Do you remember what it was like as a child getting ready for a new school year? I remember the new clothes, or, in my case, uniforms with brand new white blouses that I’d get a few weeks before the first day. I loved going school supply shopping and couldn’t wait until we received the list. My dad would take us shopping and pretty much we’d get whatever we wanted that was cute and fit the school requirements. I remember picking out the pencil box that would last me all year and that would store all of the supplies I would need to get me through until May. I remember going back to school to see familiar faces who would ask, “what did you do this summer?” Well, this summer my vacation included a first-time trip to Las Vegas, a trip to the beach, and a trip to San Francisco. While these summer excursions provided some fun and needed relaxation, I also spent some time preparing my “pencil box” for this new League year. Your Board of Directors met throughout the summer to continue working on our strategic plans for the 2009-10 year. We are embarking on a branding initiative with a local firm, Blueground, who has been working with us in identifying who we are as the JLSA, Inc., of the 21st century while preserving our 85-year history. We anticipate that these efforts will assist in recruiting more members who are committed to our mission and want to be a part of the positive change we all want to make in our community. You, the member, are the most important part of what allows us to achieve our mission. The value you receive and give as a member is a high priority. Retention is a key focus. We want to place a greater emphasis on communication – both internally and externally – regarding what it means to be a JLSA, Inc., member. My “pencil box” has become full of ways to communicate with you, our valued members. When I say member, I mean all of our members whether you are a new member, active, or sustainer. Beginning in September, I am looking forward to the “President’s Chat,” an occasion that will allow a small group of members each month to give feedback on topics that affect all members. I hope you will join me. My “pencil box” has become full of those crayons, stickers and glitter to make our meetings fun and keep you engaged in our mission. These will also provide the tools that support appreciative leadership thinking throughout all of our placements. We all want to feel appreciated for our efforts, just as those we serve have often thanked us after a completed project has changed their lives. Lastly, my “pencil box” has a few bookmarks for those great books on leadership to read and to pass on to others. One of the best ways to mentor another league member is to get them involved in what you are doing. Thank you to Karen Greenwood who asked me to be a part of the Board of Directors when she was President. Remember to take those opportunities to say “yes” when called - you never know where you might end up. I look forward to seeing you at our first general meeting on September 8 at 7 p.m. Join us before the meeting starts for a welcome back social at 6 p.m. so you can tell everyone what you did this summer and what you are bringing in your “pencil box” to build a better community and develop your potential this year. Authentically yours,

Anna-Melissa Cavazos JLSA, Inc., President, 2009-10

editor’s note By Paige Bitter

Can you believe the 2009-2010 JLSA, Inc., year has begun? If there is one thing to be sure of, it is that the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., is continually evolving, improving and growing. With that in mind, your Scrawls newsletter is also changing. It is now published bi-monthly, and soon you may choose to have it delivered electronically. The Scrawls is going green! What will you find in our new and improved Scrawls? Learn how members truly touched children’s lives and made reading “fun” at Reading Camp – a great example of our signature project at work. Of course, also included is an update on our Literacy Project, as well as updates on our other League initiatives such as Met Opera, Nominating Committee, and AMIGOS. Did you know that SA Works has been hard at work since May? Have you seen a photograph of the new Holiday Olé Ornament? Find that and more in this issue. We would also like to have more of your input into Scrawls. Have a good recipe you want to share? How about a great holiday decorating tip? Send them to paigebitter@sbcglobal.net, and we’ll make sure to share your tips with our membership.

JLSA, Inc., volunteers packed up and went on a reading safari at Hawthorne Academy! We explored Habitats of the World for two fun-filled weeks. Children and volunteers enjoyed exploring animal

habitats from around the world using different methods of reading and writing skills. We had so much fun that we forgot we were LEARNING! No exploring adventure would be complete without singing! Every morning prior to the camp, volunteers led the students in camp songs about the animals or habitats we would study that day. Then the students participated in science experiments and literacy-based projects using the information we learned about the rainforest, desert, arctic, forests, ocean and many other habitats. At the literacy stations, each student was given the chance to practice his/her oral reading skills, comprehension skills, decoding skills and vocabulary knowledge. At the closing of each 4

adventurous day, the JLSA, Inc., volunteers took time to recognize each student’s accomplishments with an award. There were so many examples of eager learners! One of the students said she couldn’t wait to come to camp because “my brother told me how much fun he had!” Campers from the past asked, “Can we come back, you made reading fun!” One child wrote thank you notes to each one of us and then said,“Can you give this one to the boss so she knows how much I like the camp?” Our adventure would not be as successful or exciting without the hard work and enthusiasm of the League volunteers that made Reading Camp 2009 a fantastic success. The volunteers have given these

students a curious mind and a love of learning. The dedication they have shown will give them confidence to excel in reading and writing in the years to come. Well done!

SA Works kicked off its 2009-2010 year in May with 188 volunteer hours and over a thousand individuals served. Together, new members and actives assisted Texas Organ Share in a Donor Family Quilt Ceremony at the Bright Shawl, and they also partnered with the San Antonio River Foundation to kick off the grand opening of the Museum Reach of the River North project along the San Antonio Riverwalk. This was an extraordinary beginning for SA Works. Hats off to our volunteers for such a great start to the 09-10 year! SA Works continued its strong support in the community by volunteering for a variety of agencies this summer. From babysitting at Seton Home, to helping the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society prepare for the Light the Night Walk, to assisting Healy Murphy in a water play-day for children at their child development center, our volunteers have proven the JLSA, Inc., commitment to assisting those in need in the San Antonio area. SA Works is comprised of 38 active volunteers this year. We partner with over a 130 new members and the new Placement Sampler volunteers to fulfill the many hours of service requests from agencies all over the San Antonio area. Without this partnership we would not be able to make the huge impact we have on the community. These volunteers serve by fulfilling Done-in-a-Day (DIAD) requests submitted to our League office. The DIAD requests are comprised of projects that usually can be completed in eight hours or less, although some do require our assistance over a longer period of time. Even though these are shortterm projects, our help allows these agencies to make a long-term impact in many individual lives. SA Works will continue to make its positive impact throughout the fall, winter and spring. By partnering with the new members and Placement Sampler volunteers, we are making lasting improvements in our community – one project at a time.

For the past 62 years we have had a rich history with Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children. In 1947, the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., gave $15,000 in seed money to help start Sunshine Cottage. Over the years our League has completed countless Done-in-a-Day Projects, such as painting figures of children holding hands on the walls of the gym, helping with the annual Sunshine Cottage Cowboy Breakfast, and planting flowers and plants around the campus. In addition to giving our time, we also established a Sunshine Cottage scholarship fund in 1955. The fund exists in perpetuity, and a percentage of the fund is presented in scholarships each June. This year we presented two scholarships to two deserving students: Kilee and Elijah. With this scholarship presentation, our total in awards given reached $102,235. We have also made a $30,000 commitment in support of the Reading Nook in the new Sunshine Cottage campus library. It was such an honor to present these two children with a gift that will shape their future and provide them an opportunity to listen, talk, and become a part of the hearing world. We are proud of our continued partnership with Sunshine Cottage.

JLSA, Inc., and Met Opera to Give Aspiring Opera Singers the Chance of a Lifetime By Heather Russo, Met Opera Committee

Join us for a weekend of inspiring stories, heart-stopping drama, and genuine Texas hospitality — and that’s just what is going on behind the scenes of this annual singing competition! The JLSA, Inc., will once again help stage the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition, Southwest Region, September 26 and 27 at Saint Mary's Hall. Treat yourself to an afternoon of musical musings at “The Finals” on Sunday, September 27, at 2 pm at Saint Mary’s Hall. Not only will you hear a wonderful concert, but it is free and open to the public. Invite your friends and family to help us celebrate the 51st anniversary of these auditions and Mag Tobin’s legacy! The JLSA, Inc., is the only Junior League involved in this national cultural event, so please consider volunteering as we help aspiring opera singers pursue their dream of singing on the stage of the Met in New York City. Met Opera shifts are eligible for JLSA, Inc., member credit. Please see the "Member Credit Sign-Up" tab of the JLSA, Inc., website to choose days and times that are convenient for you. An information reception will be held on

September 10 for those interested in volunteering or learning more about The Metropolitan Opera committee.

signature project LITERACY San Antonio Heats Up in Summer 2009! It was a busy summer for the LITERACY San Antonio team! In spite of the summer heat, LITERACY San Antonio implemented two groundbreaking projects. First, the ReadSA Summer Reading Academy was launched.

This pilot program sought to increase literacy levels at Windcrest Elementary through community engagement and collaboration. In partnership with Rackspace® Hosting, (NYSE: RAX), The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., H-E-B, Valero, and North East ISD, we created a six-week Summer Reading Academy at Windcrest Elementary. The Summer Reading Academy was one of a number of initiatives included in the Read SA pilot plan developed by Windcrest Elementary, Rackspace and The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. The Summer Reading Academy included a daily curriculum to significantly and permanently increase the literacy levels of more than 70 students (kindergarten through fifth-grade) at Windcrest Elementary. Students worked on vocabulary as well as their reading skills through

individual and group work.Teachers worked independently with students to increase each student’s reading level and frequency. In addition, students studied a math, social studies and science curriculum. Meals were provided through contributions from North East ISD and the SA Food Bank. Measurements of student performance during the academy are ongoing and include pre-Academy and post-Academy tests, attendance rates, informal assessments (at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year), and results from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).The ReadSA pilot project provided a model that can be used by other schools and communities to increase literacy for underserved families.

Second, LITERACY San Antonio completed the first release of the Community Literacy Plan.

holders across San Antonio to combat illiteracy through a common vision and plan. The Literacy Powerline and The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., brought together over 50 local agencies during a seven-month period to address the literacy issue in San Antonio and to create a comprehensive, unified plan for the entire city. The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., has been instrumental in opening the lines of communication among agencies and in creating an avenue that fosters communication and collaboration as the coalition moves forward. September is National Literacy Month, and we are celebrating the success of the ReadSA Summer Reading Academy and the completion of the Community Literacy Plan while preparing to implement the plan and build the coalition. membership Meet our New Managing Director – Denise Reams White Tell us about one of your favorite JLSA memories?

We had a fundraiser with the author of a hot new coffee table book, “The Art of Giving.” It was about gifts given by famous people to famous people. Big and glossy, with great gossipy stories and pictures. The author was very handsome and debonair. We dressed in fabulous cocktail clothes and pretended we were very chic, indeed! It was the best party JLSA ever had, and I was thrilled to chair it. Just like one out of Real Housewives…..

What were your placements in the JLSA?

I was co-chair of the Community Calendar, Assistant Marketing Chair, Flavors Chair, Fund Development Chair, Planning Council Chair, Strategic Plan Chair, Bylaws Chair, Community Coalition Chair, ChildWatch Chair, and Area V Director to AJLI.

How long have you been a sustainer?

I went sustaining after 17 years as an active in 1999 when Molly Wilkes was President.

Tell us about your family.

Not enough room in your article! My husband, Brooks, is the real JLSA volunteer…he volunteered at the Rummage Sale warehouse before we met to “meet chicks.” He works in the sign business, and we have been married for 22 years. I have two sons. Colin is a junior at American University in Washington D.C., and works on Capitol Hill, and Dylan, who just graduated from Alamo Heights, is headed to Fordham University in New

membership Transfer Spotlight:Tammy Cochran Married to Chris Cochran; Sons Coleman (6) and Carter (3) We moved from Plano,TX, to San Antonio a little over a year ago when my husband accepted a position at Rackspace. I grew up in Austin and my husband and I met when we were attending Texas A&M University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and former elementary school counselor. I am currently staying at home chasing after my spunky, active boys. I enjoy reading, exercising, decorating, and traveling. I will be serving on the Howard Early Childhood School PTO board as membership chair this upcoming school year as we tackle our first kindergarten experience. I am also supporting my friend who is starting a new MOPS program at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church this fall. We have enjoyed San Antonio and found it to be a very family friendly and welcoming community. I am looking forward to being a part of JLSA in order to learn more about the city and do my part to make it a better place. I have always found Junior League a great place to meet interesting and dynamic people. I can't wait to get started!

York City. I will be an empty nester—a very poor empty nester with plenty of time for JLSA but no cash for GNO!

What book are you currently reading?

I always have a stack next to the chair in my bedroom. I am reading “Hot House Flower” and the “Nine Plants of Desire” right now. I just finished “Julie and Julia.” I read lighter stuff in summer.

What is your favorite food?

I love Mexican food – the real stuff. Anything with poblano peppers and lots of Oaxacan cheese!

What is your favorite movie?

Modern movie would be “Love Actually” and an old classic would be “Some Like it Hot” with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe.

What is your favorite trip to take in the summer?

I am a fall/winter trip taker, we never really travel in the summer. My favorite vacation destination is Hawaii….best trip ever was 20th Anniversary to Paris for Valentine’s Day. But, I am going to the Hamptons in August…

Who is your favorite sports team? Hands down, University of Texas Longhorns!

Where else have you lived other than San Antonio?

I grew up in South Texas, went to UT in Austin, and moved here from college and never left! My family and I did live in New Orleans for two years when I was in junior high, and I really picked up a Cajun accent for a little while!

Nominations or self-applications can be submitted through the www.jlsa.org website (under the Forms tab and then click on Applications) and are due by September 13, 2009. Sustainer Report As the 2009-2010 league year begins, we look forward to a fun and active year for the sustainers! Here are a few exciting items to share:

• On the heels of our successful New Active Group, we are starting a New Sustainer Group, which will include members who sustained from 20042009. Led by two recent sustaining members, Carolyn Karger and Laura Moreno, this group will provide opportunities for newly sustaining members to connect and continue to support the JLSA, Inc. • JLSA, Inc., sustaining members possess a wealth of knowledge and experience that we hope can be shared with our actives and new members. This year the Sustainer Liaison will work with the sustainer committee to not only plan sustainer social events but also to offer opportunities for sustainers to join other JLSA, Inc., members at a Done-ina-Day project, a fun and informative member training, a Little Leaguers event, or one of the special events throughout the year.

You’ll begin to notice spurts of fresh air gently sweeping across the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., this year, particularly when it comes to marketing and communications. The first wisp of air had us changing the name of the council from the Marketing Council to the Communications Council. Our new name encompasses our distinct responsibility to effectively communicate with our members and our community, using appropriate avenues to reach each of our important audiences. Other waves of air are rolling through, bringing subtle changes and developments for the benefit of our League.

I’ve highlighted a few of them below enjoy the breeze:

• The Scrawls newsletter. Now published bi-monthly. You’ll now receive five robust issues, with a refreshed look and layout. Members may opt-out of receiving print copies and receive the newsletter electronically.

• The JLSA, Inc., Brand. What comes to your mind when you think about the League? What do you value most from your membership? Our organization has such a rich history and is slowly evolving. As we move forward, we will be refreshing our look and our positioning statement in the community to appropriately reflect where the League stands today and our goals for future success. We have partnered with Blueground, a full service branding agency, to guide us through this important phase. • Social Media. JLSA, Inc., is now on Facebook and Twitter!

We can’t be left behind on this social media craze. Please join us online by following us on twitter (@JuniorLeagueSA) and becoming a fan of the League on Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/junior-league-of-san-antonio/119304685827?ref-s). We also have a private group page on Facebook strictly for members to collaborate and interact. We encourage participation in this group and hope that you will also join our fan page and share it with your friends and family! Fans will receive updates, facts about the League, and special invitations and offers. See you online!

• Public Relations. We are upping our PR initiative this year through a strategic partnership with a PR agency. Keep your eyes and ears abreast of JLSA happenings being dispersed around town. You never know what you might see or hear – there are plenty of surprises on the horizon.

• SA Woman Partnership. A great partnership is in bloom as SA Woman Magazine has agreed to feature Holiday Olé in their September / October issue! We’ll have 16 pages to feature Holiday Olé and highlight the JLSA, Inc. We are pleased about this partnership and the opportunity to reach out to other women in our community.

As the chair of this wonderful council, I look forward to the many developments and opportunities that are on the horizon. I am thankful to have such talented women serve on the council this year, and I am excited about the connections we will form and the progressions we will make.
