President’s Message Debbie Callihan-Dingle President 2012-2013

I

would like to begin with a huge congratulations to our Holiday Olé Market team! We had a fabulous market with outstanding events that continued in spite of a deluge. This group of ladies worked long and hard hours to pull this event together. If you see a committee member, share your thanks as well. Our next League-wide event will kick off in January with the Resolve for a Better SA 5K, our new member fundraising project. Make this a New Year’s resolution event for the whole family!! And if you don’t want to run, you can walk with me! The Rummage Around Goodwill Sale will follow quickly after. Again, another great way to keep up a New Year’s resolution and do a little early Spring cleaning. And, finally, the Fête du Cuvée will take place in early March, but more about that next time! While we often focus on our “big” League-wide events, every event and activity is part of what makes the League such a special place to be. Whether it is helping with a community garden, writing a newsletter article, or mentoring other members, every placement sustains and promotes the League while helping to fulfill our mission. As we approach the holiday season, it is only natural to do a little reflection. It is usually personal reflection, but sometimes is professional. I would also encourage you to reflect on your Junior League career. Soon after the New Year, we will begin looking at appointed jobs for next year. I would encourage you to think about what you would like to do and find something that will fit your skills. At the same time, I would challenge you to find something you always wanted to do but were a little hesitant. Why not give that a try too? After all, the Junior League of San Antonio IS a training organization. I wish each of you a joyous holiday season.

W

e’re headed into the season of turkey and dressing, of cookie exchanges, and of those notorious office holiday parties, all of which means your favorite outfits may get a little more snug and your favorite activity may become snuggling up on the couch with a candy cane and a DVD of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” But, JLSA is here to combat that holiday pattern, by helping members build resolve over the holidays instead of fitness regrets. JLSA will host its first ever 5K on January 12, 2013. Registration is $25 for early birds, which goes to aid in continuing the mission of the Junior League and serving our community. So, by participating in the 5K, you can not only make yourself and your fitness goals a little better, you can also make San Antonio a little better at the same time.

pate in the 5K. Just make a pre-holiday resolution to get started and train - you’ll be able to build up your stamina by the time the race rolls around! Some great training programs, like Couch to 5K, are available online and are easy to follow with no personal training required! The JLSA running club can also be a great resource, getting together with friends for runs/jogs/walks and finding strength in numbers.

Resident runners like Mireya Villarreal-Gideon and partner in crime Erica Ellis, along with a whole cohort of JLSA friends and spouses run races regularly, but you don’t have to be an all-star runner, or even be competitive, to partici-

meet the board: board member spotlight Janet Peavy is eagerly serving as JLSA’s Fund Development Council Chair. Even with all of the demands of her current board position, this busy mother of four children under the age of six still enjoys giving piano lessons and playing in amateur competitions as time permits. Last year, Janet was thrilled to have the chance to play with the San Antonio Symphony! She and her husband, Daniel, are also serving their church as community leaders this year.

Janet Peavy

In the nine years she has been a member of the Junior League, Janet has enjoyed the League’s major fundraising events, like the Golf Tournament, Holiday Olé Market, and Fête du Cuvée, and has grown especially fond of the JLSA Mom’s Group. Janet has, of course, served in many capacities, yet, the most fulfilling so far was volunteering at the battered women’s shelter where she was forever touched by a little four-year-old girl. That experience helped shape Janet into the League leader she is today and it informed the goals she sets as our Fund Development Council Chair.

spotlight: community organization Family Endeavors

In 2004, Family Endeavors opened at the Fairweather Lodge. With a goal of providing a safe environment promoting families to stay together, Family Endeavors gave homeless mothers, some struggling with mental illness, and their children stability and long-term support needed to continue as a family. Program participants receive access to affordable health care, life-skills and parenting classes, safe and affordable housing, access to healthcare, and childcare when needed. JLSA offers a placement with Family Endeavors, Co-Chaired this year by Michelle Garcia and Danielle Schick, the volunteers committing to spending three hours every other Saturday with the families. Currently, Family Endeavors services 20 mothers and 40-50 children, ranging in ages from newborn to 16 years old. The seven League members who have permanent placement with Family Endeavors work with the moms and children on life skills, arts and crafts, cooking and healthy meal preparation, and provide tutoring to moms pursuing their GEDs. Other times, JLSA volunteers simply spend time with the children, playing

Fund Development Council report JLSA has exciting sponsorship news to share! Lee Michaels has signed a two-year sponsorship with JLSA that is renewable for three years. Lee Michaels had title sponsorship of Olé Girls’ Night Out, donating VIP martini glasses and branded jewelry for the event. For Fête Du Cuvée, Lee Michaels will provide table sponsorship, jewelry donation, and patron gifts. Lee Michaels will also provide golf team sponsorship and production of board pins. Portions of last month’s The Cellar Classic, put on by Lasco Enterprises (Max’s Wine Dive and Boiler House) went to benefit the League. We are happy to announce that our newest sponsorship, Porsche of San Antonio, will be sponsoring Preview Party for Fête.

games or reading. Garcia shared, “The moms don’t get the same opportunities we take for granted daily, like quiet time, a babysitter for kids, and craft supplies to make home decorations.” Meeting needs of so many with so few volunteers is no small challenge, but it is one Schick and Garcia are facing head-on. “Having 75 to serve with only seven volunteers [is tough], but we are overcoming that by relying on Sustainers and by coordinating with Crystal Fuller to get as many Placement Samplers as possible.” The struggle continues for the co-chairs as we enter the holiday season. In years past, placement members adopted families for the Family Endeavors Christmas Party. “This year we need to adopt out. Christmas presents from League members are the only presents some families

Lesley is also a major advocate for the League’s new Signature Project – Preventing Childhood Obesity. As a pediatric registered nurse, Lesley is very involved with children’s health and sees the impact childhood obesity has on our community, our country, and on a global level. With this being a new Signature Project for JLSA, the Signature Project Team is currently raising awareness within the League and the community, and is working with other organizations to find the perfect fit to make the biggest impact. When Lesley is not busy with her Junior League activities, you might find her doing a number of other things. She and her husband, John, love to golf and travel, and Lesley even managed to write two novels in her spare time last year! She is such a strong supporter of Junior League and enjoys it so much that she has to keep reminding her husband why he can’t join in the fun! Way to go, Lesley!

spotlight on: sustainer Thille Newton has been a Junior League member and sustainer in many areas, including Mexico City, Tucson, and now, San Antonio. In these areas, she enjoyed placements such as working in Mexico City’s thrift shops and bookstores. As a JLSA sustainer, she is actively involved in STUFF (Sustaining Transfers United For Fun). It’s one way she follows her own advice of “enjoying League friendships,” because she and the other ladies of STUFF get together monthly for luncheons, community tours and events, and dinners with husbands/friends. While Thille and the other ladies of STUFF may have ended their service as actives, they’re still busy, connected and active in our community!

spotlight on: membership Passionate about literacy and education, Mallory Ahl was a Teach for America Corps member, and joining the JLSA upon moving to San Antonio six years ago was a natural fit. “I was looking to volunteer [while] getting a broad view of issues affecting our city.” Currently Vice Chair of New Members, Ahl has found her niche and loves the ideas new members bring into the League. On Super Saturday, Ahl shared that new members found inspiration in learning a League member founded Sunshine Cottage 65 years ago. For Ahl, success and growth in the League boils down to placement selection: “Talk to mentors; board, committee and council members; and placement chairs. When [members] find their fit, they are more effective in and enthusiastic about their positions.”

spotlight on: new member A native of San Antonio, Carissa Pool is excited to be able to give back to her community as a New Member of the Junior League of San Antonio. In the last few months, Carissa has enjoyed getting to know several JLSA members through volunteering with SA Works. This has allowed her to see different parts of our community that she has never explored before, such as the Mission San Jose and the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Carissa currently works as a physical therapist specializing in the pelvic floor region. In this role, she helps both male and female patients maintain their quality of life both preand post-surgery. In her spare time, we can find Carissa focusing on her hobbies, which include spending time with friends and family, doing outdoor activities, Pilates, bow hunting, and trying her hand at cooking.

FYI

Special update Olé Recap

Another Holiday Olé Market has come and gone, leaving the JLSA with another successful fundraiser and fond memories for the countless shoppers and party-goers who graced its aisles! Holiday Olé Market Communications Chair, Emily Willeford, said this year’s event had a “great turnout, really fun merchants, and that [the market’s] newest events, ‘Starstruck: A Red Carpet Event’ and ‘Pajamas and Pancakes,’ exceeded our expectations.” Live music by “The Pictures” at the Preview Party and DJ Future Sounds at Thursday night’s “Girl’s Night Out,” drew the crowds and added a festive mood to the each program’s events. JLSA member and WOAI reporter, Mireya Villarreal-Gideon, handily led the live auction at the Preview Party, and was acted as emcee for Ready, Set, Shop.

Online Boutique Olé is over, but you don’t have to give up on shopping for a cause! Instead, redirect your dollars to the JLSA’s Retail Therapy, your online resource for all things JLSA (cafepress.com/jlsa). From Performance Dry shirts perfect for the JLSA 5K to totes, car decals and mugs (great stocking stuffers for JLSA friends!), you can support JLSA in style – and your purchases help promote awareness of our League in the community. So, start shopping today!

All in all, it was a festive and successful week, raising tens of thousands of dollars for Junior League programs and the praise of many of the vendors who said that JLSA has the greatest volunteers of any show they attend! A rewarding week, indeed!
