WELCOME TO JOHN LEGGOTT COLLEGE We often think about the people who came before us, who worked and studied here or visited in the past; about how we've evolved, building on the college that they knew, protecting the legacy but adapting and improving to meet the ambitions of learners and our community today. And we seek to reach out to those in our regional and global community who are only now starting to work with us and planning to study among us. For all those who are connected to us, this Annual Report offers an insight into what is current, vibrant and innovative about John Leggott College. We are a college that has transformed its success to be one of the highest performing in the country and which finds itself at the leading edge of post-16 education. But this has not been achieved without an uncompromising determination to provide new services, facilities, courses and opportunities that fit the needs of our broad population. We are John Leggott College and we define ourselves through a culture that is both supporting and enterprising. We work in partnership with many organisations and we recruit learners from many countries but common to everything we do is a desire to change lives, see people progress and ensure that we contribute to the future economy through the skills that our students develop. COLLEGE LEADERS Governance plays a varied and crucial role in contributing to the success of JLC. Over recent years governors have strived to develop positive relationships with students, staff, parents, employers and other members of its wider community. Governors are responsible for the strategic planning of the College and this is best achieved through working with key college stakeholders and partners. Governance arrangements have changed in recent years to ensure that there are regular opportunities for governors to meet with representatives of the groups they serve and this has contributed towards an improvement in outcomes (exam results and destinations) and a change in the curriculum offer. One of the ways in which governors gain a better understanding of the needs of stakeholders is through the use of “expert witness” sessions. At these events governors meet with representatives to gain an understanding of how successfully the development plan is being delivered and further actions required. Governors and senior managers are driven to lead the College to outstanding. This is a key driver in the action plan that they have agreed this year. A key strategic target for the college is to increase income from other activities and reduce our reliance on central government funding bodies.
INVESTMENT IN OUR CAMPUS Our priority: The Regeneration of the Campus The Education Funding Agency (EFA) has supported the College through the Building Condition Improvement Fund (BCIF) during the period 2011 - 2014. This funding is to improve the condition of buildings in the worst condition, and/or to increase the floor space of colleges with the least amount of space per student. The fund can only be used for this purpose. This funding assisted the College in creating a campus that re-established the JLC brand and supported the college’s reputation as a place of excellence in learning.
Our goals during 2011- 2014 have been to: Create a space that matches our expectations of learning. Improve the flow and coherence of the campus. To improve the condition of our learning environment and develop new learning spaces, linking architecture and design to the expectations of learning. Improve staff and students’ living and functional needs, including sports provision, catering, toilets, recreational facilities and car parking. Provide higher quality living spaces including eating/time out flexible spaces for staff and students Planning the need for future additional space.
INVESTMENT IN OUR CAMPUS Moving forward into 2014 - 2015 Using Building Condition Improvement Funding. Refurbishment of Maths and Modern Foreign Languages departments and Science laboratories to improve the learning experience for students. Replacement roofing works. Phased replacement window programme with energy saving double glazed units. IT infrastructure works including air conditioning units. A new All Weather Playing surface for the multi-use games area (MUGA). Refurbishment of the Hall and stage area to provide The Core Conference A full Library refurbishment and construction of a new link building between The Portal and the library and Refurbishment of the recently leased West Common Sports Hall including, replacement windows, doors & upgraded fire alarm and security systems. The final phase of our heating replacement programme for A Block, this work has helped reduce our energy costs.

STUDENT BURSARIES Most essential college costs are provided by the college free of charge, including access to computer facilities and specialist software. Students can use these in their lessons and in their independent study. However there may be costs that are required for which students may need financial support. Examples of these include field trips, travel costs and lunches. There are a number of schemes available within college to support these needs.

Student Trust Fund This funding is provided by bequests and donations to the college, to support external enrichment activities for students. Over the previous year this has included travel to other colleges for Rugby trials, water skiing tournament fees, gymnastics coaching course and athletics championship fees. In science it has supported students attending the International Young Physicist tournament. Art Foundation students have received assistance with materials and over in drama the fund supported a student participating in the Duck Egg Theatre production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In addition to this we have the Barbara Brown Award of ÂŁ1000, which is allocated to a Modern Foreign Language student, who progresses onto a HE course with a major focus on a language on an annual basis.
Travel Reimbursement Scheme The Travel Reimbursement Scheme (College funds) offers students assistance with travel costs that may prevent them from participating in college. This is open to residents outside North Lincolnshire as well as 19-year-old students.

THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE Over the past two years we have developed a campus to provide state-of-the-art independent learning spaces for students. We provide opportunities and an environment for students to succeed and achieve, to enquire into opportunities that will enhance their skills and experience. The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) comprises of an independent study area known as The ARC, an IT study zone (The Portal) and the Library. In addition we have embarked on a partnership with NLC Library to add availability of resources to our current LRC library, to broaden the scope available to both staff and students at no additional cost to the college. A positive impact on learners is central to everything we do. Other facilities offered to our students include upgrading of WiFi to use own devices, help guides via video clips, Microsoft Academy and a Print & Copy service.

MENTORING & INSIGHTS
The Insights programme in John Leggott College was implemented as a direct result of learner voice. Students requested a more personalised approach to mentoring and as a result Insights was launched. This programme offers a series of over 190 workshops, talks and events allowing students the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in a wide range of areas preparing students for life beyond JLC. As part of this programme we are committed to providing students with information on a range of subjects ranging from: • Higher Education and Further Training • Apprenticeships and Employment • Health and Well Being • Money Matters • Study Success • Being Street Smart Workshops are delivered by staff and external agencies ensuring that all College students at the end of their programme of study leave with a wide range of knowledge, skills and information allowing them to progress effectively onto positive destinations after John Leggott College.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We have welcomed students from various countries over the past academic year, including China, Hong Kong, Russia, Latvia, Germany and Spain. Success data published in 2014 highlighted that we are currently 3rd in the UK for advanced level success for International study.
All of our international students stay with local host families for the duration of their studies. This has a positive impact on our links with the local community and enhances the cultural experience JLC students have.
SUCCESS RATES The College's success rates on advanced courses now place it in an elite national group with success rates above 90%. As such, the College is the highest performing sixth form college across an area that includes Hull, Doncaster, Gainsborough and Selby. The recent Ofsted report recognised and praised the momentous achievements of the college and our students. It was a positive endorsement of changes we have made to benefit students. GCSE Maths is 65% A*- C. This is significantly higher than the national average for Maths & English, for those who didn’t attain at school.
Top 5% for visual and creative arts results in the UK. 100% of HE Access students were successful.
Our retention rates are above national average. 100% of Foundation Diploma Arts students progressed to further education / employment.
50% of our students are first generation HE students (compared to 20% nationally). 61% of courses perform above sector success rates. Valued added for BTEC level 3 courses is outstanding (ALPS 2014).
OFSTED 2014 was a landmark year when the College was inspected by Ofsted and awarded a judgement of Good. The College's management received praise for some innovative practice over the last 18 months and has been encouraged to continue working in the same way to become an outstanding sixth form college.
“Passratesforadvancedcoursesarenowabove highnationalaverages” Ofsted,2014 The 'good' Ofsted judgement was a cause for double-celebration for the College as it has also achieved a top 20 ranking in a national Education and Training NSRTs 2012/13 Institution report. Placing us 12th in the national ranking and first at a local level, for Level 3 success rate. Principal David Vasse was delighted that the staff and students were commended for their work to transform the outlook of the college and create the strong learning culture that inspectors' highlighted in their report.
“Verypositiveatmosphere&learningculture” Ofsted,2014 “Our focus has been on students and their learning: we're now national leaders in terms of student leadership, responding to students' views and creating a strong culture for learning. The inspection team spoke to a huge number of students, not just our student leaders, around the campus and were glowing with praise for how articulate they were and how ambitious they were. This inspection grade means that the College can now develop what it does and the community of North Lincolnshire can look forward to some interesting innovations in the coming months. The College's strong emphasis on innovative and creative approaches to teaching and learning, very effective mentoring, along with excellent promotion of students' leadership and participation in College life were also highlighted.
SCIENCE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP Following the positive Ofsted inspection we’ve been awarded status as a Science Learning Centre Hub for Yorkshire and Humberside and we've received further investment in the science facilities. This scheme provides Continuing Professional Development for staff across the country and allows JLC to train teachers & technicians in the Yorkshire & Humber region.
On the 5th January 2015 staff and external delegates completed further training. John Leggott College staff will be involved in subsequent continued professional development as part of the programme, which will allow the College to provide training to North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. This acknowledgement is further tesitmony to the successes of our science and mathematics teams who Ofsted highlighted delivered a 'new, enthusiastic and ambitious curriculum' and made note of the inclusion of collaborative learning, which led to an 'excellent and challenging learning experience'.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Every year the Colllege offers a huge variety of sporting opportunities and also encourages individuals with their external activities. 2013/14 saw a range of achievements as a result of this support, some of which are highlighted below. Football Development Centre: Won their ECFA Regional Category 2C League! Competed in the BCS/ECFA National Cup competition. Women’s Rugby: Kira Drabble qualified to represent Yorkshire & Humber at the BCS National Championships in Bath and came 2nd, winning a Silver medal! Kira also qualified to represent the North of England in U18 Women’s rugby.
Rugby Development Centre: Winners of BCS Yorkshire & Humber Division 1 Participation League.
Mixed Hockey: Winners of the BCS Yorkshire & Humber league! Reached ¼ Finals of the BCS National Mixed Hockey cup. Badminton: April Ng won the BCS Yorkshire & Humber Badminton singles competition and went on to compete at the National Championships in Bath.
Cameron Hassan & David Tierney won the BCS Yorkshire & Humber Badminton Men’s Doubles competition and also went on to compete at the National Championships in Bath.
GREEN TEAM
John Leggott College Students’ Union won an award for positive environmental action thanks to help from the JLC Green Team. The NUS Green Impact Bronze award reflects dedication to positive environment action over the last year turning the SU into a hub of sustainablity at the heart of our wider community. JLC Green Team were proud to be involved with the SU on various projects including: Applying to the Woodland Trust for over 420 free trees and planting them in a community event held at the Festive Fair open day. Making their own organic chutney. Highlighting the plight of banana farmers during Fair Trade Fortnight.
JLC - AN INVESTOR IN PEOPLE John Leggott College’s commitment to the development of the organisation and its people was recognised with the Award of Investors in People (IIP) bronze status. To achieve bronze status JLC not only had to demonstrate that the management has the right strategies for employee communication, development and engagement, but also provide evidence that all employees are fully engaged in the development of the college and themselves.
Human Resources and Organisational Development Director Donna Harris outlined what this means: “This is an outstanding achievement by each and every employee at our college. We feel proud that not only have we retained our Investors in People accreditation but also achieved bronze status”. Principal and Chief Executive David Vasse added: “What I love about John Leggott College is the enjoyment that our students derive here and it’s made possible by having a team that is professional, interested and keen to learn and develop. Our Investors in People accreditation at bronze level is a wonderful tribute to the determination of so many members of staff to help and support one another to believe in our college. Our performance is hitting new heights and that’s about staff and student success”.
PARTNERSHIP & COLLABORATION We are part of the North Lincolnshire Education Consortium. Earlier this year we hosted the North Lincolnshire Education Consortium training day. Through the NLEC schools and colleges work together to develop staff and best practice. In addition to this we also attend and host the 14 - 16 subject leader meetings. We work in collaboration with secondary schools and offer support with EAL and ESOL students in their own schools. We offer GCSE support in Creative Arts with students attending after school session for Art & Design, Photography and Dance. In the future JLC will be offering KS4 students the opportunity to study GCSEs on campus here at John Leggott College. These GCSEs will help with the schools’ Progress 8 measure. Our proposed curriculum offer will include Dance, Drama and Art & Design & Creator Club.
MOVING FORWARD The College is now reaching the final point in the delivery of its 2013-16 Development Plan. With progress towards goals on success, learning culture, technology and our professional staff body already very well reported, including by Ofsted, our key focus has been on developing relations, both internal and external. To this end, 2014 saw the start of a critical phase in the development of the College through a strategy of diversifying activities and expanding provision under the brand of John Leggott College: We have built upon our strong links with employers to start delivering Traineeships ("Step Up") and plans for Apprenticeship delivery are in train. We have established a new programme of professional courses for adults, which include AAT, Microsoft Academy and bespoke ESOL programmes for businesses. Our HND in Computing is in its second year. Our 16-18 year old students continue to access work placements in ever-increasing numbers. This connection to the world of work sits alongside our Insights guidance To this end, 2014 saw the start of a critical phase in the development of the College programme for students to which employers and local businesses contribute and which includes the nationally recognised Prepare for Work programme. We have initiated an exciting new sixth form partnership with Baysgarth School which will extend the brand of JLC into the community and will secure high quality uality sixth form provision in Barton-upon-Humber. We are currently planning a range of learning opportunities for 14-16 year olds in collaboration with North Lincolnshire schools, offering breadth in the GCSE curriculum in a cost effective way. This will help young people wishing to study creative and performing arts, for example. Our international recruitment strategy remains integral to our vision, with promotion planned for this year into emerging new markets in China as well as Russia, Vietnam, Colombia and Mexico. We are clear that the culture across our student body is stronger than ever and embodied in our highly evolved student leadership systems that give students an incredibly influential voice. Our vision, to be successful and progressive, starts with our students.
