A

nother year is indeed upon us and I hope all of you had a joyous New Year. In 2011, the Junior League of San Antonio had much to celebrate. JLSA returned to self-management of the Bright Shawl and the facility received a much needed facelift. If you have not visited the Bright Shawl recently, stop by for a delicious lunch and a look at some distinctive art by local artists. JLSA also continued rebranding efforts, creating new web sites for Holiday Ole Market, Fête du Cuvée and the Bright Shawl. Holiday Ole Market had another successful event, raising more than $175,000 for local charities. In 2012, we will not rest on our laurels, but will continue to support projects that define our League. Met Opera regional auditions (January 14 -15) is the longest running JLSA community project, making the dreams of young singers come true for more than 50 years. Saturday, February 25, JLSA will once again partner with Goodwill Industries as we “rummage around” town. This annual event allows the League to continue the tradition of the rummage sale, while also providing quality used items to the citizens of San Antonio. Lastly, on March 3, JLSA will unveil its newest signature fundraiser, Fête du Cuvée. This upscale fine wine auction will be the talk of the town, with celebrity chefs pairing food and wine selections; guests bidding on fabulous auction items; and the Bright Shawl being on display as THE venue to have an upscale, downtown event. Please plan to join us as we raise additional funds to support our community projects.

FYI

JLSA CONNECTIONS: Several new items have been added to Retail Therapy, JLSA’s online gift shop, to get your new year off to a stylish start. We offer sleeves for your Kindle and iPad, a laptop skin, pet bowls, mouse pads and more. You can also pick up a comfy JLSA tee, hat, or trendy tote for the next General Membership Meeting.

“Fun Facts” In 1986, we added an important new member to our office staff – a computer! A computer committee was put in place and consultants were hired to create a database for our staff and volunteers. It took almost six months for JLSA to begin using the computer because the technology was so advanced. Today, it seems like child’s play!

Check out all of the Retail Therapy items at www.cafepress.com/jlsa. All proceeds from Retail Therapy benefit JLSA.

WANTED: DYNAMIC NEW MEMBERS Do you know someone who would be perfect for Junior League? If so, now is the time to begin those member recruitment conversations. We’ve received a lot of interest and feedback regarding JLSA membership, in part thanks to new member marketing materials (created by the communications team) that were included in 6,000 Ole Marketplace shopping bags. More than 60 women attended the last prospective member meeting and we have already received applications from more than half of them. But, we still need more outstanding women for our new JLSA class. The next prospective new member meeting is January 10 at 6:00 pm. Afterwards, attendees will be encouraged to attend our general membership meeting to get a flavor for our meetings, experience the camaraderie of our members, share in exciting community partner information and learn about the impact we have on the San Antonio community. Encourage prospective members to visit our site (jlsa.org), then click on the “How to Join” button for more information and to complete an environmentally-friendly online application. For additional questions, please contact Jane Mozingo, 2011- 12 Admissions Chair at admissions@jlsa.org. Applications for the 2012 - 13 New Member Class are due February 1, 2012.

Each New Year starts with new resolutions, right? We all vow to be a better wife, girlfriend or friend. To make more home-cooked meals. To log a few more miles on the bike, treadmill or elliptical. To volunteer more and to make our community better.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Actually, as a JLSA member, you’ve already committed to that last item on your resolutions checklist, and you have this entire year to fulfill it by trying new things and taking an active role in JLSA activities. Consider trying something new to engage with JLSA this year, whether it’s a shift at the Met Opera (page 5), an evening of fun (and money-spending!) at Fête du Cuvée (page 6), or just getting to know the woman sitting a few seats away from you at a general membership meeting. 2012 promises a whole new year of opportunities. Start taking advantage of them today, and you won’t regret it! Natalie Tate, 2011-12 Print Publications Manager

JLSA - GOODWILL PARTNERSHIP Goodwill Industries and the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. are working together to help continue the JLSA Rummage Tradition which started so many years ago! Your clothes and items may not be a century old, but if they’re not quite new anymore, let them be part of the 88-year tradition, JLSA Rummage! Rummage has been an institution in San Antonio for a long time, and as the years have passed, it has evolved to carry on its effectiveness in fundraising and community improvement. Since 2008, the JLSA Rummage Sale has developed into a unique partnership with Goodwill Industries of San Antonio. With this new partnership, we’re still able to offer “Community Cash” to serve underserved families and to provide them the opportunity to shop and save at the Rummage Sale. It’s easy and efficient – and it really makes a difference for San Antonio families As the Holiday Season fast approaches and you are cleaning out closets making way for all of Santa’s loot, keep JLSA and Goodwill in mind. Goodwill offers 11 retail stores throughout the city, with donation stations at nine locations. JLSA members can gather their goods and drop-off their donations at any of the convenient locations. Donation bins will also be available at the January General Membership Meeting so you can bring in your donations and get your general meeting credit all at the same time (Remember, there is no 50% quota limit on women’s and children’s clothing anymore, so give as much as you want!). As an added bonus, we will be having a ‘What Not to Wear’ Fashion Show at the January General Membership Meeting with prizes for the best donations in several categories. The entries will come from the items you donated at the December General Membership Meeting. So, bring it all - those jeans that don’t fit, that bridesmaid’s dress you never wore again and the cruise wear only Staci and Clinton could love, for some fauxpas fashion fun! When you’re accumulating your contributions, don’t forget to complete your Quota Submission Form (Quota due January 25) so you can track your donations. The more goods we donate to Goodwill in the name of JLSA, the more “Community Cash” we can give to our Community Partners to use at the JLSA-Goodwill ‘Rummage’ Sale on February 25, 2012. You’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and trust us, your generous contributions will be gorgeously grand to those who can use them to make a better life.

MEET THE BOARD: BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Cameron Armstrong 2011-12 Community Council Chair Cameron wasn’t expecting to assume her current Board role, but JLSA is certainly lucky she did. Cameron has been extremely active in the League for several years in almost every way, from Rummage Sale to AMIGOS to membership and finally to her current position as Community Council Chair. One of her favorite JLSA moments? Watching new members transform Boysville last year. Cameron hasn’t been afraid to jump right in to League service, and her advice to others interested in leadership shares the key to her success: “Ask lots of questions and get involved. JLSA belongs to its members and is ours for the taking. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and ask for help if you need it.” Cameron’s drive for success and focus on service is not only irreplaceable in her JLSA position; they’re also a requirement for success in her professional life. Cameron’s business “Your Go Girl” helps make people’s lives a little easier, handling day-to-day concerns, from grocery shopping to wedding planning.

SPOTLIGHT ON: SUSTAINER It would be easy to get “carried away” praising Carri Baker Wells. Why? Because she’s so deeply involved in the community and so active in making San Antonio a better place that superlatives are superfluous. Carri is not only the COO at Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Simpson, LLP, but a mom and full time volunteer. She attributes her solid JLSA volunteer training as the foundation for opportunities to be Chairman of the Greater Chamber and the only woman to serve as Chairman of the 12th Man Foundation, in addition to many other civic and educational endeavors. Think Carri’s pretty impressive? Add to her slate of accomplishments the fact that she’s committed to wellness by exercising every day and she runs half marathons. Carri’s the kind of role model we’re fortunate to have in JLSA!

SPOTLIGHT ON: MEMBERSHIP Dana Cleveland sounds like Superwoman – she consults on educational projects, runs half-marathons and adventure races and is the mother of three six-year-olds. When you add to that the fact that Dana’s also a JLSA mentor, it’s clear that she has a heart for service and unflagging energy. Dana has been a League member since 2009 and her favorite JLSA project to date is serving at the Rainbow House, bringing extra cheer to the people there by helping them celebrate Christmas. One of the things that makes Dana unique as a JLSA mentor is the fact that she impresses her new members with the history and the legacy we carry as Junior League members. Dana looks at every League activity as an opportunity, and she inspires others to do so as well.

SPOTLIGHT ON: NEW MEMBER Stacey Rendon joined JLSA as a way to meet others who share a love for volunteerism and spotlight all that our city has to share. She’s already fulfilling that goal, completing her new member service hours and making a difference through her JLSA membership. Thanks to her mentor, Carrie Waisley, Stacey’s developed a love for the new member process within the League, and she’s interested in future placements that will serve membership and introduce new women to all JLSA has to offer. Stacey’s advice to new and future members? Join the fun and get ready to become a part of an awesome group of women with goals to enhance the city where we live by giving back!

COMMUNITY PLACEMENT: SPOTLIGHT

JLSA and Met Opera - In Perfect Harmony

METROPOLITAN OPERA NATIONAL COUNCIL SOUTHWEST REGION AUDITIONS Sunday, January 15, 2012 Trinity University, Ruth Taylor Recital Hall 2:00 p.m.

In 1959, Mag Tobin, a lifelong member of JLSA, served on the advisory/ managing board of the Metropolitan Opera. Mrs. Tobin was successful in bringing the first Southwest Region Auditions to San Antonio and connecting JLSA. JLSA has produced 53 auditions, making the MONC Southwest Region auditions our longest continuous community placement.

2011-2012 JLSA Met Opera Committee Heather Russo Director, Regional Auditions (Committee Chair)

Members of JLSA’s Met Opera committee commit to a 6-year placement, holding each position on the committee. Non-placed volunteers act as hostesses and production assistants, creating a warm, inviting environment for all participants. Over the years, San Antonio has become a favorite audition venue, thanks to the efforts of JLSA volunteers. Not only does JLSA provide volunteers for the Auditions, but we also are the sole underwriter for all the prizes given to the District Award winners.

Jackie Sliker Director, District Auditions Marjory Newman Staging Chair Maya Thukral Hospitality Chair

These auditions have made a major impact on opera talent, and winners from the Southwest Region are frequently national winners. Even singers who do not proceed to the New York auditions are heard by other opera companies and prospective employers.

Join us January 15, 2012, for the 53rd annual MONC Southwest Region auditions as JLSA’s Met Opera committee keeps the tradition alive and provides an afternoon of inspiring stories, heart-stopping drama and genuine Texas hospitality.

FUNDRAISING

WOMEN’S GUIDE TO WINE by Melissa Unsell

Let’s “Santé” at Fête du Cuvée! We will have a lot to celebrate as JLSA hosts our first wine auction. “Santé” is French for Cheers, and I imagine there will be lots of toasting on this fun evening. Now is the perfect time to freshen up your tasting skills and wine preferences. The event will cater well to oenophiles, and if you’re a new wine lover, you will easily become enthralled with the chef stations, where the perfect wines await to complement the food. To properly enjoy and analyze all the wines offered; remember these proper wine tasting techniques: Sight - Look at the color and clarity of the wine. Is the wine rich in color, is it opaque? The color can give you clues as to how old the wine is - white wine gains color with age and red wines loose color with age.

What’s New at the Bright Shawl?

According to Erica Clark, Sales Manager of the Bright Shawl, we can expect to see a lot of exciting things to happen at the Bright Shawl in the coming months. To ring in the New Year bring a friend or colleague to experience the addition of our Lunch “a

Swirl - Slightly swirl the wine so that it comes in contact with more oxygen (releasing the ethers and esthers in the wine) and increasing the aromas

la Carte” Menu featuring winners like “a cup and ½”, a juicy “Angus Burger”, “Focaccias”, “Melts”, “Gourmet Sandwich du Jour” all in conjunction with our brand new Buffet highlighting

Smell - Smell the wine and identify descriptors for the aromas. For new wine lovers, start with broad descriptors such as white fruits, red fruits, flowers, oak, smoke, chocolate, vanilla. For more seasoned drinkers, use more tailored descriptors such as apples, pears, blackberries, plums, raspberries, white gardenias, cigar box, and cassis.

Soup & Salad ($7.95) and a daily Chef’s choice hot Entrée with

Sip - To properly taste and examine the flavors of the wine, take a small sip and purse your lips while inhaling some air, then “chew” the wine and swallow. It’s always a good idea to take an initial sip to saturate your palate and then conduct the steps just described. The tasting technique above will allow the wine to penetrate all areas of your palate and mouth so that you can properly analyze all aspects of the wine.

Exciting upcoming events include the Bright Shawl’s

accompanying sides ($10.95). Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

inaugural Vintner’s Dinner on January 20. Experience a delectable four-course meal paired with an array of choice wines from Silver Oak Winery ($65 per person). Looking for a reason for relaxation? Enjoy Wine Down Wednesdays…

And remember, even though you may have your preferences in wine already, be adventurous and try new wines. You never know when you might discover a new favorite that delights your palate. For example, if you haven’t discovered an Italian Falaghina or an Austrian Grüner Vetliner, your palate may be missing out. Try new discoveries and have fun! Santé!

On the last Wednesday of each month, beginning January 25,

The Fête du Cuvée committee is working hard to insure that unique, high quality wines are offered up at the chef stations and for the auction. There will be great collector’s items for seasoned wine lovers as well as opportunities for new wine lovers to experience wine in a fun atmosphere.
