President’s Message Debbie Callihan-Dingle President 2012-2013
H
appy New Year! I hope each and every one of you had a joyous holiday
season. The beginning of the New Year always gives me an incentive to do some reflection. When I joined the League, I looked forward to being on the rummage committee and then maybe working in membership (being president had never crossed my mind). Like many of you, I was looking forward to “making a difference” and making some new friends. I had been a teacher for quite some time by then and was anxious to meet ladies who were outside of my usual circle. After my first few meetings, I was truly amazed at the dynamic individuals I was fortunate enough to encounter. We all came from different backgrounds, but yet had come together for the same purpose. I have had some incredible experiences during my Junior League journey, but that early sentiment is always with me. As the Junior League, we are an amazing group of women with amazing skills and abilities who are able to achieve great and long-

many ways, very much the same. Day-in and day-out, we want to make a difference in the community, make new friends, and have a little fun along the way. That is what makes us, the Junior League, so special. I hope you were able to join us for our January meeting where we heard a special guest panel made up of women city leaders sharing their experiences. What a great opportunity for us to find out additional ways for us to make a difference.
Resolve for a Better SA 5K coming up on January 12, and the JLSA Rummage Around Goodwill Sale on February 23. Two more ways for us to make a difference in the community and in our own lives. Until next time,

featured Story: Prevent Blindness Texas Since its establishment as a non-profit, voluntary health agency in 1956, Prevent Blindness Texas has been driven by a mission of providing a continuum of vision care, saving sight and enhancing the quality of vision for Texans through public education, sight-saving programs, and networks of volunteers. Prevent Blindness trains and certifies screeners to help identify preschoolers at risk of lazy eye, to improve students’ vision for school success, and to help spot glaucoma or other serious vision problems in adults. Prevent Blindness has over 332 trained volunteers in Texas, and last year alone, 20,894 children and 11,385 adults were screened across the state.
hour shifts, once a week for eight weeks. This year, JLSA members screened approximately 5,000 students at SAISD schools and donated 260 volunteer hours, especially impressive, notes Farringer, “considering that with a smaller committee, 1,500 more students were screened than last year. The more kids we screen, the more kids with vision problems are referred and get the vision care they need.” Farringer would like to recognize her “fabulous” committee: Cassie Schneider, Sarah McKee, Robin Waters, Ashley Jackson, and Lenka Lehmann.
JLSA member Anne Farringer chose placement as a volunteer for Prevent Blindness to fulfill her want of “an interesting, hands-on community placement,” and four years later, she’s still happy with her decision. Now in her second year as Prevent Blindness Chair, Anne not only screens and coordinates JLSA efforts, she also serves on Prevent Blindness Texas Leadership Council. “I continue to volunteer for Prevent Blindness because it is so rewarding; I enjoy that my time is well utilized and [that] the work we do is very valuable,” shares Farringer. JLSA Prevent Blindness committee members receive training to become a State of Texas certified vision screener. Working in teams of two to three, volunteers work in five-

IMPACT
spotlight: community organization Green Spaces Alliance
The Green Spaces Alliance JLSA committee currently has eight members who tend to 33 gardens in their Community Garden Network. They spend four hours, one Saturday a month, going to the GSA’s community gardens and establishing new garden beds and maintaining existing ones. In this way, they help this local environmental organization to achieve their community garden goals, while carrying out those of the JLSA. As part of this committee, Shannyn’s most memorable activity thus far was working at the Fiskars Event at the East Side Community Garden. She describes the garden in a state of disrepair, with “rotting beds, dead plants, and lots and lots of ants.” However, after a day spent partnering with the Fiskars team and members of the Home Depot Foundation, the garden was transformed into a “welcoming community space.” Not bad for a few hours on a Saturday morning! Shannyn says that all of her placement members have a love of nature and of learning. Learning about the people the garden will benefit and of gardening know-how, such as proper planting techniques and bed placement for optimal sun exposure. With each new “healthy, vibrant garden,” the committee puts their JLSA stamp on a small plot of earth in San Antonio, living the mission and carrying out the goals of our organization. To celebrate the new cookbook, here’s the most famous “old” recipe.
Almond Crunch Cake
Many people would describe gardening as a labor of love. This adage takes on a whole new meaning for members of JLSA’s Community Placement, Green Spaces Alliance. This placement partners the JLSA with the Community Gardens Program within the Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas, whose focus, according to the committee’s co-chair, Shannyn Romero, is to “build communities, preserve green space, and provide education on the value of growing fresh food.”

Cake: 1 ½ cups sifted flour 1 ½ cups sugar, divided 8 eggs ¼ cup cold water 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon salt Sift together flour and ¾ cup sugar. Make a well in the center, add egg yolks, water, lemon juice, vanilla, and beat until smooth. Beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt just until soft peaks form. Add remaining sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, continuing to beat until stiff. Fold flour mixture gently into egg whites. Pour batter into a 10 inch tube pan or two 2 quart baking pans. Do not grease pan. Cut carefully through the batter, going around tube 5 or 6 times with a knife, to break air bubbles. Bake at 350°F for 50-55 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched. Invert pan 1 hour or until cool. Remove cake and split into 4 equal layers if using a tube pan. Make either 2 or 4 layers if using baking pans. Almond 1 ½ cups sugar Brittle ¼ teaspoon instant coffee Topping: ¼ cup light corn syrup ¼ cup hot water 1 tablespoon sifted soda 2-2½ cups heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla Almonds, blanched, halved and toasted Combine sugar, coffee, syrup, and water in a saucepan, stirring well. Goodwill Update and Reminder: Please remember to take your donations to Goodwill before January 31st, the last day to submit your quota forms. We need to collectively donate a minimum value of $75,000 in order to receive $25,000 in gift cards to give back to the community. But the Junior League wants to do more than just the minimum! Our big goal is $120,000 in donations in order to receive $40,000 in gift cards. The more we donate, the more we can directly help our community. As of December 3rd, we were 42% of the way to the minimum and 26% to the big goal. Help the Junior League of San Antonio reach our big goal – Make your donation today!
Putting a little cheer into the lives of seniors around San Antonio – that’ s the mission of JLSA’s Sunshine Singers. These enthusiastic women light up senior centers and retirement homes with popular standards of the 30s, 40s and 50s, taking their listeners on a trip down memory lane and encouraging them to really get into the shows and sing along! Sunshine Singers is open to anyone who is willing to have a smile on their face and some music in their heart. “You don’t have to know how to dance or sing,” said Michelle Parker, Sunshine Singers co-chair. While the Sunshine Singers typically spend the fall visiting San Antonio seniors, they do have a couple of changes of pace during the year. On Halloween and Christmas, Singers are encouraged to bring their families and really get into the holiday spirit. And, on Veterans Day, they give a special performance at the VA Hospital in honor of our veterans’ service. Singing, dancing and making the world a better place – sounds pretty great, right? According to Parker, the performances are just part of what makes this placement so special: “The best thing is the instant feeling of warmth you get when one of our seniors tells us they have been waiting all year for us to come back, because you know those are precious moments for them.”
JLSA Fun Facts • In 1930-1931, there was a contest to collect the most newspapers, called the “JL newspaper contest.” The winner received $200 (with inflation, that prize value is worth over $2,600 today!) This event raised money for the JLSA children’s clinic. • In the 1930s, weekly fashion shows were held during lunch at the Bright Shawl that featured clothes appropriate for the season and holidays.

members making impact Jenna Hiller Jenna Hiller is staying busy as the Fête du Cuvée Sales Chair, preparing for the League’s second annual fundraising event. But that’s not all. Jenna’s schedule as a reporter with KSAT leaves her with little free time and even less sleep. The positive impact her reporting has on the community makes it all worthwhile, even if her day begins at 3:30 a.m. Jenna most enjoys the opportunity to report about the positive impact people are making within the community and highlight the way our city is growing and changing, often for the better. Her recent story about the fire department installing new smoke detectors in a home directly resulted in an increase of requests for smoke detectors to the department. When she’s not keeping us informed, Jenna can be found spending time with her daughter and extremely supportive husband. During a recent health scare with her daughter, Jenna experienced an outpouring of support and friendship from her newly claimed San Antonio community. Her best coping mechanism was talking with friends, family members, and coworkers. JLSA has given Jenna the opportunity to see San Antonio in a different way. It has introduced her to the needs of our community and to those who work so tirelessly to fill in the gaps. She hopes to use her professional career as a platform to increase the exposure of the League and all that it does for the community. She truly believes that if more people knew what we do with our money and volunteer hours, we would have even more support and be able to make a bigger impact. Thank you, Jenna, for your support of the League and your desire to share our good work with so many others.

spotlight on: sustainer We are thrilled to spotlight an amazing sustainer trio: Kathryn Howie, Brooke Shannon and Nancy Woodall. These women have served JLSA together in many ways throughout the years, but their favorite placement was four years with Olé. The Olé committee helped make them the women they are today; prepared to take on anything that life throws their way. “Happy to Do It” was their Olé Committee theme and it was clear to see them embody that through their spirited teamwork, strong leadership, and ability to make things happen. One favorite memory was the Olé Assistant Chair retreat at Lake LBJ – 36 hours of getting to know one another over planning, games, laughing, and (because it’s Olé) drinks. They were solid before that weekend but after, unstoppable. Today this threesome is still going strong with couples night out, celebrating birthdays, and even taking their daughters to see Taylor Swift at the Rodeo. We’re inspired by their commitment to the Junior League and the lifetime friendship they continue to grow.
spotlight on: membership Michelle Garcia deems JLSA “a gift you give yourself.” During her years of membership, Garcia served placements at Seton Home, as a New Member Mentor, and is currently Co-Chair of Family Endeavors, all of which she’s found valuable. “Our League is amazing; it feeds us as much as it enhances our community,” she gushes about our League. Garcia gives 100% to League activities and, in fact, shares that attitude is one of the keys to fulfillment as a member. “Time ticks slowly when you’re standing around or have a bad attitude. [With a] goal to always be busy, volunteer shifts become fun!”
spotlight on: new member A big welcome to Jenna-Beth Lyde, a new member of the League this year! Jenna-Beth joined JLSA because she was interested in expanding her volunteer opportunities and also to get to know the great group of ladies that make up JLSA. So far, Jenna-Beth has been having a great time discovering some of the volunteer events that the League has to offer, such as Chalk It Up and Green Spaces Alliance. She recently volunteered at Olé and received special recognition from one of our VIP vendors, the “doll lady,” for her help with getting them moved into the venue. Jenna-Beth currently runs Parish Photography in Alamo Heights and she would like to eventually bring her photography skills to the League. Other than photography, JennaBeth also enjoys kayaking, reading, doing home projects, playing sand volleyball, and spending time with her dog, Fiesta. Welcome aboard, Jenna-Beth!

meet the board: board member spotlight Kristen Henry Meet Kristen Henry, the current Treasurer of the Junior League of San Antonio. Kristen has been involved in many placements in the League since her start six years ago, but she credits her role as Treasurer as the one that has given her an inside look into JLSA and has taught her about how our League runs from a financial standpoint. When she’s not focusing on finance, Kristen is at the opposite end of the scale, teaching English at Harlandale High School, where she is also the Assistant Department Chair for the English Department there. Before stepping into the position of Treasurer, one of Kristen’s favorite placements was acting as a New Member Mentor, where she was able to guide new members through their first exciting, and sometimes hectic, year in JLSA. In addition to her full-time placements, Kristen enjoys art, music, and reading, and she is also involved with the JLSA Running Club. Outside of both her work and her Junior League commitments, Kristen enjoys spending time with her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Izzie, and her family who live nearby throughout the Central Texas region. A special thanks to Kristen for all her hard work in the League throughout the years!
