President’s Message

Teamwork gives JLSA reasons to cheer As President of this great organization I have many different roles. A President is a facilitator, integrator, motivator, communicator, manager, strategist, just to name a few. But this month, I am a cheerleader! I have never been a cheerleader before, so this is new to me. I have no Pom-Poms or megaphone, just great pride as three of our programs launch this month. LITERACY San Antonio, The Goodwill Partnership, and Olé Marketplace. All are perfect examples of our mission at work. These programs have also been collaborating with and supporting each other to serve our “One Mission” as “One League.” LITERACY San Antonio will host a media launch on October 15th. JLSA is the organizing force behind LITERACY San Antonio, however effective change requires participation from ALL members of the community — including corporate, agency and individual members. LITERACY San Antonio will provide a method for reliable and effective action. Through an Internet clearinghouse, hotlines, and various media along with community volunteers, we intend to enable existing literacy programs to serve more people in San Antonio, thereby significantly and permanently decreasing illiteracy rates. LITERACY San Antonio is collaborating with our Goodwill Partnership Team by sponsoring children’s book drives at all JLSA General Meetings. These donated books will be given to children who attend our JLSA/Goodwill Sale Day on February 28, 2009. After the retirement of “The Rummage Sale,” members expressed a strong interest in maintaining the community service aspect of the sale. The Goodwill Partnership allows members to continue to donate gently-used goods that will be sold at great prices to the those who need them. The Partnership includes $25,000 in “Community Cash Vouchers” presented by Goodwill for JLSA to distribute to community partner agencies. The Vouchers will be used on the JLSA/Goodwill Sale Day. The Goodwill Partnership Team is collaborating with the Olé Marketplace Committee to host a donation station at Olé Marketplace. Individuals who bring items for donation at Olé will receive a coupon for $2.00 off admission to Olé

Marketplace. These three programs are successful and support each other and are perfect examples of our mission at work! It takes a dedicated team to execute these major programs. Our Coaches and Team captains (chairs and committee members) need the entire team (JLSA membership) to work as “One League” to be successful. What can you do? As Syndi Phillips, Olé Assistant Co-Chair, said so well at the September General Meeting. “Come early, Be Loud, Stay Late and Wear Your Shopping Shoes!” • “Come Early”- Buy Olé tickets on-line now, donate your quota to Goodwill early and often, Bring books to the October General Meetings • “Be Loud”- Tell friends, neighbors, family, co-workers- to shop Olé, to visit literacysanantonio.com and view the video, donate to Goodwill, tear off the postagepaid comment card on the Goodwill receipt and write, “donated on behalf of JLSA” with approximate amount of donation • “Stay Late”- Buy an Olé multi-day ticket or event ticket, Continue to support LITERACY San Antonio and Goodwill all year! • “Wear Your Shopping Shoes”- Shop! Shop! Shop! Buy! Buy! Buy! At Olé Marketplace as Olé Marketplace funds support Literacy San Antonio and the projects and programs of The Junior League. And Shop, Shop, Shop, Buy! Buy! Buy! At the JLSA/Goodwill Partnership Sale Day to support our mission. Each program’s success depends on all JLSA members using “The Power of One” to promote each event. I will work on my cheerleading skills and look forward to working with all of you to cheer JLSA on to huge success! Remember: “Come Early, Be Loud, Stay Late and Wear Your Shopping Shoes!” Warm Regards,

Laura

Our league continues to have a positive presence with the community and agencies truly appreciate our efforts. “The volunteers went above and beyond, stepping in wherever they were needed and usually before we needed to ask and always made sure our constituents were taken care of and had a good time,” said Joan Childress, McNay Art Museum. Together, SA Works, the provisional class, and JLSA will continue to impact the San Antonio community, one “Done In A Day” project at a time.

Anniversary party to revisit the Roaring 20’s March 27, 2009 will be a night of celebration for The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. In 1924, eleven women founded our League. Therefore, back to 1924 we shall travel. Gals, grab your favorite Guy and head down to The Bright Shawl. Here you will find a reason to kick up your

heels. The Speakeasy Bar will be up and operational, but keep that to yourself as Prohibition is in high gear and no one wants the “buttons” (police) showing up to break up the fun. Brush up on the “Charleston” and “Lindy Hop” and be ready when the band plays a hit from the 1920’s. Not

up for dancing? Head to the Casino with your “Butter and Egg Man” (rich guy) to roll the dice or play a hand of twenty-one. Of course there will be a spread of food that is sure to please. Tickets will go on sale in January, but until then mark the calendar for Friday, March 27th from 7 to 11 p.m.!

OCT 2008 A Family Affair

Volunteer to bridge the generation gap This year the JLSA, Inc will debut its “Little Leaguers” Program. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for members to volunteer with their children ages 5 and over. Through these opportunities JLSA hopes to instill a life long love of volunteering in kids and also an understanding of what “Mommy” does at Junior League. To date three events are scheduled: two Christmas Performances with the Sunshine Singers and an Easter Basket Stuffing Project benefiting Saint PJ’s and the Children’s Shelter. “Little Leaguers” is also working on

Dear Placement Corner:

a:

In meetings and announcements, I keep hearing about how I need to check my profile, update my profile, etc. What exactly does that mean? Excellent question! Your member profile can contain as much information as you’d like – anything from employment information to your family’s names, education information to other league placements! Although you have the option to make some of your data viewable to the whole membership, only administrators have access to other portions. This data is invaluable to Placement, Nominating and Appointed Jobs committees when working to fulfill open placements within the JLSA. In short, think of your member profile as your online League resume – the more complete your profile is, the more likely it is that you’ll be matched with your perfect volunteer opportunity! To make changes to your member profile, go online to www.jlsa.org, log in, and click on the My Profile tab. Items to check on your profile: Contact information: Make sure your contact information is current – especially your email address, phone number and mailing address. All communication and correspondence is sent using this data! Picture: No doubt about it, our league is quite large!

Having a picture posted makes it so much easier to match names with faces! League photographers are available at all General Membership meetings to take your picture for your profile, and the Marketing Council will ensure that the photo gets uploaded correctly. Skills: It is very important that this section is complete when applying for an Elected or Appointed position within the League. Also, employment, education and other volunteer information sections are very useful when completed! Other League Placements: If you have transferred here from another league, chances are your old placement information didn’t come with you! You can update your profile in this section to reflect placements you have held in other leagues. Birthday: You don’t have to include your year of birth, but the AMIGOS committee always appreciates up-todate profiles to acknowledge member birthdays! Take a moment and fill out your profile – the League will thank you for it! -P.C. Have more questions about placement? Go online to www.jlsa.org and check out the Placement Tab. If you still can’t find the information you need, contact Billie Rose, Placement Chair at placement@jlsa.org for immediate assistance any time! Plus, if your question is featured in Placement Corner, you’ll receive a fabulous prize!
