Civic Work Summer 2014

Clarinda Correctional Facility Clarinda, IA 4 Weeks

ASK Studio was brought on board by the State of Iowa Department of Corrections to analyze and make suggestions for the re-design of the visitation sequence and kitchens of the Clarinda Correctional Facility. The allmale, medium security prison required larger food preparation, storage, and dining space for state employees and offenders. Located within close proximity to the Clarinda Mental Health Institute and Youth Academy, all food was being prepared and delivered to the correctional facility in the historic institute, est. 1884. ASK’s mission was to analyze and reduce the transition time for food in a secure fashion. Additionally, ASK’s analysis of the visitation sequence would allow more efficient, effective visitation for offenders as Clarinda has half of the state’s special needs population. This analysis and proposal is up for submission for the next Iowa Legislative Session.

Civic Work Summer 2014

Giovannetti Community Shelter Urbandale, IA 5 Weeks

ASK Studio had started the FEMA-rated shelter for the City of Urbandale before I added to the team as an Architectural Intern. I was assigned to design final signage options for approval by the city. After rendering, I took the final proposal to the client meeting was able to react to client feedback for the next iterations. I then walked the project through material selection and construction detailing into final construction.

I was assigned to analyze the site for existing city amenities and locate a site for a potential apartment complex around such city resources. After locating a future well, sanitary and water lines, and a natural gas line, the goal became to locate the potential building site and start on schematic design for the building mass and unit typologies.

Working on graphics is a familiar responsibility as I transition between the roles of student and an intern. Assignment to graphics was a successful way of introducing me to the firm’s methodologies and thinking before attempting built portions of a projects. ASK Studio received several of the awards for which I completed graphics. Historic Preservation Summer 2013

Graham Opera House Washington, Iowa 6 Weeks

Observation of the theatre with two of ASK’s project mangers provided a wealth of insight on how to approach observing and documenting a project protected on the National Historic Register through the State Historic Preservation Office. We visited several times to record dimensions in order for the interns to produce an accurate Revit model documenting existing conditions. ASK was then charged with producing drawings for a full facade rehabilitation.
