LEVEL 3 A full Level 3 programme can consist of A Levels, Level 3 BTECs, or a combination of the two. The programme is tailored to suit each individual student and are best suited to those who have achieved at least five GCSEs at Grades A*-C. LEVEL 2 A full Level 2 programme can consist of Level 2 BTECs and/or GCSEs. We understand that some students may need an extra year of Level 2 before progressing onto Level 3, and we can offer a combination of GCSEs and Level 2 BTECs to suit everyone. Some students may need to re-sit GCSE Maths or English, alongside a Level 3 programme, and this is also an option for students who may only be missing 1 of these crucial qualifications. LEVEL 1/ENTRY LEVEL Foundation Learning courses are also available for students who are not yet ready for Level 2 study, but would like to gain a set of Entry Level qualifications while meeting new people and building their confidence.

EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT FOR ESSENTIAL WORK SKILLS

We want our students to have knowledge of what employers are looking for and for them to gain successful employment with top organisations in the future, so they are able to complete work with some of our biggest and most successful local employers while at JLC to stand out from the competition in the competitive job market. Below are just a few examples of things students can get involved in: WORK PLACEMENTS On some courses, work placements are compulsory during the teaching time; if this is not the case on individuals’ courses then they could still arrange a placement directly with the JLC work placement team.

GUEST LECTURES Representatives from local organisations come into college frequently to speak to students about their industry and employment opportunities within it. CV WORKSHOPS Students can find out the best way to sell themselves on paper and what they should include from people who are used to hiring members of staff. MOCK INTERVIEWS Practice makes perfect and students can take advantage of mock interview opportunities with local employers before they have to do it for real. BUSINESS MENTORS If students are interested in working within a specific industry and want some insight into how to progress to a career, JLC could pair them with a mentor from a local company - they will meet with students once a month and possibly also support site visits, suggest work placement opportunities or just provide advice by email.

EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT

The College is actively forming new partnerships between the region’s employers and young people and innovative programmes are being developed.

EMPLOYER LINKED COMMISSIONS, COMPETITIONS OR PROJECTS Students’ coursework could be based on a real-life situation or involve completing a project where the end product will be used by a local organisation.

JOHN LEGGOTT COLLEGE

THE STUDENT JOURNEY

We hold 3 enrolment days at the end of August, after students receive their GCSE results. Each student will receive an interview appointment, and will be asked to bring in their results. We then check that they have achieved all of the relevant grades to ensure that they are put on courses that are at the right level, and that will lead to the best chance of success for the student. MY SON/DAUGHTER IS AT COLLEGE John Leggott College experiences consistently high success rates. In 2014, our A Level pass rate was 98.1%, with nearly half of these grades at A* to B grades and a 100% pass rate on 71 courses.

When a student has applied for a place at John Leggott College, they will receive an acknowledgement of their application. We will then arrange an interview with the student to discuss the subjects that they have applied for, any career aims they have, and to ensure that their predicted GCSE grades will enable them to pursue what they have chosen. We will also be able to discuss any support needs that the student may have at this interview.

To help them do their best it is helpful if you can encourage:

We hold a Discovery Day in July, which enables students to experience a typical day

• Respect towards staff and other students

• 100% attendance, unless a valid reason for absence can be verified • Commitment to chosen courses • High motivation • Ability to study independently, but ask for help when necessary

MY SON/DAUGHTER IS PLANNING WHAT’S NEXT Last year: • 69.9% of our Level 3 Year 2 leavers have Higher Education destinations. This figure includes HE deferred entry students. • 25.7% of successful Higher Education applications have secured places at Russell Group universities. • Higher Education applicants have secured places at prestigious universities on competitve courses including Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, specialist Perfoming Arts Colleges and Oxbridge. • There were a total number of 276 successful Higher Education applicants with a pre-JLC enrolment average GCSE score on entry of 5.8 or below. • 18.33% of Level 3 leavers who secured a Higher Education place were in receipt of a bursary. • 14.55% of all leavers secured further education or apprenticeships. • 14.5% of leavers secured employment. Students from John Leggott College are accepted into the top performing universities in the country, as well as onto the most competitive courses. We regularly help students onto courses at Oxford, Cambridge, and other Russell group universities.

at John Leggott College, to try out some of their chosen subjects, and generally to ensure that they like the college and they are happy with the course choices. If they wish to change anything after this experience, there is an opportunity to do that at the end of the day.

JOHN LEGGOTT COLLEGE

MY SON/DAUGHTER IS CONSIDERING COLLEGE It is important to choose the right courses at college. We have put together six pathways to help students make their choices, based on their interests and career aspirations. Choosing subjects that fall within a pathway leads to a higher chance of success than randomly choosing 3 or 4 subjects which may not complement each other. However, if your subjects cross pathways but are related to a particular career we will not hold you back if you are capable of studying them successfully.
