New Year Commitments for a Fantastic League Experience Can you believe that 2010 is just around the corner? Wasn’t it just the millennium year, and we were all worried about our computers? And as my nephew has told me once or twice: “You mean you were born in the last century!?” As a new year approaches and I reflect on this JLSA year and my almost ten years of league service, I have advice – or, rather New Year’s challenges - for each of you as you begin to decide how you will serve next year and in years to come. • Say “yes” when asked to serve in a leadership position - the return usually well outweighs the time you spent, and the experience and skills you learn can take you anywhere. • Take the time to sign up for a community placement or visit a community partner during our March meetings even if you don’t need the credit - the impact we have on so many people is amazing! • Ask a board member to tell you about her league history and experience and what path you might take to gain leadership experience. I value the time, talent and friendship of these women. • Take some time for yourself doing something just for you - maybe that is why you are a part of JLSA! Many friendships and collaborations have been formed by being a part of this unique organization. • Continue to strive to be the authentic and extraordinary woman that you can be - we value You just as you are! • Live, love, have fun, eat big, shop much, and smile! Thank you for your league service and commitment to building a better community. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday! Authentically yours,

Whew! It has been a busy few months for all of us, and now the holidays are upon us! Holiday Olé Marketplace was an outstanding success, as evidenced by comments from members and merchants alike. One of the merchants remarked to me that the Olé Preview Party was the best she had ever seen, and she travels to many similar events. Kudos to the Holiday Olé Marketplace committee for planning such a wonderful event! Our signature project, Literacy San Antonio, also reached a milestone by officially becoming its own independent entity. Be sure to look for advertisements on VIA buses and Clear Channel billboards promoting this wonderful venture. We have also included updates in this issue on the New Member Project, Annual Fund Campaign, Little Leaguers, and an overview on our Community projects, along with much more. Thank you for all that you do to make the JLSA such a success. Happy Holidays!

community Community Update By Lesley Vernor, Community Council Chair Life in the “Community World” has been very busy, and JLSA volunteers have only just begun. As of October 1, our volunteers have helped to serve over 41,000 people in the community, logging over 3,600 hours in service.

3600 hours and counting While SA Works and Reading Camp kicked off their work in the summer months, our other projects used the summer to plan for their upcoming year. Girls Inc. and their “Growing Together” program began when each of the area schools started classes in the fall. The program expanded this year to include more area schools with more participants. JLSA volunteers have truly helped expand the program to ensure another successful collaboration with Girls Inc. Seton Home volunteers continue to help mentor and tutor the young women of the home once a week. Relationships are strengthening between the JLSA volunteers and the young women, and the attitudes each week have been positive and aspiring. Southwest Mental Health Care has graciously allowed us to work with their staff and children for the past five years. The program consists of volunteers organizing activities around a story and allowing the children to actively participate in the theme of the evening. Each activity proves to be both fun and educational for the children as well as the JLSA volunteers. Our Sunshine Singers have been performing at area nursing homes since the first of September. Because of our talented volunteers, we have entertained over 180 seniors this year. The chairs invite you to come see their performances and their impact on the residents.

Prevent Blindness is a program that trains JLSA volunteers to be certified vision screeners. Volunteers have already screened over 800 children in area schools and have made recommendations for further testing when needed. Reach out and Read (ROR) is a new placement for JLSA this year. ROR is a national organization that supports reading programs in physicians’ waiting rooms. JLSA volunteers read to patients that are waiting to see the physician for a well-check. The placement has been a success in San Antonio, and we hope to see it grow in years to come. Placement Sampler, a new placement choice, allows members to experience the best of both worlds: a chance to work with a specific project for half the placement year as well as volunteer in the community through SA Works during the other half of the year. The concept has been well liked and has given our volunteers the chance to be more involved with a team as well as the community. Met Opera was another great success this year and the team of chairs and volunteers were exceptional. Well done!

Looking Ahead Looking ahead towards the spring, our community events and projects include our Leading to Reading program, the Goodwill Sale on February 27, and a week-long focus on Kids in the Kitchen. The chairs and committees are already working very hard to make our spring projects a success. On behalf of the Community Council and the Board of Directors, we are so proud of our community projects, and we sincerely want to thank all of our JLSA volunteers as well as the project chairs.

signature project Introducing... Literacy San Antonio (LSA) By Kimberly Archer, Literacy San Antonio Marketing and PR Lead

San Antonio’s key leaders held a special event on October 26 to introduce Literacy San Antonio (LSA), share their vision for what the literacy collaborative will do for our citizens, and ask community leaders to help provide further support and funding as LSA establishes operations as an independent entity. District 1 Councilwoman Mary Alice Cisneros invited the community to join Literacy San Antonio for “a night to remember” fundraising event with special guests Mayor Julián Castro, Jesse Trevino (a local and nationally renowned painter/muralist), and a live acoustic performance by Jesse Garza’s “Acoustic Dreams” Latin Jazz Ensemble. Wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres were served compliments of Classified Wine & Spirits and Anne Marie’s Catering. Overall, it was an inspiring show of support for Literacy San Antonio and its role in mobilizing efforts to combat the city’s literary rate. Councilwoman Cisneros has always focused on education and was pleased to be a recognized guest at this event. “It is time for us to address this crisis in our city. We have a mayor who understands the gravity of this issue, and the city leaders are becoming aware of how serious this can impact our community economically as well as affect our quality of life,” said Cisneros.

Literacy San Antonio Chair, Pamela Toman, said the support of the city is immeasurable. "We are grateful for the attention the Mayor and City Council has brought to the issue of literacy, and we hope to continue working with service providers and industry leaders to increase literacy levels. Statistics do indicate that as literacy levels increase the levels of crime, domestic abuse, teenage pregnancy and other issues decrease. We can't afford not to focus on literacy.” JLSA President Anna-Melissa Cavazos as well as the JLSA Board were recognized for their leadership in initiating the project, providing volunteer support and funding, and working to sustain LSA by establishing it as a standalone entity. Without the JLSA’s vision and support, this project would not be where it is today – in a position to unite the community around our most significant challenge for the future. 100% literacy requires 100% community involvement.

City officials invited other local leaders to show their support as Literacy San Antonio branches off to form its own non-profit agency.

Community Open House The Community Council hosted an Open House on October 8 at the Bright Shawl for our community partners. The information session highlighted our upcoming events, Done-in-a-Day (DIAD) process, grant deadlines, and future placement opportunities. Over 20 community partners were represented at the session, and the potential for new partnerships was encouraging. Thanks to the JLSA staff and members of the Community Council for making this open house a success.

Literacy San Antonio Launches Awareness Campaign with VIA and Clear Channel By Kimberly Archer, Literacy San Antonio Marketing and PR Lead Currently, 25 percent of San Antonio residents are considered to be functionally illiterate. Many of the under-served youth are quickly adding to that number. Literacy San Antonio is committed to significantly and permanently raising literacy levels in the Greater San Antonio area by empowering all residents to become literate and active community members. To raise awareness, a fresh new advertising campaign began in November. A creative team - led by Lionel and Kathy Sosa, John Andrade, and Ernest Bromley - developed the messages that were posted on VIA buses and Clear Channel billboards throughout the city. The initial ads were powerful in their simplicity, showing beautiful, hopeful images of children stating, “Yes he/she can. If they can read. Literacy San Antonio.” During the six-month run of this ad campaign, the storyline will evolve to depict the improvements in these children’s lives as their literacy levels increase. Look for

these promises of hope that will help our community understand San Antonio’s current literacy challenge and what must be done to change it.

We all know that the Junior League of San Antonio has a proud history of service to San Antonio. We provide countless hours of volunteer work, financial donations to groups in need, and work hard to develop the potential of women. None of this would be possible without passionate fundraising efforts that increase the power of our organization. The reality is - it takes money to solve problems. Holiday Olé Marketplace is JLSA’s only event-based fundraiser, and just like its predecessors, it is impossible to underestimate its importance when it comes to the League’s success. The generous support Holiday Olé received from our wonderful sponsors, League members and the San Antonio community was nothing short of amazing. And so was the event itself! The Preview Party was a fantastic way to kick off Olé. Heavy rain and flooding streets did not stop over 500 guests from coming out to enjoy our unique merchants, great food (including tastes from Coco Chocolate Lounge and Papoulis, drinks from Silver Eagle/Budco, Barefoot Wines, GLI, Samuel Adams and Azul Wine Margaritas), live music from the Texas Tides (presented by Depression Treatment Clinic - Gary L. Penny MD), the Lost Husbands Lounge, and Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry Holiday Wish bags. Attendees also took home great party photographs from Studio Benton. The Preview Party confirmed that Holiday Olé Marketplace is not only San Antonio’s premier shopping extravaganza, but also a great place to have fun with family and friends. This party literally had people coming back for more. Many guests returned to enjoy exclusive private shopping, mimosas and conti-

nental breakfast at Ready, Set, Shop! presented by Frost Bank. Shoppers enjoyed the exclusive merchant discounts provided by the Capital Group Holiday Gold boxes. The stage was set for exciting Marketplace shopping. Liquid Assets Custom Pools and Landscape beautifully presented the holiday garden theme, and Café Olé, presented by Clear Channel, offered sumptuous treats from Bright Shawl catering. Glassware artist Lolita was available to sign her beautiful creations during general shopping hours on Thursday, thanks to our merchant friends at In-Courage. Later that same day, Holiday Happy Hour was a huge hit. Shoppers enjoyed complementary Azul Wine Margaritas while visiting the Massage Heights of Leon Springs massage station and checking out the hottest fall lipstick colors from Amar Cosmetics. With so many special opportunities available, it’s no surprise Holiday Olé Marketplace guests had a fabulous time. Guests weren’t the only ones raving about the event. Our merchants were thrilled with the turnout, the special events, and friendly Olé committee and League members. Their positive feedback was truly amazing, though not surprising. San Antonio is the ideal place to be when it comes to fantastic hospitality

and having fun, and our League is the epitome of that. Having fun was a staple at Holiday Olé Marketplace, but it is also important to remember how vital this event is to the community partners with whom we work. Holiday Olé Marketplace enables our League to positively impact various public issues in our community and to ultimately build a stronger and better San Antonio. Each and every League member played a role in supporting Holiday Olé and its wonderful success. In addition, our extraordinary donors and sponsors are heroes and champions of the League. Without their generosity, we would be nowhere. Please take a moment to recognize those that helped make our event so successful, and please be sure to thank them when you frequent their business. Holiday Olé Marketplace is proud to provide a source of funding to further the League’s mission, and enable all of us to Be Authentic: Be Extraordinary.

As we enter the holiday season, the women of the Junior League of San Antonio have worked hard all year to make a difference in our community. In the month of September alone, we spent more than 1,500 hours volunteering our time and talents in placements such as Prevent Blindness, SA Works, Seton Home, Girls, Inc., and Southwest Mental Health Center. These projects are making a difference in our community, but they need your financial support to continue. By now you should have received our Annual Fund Campaign letter, which explains why the Annual Fund is so important to the future of the Junior League of San Antonio. Because dues alone cannot sustain our community efforts, we strongly ask you to consider a gift to the Annual Fund this holiday season. Every donation will make a difference – no matter how large or small. In honor of our 85th anniversary, we have created a special “anniversary level” of giving. Anyone donating at least $85 will receive a commemorative lapel pin. For active members, the pin will be placed on your General Meeting nametag. For sustainers, the lapel pin will be mailed to you, and we ask that you wear it during future Junior League events. On behalf of the Annual Fund committee, thank you for your consideration of this important cause. Your continued support will help ensure the Junior League of San Antonio is continuing to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors for a long time to come. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today! To donate, visit www.jlsa.org and click on “Make A Donation.”

FACT 1: Did you know that more than 78% of every dollar donated to the JLSA Annual Fund goes directly into the community? This is significantly higher than the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance nonprofit industry standard of 65% spending on program activities.

FACT 2: This holiday season is not only about giving; it is also about being thankful. Please join us in thanking the following individuals, who have already pledged or contributed to this year’s Annual Fund campaign in September and October:

New Member Project a Success!

Making Volunteering a Family Affair

By Shannon Boyle Jenn, SA Works New Member Chair

By Lisa Ayres Now in its second year, the goal of the JLSA Little Leaguers is to offer JLSA members the opportunity to share their membership experience with their family, form friendships with other mothers, and to install in the Little Leaguers a lifetime love of community service. Little Leaguer events currently planned include holiday caroling with the Sunshine Singers, helping sort and wrap gifts at the Family Service Association, working in the garden at the San Antonio Food Bank, and making Easter baskets for St. PJs.

On a foggy November Saturday morning, ninety-eight New Members, mentors, board members and the SA Works committee met at the Unicorn Center, a center for mentally disabled adults. Because the center is immensely busy during the week, a wide variety of jobs awaited our volunteers. Mr. John Schwab, Executive Director of the Unicorn Center, organized all of the jobs perfectly, so that everyone knew what to do and what was expected of them. One of the jobs entailed painting eye-catching unicorn murals on several walls at the center. Other jobs included painting handrails and cabinets, cleaning up the riverbed, organizing and redecorating the life skills room, making decorations for one of the center’s many celebrations, and waxing and cleaning the vans that are used to transport the members of the Unicorn Center. The new members all worked hard in accomplishing their tasks, and Mr. Schwab and the Unicorn Center staff continue to send thanks for a job well done. A big thank you to all the women who came out to volunteer. You set a great example for others to follow!

AMIGOS Chairs:

I moved to San Antonio in February because my boyfriend was newly stationed at Lackland AFB. We have been together for almost three years but have only been in the same place for less than 11 months of our entire relationship! I first joined the Junior League of the Emerald Coast (Fort Walton Beach, FL). I remember at my first provisional meet-n-greet, I met a great group of young, professional women who not only enjoyed being active in the community, but also knew how to relax and have a good time. I knew then that I was in the right place! One of the actives in JLEC had previously transferred in from San Antonio, and she had nothing but great things to say about JLSA. I couldn't wait to become a member once I got here. I work at UTSA, and in my second life, I am a Reservist in the US Air Force. I am excited about the many opportunities I will have to work with great women and to serve the San Antonio community through the JLSA!

Sustainer Report By Mitra Woody, Sustainer Liaison • November 14 marked the First Annual Sustainer Community Project. This year we partnered with Dress for Success of San Antonio to redecorate their dressing rooms. With several sustainers lending a hand, we transformed these rooms into a warm welcoming place for the clients of Dress for Success. Sustainers also donated handbags and shoes that were interview appropriate. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success, and we look forward to future sustainer community projects. • On December 3, sustainers celebrated the holidays with a

riverboat tour featuring all of the Riverwalk’s beautiful lights! A grand time was had by all, with wonderful conversation, hot chocolate and Christmas music. This was a brilliant way to kick-off a December filled with merriment and holiday events. • Calling all Sustainer Transfers! Being a member of S.T.U.F.F. (Sustaining Transfers United For Fun) is a wonderful opportunity to meet women from a variety of places, backgrounds, and leagues. Started over 20 years ago by a group of sustainer transfers who wanted to learn more about their new city and meet new people, S.T.U.F.F. has proven to be an invaluable resource for information and contacts. Think of a new member year without training or placement obligations, and you've got S.T.U.F.F.! S.T.U.F.F. members captured the holiday spirit over cocktails and dinner at Club Girard on December 8. On January 12, come tour the Pearl Brewery and lunch at Texas Farm to Table. And don’t miss our annual Valentine Luncheon at The Argyle Club on February 8.
