S C R A W L S The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. JLSA/Goodwill Partnership
Ready to Rummage around? Last spring JLSA immediate Past President, Delaina Harrison, along with a small group of League leaders met with Goodwill to discuss ways to continue the Rummage tradition of giving back to the community. Since that time JLSA, Inc. President, Laura Talley, JLSA President-Elect, Anna-Melissa Cavazos, JLSA Managing Director Carolyn Kelley and Goodwill Partnership Chair, Betsy Dose have met monthly with a great team at Goodwill to create the partnership.. As discussions began, the goal was to utilize the strengths of both organizations. Using the quality goods from JLSA members together with the collection and distribution process Goodwill has in place, to create a “win-win” for both of the organizations and the community that we serve. Now that 2009 has arrived, the Goodwill partnership team is ready to share the next phase of the Rummage Sale. On February 28th, JLSA and Goodwill will kick off the next phase of the Rummage Sale. The sale will be held at 4 Goodwill Stores throughout the city. The quality items you have donated have been sorted and high quality items are being corralled and held at the distribution center. These items will be featured in these 4 stores on February 29th. As part of the partnership, Goodwill will provide JLSA with $20,000 in shopping vouchers that JLSA will give to clients of selected JLSA Community partners. These clients will use the vouchers to shop that day. In addition to the great
shopping opportunity our Rummage shoppers are accustomed to, the Goodwill partnership will provide us the opportunity to serve the population with additional services including financial education, preventive health screenings and job placement services if they are in need. The entire community will be invited and traditional Rummage shoppers will be invited for this great day. The Board of Directors and Executive Committee have been working with Rebecca Helterbrand, Vice President, Marketing and Performance at Goodwill, and Tony Diamond, Principal at Blueground Marketing, to develop the creatives and promotional campaign for the next phase of Rummage. Our exciting work together has produced a campaign to bridge from the traditional Rummage Sale to the new Rummage Sale. Following the Sale Day, JLSAdonations will be featured in a special boutique section of Goodwill stores. The boutique section will contain high quality items with name brands and famous designers, continuing the tradition of the “French Room.” All items will be tagged with the new boutique brand. At the December General Membership meeting the new brand was unveiled.

and discussion resulted in a brand – “Julia’s Attic.” As you will note, JLSA is part of the brand. The brand will also contain a tag line- “Items donated by The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc.” A mark and logo have been created as well. Below is a draft.
The JLSA Marketing Council is working to determine the logo color and assisting with the final logo and mark. The Partnership committee will be happy to hear your feedback, please email any comments to admin@jlsa.org. Please write “Rummage Brand Comments” in the subject line. Thanks for your support and plan to join us on February 28th.
JAN 2009 Annual Fund off to a quick start JLSA’s Board of Directors recently joined other members to contribute early gifts to the 2008-09 JLSA Annual Fund Campaign. As a result, the Campaign launched at the JLSA December 9th General Meeting with over $5,000 already received! Thank you to our early donors! Your gift to the Annual Fund provides operating support to The Junior League of San Antonio to meet our day-today expenses so we can continue to: maintain and operate The Bright Shawl and League headquarters office • promote voluntarism • develop the potential of women • improve San Antonio through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Every gift matters to the people JLSA volunteers serve, from children and adults in need of literacy services, to homeless teen mothers in need of mentoring, to the women who find community and purpose in our membership. Your gift has impact, and we are grateful to you. Thank you for making our work possible!
President’s Message
Junior League of San Antonio can’t wait for leadership There are many things that cannot wait, an ice cream cone on a July afternoon, a 2 year old child-for anything! and the future of The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. The League has made many exciting changes over the years and we have been able to change with the times because of the talented leaders that have lead the League over the last 85 years. Leadership is the most integral component of our mission. Without leaders we cannot train volunteers, develop the potential of women or improve the community. There are well-over 100 leadership positions within the League. The opportunities available to you include chairing one the community projects, leading the Ole’ decorations committee, leading the transfer committee, leading “The Scrawls” newsletter team and many more. There are leadership positions to meet whatever needs or objectives you may have. The League needs you and “Can’t wait for Leadership,” we need leaders now to accomplish the goals of the League and to accomplish our mission. It is time to start thinking about your 2009-2010 placement and I am asking you to consider choosing a leadership position for next year. The League provides training and support to make sure the experience will benefit you and the League.
My leadership experiences have provided training that I am able to use in different aspects of my life. The training I have received through JLSA has been invaluable. If you have any questions about leadership or a specific position, I encourage you to contact the person currently serving in the position. Also, feel free to e-mail placement@jlsa.org with any questions. The JLSA, Inc. Board of Directors is planning an informational session for members interested in serving on the JLSA, Inc. Board of Directors in the future. We will share the responsibilities of a Board member and answer questions about the positions. Watch your e-blasts and February Scrawls for information about this session. Please ensure the future of JLSA, Inc., by applying for a leadership position through the Appointed Jobs process. The League needs you now! The most common comment heard from members is, “I’ve only been in the League for 2 years, I am not ready to lead.” Remember the “best learning” occurs by “doing.” Join the leadership team and help JLSA continue to improve our community for years to come! Wishing You a Prosperous New Year,
Laura

Sunshine Singers brighten the lives of SA’s elderly
By Leslie Johnson Sunshine Singers Co-Chair The Sunshine Singers welcomed back 11 performers from last year and seven new performers. The singers started practice and performing in August and switched gears in December to singing Christmas Carols. The Little Leaguers joined in for a couple of caroling performances. The group will perform through February, completing an incredible 810 hours of community service! The mission of Sunshine Singers is to bring smiles to the faces of elderly residents of retirement communities and assisted living facilities in the San Antonio area. After each performance the singers visit with residents and listen to them reminisce about times past. The songs are from the 1930’s and 1940’s genre and the tunes provide good fodder for them to reflect on their days of dating, dancing, and being young and in love. Often, attendees can be seen singing and tapping their toes right along with the performers. Sunshine Singers provided a special performance for the Veterans at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital’s Extended Care Therapy Center, in honor of Veterans Day in November. The ECTC is home to approximately 40 Veterans, half of which are bedridden or in hospice care. Tiffany Mock sang a moving solo version of the National Anthem that brought tears to the eyes of many as we reflected on the Nora makes a new friend sacrifices these Veterans

made and our soldiers are still making today to secure our many freedoms. The Sunshine Singers continue to spread joy and sunshine around town. While the singers are not professionals, one Activities Director contacted the chair to ask, “How much do you charge to come and perform?” While it was a nice compliment, one of the things the committee likes best about this placement is that the audience is very forgiving. Just being there and taking time out of busy schedules to make them smile or visit means more than anything. So, if you are considering joining Sunshine Singers but thinking ‘I can’t sing’ or ‘I can’t dance’ don’t worry!!! All you need is a giving spirit and a love for the elderly. It is better to give than to receive. For it is through giving that you receive the most.

I’m a first-year Active member and I’d like to learn how I could further develop my leadership skills. I’ve heard about appointed positions, but what exactly are they? Could an appointed job be right for me? That’s a great question! It’s great to hear that you are interested in exploring your leadership opportunities within the League. An appointed job position is an excellent way to develop your leadership skills as it provides you with valuable training opportunities and excellent project management experience. Some examples of appointed positions include committee chair positions such as Prevent Blindness Committee Chair, Girls Inc. Committee CoChair, and Reach Out And Read Committee Chair (a new placement for next year!). Visit the Placement Showcase for more details! Almost all positions in Fund Development, Marketing, and Membership Development Councils are appointed as well. For a complete listing of available positions, as well as the appointed jobs application, please visit us online at www.jlsa.com under the
Placement Tab. You’ll benefit by acquiring or further developing skills such as public speaking, managing a group of volunteers, and time management - just to name a few! In keeping with our mission statement of developing the potential of women, we hope that you’ll take advantage of some of the leadership positions we have available to you. Please keep in mind the deadline to apply for Appointed Positions for the 2009-2010 year is January 15, 2009, so plan early! And if you have specific questions about a certain position, take advantage of our online membership directory and call or email the current committee chair member for her insight.
Have more questions about appointed jobs? Go online to www.jlsa.org and check out the Placement Tab. If you still can’t find the information you need, please contact Judy Crockett, Placement Chair Assistant at placement@jlsa.org. Plus, if your question is featured in Placement corner, you’ll receive a fabulous prize!

Spotlight on advocacy By Emily Jones LITERACY San Antonio team member Celina Montoya recently sat down with Ryan Sullivan, State Sen. Carlos Uresti’s former Director of Policy, to discuss efforts to support LSA. The LSA project has attracted supporters from many different disciplines, including Sen. Uresti and his staff, which are in positions to aggressively advocate for the project. Sullivan shared that a goal of Sen. Uresti’s is to make connections between projects the state is supporting and efforts in our local community. Additionally, Sen. Uresti and other LSA stakeholders in elective office provide a great deal of assistance in raising awareness of the literacy issues we face in San Antonio. When these leaders speak with their constituents, they ensure that individuals hear a consistent message about the problems of illiteracy in our community and the solutions under development as part of Literacy San Antonio. They are helping to spread the LSA vision of “100% literacy through 100% community participation.” One of Sen. Uresti’s goals in the upcoming Legislative Session is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the literacy-related work currently being conducted by state agencies and to add literacysupporting elements in areas where they may be lacking. He and his staff are developing an overall state-wide policy that encourages literacy as its fundamental goal. They are conveying the message that illiteracy is a pervasive and fundamental problem, but that it is fixable. For more information about how you can support advocacy efforts of LSA, please visit www.literacysa.org and click on “Advocacy.” The website shares tips on various methods of communicating with elected officials and also provides a form letter that can be used to write your representative. Thank you for your support of these efforts. A city that reads, succeeds!
