materiality and light

syr arts incubator ARC 108, Professor Kyle Miller

I took a strong interest in the precedent projects I studied in the previous exercises, particularly the use of screen in Neri & Hu’s Yingjia Club in Beijing. The facade is perforated metal; the perforations’ shape is derived from Loja and Eliel Saarinen’s Rug No.2. The scale of the perforations is indicative of a tripartite program wherein private studio and office space is marked by progressively smaller perforations. The ground floor, only protected by the screen with the largest perforations, is open gallery space. More private studio and office spaces are housed in a hanging void that the facade folds down and carries. In this way, the facade marks significant transitions between public and private space; one must reconfront the facade when entering a studio or office space.

abstracted self portrait ARC 181; Professor Valerie Rachel Herrera

The iridescence coating present on the black paper is from an optics lab investigating the phenomenon of interference. A thin layer of clear nail polish was placed on the black paper; its thinness causes lightwaves to combine with each other, creating the distinctive opaline coating. The pieces of paper were then cut and glued onto the pen and pencil line drawing.

Part of a series on designing and representing proto-architectures; particular attention was given to glass and materiality.

Visual analysis and superimposition of a precedent painting and image.

tectonics and stereotomics

20

primordial pavilion ARC 107; Professor Debbie Chen

Designed a pavilion dedicated to voting as well as a runway for Syracuse fashion students to show work. Stereotomic, box-like structures are reserved for private program such as voting and dressing rooms, planes highlight circulation and runway space, and space delineated by linear beams is reserved for public seating.

Employed tectonics and stereotomic methods to generate a hierarchy of space.

final illustration ARC182; Professor Joel Kerner

An illustration depicting a scene including figures, entourage, and atmosphere. The scene imagines a city inspired by ONF’s music, using color palettes derived directly from album covers.

topography ARC182; Professor Joel Kerner

Focused on generating artificial landscape within Rhinoceros, as well as representing atmospheric qualities using color and gradient. This illustration visualizes ONF’s album “My Name is” and its lead single “Beautiful Beautiful” by using color palettes derived from the album cover, as well as incorporating handwritten lyrics in the landscape.
