President’s Message
Debbie Callihan-Dingle President 2012-2013
2013 has started off as a good year!! We have been very busy as a League these first few months of the year! Our placements are going strong; SAWorks has been making an impact; our New Member class is wrapping up their first year; our training events have been popular; the first ever 5K was a tremendous success; and, Fête du Cuvée had a magnificent evening that exceeded budget goals! It has been a whirlwind! Another League-wide event that was huge accomplishment was the Rummage Around Goodwill Sale, held at seven locations throughout the city in February. It was such a great feeling to be able to visit each site and see the impact of the Junior League. At one location, my visit coincided with the visit of some of the ladies and families from Family Endeavors – one of our community partners and one of the recipients of Community Cash for the sale. Our volunteers worked with the moms to buy needed household items for themselves and their children. I witnessed two very happy 9 year old girls who found shiny purple and silver lamps for their bedroom and some new clothes for school. They are the reasons that we do what we do in our League involvement whether it is in the community, in fund, in membership, or in communications. We are all part of the bigger picture. At the end of February, I hosted the past presidents of the JLSA at a luncheon. It is the one time each year that all past presidents are able to come together to visit, catch up, ask questions, and learn about what is going on in the League. One of those past presidents, Jeanie Travis, is being honored in March as our Volunteer Extraordinaire!! Each year the League honors one of its own sustainers for the work she has done in the community. This year’s recipient has been heavily involved with the military and military families among many other numerous accomplishments. All League members are invited to attend the event. If you are unable to attend the luncheon, I hope you will join me for the April General Membership Meeting. Jeanie Travis will share a brief history of the League and I promise you will find her delightful! Until next time,
Debbie

Fundraising Recap: Goodwill rummage around The 89th Rummage Around Goodwill event, held Saturday, February 23, was a great success, and it’s because of all of the Junior League of San Antonio members who donated not only their quota, but also their time to volunteer at the seven San Antonio area Goodwill locations. The locations were: Austin Highway, Bitters at 281, Blanco at 410, DeZavala at I-10, Fredericksburg Road at Vance Jackson, Gateway Plaza at 1604 and I-35, and South Park at SW Military and I-35. Volunteers at all seven stores were busy from the moment the doors opened. JLSA members donated at least 84 hours of time to contribute to the success of the day. The time quickly passed for everyone as they helped to stock Julia’s Attic, bagged cus-
tomer purchases, registered door prize winners and then got the bonus of making people smile when they found out they’d just won a Goodwill gift card. Every JLSA member knows what it’s like to wait for their name to be called at General Membership meetings for the end of the night door prize. Imagine getting to make a stranger smile every half-hour just by calling their name as a lucky winner! Special thanks go to all of the volunteers, especially those that acted as store captains: Cameron Armstrong, Letty Gonzalez, Gretchen Luistro, Kathleen Mackerer, Marci Ocanas, Denise Thieme, and Kelly Wentz.
Recap: resolve for a better sa 5K The inaugural JLSA fundraiser, Resolve For A Better SA 5K, was a great success for the League! Out of the 286 registered runners, about 220 ran that morning, despite the cloudy skies threatening rain. The runners enjoyed a route that started and ended at the Bright Shawl, following the San Antonio River Walk along the new Museum Reach extension. The vendors and the many activities for children were also highlights of the day. The 5K Committee was very excited about how everything turned out at
our newest fundraising event, and they would like to thank the New Member Class, the Mentors, the New Member committee, and the JLSA Office Staff for their hard work and dedication to this cause. Special appreciation also goes out to everyone who helped the fundraising efforts through the website. When everything was said and done, Resolve For A Better SA 5K brought in just over $9,000 that will go back to the League and its mission!
Recap: fÊte du cuvÉe Over 300 guests, eight acclaimed chefs, one magnificent night. Fête du Cuvée popped the cork on March 2 at the Bright Shawl. Co-chairs Sheila Mayfield and Julie Moczygemba and the committee are excited to announce that the event successfully raised over $100,000 to benefit the community programs and projects of the Junior League of San Antonio. During the black-tie affair, guests enjoyed food and wine pairings from eight acclaimed San Antonio chef’s, sipped on over twenty wine tasting options and bid on a variety of exclusive silent and live auction lots. This year’s featured chefs included Jeffery Balfour, Executive Chef, Hotel Valencia Riverwalk; Stefan Bowers, Executive Chef, FEAST; John Brand, Executive Chef, Ostra at Mokara Hotel & Spa and Las Canarias at Omni La Mansión del Rio; Geronimo Lopez, Executive Chef, NAO – New World Flavors; James Moore, Executive Chef, Boiler House Texas Grill & Wine Garden; and John Russ, Executive Chef, Lüke San Antonio. Each chef prepared dishes and paired them with selected wines for attendees to enjoy. Additionally, the evening included dessert pairings by

IMPACT
spotlight: community organization CORE
Two years ago, former JLSA President, Gretchen Garceau-Kragh, envisioned a committee to increase the League’s presence around the City of San Antonio and to learn more about the community organizations with which JLSA can and needs to become involved. A direct result of Garceau-Kragh’s, “Know No Boundaries” campaign, the Community OutReach and Education committee, or CORE, was created. Yvonne Garces, a CORE volunteer, admits that the committee works hard to dispel the notion that the group simply “focuses on political issues or relations with politicians.” In fact, CORE’s current goals are to work with the city’s groups and organizations to learn where JLSA is needed the most, encourage these groups to apply for JLSA “Done-In-aDay” projects and grants, and to help JLSA volunteers learn more about San Antonio and the impact they can have by reaching out to their elected officials. Members of the CORE work as liaisons between two community organizations and the JLSA by familiarizing themselves with the groups’ mission and goals, identifying opportunities to increase the Leagues’ participation with them, and educating JLSA members about these groups. Organizations include the City of San Antonio City Council and Mayor’s Office, Downtown Alliance, San Antonio Nonprofit Council and the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women, among others.
bright shawl: updates Lunch is served at The Bright Shawl Monday through Friday from 11 AM – 2 PM. If you show your JLSA membership card, you receive 10% off! In addition to delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches, The Bright Shawl’s reasonably priced Tea Room Menu features several tasty vegetarian options (see the back cover for a full menu). Stop in and support the League while having a wonderful meal!
The current committee, made up of one chair and six volunteer members, has held roundtable lunches with San Antonio City Council Members and recently hosted a panel of guest speakers including Justice Marialyn Barnard, Former Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade, and City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor at a JLSA General Meeting. This event was the highlight of Garces’ work within CORE and notes that her “favorite part of this placement is seeing the keen interest that city and community leaders have in the mission of JLSA and partnering with us.” Soon, the group hopes to host another roundtable luncheon with the City Manager. photo from Rae Del Sol Photography

COMMUNITY
members: making impact
volunteer extraodinaire: jeanie Travis
San Antonio is home to many businesses, some of which have been around for many years and have helped to shape the city’s economy and foster its communities. JLSA is lucky to have two members who help to carry on the traditions of these long-time family businesses that are still working at building San Antonio’s economy and giving back to the community. Helen Dear is fourth generation and Vice President of Porter Loring Mortuaries which was founded by her great grandfather, Porter Loring, Sr. in 1918. Her main role is a funeral director, but she is also responsible for public relations and marketing, as well as overseeing other employees. Helen knew from the time she was young that she wanted to be a funeral director. She grew up watching her father and grandfather help soothe people in their time of need, and she wanted to follow in their footsteps helping people in ways that not everyone could. Currently, Porter Loring employs about 100 people between their two locations and they hope to expand to a third location in the next few years. As a local family-owned business, Porter Loring does its best to support other local businesses by looking to San Antonio companies for it marketing, printing, and banking needs, to name a few. Porter Loring employees are highly encouraged to participate in non-profit and charitable organizations to support the community that has supported them for the last 95 years. (continued on p. 7)

Jeanie Travis is a “product of the League.” Of her early League experience, she shares, “I didn’t sit in the back row, waiting to be asked [to do something].” Her outlook is infectious—every task is opportunity; everyone, a resource. “Name someone,” challenges Travis, “and I’ll tell you something I learned from them.” Reflecting on her first leadership position, Jeanie beams, “All of a sudden, I realized there was something in me.” Of all leadership positions held, Treasurer taught the most: “I learned the business end of volunteering…my experiences grew into an expertise,” and she humbly adds, “I did these things because I didn’t know I couldn’t.” League-learned skills became doorways to professional opportunities seeking Jeanie’s knowledge of non-profit governance and mastery of grantsmanship, financing, and donor database management. Beyond marketable talents, League involvement led her to serve other organizations—ones with central values of giving back: Preservation Fort Sam Houston, Military Civilian Club, Fiesta San Antonio Commission, and Alamo Mission Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas (to name a handful). “When you connect people with causes, you can do anything,” explains Jeanie. As the daughter and sister of soldiers, dedication to the military is in Jeanie’s blood. From time as a sixteen-year-old candy striper at BAMC, to her first board position on Red Cross, and now serving the Wounded Warrior Family Support Center, her military support has come full circle. A few significant volunteer events Jeanie recalls are the 5th Army Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 at the Alamo, Ronald McDonald House, Library Foundation, and Zoobilation Ball. For Jeanie, not volunteering “would be like an artist unable to paint. When trained to volunteer, you have to do it.” Join the celebration of this amazing Volunteer Extraordinaire Wednesday, March 27, at 11:30 a.m. at The Bright Shawl. Jeanie asks attendees bring a book to donate to children of Wounded Warriors.

JLSA: Where we Stand It’s been another big year for JLSA. As a group of women committed to voluntarism, we’ve given, served, led and mentored. As a group of women forging relationships and strengthening bonds, we’ve added to our numbers, grown closer to friends, and extended warm welcomes. Here’s a look at where we stand this year and how JLSA continues to strive for success. Membership Adding new members and maintaining current membership are both important factors in continuing to strengthen our League. We embrace new members; offer training resources and volunteer opportunities for active members; and provide continuing connections for sustaining members. We currently have 395 active members who are giving generously of their time and resources to serve San Antonio through JLSA. And, we’ve set the stage for continuing impact by welcoming 96 new members during the past year. Of course, our League also benefits from the continuing support of more than 700 sustaining members, women who continue to believe in and support the mission of JLSA. We also recognized the effect life’s challenges may have on maintaining active membership in JLSA. Through the Re-Member campaign, former members were given the opportunity to resume participation in JLSA. More than 50 former members have expressed interest in returning to JLSA participation and service. Community Service Continuing to maintain and increase membership in JLSA is important because it helps us achieve our mission of serving and making our community better. During the 2012 year, the Junior League of San Antonio gave more than 4,000 hours of community service to help almost 90,000 people. Through gifts of time and service, we touch thousands of lives and make the world a better place. In addition to gifts of time, members also gave more tangible gifts. JLSA donated more than $95,000 in gently used items to Goodwill in preparation for the Rummage Sale, which will allow us to better serve our community partners. 2012 was a great year… 2013 is looking even better… and we’re just getting started! Our League is doing great things. Look for new, exciting ways to get involved as well, such as our new placement, the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and a still-in-development signature project. We couldn’t do this without each and every one of you - thanks for your support!

members: making impact (cont.) Sara Brouillard currently works in the Marketing Communications department at Broadway Bank, which was started by her great grandparents right here in San Antonio. Sara focuses on marketing for Broadway Bank’s Commercial Banking Team and their Corporate Brand, which is important because Broadway Bank has always upheld its reputation as a community bank that is vital to helping businesses get started, allowing organizations to grow and to make sure San Antonio residents’ assets are safe and secure. All banks have similar products but it is the customer service touch that sets them apart from the big banks. One of Sara’s main roles is to make sure the company continues to be here for the good of the community, just as her great grandparents did. Broadway Bank made an enormous impact in the community in 2012 by donating over $600,000 to more than 500 local community organizations! The Broadway Bank employees were able to assist low-income families with preparing their tax returns, and contributed over 12,000 volunteer hours to 154 different charitable projects. As San Antonio continues to grow, it becomes more and more important to recognize the businesses that helped build our community. And when these companies are able to support the communities they operate in and give back charitably, it becomes a win-win situation for all. Thank you to Helen and Sara for supporting San Antonio both through your jobs and through JLSA!

spotlight on: sustainer Dana Wilkirson has been a member of several Junior Leagues, especially since she’s moved to eight different cities during the past 30+ years. Since moving to San Antonio, she’s discovered the uniqueness and warmth of our city, especially the overwhelming friendliness of San Antonians. As a sustainer taskforce member and a co-chair of STUFF (Sustaining Transfers United for Fun), Dana has been able to see San Antonio and JLSA’s connective culture up close and personally. During a STUFF outing to an olive farm, she mentioned wanting to get involved, then received a deluge of information from other well-connected transfers!
spotlight on: membership Why does Libby McKelvain give her time to JLSA? It’s not just because she has “fear of missing out,” though her friends tease her about her desire to be so involved. Libby volunteers because she really believes in the JLSA mission. This year, she’s helping transfers acclimate to JLSA and our community, and last year, she served as a Holiday Olé Market co-chair, which made her truly appreciate the fundraising side of JLSA. When she’s not busy volunteering, Libby’s spending time with her “incredible” husband and her two boys, Wortham and Boyd, volunteering with Chi Omega/Make-a-Wish, and cheering on Aggie sports.
spotlight on: new member New Member, Elizabeth Tennant credits her family and her time at Texas A&M with her desire to volunteer and be involved in her community. Upon moving back to San Antonio, this 6th grade NEISD math teacher decided to join JLSA as an avenue to foster this tradition in her life. Her favorite part of her new member year has been the time she spent volunteering at the Children’s Bereavement Center, an organization she sees as an, “invaluable resource to the community.” Elizabeth is also heavily involved with the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, serving on two committees and holding a leadership board position. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her three dogs and outdoor activities, including waterskiing, snow skiing, and exploring all the Texas Hill Country has to offer. Elizabeth seems a great fit within JLSA and we are lucky to have her!

meet the board: board member spotlight After 18 years in the League, Barbara Mohs presents an unwavering enthusiasm for opportunities the League provides for “developing the potential of women,” and she values how each placement teaches her something new about herself. “I never considered quitting [and] enjoy how the League is structured to make serving accessible and enjoyable.” Rather than viewing JLSA requirements as something to be checked off, Mohs offers a different attitude, “Serve on each council, step up to leadership positions, and meet lifelong friends.” Leadership roles are fulfilling to her, but Mohs’ most memorable experiences occur when she learns from others. Currently serving as Sustaining Advisor to the Board, Mohs credits the position with making her become a better listener and she appreciates the new friends made during her placement. Resolve for a Better SA 5K stands out as an awesome event for Mohs—“I can’t wait to participate in years to come!”
