president’s view

Thank you Wow, as I sit here to write this last article, I am dumbfounded that the League year has gone by so fast. Truly, it went by in the blink of an eye! This year of service to the League has been one of my best and most memorable for so many reasons.

This year we continued to serve our community through many wonderful community projects and partnerships with a variety of agencies. The Unicorn Center new member project last November was amazing! Over 100 women made a huge difference in the lives of those the Unicorn Center serves through the work done inside and outside the center. I will always remember the lesson I had in the art of making flowers out of tissue paper! Literacy San Antonio (LSA) has launched this spring into its own non-profit agency, complete with an office and staff. This signature project, which began about five years ago, has been supported and nurtured by our membership and the LSA committee team. Thank you for being the leaders in literacy awareness in our community. Our new branding initiative is taking JLSA well into the 21st century and beyond. A sustainer shared with me that a picture is worth a thousand words, and our new brand with women working together to build up and bridge together our community says just that and more. I look forward to the wonderful branded items we will all be sporting next year! Thank you to all members for providing valuable survey feedback. Improvements to the JLSA property, both the Nesbit House (JLSA office), and the Bright Shawl, are still works in progress. However, painting of the outside of the Nesbit, new audio equipment in the Bright Shawl, and the plans that are underway for parking lot improvements with curb appeal, are accomplishments that propel us forward in maintaining our valuable asset. The opportunity I enjoyed the most this year was the chance to work with and meet so many of our members. There are many of you and one of me, but through President’s Chats and attending events and meetings, I had the chance to meet many of you and listen to your feedback. Thank you members for your smiles, your hard work, and your commitment to the mission of the JLSA. To the Board of Directors that I was so privileged to serve with this year, thank you for making this placement one of my best, by filling it with laughs, joy, smiles, fun challenges, cupcakes, hard work, many lunches and dinners, and more. To Cathy and the incoming Board of Directors, take the time to really take it all in, do what you can with what you have, and enjoy this opportunity. It does go by quickly! I hope to see you all at our May 11 general meeting where we will celebrate our accomplishments and prepare for a new year, our 86th. Thank you for allowing me to “be authentic” and for being able to serve an extraordinary group of women. Authentically yours,

Anna-Melissa Cavazos JLSA, Inc., President, 2009-10

president’s view I have been staring at a blank screen for days, wondering what to write in my first Scrawls article…. praying to get it done. (Thanks, Paige, for your patience as I put you off for days.) In writing this first article, I find it very difficult to put down in words all the thoughts and emotions I have as I begin serving as your President. Our plans in the upcoming year are many: • • • •

Communicate our new brand and logo to the San Antonio community. Continue educating the community on the “what” and “why” behind JLSA. Make additional renovations to the The Bright Shawl property (including the completion of our new parking lot). Create new Community partnerships and revisit our Community Placements to ensure that they fulfill both our mission and our members. • Develop a new fundraiser to replace the Rummage Sale that we retired in 2008. We are also welcoming one of the largest New Member classes in our history. These members are the future leaders of Junior League, and I look forward to meeting them and having them learn more about the League. When my sister sponsored me into Junior League in the spring of 2002, I joined for two reasons (probably some of the same reasons you did). First, I wanted to volunteer in the community, but I did not know where to go or for whom I wanted to volunteer. Secondly, I wanted to meet new people. Over the past eight years, I have gotten much more out of my League experience than I could have ever imagined, and I have volunteered for some incredible agencies. Every year we work with over 60 agencies, and our work makes a huge difference in the lives of their clients. Although I may not have seen the actual transformation in their lives, hearing the success stories from the agencies gives me the inner satisfaction that I was seeking. I have met some of the most incredible people in the League, people that I might not have ever met otherwise, and some of who are now my best friends. But most of all, I have received some incredible training. I have learned how to create a budget, how to run a meeting, communicate more effectively, how to fundraise, and so many other skills that I will use for the rest of my life. I encourage each of you this year to expand your horizons, learn something new, try a new placement, and experience something you would never have tried before. Who knows what doors it will open for you and what opportunities it will unlock. Much Love,

Cathy Scanlon JLSA President, 2010-11

6,000 Hours and 80,000 Served By Lesley Vernor, Community Council Chair As this placement year draws to a close, JLSA volunteers will have volunteered over 6,000 hours and impacted more than 80,000 people in our community. Our members volunteered in multiple capacities, including SA Works’ “Done in a Day” projects that serve over 50 agencies. Through our permanent placements such as Girls Inc., Seton Home, Prevent Blindness, Southwest Mental Health, Met Opera, Kids in the Kitchen, Goodwill, Summer Reading Camp, Reach out and Read,

Leading to Reading, Sunshine Singers, and our ongoing collaboration with Literacy San Antonio, we are proud to be “Women Working to Build Better Communities”. That work will continue next year as we begin a new project at the Family Endeavors Fairweather Lodge, where we will be teaching life skills to residents. I am so honored to have been a part of this great team of women making such a great impact in San Antonio. Thanks to my team and the entire Community Council of volunteers for making this year so memorable and making a true difference in San Antonio.

Kids in the Kitchen Showcase Good food, good fun and good times were had by all of the participants in the annual Kids in the Kitchen showcase, held April 10 at the Bright Shawl. Over 100 children prepared yummy snacks with Chef Michael Flores and Whole Foods, while Trilogy Dance Studio taught new fitness games and dances. Participants also learned fun facts (such as how seeds grow into strawberries) before leaving with goody bags full of healthy treasures.

Goodwill Partnership Event a Success! On February 27, a special “Rummage Sale” was held at six Goodwill locations. These locations had over 5,000 shoppers total and 1,000 services were provided to customers. These services included health screenings, book handouts, tax preparation information, library card sign-up, prescription program information, and more. Now in its second year, this “Rummage Sale” results from a JLSA partnership with Goodwill of San Antonio. JLSA members donate gently used and fine goods to local Goodwill donation stations throughout the year. Our members donated items that valued over $47,000 in this year alone! Julia’s Attic, Goodwill’s in-store boutique featuring items of higher quality (reminiscent of the JLSA Rummage Sale “French Room”) grew this year to include all locations in San Antonio. This in-store boutique was inspired by the JLSA. Thank you to the Goodwill committee team and all of the volunteers who helped support this annual partnership.

Congratulations to the Seton Home Volunteers! The Junior League of San Antonio was named Volunteer Organization of the Year by Seton Home at their annual gala on April 10. The JLSA was recognized for its commitment to Seton Home through our yearlong placement, chaired by Mary Helen Acosta and Reagan Neumann. The JLSA also provides Seton Home with “Done in a Day” volunteers and has regularly awarded Seton Home residents with Goodwill gift cards.

LITERACY San Antonio has a new look and feel and now a new home! By Kimberly Archer, Literacy San Antonio Marketing and PR Lead Around San Antonio you may have noticed new LITERACY San Antonio (LSA) public service announcements (PSAs) posted on digital billboards and city buses, compliments of Clear Channel and VIA. These PSAs portray a message of hope and direct viewers to the new community clearinghouse at www.literacysanantonio.com. Not only will you find LSA on billboards throughout the community, but you can also find us in a new home! We are proud to call The Weston Centre our new base of operations. (Thank you to Graham Weston for his continued support and generosity.) And to support our operations, LSA has hired its first employee: Celina Montoya. Celina comes to us from the LSA team within the Junior League. Prior to her work with LSA, Celina was a reporter for Texas Public Radio. We are excited she is now dedicated her time to LSA full-time! Book Club Hosts First Author Brunch By Christie Fryatt, Book Club

On February 13, the Junior League Book Club hosted its first author brunch with Leila Meacham, author of the New York Times bestseller Roses. Roses is the story of three families whose lives intertwined over three generations in the East Texas cotton, lumber, and mercantile businesses. Often compared to other classic books such as Gone With the Wind and The Thorn Birds, Roses continues to be highly acclaimed in publishing circles. There are contracts to publish the book in several different languages as well as plans for a movie. Roses is an engrossing read that will keep the reader turning pages and wishing for more when it is finished. Roses author Leila Meacham is a retired San Antonio English teacher who even taught some of our League members! During the

brunch, she shared her story of the creation and writing of Roses, explaining how she almost did not complete the book and, then, how she took a very unlikely path toward finding a publisher. She also shared her joy in the whirlwind success of Roses and answered questions from the audience. Following her speech, she signed books. Over 150 people attended this event at the Bright Shawl (which was the first San Antonio event for Roses), including members of the public as well as League members. Many League members also used this opportunity to introduce friends and family to JLSA. The JLSA Book Club hopes to host more author events in the future to promote our literacy signature project. (If you know local authors that would be interested in partnering with JLSA in such an event, please contact Book Club chair Christie Fryatt at christiefryatt@gmail.com.)

Volunteer Extraordinaire Luncheon Suzanne Goudge, Volunteer Extraordinaire for 2010, was honored March 30 at a luncheon celebrating her commitment to service. The Volunteer Extraordinaire Award is given each year to a JLSA sustaining member who exemplifies the true spirit of voluntarism. She is a visionary who served others throughout her League career and who continues to dedicate her time serving the community. The following is an excerpt from Suzanne’s speech at the luncheon: “The Junior League has meant so much to me. It was my first nonprofit. I joined as soon as I was eligible with a little push from my mom. She was so afraid I was just going to work for the bank, so as soon as I was eligible she was helping fill out the application. Let’s just say Moms are always right! The Junior League has always done wonderful things, but what has impressed me the most has been their ability to change focus with the times. We could still be running a restaurant here and providing an all-city Rummage Sale, but we found others who could do it better, handed it off to them, and refocused on other projects that had more meaning for the community. Although the projects and the service to the community are fantastic, the JLSA does something even better---they develop and train first class volunteers and create wonderful life long friends.

Volunteer Extraordinaire Suzanne Goudge and Family

If you belong to an organization and you get a volunteer trained by JLSA, you know you are getting someone who really knows what they are doing and can probably take your organization to the next level. They know how to run an efficient meeting (even know Roberts Rules of Order), they understand strategic planning, and they know how to start a project and how to end it or hand it off, something so many organizations are not capable of doing. They are truly a non-profit boot camp, and I do mean boot camp, because there are a lot of times you just don’t want to do it, but they make you, and you are a better volunteer and person because of it. The other part of the equation, which cannot be overlooked, is the lifelong friendships you make. You meet women you did not grow up with, did not go to school with, not even your same age, and it causes you to stretch your circle of friends. I can’t say enough about friends; you need as many as you can be blessed with. Work hard to keep them and know there are a lot of potential friends in the Junior League of San Antonio, and they will be your friends forever.” Congratulations to Suzanne Goudge!

JLSA President a Chair-ty Celebrity! Our very own JLSA President, Anna-Melissa Cavazos, was asked to represent the JLSA in the Ronald McDonald House first ever “Chairty” event. This event challenged local “celebrities” to use their creativity in decorating a chair that was auctioned off on April 10. Anna-Melissa’s chair was inspired by the women of the JLSA who work so hard and deserve a “girls’ night out” in their “little black dresses.” We all know the right “little black dress” can make a day better! The JLSA continues to support Ronald McDonald House families with volunteers through “Done in a Day” projects.

New Active Spotlight: Dana Cleveland Husband's name: Paul Cleveland Children's names: Audrey, Allyson, and Avery Hometown: La Vernia Occupation: First and foremost, I am CEO of the Cleveland household and protector of my three precious angels as well as partner to my husband. I also currently own a Shell Station in La Vernia with my husband, and I am a Senior Assessment Specialist for Mathematics for both domestic and foreign math curriculum including standardized testing and online publication of math material. Why you joined JLSA: I joined JLSA because I was bored. Ha... not really. I mainly chose to join JLSA because I wanted to give more and take less from my community. Ever since I moved to the San Antonio area, I have been looking for ways to better myself professionally and educationally, and I decided what better way to do both of these things than to do something good for others all the while learning about my community and its richness. Favorite moment this year: My favorite moment this year as a new member was being able to help in the community in ways I have not been able to since having children. Giving has always been such a huge part of my life, and I love being able to step out of my own comfort zone and experience new ways of helping others. It

touched me most when I was thanked by a seven-year-old girl for simply coming to "play with her and her friends"... it was then I realized I was not doing "time" to meet my volunteer requirements, but I was actually getting something out of all of this myself. She saw my volunteer time as me simply coming out to spend time with her and her friends. Plain and simple. I was hooked from that moment on. Placement next year and goal for that placement: I think our future as women leaders of our community lies with girls between the ages of 8-15. I have decided to place with Girls Inc. even though I didn't have the opportunity to work with them in my new member year. Again, stepping out of my comfort zone. Since I have three girls of my own, it is a passion for me to touch the lives of young ladies and not only encourage them to become leaders themselves, but also to become educated and empowered in their lives. Advice to incoming new members: My advice to incoming new members is this... now, read my words carefully... ENJOY IT! Don't look at the requirements as a burden or obligation. Look at them as opportunities. See them for what they are, which is exactly why you want to become a member, you want to help people and become a part of something bigger than yourself. Step out of your comfort zone. Realize that this is fun. I have met amazing people within the organizations we help. I have met inspiring people rising above their own situations and society’s expectation, and I have met an incredible group of women who find love and pride in their hearts to help others and ask for nothing in return.

Sustainer Report By Mitra Woody, Sustainer Liaison

• A big thank you to those sustainers who participated in Literacy Fiesta on February 13 in conjunction with JLSA’s signature project, Literacy San Antonio! • On Thursday, March 11, JLSA board members of past, present and future came together at The Quarry Restaurant to socialize and share “war stories” about their time on the board. This was a great opportunity for our current board members to hear from sustainers and learn from their experiences.

• Julia Child was unleashed on April 13 when sustainers met at the Central Market Cooking School. We learned classic French dishes including Beef Bourgonin and Chocolate Pot de Crème. • Welcome the JLSA New Member class of 2010-2011 by participating in the Super Saturday event on May 1 at 9:00 a.m. We would like to have our new members meet and mingle with sustainers. Please contact Mitra Woody if you would like to participate.

Building Mutual Value

“Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” - Rollo May

By Melissa Unsell, Communications Council Chair As we come to the end of our League year, I cannot help but reflect on the time that has passed and the accomplishments achieved. The Communications Council has taken large strides this year to aid in the promotion of our League, both internally and externally.
