President’s Message Debbie Callihan-Dingle President 2012-2013 It’s hard to believe that this Junior League year is almost over. I don’t know about you, but for me it has been a wonderful, crazy whirlwind of activities, meeting people, and events! I continue to be so thrilled, honored, and deeply humbled to have had the opportunity to serve as your President in 2012-2013. Last Spring, I began my introduction article with the following: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” (Sir Winston Churchill). This is what the Junior League does. We are an organization of women who work elsewhere during the day and who come together during the day, at night, and on weekends to accomplish great things through community placements; through in-League placements to support membership; through fundraising to support the League and its projects; and, through communications to promote the League. We “make lives” for our community partners and for each other by our gifts of time, energy, commitment, and volunteer hours. We make lives better by what we do. How did we make lives better this year? The Junior League of San Antonio:
...donated over $95,000 worth of merchandise to Goodwill
...distributed $21,000 of gift cards to community partners to use at the sale
...served over 97,000 people in the community
...continued relationships with over 60 community agencies
...gave $32,385 in grants to community partners
...raised 87% of our fundraising goal
...welcomed 85 new members in the 2012-2013 class
...embarked on a new Signature Project focusing on childhood obesity prevention
...began an in-League Leadership Program (G.O.A.L.)
...finalized plans for rebuilding the parking lot
The list could go on and on. Be proud of what we have accomplished. I know that the 2013-2014 Board of Directors and Leadership is ready to assume their roles. And, I, for one, cannot wait to see what great things happen in the year and years to come! Thank you for coming with me to impact, change, and “make” lives during this 2012-2013 League year. I hope that it was as a fulfilling year for each one of you as it was for me. All the Best,
Debbie J u n i o r

Welcome to our New Member Class! JLSA’s new member class will consist of more than 150 women committed to serving and improving our local community. While these women represent different backgrounds, different career paths and different areas of our community, they have one thing in common - they’ve already made a big commitment to volunteer and serve and to combine their efforts in making San Antonio a better place. While they spent some time becoming acquainted with each other and with the Junior League at the new member reception, their next time to gather together is Super Saturday. They’ll meet with their mentors and League leadership to get to know one another, to become familiar with JLSA’s purpose, and to tour community partner facilities, such as Goodwill and the Children’s Bereavement Center. As the year goes on, they’ll have the opportunity to get to know JLSA, volunteer at community events, serve at League fundraisers, and make their own mark on San Antonio though their New Member Project. We’re excited to see the impact these new members will make on our community! Welcome!
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” -John Quincy Adams Have you ever had a great idea? Ever wanted to share your love of JLSA with others? Ever wished you could develop a new skill, add to your resumé, or broaden your horizons? If you said “yes” to any of those questions, you could be a great leader for JLSA! And, if you know anyone who might say yes to those questions, she might be a great leader for JLSA. Your Nominating Committee will soon be hard at work, trying to find the best women to fill positions throughout the League. They will soon begin meeting to prepare a slate of outstanding leaders to fill positions on our Board. These leaders will be voted on by the membership in December to fill positions for next year. If you know a JLSA woman who would make a wonderful Board member, please contact us and share her name. And, if you are interested in serving on the Board, it’s appropriate, and very appreciated, if you nominate yourself for a Board position. If you think you have the time and talents, or if you’re just interested in learning more about whether you might fit in one of the Board roles, don’t hesitate to speak up! So, how do you nominate yourself or someone else? Nomination applications can be found at www.jlsa.org under Resources/Forms/Nominating. If you have questions regarding nominations, please contact the 2013-14 Nominating Chair, Jill Peavy (jill.peavy@gmail.com).

Your 2012-13 Scrawls team The Scrawls staff has been honored to bring you updates and featured stories on a variety of League activities and placements throughout the year. From the inaugural Resolve for a Better SA 5k to the sustainer-donated Bright Shawl sign to Family Endeavors and Prevent Blindness Texas. We’ve even experienced a couple Scrawls “firsts” – the October joint issue with Holiday Olé Market and November’s electronically distributed issue. And I, Emily Gary, as your Print Publications Manager/Editor, have learned so much about the widereaching impact of our League in San Antonio. All of this has been possible thanks to a tremendous staff of writers, layout editor Callie Latham, and our amazing leader Erica Ellis, Communications Council Chair. Let me introduce you to our writers. Meg Dreiss has always enjoyed writing, and even contributed to Bazaar Magazine while living in Kuwait. Writing for Scrawls has given her the opportunity to learn so much about what the League does to help the community. Meg’s passion for preserving our natural environment truly came through in her article on Green Spaces Alliance. Although she has seen parts of the world some of us never will, hiking Machu Picchu is on her bucket list. Natalie Tate has enjoyed connecting with her fellow JLSA members through the interviews she has conducted. Her career in public relations has given her the tools to build interesting stories; such as her feature on Sunshine Singers and numerous member spotlights. Natalie’s continued involvement in the League is in part to honor the memory of her mother-in-law, who passed away W o m e n
B u i l d i n g
in September and was a member of the Junior League of Fort Worth. Katie Micken has made many amazing friends through her involvement in JLSA since 2007. Writing for Scrawls has given her the opportunity to get to know even more members and learn about several placements the League offers, particularly through her article on Clarity Child Guidance Center. Katie is also a world traveler. She is anticipating her excursion this summer to Iceland, having just returned from a December trip to Uruguay.
Meg Dreiss, writer
Shana Gurwitz kicked off our first issue of Scrawls with a review of Reading Camp’s success. Her experience as an English teacher came in handy with writing, but getting to know the diversity of League members made for a truly memorable experience. Although no longer a regular on karaoke night, Shana always carries a song in her heart for her daughter and little one on the way.

These women put so much time and effort into making each issue a joy to read. It’s because of them that you find yourself running to the mailbox in anticipation of your next Scrawls issue. Shana Gurwitz, writer

2013 Past President’s Luncheon Held on February 20, 2013, the annual Past President’s Luncheon hosted 26 former JLSA Presidents for a three-course meal in the Bright Shawl’s lovely Board Room. Current President, Debbie Callihan-Dingle gave the attendees an update of the 2012-2013 year, while President-Elect, Lisa Ebrom, informed the ladies of what was to come as she plans the 2013-2014 League year.
It has been a pleasure to volunteer as President Elect along the side of current President, Debbie Callahan-Dingle, and this year’s talented Board as we contributed to JLSA’s ongoing success and planned for the upcoming year to continue making a difference in San Antonio. I’m excited to work with the incoming leadership team and loved how everyone came together at this year’s leadership training. It is only with the time and talent that JLSA members give that ensures our success year after year. There is additional excitement for 2013—2014 because we are celebrating our 90th Anniversary and the dramatic impact that JLSA members have made in that time. We’ll do this by remembering our accomplishments and working to build on our legacy every day. The year will go by quickly, and I hope you’ll join me as I do my best to appreciate every moment!

Debbie Callihan-Dingle enjoyed “being in a room with so many accomplished ladies.” The most senior of whom was JLSA president during the 1956–1957 League year, Amanda Ochse. Assistant to the President, Sakkara Biggs, who was also in attendance, noted that these ladies “care about the JLSA. It’s inspiring to know that the past presidents are actively involved in a wide variety of community projects, and often hold major leadership roles within organizations that impact San Antonio.” For Callihan-Dingle, the event gave her pause to reflect on the past year. She says she has enjoyed “getting to meet so many of our Junior League members and being able to represent the League out and about in the community.” The event was a great opportunity for leaders past and present to share and reminisce on their experiences while bonding over their mutual love for the Junior League of San Antonio.

The Bright Shawl is thrilled to welcome Chef Albert Trujillo to the kitchen! After graduating from Texas Culinary Academy of Le Cordon Bleu in Austin in 2008, Chef Albert has worked with a long list of prestigious chefs, including the chefs of Cardilla Ranch, Omni la Mansion, Westin La Cantera, The Embassy Suites, and the Executive Chef of Sheraton Seattle, as well as the sous-chef of the JW Marriott & the Executive Chef of the Contessa Hotel. When Chef Albert looked into working with JLSA, he fell in love with the Bright Shawl right away and knew that he was becoming part of something special. As he spent more time with the Junior League of San Antonio, he immediately recognized the “strength of women committed to helping other women, while helping to improve the community.” When not cooking for the Junior League, Chef Albert loves cooking for his family and friends, spending time with his family, going to the movies, working on cars, and taking care of his garden with his two 4-legged friends, Rocky & Jade.

spotlight on: sustainer Anne Ahlschwede transferred into JLSA upon moving to San Antonio in 2004. “I wanted to meet people with common interests and gain better understanding of San Antonio,” Ahlschwede explains. League meetings are a favorite activity, and her leisure time revolves around entertaining, travel, gardening, and exercise. She feels that experiences in the League are largely what members make of them, “You get out what you put into it.” Anne suggests taking placements out of your comfort zone. In her case, serving as Treasurer was “a stretching placement…[I] got the most out of placements I put the most into.”
spotlight on: membership For six-year member Jennifer Dewar, League value comes from giving back to San Antonio, maintaining and making new friendships, and opportunities to socialize. “Every year gets better, [and] I’ve gained professional skills,” shares Dewar of her placement experiences. She fondly recalls serving for Clarity Guidance Center, and the “way kids’ faces light up because [we] want to spend time with them.” Jennifer feels “blessed and humbled” by the amazing women she’s encountered in the League, citing Debbie Callaghan-Dingle and Amy Dunn-Smith as personal mentors. Her advice? “It can take awhile to find your rhythm in the League; remember, you are here for a reason, and we are happy to have you!”
spotlight on: new member Joy McGaugh spent her formative years watching her mother devote large amounts of time to the Junior League of Corpus Christi. Between volunteering with her mom and having a JLSA member who is a close friend, Joy decided that this year she would follow in their footsteps. Joy describes her New Member year as “inspiring,” because of the “volunteer opportunities and the exposure to so many community partners,” and learning “a lot more about the city of San Antonio and how there is a very large network of people working hard to make it a better place for all its residents.” She looks forward to her first Active year in her new position as the Special Events Committee Chair, wherein she will plan some “smaller-scale fundraisers” and take on the challenge of “planning and executing the Resolve for a Better SA 5K.” We look forward to seeing Joy in action in the years to come!

meet the board: board member spotlight Ariana Barbour Ariana Barbour has been busy wrapping up her year as Community Council Chair on the JLSA Board this year as she transitions into her next role as Assistant to The President for the 2013-2014 year. After five years in the Junior League, Ariana knows what a commitment and what a reward the League is! In the last years, Ariana has held the position of Co-Chair for Family Endeavors for two years, and in addition to her role on the board this year, she also found time to share her talents with the planning committee of the inaugural Resolve For a Better SA 5K. In doing so, Ariana discovered a new hobby – running! She also enjoys reading, watching “bad” television, traveling with her husband of five years, and staying active on every social media site you can think of! Not surprisingly, some of Ariana’s favorite League activities are the ones where she gets to interact with other League members – General Meetings, Book Club, Running Club, and Community Organizations. In addition to all she does for the Junior League of San Antonio, Ariana also works full time as an Account Executive with Anderson Marketing Group. She and her husband currently have a houseful of “children” consisting of two cats (Turtle and Timmy) and one dog (Wookie! – exclamation point included). Ariana has certainly contributed a lot to JLSA, and in her words, “it takes patience, but legacies like those of the JLSA don’t happen overnight.” Many thanks to Ariana for your dedication and for being such an integral part of the League for so many years!!
members: making impact When we think of our leaders, peers, and friends in the JLSA, we often think of driven, charitable women, who, despite busy family and work lives, make every attempt to impact our community for the better. One woman who embodies this description is Shannyn Romero, who currently chairs the Green Spaces Alliance committee. A member since 2009, Shannyn jumped in with both feet her first active year and took on a leadership position as Reading Camp Chair. When asked why she joined the JLSA, she says it was “a natural thing for [her] to do,” since she was raised in a family that “stressed the importance of community service.” Shannyn, whose mother was a member of JL Huntsville, notes that she “truly believes in the JLSA mission” and feels that “JLSA’s purpose is just as important and current as it was 90 years ago.” Between her day job as a data manager for an elected official, this wife and mother of two is on the Northwood PTA Silent Auction Committee for the school fundraiser, and also holds positions on the Research and Communications committees of the Food Policy Council of San Antonio. Whew... All in all, Shannyn feels that her impact on JLSA has been her “continued enthusiasm for community and all community projects,” while noting that JLSA has brought her a greater awareness of and an insight into the needs within our community.
