ to communicate with your family and friends internationally. This popular option is free, as long as both parties are using Skype, although it is also possible to use the paid features which allow for very inexpensive international calls. NOTE: While pay phones are generally available in Poland you will need a special phone card to use them. PHONE CARDS (including the chip variety used at Medyk) are best purchased at the post office! They also have good deals on international phone cards called TelePin. 6

FOOD & SHOPPING FOOD There are many really nice restaurants in Poznań. Below, you’ll find URLs to web pages with addresses to restaurants, and some restaurant reviews. If you’d rather explore on your own, you can always visit Stary Rynek and the streets around it. http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/poznan/en/category?chid=142 Missing a few, but a good selection is available. Brief reviews and price range information. http://www.city.poznan.pl/mim/strony/turystyka/class.html?id_cz=6117&id_ klasy=91&lang=en Listing of restaurants, no reviews. http://chefmoz.org/Poland/WP/Poznan/ Listings by neighborhood or alphabetically by restaurant name. No reviews. SHOPPING First of all, be aware that each pharmacy (Apteka) is completely independent from any other store, including ‘drugstores’. Furthermore, each pharmacy is its own company, so you will often find price differences between them. Make sure to check expiry dates on medication you buy – if it’s much cheaper than other places you looked, it may be expiring soon. The following is a short list of places to shop. There are other malls and markets you can visit, as well as boutiques all along Polwiejska Street in the Old Market (Stary Rynek). PIOTR & PAWE Popular supermarket that has a nice selection but not as large as the aforementioned supermarkets, but has the convenience of having multiple locations across the city. The closest one is behind the Eskulap. Other locations include the basement of Stary Browar and the Pozna Plaza.

It includes trains, buses for travel within the city, and trains and buses for traveling longer distances around Poland and neighboring countries. (http://www.city.poznan.pl/mim/strony/turystyka/transport.html?rhs=transport&lang=en) Tramways and city busses Bus and tram stops are easy to recognize: they are mostly green shelters with the MPK logo. They are scattered around the town. The closest stops to the dorms are: for the bus - on Bukowska street just to the left from the intersection with Polna, for the tram - on the corner of Przybyszewskiego and Grunwaldzka streets (past Eskulap). Trams stop running about 11pm nightly!!! All the stops have a list of streets it stops on along the tram/bus line route (but no diagram), as well as the time of arrival at the stop and estimated time of the journey to the chosen destination. You can obtain a copy of the time schedule of specific bus/tram lines at the train station. Don’t forget that during the weekend the bus and tram lines have significantly reduced service!

TRAVEL There are many ways to pay bus/tram fares. You can use a time ticket or purchase a monthly/yearly pass. The price depends on the ride time or the number of stops. Keep in mind that you pay for the how long you are on the tram based on the schedule, however, during the peak, those times are designed to be longer. Only if something unexpected happens you are excused from paying for overtime. You can also buy tickets for 24hrs, a week and so on, or choose to buy a monthly pass as well (there are passes covering the entire transportation net). You can buy a pass that can last several months (3, 6 or 12). To do this you will have to visit Kupiec (between Stary Rynek and Stary Browar), bring a passport sized picture and fill out the form provided to you. Tickets are sold in kiosks (usually located right next to the stops), some shops, and MPK outlets. In general all these places are marked by stickers with the MPK logo at the front door, windows, or walls. You should punch the ticket immediately after the vehicle begins to move. There is a special discount for students on all the tickets. Make sure that when you buy them you ask for the ticket for students, and don’t forget that you have to have the student ID with you! You can only use the tickets marked with a ‘U’ if you have your ID (versus the ones marked ‘N’). The city transportation (bus/tram) is 50% less then the normal fare. Important note: you are not eligible for the discount if you are 26 or older, even though you are in school! In such a case you have to buy a regular ticket. Frequently, you will see the controllers either traveling inconspicuously along the way, or entering the bus. They check the tickets and IDs qualifying you for discounts. The fee is high and usually there are no exceptions for paying them as soon as any irregularities are found. Also make sure check your student ID for the stamp from the Dean’s Office to make sure that it does not expire during your travels. Useful bus lines: The ‘A’ bus will take you all the way across the river to the M1 shopping center, on it’s way back you would have to get off on the stop “Polna/Szpitalna” which is about 5min from the dorms. Since the ‘A’ is an express line a single ticket costs 1,30zl. for 10 minutes – the cost of two regular tickets.

TRAVEL Useful trams: The most useful trams lines are #6 (goes to PKP, PKS, Multi-kino) #13 (goes to Kupiec Poznański - very close to the Old Square) and the #15 (goes to the Poznan Plaza). Those were the trams we used most often last year. This summer the city has been repairing many tram rails and the trams are running on temporarily altered routes, so before you jump onto a tram make sure that it actually goes where you want to go. Also at times, a scheduled tram may not come for various reasons and you may need to wait for the next one on the schedule. Keep this in mind when travelling for tests/exams. The public transportation in Poznań is operated by Miejskie Przedsiebiorstwo Komunikacyjne (MPK). To know more - about exact connections and prices - please visit their site at www.mpk.poznan.pl At the Rondo Kaponiera you can purchase a student card (KOMkarta), valid from September – June and good for unlimited rides on all tram and bus lines, for 242zl. Taxicabs Poznan has a wide selection of taxicab companies. You can call a cab on the phone or send an SMS. They are much less expensive from those standing on the posts and much safer. The most popular among the students are “96-22” and “9623” (the porter will call the latter for free for you). The drivers are friendly, arrive shortly after the call and offer acceptable prices without trying to cheat you. If you call a cab, please try to wait for it to arrive or call to cancel it, rather than jumping in another cab and making the driver wait around for you needlessly. The company may choose to blacklist your cellphone if you don’t show up for an ordered cab. Several cab companies offer discounts for returning customers, so inquire about “Karta Stalego Klienta” if you think of using cabs often and keep it on you to show to drivers.

TRAVEL Trains Using trains is the most convenient means of long distance transportation in Poland. They are inexpensive, reliable and reach many destinations. There are four types of trains available Express- reaches only large cities and often makes only 2-3 stops before reaching their final destination. They are the most expensive, but also the safest, and the definite advantage is a duration time spent on the train. Intercity-the same as express, the only difference is that they require a prior reservation and they don’t not have student discounts. Fast train (pośpieszny) - stops in bigger towns. It is probably the best option, since they are much cheaper, don’t require reservation, and reach the destinations in reasonable time; however, they may be crowded, especially around the holidays, and you may end up standing for the duration of your trip. Local(osobowy) - stops at every station. They are good for traveling short distances, since it may be irritating to be stuck on the train for hours before arriving to your destination. Poznań has a few train stations, the biggest one called “Poznań Główny”, and located three bus stops away from the dorm, along tram line #6. You should purchase the ticket in the cashier window, specifying the time of the departure, the place you want to go, and the student status qualifying you for a discount (again you can claim the discount if you are not older than 26; otherwise purchase a regular ticket). If you won’t have the time to buy a ticket at the cashier, you should inform the conductor right at the beginning of the ride about it and he will write you one, however the price will be slightly higher. For the faster trains, you can purchase your tickets online by going to https://bilet.intercity.pl/irez/ and changing the language to English, then you will have to open an account. You have to have a printer to be able to complete the purchase since you will need to bring the copy of your ticket with you on the train. A note on safety: when you buy a ticket, the best option is to travel in second class. Even though first class is a little more comfortable, you are alone in the compartment, making yourself a good target for thieves. In general, pick a compartment occupied by a few people; just use common sense when deciding if 20

TRAVEL the party is acceptable to share the journey with you. Keep in mind that it’s always safer to travel in groups. For nicer trains, you will have a seat assignment. You should make sure you found your seat: the right cart number and then the very seat. Traveling by train PKP “dworzec centralny” in Poznań at 1 Dworcowa Street You can visit their web site at www.pkp.pl. Another good site is www.polrail.com Note: Remember that students are entitled to 30% discount but you must have your student ID card “legitymacja” with you while traveling. If you are still using an ID from abroad (you won’t get the new one up until October), you have to have one of the international student cards. Buses They are comfortable way of traveling short distances. They are much cheaper than trains but are slower. The most popular bus operator is PKS (the station is located four stops from the dorm). The service is well developed and they can take you whenever you desire to go. Tickets can be purchased at the bus station in advance or from the driver when boarding the bus, however seats are not always available. Traveling by bus PKS Poznań 17 Towarowa Street nr.19 Information tel. 061-833-12-12 You can find out the schedule at www.pks.poznan.pl There is a 35% discount for students but not on every connection, so when purchasing a ticket be sure to ask about it. On most lines, you must be under 26 to get the discount. Walking Visit http://mapapoznania.wlkp.com.pl/ for a searchable map of the city. NIGHT LIFE Medical School Nightlife? You can have one! After studying hard you will want to enjoy yourself so try the city: you may actually enjoy it. It is inexpensive for the most part but, like every city, there are expensive places. Some destinations can be overpriced, however, they typically have English-speaking staff and menus. A good place is the Stary Rynek or Old Market Square. It has lot of quality bars and clubs, well taken care of and secure. Ask upperclassmen for local favorites in and outside of the Rynek and go explore! Cabs are a quick and easy way to get around the city when dark. Enjoy Poznan at night, Polish people like to have fun, just remember to be aware of your surroundings as you are in a new city. RECREATION & ENTERTAINMENT Movie Theaters There are many theaters around the city, a few really large ones, and some that are much smaller and generally show older movies or independent productions. If you would like to see what they are playing, you can take a walk to the Rialto, which is a small movie theater near McDonald's on Dabrowskiego. Near the entrance is a bulletin board with a listing of all the small theaters in Poznan and what they are showing. You can also check online at http://www.city.poznan.pl/mim/strony/turystyka/ class.html?id_cz=18&id_klasy=163&lang=en However, this listing may not include all the small theatres.

ADVICE FROM UPPER CLASSMATES Take notes in class. Write right on the handouts. Keep the handouts in order in folders. If you miss a class, get the handouts. (Physiology especially) Szymon Sikorski Study to learn for yourself, not to pass their exams. Hasan Badday Good people, very rich culture. People in the community are very friendly. Go to classes. Beer is .5$. Joseph Ejiofor Need to study everyday and not get behind. Anonymous Definitely get the points in physiology. Look at your anatomy atlas every day for 5 minutes. Try taking the bus and tram instead of taxis; you’ll see more of the city, culture and save a lot of zlotys. Ewa Wojewoda Start reading early & go to lectures, especially for biochemistry, embryology and physiology. Get books as soon as possible, BRS series is good (esp. for review). Try to allocate time to relax and get out of the dorms/ apt. every so often, even if it is just a walk. When you get sick, try to get better (see a doctor if necessary); don’t ignore it. Lizzie Vassar Keep up with everything and make a study schedule for each exam. It helps. Oxana. Live in the dorm at least during the first year. Bring a laptop and an Ethernet cable. It's nice to have your own bedding. For gross anatomy, buy Netter's Atlas and the BRS only. Concentrate on biochemistry and DO NOT put off physiology - start reading Guyton ASAP. Dorota Krajewski For those of you away from home for the first time… you probably will get really home sick!! But don’t worry!! As each day goes by, being in good old Poznan gets easier. First year will fly!!

ADVICE FROM UPPER CLASSMATES Kamila Bekasiak Please remember that you will not make it through on your own. Treat your fellow classmates and professors with respect. Cheating will always catch up with you and will punish you in the future. Let’s hope that the punishment will not involve any of your future patients. Remember that you represent the people in this program. Sebastian Tume Start studying for Step 1 from the first day of your classes. Make it a point to know First Aid for the USMLE thoroughly from cover to cover. It will be your responsibility entirely to prepare yourself for this exam. Keep up with the work! Ola Orkiszewska Use BRS, First Aid and Kaplan as soon as possible with all classes. Gerry Vander Velde Three simple rules to live by: 1) Move off-campus, 2) Make friends in Poznan outside of medical school, 3) Buy 'First Aid for USMLE Step 1' and start memorizing it from the first day of medical school. SAFETY AND SECURITY Just because this topic is at the end doesn’t mean it’s the least important – but you’ll find it fast since all you’ll have to do is flip to the back of the booklet. First and foremost: always lock your dorm room door when you’re leaving. Even if you’re only going across the hallway to the kitchen, or next door to your neighbor for half an hour (and think you will hear anyone in the hallway). Also make sure you close your window completely and close your blinds and turn off your lights when you leave, especially if you live on the ground floor. You may also wish to lock your door when you’re inside your room (which is recommended by the dorm administration). Try to avoid walking alone at night – especially in poorly-lit areas such as alleys, parks, etc. The main emergency number in Poland (their version of ‘911’) is 112.
