Celebrating Women Building Better Communities While visiting a Hallmark store a couple of years ago, I read this quote on a plaque: “Low-rise jeans are so impractical when you are flying by the seat of your pants!” I can think of other reasons why they are impractical, but that made me laugh. Do you ever feel like that sometimes? We are all so busy doing the many things we feel we must do every day to live, get by, or to just be happy that we often forget to just stop and smell those hot, homebaked chocolate chip cookies we don’t have time to make! I know that this year of League service has found me flying by the seat of my pants, many times just trying to keep up with the many wonderful things we are doing in the League. As I go from meeting to meeting, I have begun to step back (now with just a few months left in my placement) to reflect on the opportunities to celebrate thus far. I celebrate you, our members, who make the organization a powerful group of women building better communities and connecting others to make an impact in our community. Every job in the League, big or small, DOES make a difference. I have so enjoyed getting to know many of you this year, whether working on a project, getting your emails, stopping by a placement, or at a President’s Chat. The JLSA members are the best by far! I am so excited that we can share with you the work that has been done as we launch our new brand and logo. Thank you for trusting your Board and Communications Council as we worked to celebrate a new brand that allows us to cherish our past and brings a new generation of League members into the 21st century and beyond. And speaking of beyond, I am thrilled that we will be welcoming another new class of 150+ members at our annual reception on March 25. This is the future of our League! Our retention rate for the 2009-2010 class of women is stronger than we have had in years – over 100+! Thank you mentors and new member team! I am proud that the work of our Literacy San Antonio committee over the past four years has now allowed this signature project to actually spin off as its own nonprofit organization! Thank you Pamela Toman and the team for making this happen. The JLSA will be proud of this endeavor for years to come. We should all celebrate our second year of the Goodwill partnership. We are helping to further the Goodwill mission of “changing lives through the power of work” because of our donations – big and small. Our efforts result in partner agencies receiving $20,000 in gift cards to buy much-needed items. I hope to see you all at one of the six Goodwill locations hosting the sale on February 27. Authentically yours,

Introducing Suzanne Goudge – JLSA Volunteer Extraordinaire By Paige Bitter, Scrawls Editor When asked why she joined the Junior League of San Antonio in 1978, Suzanne Goudge laughingly replies, “Because my mother told me to.” And that self-effacing answer is truly indicative of the sense of humor, modesty, and confidence of Suzanne Goudge, the JLSA 2010 Volunteer Extraordinaire. The Volunteer Extraordinaire Award is given each year to a JLSA sustaining member who exemplifies the true spirit of voluntarism. She is a visionary who served others throughout her League career and who continues to dedicate her time serving the community. Growing up in San Antonio, Suzanne watched her parents give of themselves to the community. “My parents, especially, my mom, were great volunteers. My mom enjoyed being the ‘indian’ instead of the ‘chief.’ She never asked for accolades, she just enjoyed giving of her time and talent.” Returning to San Antonio in 1976 with an accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Suzanne began her career at Broadway Bank. Two years later, she joined the JLSA. Her first placement was with the Sunshine Singers, which she later chaired. She went on to chair the Nominating Committee and Community Council, and she also served on the Volunteer Extraordinaire Committee. Perhaps, though, one of her most memorable – albeit time-consuming - placements was co-chairing the Building Committee. “One of the hardest jobs I had at the League was co-chairing the expansion of the Bright Shawl,” Suzanne says. “I remember spending so much time down there that my youngest – who was then about three- or four-years-old - ended up having full reign of the place, entertaining herself when I was meeting with the contractors.” All of her varied League experience has proven to be invaluable time and time again. “I loved my time in the League,” she says. “I credit it for many of the skills I use in business and volunteer work.” Suzanne’s professional career has continued at Broadway Bank, and she currently serves on its Board of Directors as well as on numerous other committees within the Bank. She and her husband, Jimmy, also have four children: daughter Sara Brouillard (married to Jeff), daughter Carrie Dyer (married to Nick), son Cy Goudge, and daughter Kate Goudge. As a busy mom and a professional, community service was not just an after-thought - it was a must. “I enjoy giving,” Suzanne explains. “I enjoy accomplishing, and most of my volunteer work enables me to do just that – accomplish something.” Her service within the community has included the United Way, the American Heart Association, the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWT), the San Antonio Zoo, Retired Senior Services, Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children, St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, the Alamo Heights ISD, the Alamo Heights School Foundation, and KLRN. Her work within each organization not only spans years of time but also includes various leadership positions. Asked how she managed to serve in so many capacities while still working and raising a family, Suzanne says with a laugh: “Perhaps I have a little attention deficit disorder. I like being busy.” However, she also explains that early on she realized the significance of involving herself in organizations that were also important to her children, such as the Girl Scouts and the Alamo Heights ISD. She served as PTO president at Howard Early Childhood Center,
4
JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SAN ANTONIO
Woodridge Elementary and the Alamo Heights Junior School, and she was also a Girl Scouts Troop Leader from 1980 until 2008 (while also working within the GSSWT on various committees and task forces). She has served on the Alamo Heights School Foundation Board since 1998 as well as on the Alamo Heights ISD Strategic Planning Committee. She is currently vice-president of the Alamo Heights ISD Board of Trustees. Suzanne’s League involvement has also been somewhat of a family affair. Her mother, Sarah “Sally” Cheever, joined the JLSA in 1960 and was awarded the Volunteer Extraordinaire Award in 1998. Her sister, Cece Cheever, is also a JLSA sustainer, and another sister, Jean, is a sustainer with the Junior League of New York City. Most recently, her daughter, Sara Brouillard, is a JLSA new member. Sara has countless memories of her mother’s Junior League work. “One of the most vivid memories I have is going to Olé Marketplace and playing while my mom fixed things up for the event,” she says. “I also can't tell you how many times I was dragged down to the rummage sale to drop things off. When I was older, I would get in my car to go hang out with friends and find a note saying, ‘Please deliver the items I put in the back of your car to the JL Rummage Sale.’ Talk about a drag for a teenager!” she says with a laugh. As to what advice Suzanne may have for new members and actives alike, she says, “Enjoy your time in the League, and get to know all of the people you volunteer with. You will form a special bond that will carry on for years to come. Learn from the structure of the League – they are a group of women who get things done, a talent you can continue on in your home, workplace, or at other non-profits in the future. “I have loved all of the friends I have met through my League work, people I would not have gotten to know otherwise. It is a great group to work with. Be proud that you are a part of it – I am.” Congratulations to Suzanne Goudge, our 2010 Volunteer Extraordinaire! Please join us at the Bright Shawl on March 30 at 11:30 a.m. for a luncheon celebrating her great voluntarism and accomplishments.

Community Spotlight: Prevent Blindness and Sunshine Singers By Lesley Vernor, Community Council Chair “Prevent Blindness” is a program that performs vision screening in area schools. This year alone, over 1,609 children were screened and received referrals to vision specialists when needed. These children may not have been screened otherwise. With the outstanding coordination from the chair, Amy McLin, JLSA volunteers ensured once again that this placement was a huge success. Our volunteers are now certified in vision screening for five years. Completed in December, Prevent Blindness was also part of the Placement Sampler this year and continues to be part of the Community Plan for 2010-2011. Thank you, ladies, for all of your dedication to this program. Sunshine Singers have danced and sung their way into the hearts of over 840 residents in area nursing homes this year. Sunshine Singers has always been a popular placement in JLSA, and if you saw their performance at the February general meeting, then you know why. Thank-you notes from the nursing homes have flooded in thanking the singers for a job well done and an appreciation for their time and dedication to this inspiring placement. Thanks to the chairs Lauren Gordon and Leslie Johnson for their coordination and to all of the singers for making this commitment each week. Prevent Blindness and the Sunshine Singers, as well as all of our other
JLSA community projects, will be showcased at the Placement Showcase on February 22 at the Bright Shawl at 6:30 p.m. All members are welcome to come hear more about our fabulous community placements for the upcoming year.
Kids in the Kitchen By Lesley Vernor, Community Council Chair The Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) committee is cooking up some great events for this year’s push towards health and nutrition in the community. March is National Nutrition Month, and things will kick off with nutrition awareness at different locations around the city. Numerous events are also planned April 5-10 to raise awareness in our community regarding nutrition and a healthy lifestyle choices. The annual Kids in the Kitchen showcase will be held April 10 at the Bright Shawl. Jaime Barrera (ladybugbarrera@yahoo.com) and Laura Lopez (lauralopez@hotmail.com) are leading this venture and welcome any volunteers who want to be part of KITK this year and in the future. For more information on the program, email Jaime or Laura or go to http://kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org.
Goodwill honors JLSA with Partnership Award The JLSA was recognized with a 2009 Partnership Award at the Goodwill Annual Meeting on January 29. This partnership began in 2009 with the first Goodwill Rummage Sale and introduction of a special store within a store, Julia’s Attic. Each of the Goodwill locations in the San Antonio area now has a Julia’s Attic. Get ready to shop on February 27 during the Goodwill Rummage Sale at the six area Goodwill locations! LSA Harnesses Innovations in Technology to Increase Literacy in San Antonio
2009 Year in Review for Literacy San Antonio By Kimberly Archer, Literacy San Antonio Marketing and PR Lead With the JLSA sustaining its development, Literacy San Antonio (LSA) completed a tremendous year of progress! Everyone involved in this project (who donated books, worked at literacy events, dedicated time in building the community plan or got the clearinghouse launched) should feel proud of LSA’s accomplishments. The progress over the past three years came together when LSA established operations as an independent entity or 501C3. Take a look at some of our milestones:
Highlights of 2009 • Pulled the community together around a common set of recommendations • Created an organization with the specific mission of increasing literacy and education attainment in San Antonio. • Developed an online community clearinghouse. • Placed beautiful and hopeful ads on VIA buses and (coming soon) to Clear Channel billboards. • Gained the respect of the Mayor, City Council, P16+ Council and many other elected and private leaders who have committed support and resources in taking LSA to the next level in the coming year. LSA will now evolve into an innovative and collaborative agency, including the establishment of a Board of Directors as well as committees focused on Strategic Planning, Funding Development and hiring staff – all efforts that will manage the sustainable operations and promote our mission of increasing literacy and education attainment in San Antonio over the next two decades. There may still be much work ahead of us in moving the needle on San Antonio’s literacy rates, but please take a moment to be proud of what the Junior League of San Antonio and Literacy San Antonio are doing to make our city a better place.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SAN ANTONIO
After more than a year of development, Literacy San Antonio (LSA) is proud to announce the early release of San Antonio's Online Community Clearinghouse. This clearinghouse will be the “glue” that brings together all available literacy partners and resources to those individuals who most need them. The clearinghouse is a public portal that connects a local service provider with a community member in need of literacy support or with those individuals interested in providing literacy support. The system will highlight the following: PROGRAMS: All agencies in San Antonio will profile programs by Birth, Early Childhood, Grades K-12, After-School Programs, Out-of-School Youth, Adult, and Seniors. SUCCESS STORIES: The website will showcase real stories about challenges overcome and highlight the great programs that are making a difference in people’s lives. The stories will feature programs that are changing outcomes. EVENTS: We will populate the calendar with information about literacy fairs/fiestas, book drives, and so on. Expect to see a full calendar of literacy and education events every month! NEWS: Includes news about how LSA and partners are improving literacy and education attainment in our community. DONOR/VOLUNTEER SUPPORT: A button will encourage individual donors to make an immediate donation or offer volunteer support. The clearinghouse was developed in partnership with community agencies and truly leverages the power of technology that is unique in addressing social issues. This innovative tool will bring services to individuals in our community like never before. When you log on to www.literacysanantonio.com in midFebruary, you will gain the new experience of the LSA Community Clearinghouse!

Literacy Fiesta Celebrates Reading in San Antonio Hundreds of families participated in the Literacy Fiesta event on February 13 that was organized by over 20 agencies and schools. This kind of community collaboration and participation will drive improvements in our literacy levels over time. Congratulations to Literacy San Antonio on another wonderful event! Story time at Literacy Fiesta
We have redesigned the LSA logo to provide a bold visual that stands on its own and is also graphically consistent with a larger literacy movement and ad campaign that is launching across Texas. Look for it as part of our ad campaign posted on VIA Buses and Clear Channel billboards.

Transfer Spotlight: Sarah Gatewood I moved to San Antonio this past spring when I married my husband, Jason. He has been in San Antonio for the past two years working at Southwest Research Institute, while I worked in state government in Florida. When we married in May 2009, I moved to San Antonio to be with him. As for work, I am part of the Communications office at San Antonio Water System. I joined the Junior League of Tallahassee in 2007 as a way to meet young, professional women while also giving back to the community. When I moved to San Antonio, I looked forward to JLSA as a way to become a part of San Antonio, volunteering with other women to make a difference. I also enjoy reading, movies and meeting new people. I’m always up for having a glass of wine or dinner with friends – just give me a call!

New Logo for JLSA! By Kate Stevenson, Brand Manager Wow… what a great honor it has been to help craft our Brand Identity for 2010 and beyond. It started with a lot of research, quite a few meetings, hundreds of emails and too many discussions to keep track of! We have definitely spent many hours on this endeavor, and have had so much fun throughout the process. At our recent General Meeting we officially unveiled our new logo – hope you did not miss it! Look for our April/May issue of Scrawls that will be updated to reflect our new Brand Identity – the logo, the colors and the style. Our new logo is inspired by the dedicated women of our League, by the beautiful city of San Antonio and the meaningful community work we all do - it truly captures the finest aspects of our League! Thanks to all the hard work and dedication of the team who made this possible, and to the Bradford Lawton Agency who brought it all to fruition. There is still much work to be done to implement our Brand Identity throughout the League and the Community, so stay tuned!

The JLSA Gets a New Look! By Melissa Unsell, Communications Council Chair I hope you noticed a significant difference in this issue of the Scrawls! This new look is the new face of the Junior League of San Antonio. This change will move us forward into the new decade and help us build an even stronger brand equity with our members and the people we touch in the community. Let me help you embrace this new change by enlightening you on the following: • Our new identity now symbolizes our mission and purpose • Our new identity allows us to be a more competitive force in the nonprofit sector • Our brand campaign contains elements that will make the JLSA memorable to the community • Our new identity allows us to recruit more effectively and increase our membership. These are just a few of the possibilities that this image has in store for us. I hope that with time you will connect with our new identity and find that it reminds you of the value in being a JLSA member. When you look at our logo, you should feel connected with fellow members and the San Antonio community. You should see that our combined efforts help sustain the San Antonio community. You should see each part of our mission resonate within our logo. We truly are "women building better communities."
