ctober in San Antonio is great. We know it’s Fall because of slightly cooler temperatures, football every weekend, and pleasant evenings outside. Another sign of Fall is the arrival of Holiday Olé Market! I am thrilled to welcome both guests and members alike to this year’s market. The Holiday Olé Market is one of two signature fundraisers for the Junior League of San Antonio. The money raised by this event goes to support the projects and programs of the Junior League of San Antonio, which includes over 60 different agencies each and every year. Funds raised at our events might, for example, go to help children maintain reading skills during the summer, screen elementary age children for potential vision problems, install rain barrels at community gardens, or to build a reading nook at a local agency. From fabulous shopping to fun parties, Holiday Olé Market has something for everyone. And, what’s better than knowing that your attendance helps support the League and its projects and programs while shopping. Fall is also the time we start to think about the next new member class which will begin in the Spring. If being part of an organization of amazing women who are passionate about helping in their community and developing their potential as leaders is something that is appealing to you or someone you know, then please visit the League’s website (www.jlsa.org) for more information. Thank you, in advance, for your support and attendance at this year’s event.

COMMUNITY

featured Story: Rummage Around Goodwill

J

unior League is well known in San Antonio for its signature fundraising events, though none as storied as the Rummage Sale. While it has taken on different shapes and forms in its 88-year history, this is the Junior League’s oldest fundraiser and has only grown stronger in the last 4 years through its partnership with Goodwill Industries of San Antonio.

Serving the city since 1945, Goodwill helps change lives through the power of work. Donations to or shopping at Goodwill funds educational programs and services that assist people in finding better jobs and building careers. Together with the support of its community, partners and employers, Goodwill provides employment, training, educational opportunities and related services to more than 50,000 individuals each year. Every year, Junior League members donate items to Goodwill in the League’s name. For every $3 in JLSA donations, Goodwill gives the League $1 in gift cards, up to $40,000. The League, in turn, distributes the gift cards to its Community Partners. Over the last four years, JLSA has distributed $70,000 in gift cards! The League is striving to meet its 2013 donation goal of $120,000 in order to give

our Community Partners the full benefit of our Goodwill Partnership. This year’s 89th Annual Rummage Around Goodwill Sale, to be held on February 23, 2013, will mark the culmination of this League-wide effort. Held at seven locations throughout San Antonio, the League hopes to honor the legacy of this long-standing fundraiser while utilizing the logistical and operational knowledge offered by our corporate partner. The League is exceedingly honored to work with Goodwill, an organization that reinvests 90 cents of every retail dollar earned into the community it serves. League members are committed to donating as many goods as possible in the months to come. Members of the community are asked to support this work and that of the Goodwill organization by shopping on the last Saturday of February, 2013, at the following Goodwill stores: Fredericksburg Rd., Blanco Rd., Bitters, De Zavala, South Park, Austin Highway and Gateway. For more information please contact: RummageAroundSale@jlsa.org.

spotlight: community organization Clarity Child Guidance Center Clarity Child Guidance Center exists to help children ages 3-17 who are experiencing behavioral and emotional difficulties. Designed for both short-term stays of a few days as well as long-term patients who can live at Clarity for up to several months at a time, the facility is dedicated to helping these children through traumatic and emotional times. As a Junior League of San Antonio placement, League members help by organizing evening sessions for the kids where they play games, read stories, and do arts and crafts. This social time is something the Clarity residents anticipate with excitement. JLSA members work with children ranging in ages from 5 to 12 years old who are staying at Clarity for longer periods of time. We currently have 10 JLSA volunteers working at Clarity every other Tuesday and one Saturday per month. Working with as many as 15 children at a time, volunteers help the children with art projects and games. The children are so appreciative to have this time with the JLSA volunteers that they often send the volunteers home with one of the art projects they created. Of course, every child’s favorite time is Snack Time! This is typically when the JLSA volunteers get swarmed by excited Clarity residents looking for a treat. Spending time with the JLSA volunteers is certainly a highlight of the week for the Clarity children, and seeing the kids light up and have a break in their daily struggles is a highlight for the JLSA members. The excitement and hugs that greet the Junior League members when they arrive, and the smiles and waves that send them off for the evening let them know that this is truly a placement that touches the lives of so many children in need. Clarity co-chairs Patia Sandifer and Katy Schultz are excited to bring another year of fun to Clarity. This will be Patia’s fourth year at Clarity and Katy’s second. As a seasoned veteran with Clarity Child Guidance Center, Patia says, “When we show up in the unit the children know we are going to have fun. It is great to see them light up and to take them away from any pain they may be faced with.”

members: making impact

The past three

years in the

Junior League of

San Antonio,

Lorena Pena has

experienced the

impact the League has on its members as well as our community. She recalls landscaping at the State Hospital—an event only 2 JLSA volunteers signed up for. “Honestly, I was worried [because] I had never done much gardening…I am not known for my green thumb.” She adds that after project completion, “You could see [the staff’s] excitement. They said now, the patients would have a more beautiful sitting area.” Lorena continues to enjoy the League in her current placement, Vice Chair of Training and Education. The biggest challenge has been finding events that are both educational and engaging for participants. Pena shared news of the JLSA Taboo Series, a discussion series that “will touch on subjects many members go through but no one talks openly about,” says Pena, topics such as fertility, children with special needs, and money matters. “We want to hit a plethora of interests so we can grow and learn, from not only experts, but from each other,”

Olé is on Pinterest! http://pinterest.com/holidayolemrkt/

explains Pena. Visit the Training & Education tab under Member Events on the site, and check out the dates, times, and provoking topics making up the Taboo Series.

Fête du Cuvée: information Fête du Cuvée, the Junior League of San Antonio’s newest and most elegant fundraiser, aims for an even higher goal than the $70,000 raised last year. Fête 2013 features bidding on exclusive lots and is a not-to-be-missed event for wine collectors and enthusiasts, alike. Tatiana Herrera-Schneider shared, Fête is a “celebration of the best of the best…a fabulous evening that includes food and wine pairings from nationally acclaimed chefs.” Mark your calendars for a brilliant evening celebrating wine and cuisine on Saturday, March 2, 2013. There were a few festivities before Fête, such as the Reserve Dinner, a 5-course dinner from Max’s Wine Dive on Friday, October 12; and the San Antonio Cellar Classic that was held on Saturday, October 13, when JLSA partnered with Max’s Wine Dive and Boiler House Texas Grill and Wine Garden, to

offer tastings of over 100 wines from around the world, all while indulging in chef-crafted specialties. Make sure to mark your calendar for these funfilled events in 2013! Events still to come: The Chef Announcement Party— Hosted by Frost Bank on Wednesday, November 14, guests will meet San Antonio’s finest chefs in a more intimate setting. spotlight on: sustainer As a member of the Junior League of San Antonio since 1995, Kathy MacNaughton has held many positions both in and outside of the League which have helped to support the community. As a fundraising and development professional for the past 23 years, Kathy has contributed some of her many skills to JLSA. Some of Kathy’s placements as a JLSA member have included working with Holiday Olé Market, SA Works, and holding the position of Sustaining Advisor for the Fund Development Council from 2004-2009. She has also shared her talents with the United Way as a board member, a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Council, and as a judge for the United Way Volunteer of the Year Awards. With her extensive affiliations with volunteer organizations and fundraising efforts, Kathy continues to be a key asset to the Junior League!

spotlight on: Membership Roxanne Mendler loves being part of the San Antonio melting pot. She loves the melding of different cultures into a diverse and beautiful whole. As a self-proclaimed “design junkie,” she also gets to enjoy putting pieces together into a harmonious whole. Maybe that’s why she does such a great job as JLSA’s FLEX Chair. In her role, she gives members the opportunity to make their JLSA experience fit their needs and allows them to achieve their goals for serving JLSA and the community. And, while she’s making JLSA and our community better, she’s also setting a good example for a future Junior League member, her four year-old, Isabel. “I want her to see me serving others,” Roxanne said. “JLSA allows me to do that.”

spotlight on: new member Opportunities to impact our community drew Angela Portwood to the Junior League of San Antonio. “I’m so proud of her,” says Diane Castillo of Portwood’s efforts to fulfill requirements before Angela and her husband Chris’ first child arrives in November. Outside of JLSA, the soon-to-be mom spends her time working as a Credit Risk Analyst and enjoys reading or running around her neighborhood. She expressed that Community Awareness tours have been eye opening, “It’s amazing what non-profits do for the community and how they strive to help more people, families, and animals.” Angela’s focused on enjoying the first-year commitments of JLSA and looking forward to discovering appealing placement options for next year.

meet the board: board member spotlight Denise Thieme This may only be her second year in the Junior League of San Antonio, but Denise Thieme is no stranger to the League or serving on the Board. Denise is currently filling the role of Vice Chair of Research and Development after having spent 12 years in Junior League. Denise transferred to JLSA last year from McAllen, where she had many placements over the years, including Board positions for six years and the role of President of Junior League of McAllen in 2010-2011. In her current role in Research and Development, Denise will lead the League in assessing current community placements to evaluate how they are doing, whether it is still a viable placement for the League, and whether we should add new placements or increase our footprint at current placements. Denise’s experience through her placements in McAllen will help to bring fresh ideas to JLSA placements as well. One of Denise’s favorite placements was one called “Bully Talk” when she was in McAllen. It involved a Junior League member and a police officer visiting third graders across the city to discuss how to deal with being bullied, and what the consequences are of being a bully. Her most memorable moment from this placement was during her first session when a shy young girl in the back of the room raised her hand and asked, “What happens when the bully lives in your own house?” At that moment, Denise knew she was involved in something special that fostered an environment where children could speak up and get help. Denise moved to San Antonio last year after marrying her husband, Ken, in 2010. Together they have a dog named Ulli and a cat named Katie. In her spare time, Denise likes to stay busy in the kitchen recreating some of her favorite recipes. Denise has certainly benefited on several levels from her time in Junior League. “When I joined, I joined for the volunteer aspect, but soon realized the true gem of Junior League is the amazing friends I have gained.”
