SUKKAH CITY - Scened Sukkah SITE Union Square Park, New York PROGRAM The sukkah is comprised of a light bamboo frame, and a skin of tensioned fabric. The sukkah may be placed in any orientation within the city. It proposes a way of entry on three sides. The largest wall behaves as a surface to showcase backlit activity, giving significance to moments of ritual and gathering as they unfold. While the urban façade provides a consolidated view into the lives of characters within, the sukkah is the rear window, and may be oriented and reoriented into a series of vignettes throughout the city. Gatherings convene at a table where occupants sit over meals and social activity. They are provided with five small seats of the same bamboo construction, which may be tucked away beneath the table after the shades are drawn and activity fades into the night. Upon entering the sukkah through a narrow opening, there is a moment of reflection before being fully enclosed by the structure. Within a tall and narrow space, the occupant has no option but to gaze above through a lattice geometry of reeds, and beyond to the sky.
