MEASURING METHOD The measured drawings of my object (expandable folder) was by deconstructing the folder itself, revealing the folding techniques that makes the file holder expandable. Next, the file holder is flipped around where the fold patterns are located. These patterns are photographed and printed into scales of 1:2 (Plan and Section) and 1:5 (Elevation) Lastly, the pattern is traced onto tracing paper and

Analysis The folding pattern is just a simple pleat fold pattern. The pleat folds are what enables the folder to expand and retract. At a certain length, the cardboard is folded inside out to create perpendicular borders that forms a frame. Additional card is slotted in the valley folds of the pleat pattern to further extend the border between each fold.

MODELLING METHOD The modeling was done in a 1:1 scale to the file itself. Outlines of the folded pattern were created first through measuring the length of each fold and it’s midpoint. The polyline tool was used to create empty planes which would later become a surface through the surface from planar curves tool. The exact same fold pattern is copied and placed perpendicularly onto both sides of the original. A temporary surface was created to trim the fold patterns on the sides for the length to match the folder. Lastly, flat planes are placed in between the folds to create the file holders using the polyline and surface tool. BORDERS FOR THE FILE 6

My system object was reconfigured by making 8 pleat folds horinzontally and 7 pleat folds diagonally on a single sheet of paper. This model reconfigures my existing object by using a different fold method. The ‘X’ spots on the paper are then pushed upwards to create a pattern similar to the expandable folder but gaining more flexibility and a wider curve. This idea was meant to explore the idea of turning a flat plane into a volume which is my chosen profile.

Sketch Design #1 Gauntlet / Shield What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
Small metal components attached to one another forming a flexible gauntlet somewhat similar to a chainmail
How does this respond to your personal space? The gauntlet is worn on your arm that wraps tightly when passive. When threatened or defensive, the metal components will extend from the wrist towards the shoulder, covering the entire arm. Parts of the metal can also extend to become a shield at the hand area.

Sketch Design #2 Mask / Collar / Brace / What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
How does this respond to your personal space? This piece starts off as a collar piece that shades and covers the neck in all directions except the front. If the user is uncomfortable or feels threatened, the user may extend the collar piece into a mask. The extension can be stopped at any time before fully enclosing the head.

Sketch Design #3 Shell / Scales What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
How does this respond to your personal space? This designs incorporates a spikes on a persons back to act as a defense to the most vulnurable area of the body.
