Marie Smith, Member Since 1976 “Remembers spending a year researching a new fundraiser as several were discontinued. They decided to go with a gift market and called it Ole.”

The Holiday Ole Marketplace is also celebrating a milestone this year; this is the 20th Anniversary of this signature fundraiser. We are excited to expand it this year in a new location, the Freeman Exposition Hall. I hope members and guests alike will enjoy the market; there are festivities to match every interest as you can see in the Ole Insert. Your participation in events enables the JLSA to continue community works.

I ask you to Make This a Year Worth Repeating by joining in JLSA activities. We continue to build our legacy every day with an appreciation of our history, knowing that what we do day by day builds our future. It is wonderful to learn about experiences that have shaped the city and changed lives. Whether you are a member, sponsor, or partner, I appreciate your continued support and look forward to the coming year.

JLSA DID THAT! LITERACY SAN ANTONIO The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. was an organizing force behind LITERACY San Antonio; what began as a simple idea in 2005 has since turned into a way of life. The original project centralized information about literacy agencies and their programs, prepared literacy events in the community and provided ways everyone could get involved or get access to participate. The project concentrated on three main organizing principles. ADVOCATING for literacy programs, raising AWARENESS about the breadth of the problem, and taking ACTION and urging others to do so. The Junior League of San Antonio envisioned all residents of San Antonio collaborating and using the LITERACY San Antonio resources for advancing literacy. With help from our supporters LITERACY San Antonio now operates as an independent non-profit organization that is committed to significantly and permanently raising literacy and educational attainment in Greater Bexar County through 100% community engagement. They are committed to pioneering a collaborative approach to solve the problem of limited literacy in our city. Literacy SA has also created a new campaign called SAReads, which is dedicated to making grade-level reading a reality for all students in Bexar County.

BRACKENRIDGE PARK

J u n i o r

In 2005 in collaboration with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. supported the construction of state-of-the-art walking paths in Brackenridge Park. The Junior League provided a $20,000 financial donation and volunteer support in the development of the trailhead signs for the Brackenridge Park renovation. In addition to financial support, Junior League of San Antonio volunteers assisted with landscaping around the walking path as well. This project revitalized a San Antonio landmark, as well as fulfilled a commitment by the Junior League’s membership to provide a safe and centralized location for women and families to walk to better health. We believe the renovation of this city landmark provided San Antonians with a premier exercise location that is functional as well as beautiful. The Junior League still supports the cities efforts.

JLSA DID THAT!

The Junior League of San Antonio can be recognized for its service to children, even as far back as the 1940s. It is during this era when JLSA helped establish the Sunshine Cottage. In the early 1940s Mr. John White and Mrs. Dela White birthed a child named Tuletta White. Tuletta was born with significant hearing loss. Mrs. White, a member of the San Antonio Junior League, turned to her fellow league members and asked for help. JLSA came to her aid, and donated $4,500 (which would calculate to $52,213 in today’s economy) for a new school for children just like Tuletta. Not only did the League donate this amazing amount of money, they donated volunteers as well. Mrs. White worked hard to get a small house donated for the school to be housed in. Once she found its location, JLSA and other volunteers around San Antonio, worked together to paint and remodel the building that was granted. Bright yellow paint was donated from a local paint shop. Since the building looked yellow like sunshine, the name, The Sunshine Cottage, quickly stuck. The school is now accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, OPTIONSchools International, and is a Texas Education Agency Approved non-public school.

Students at Sunshine Cottage 1944

For 53 years, the Junior League of San Antonio hosted the Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Southwest Region Auditions. In 1959, long standing JLSA member Mag Tobin was also serving on the advisory and managing board of the Metropolitan Opera and was a founding member of the Metropolitan Opera National Council. Mrs. Tobin was able to help San Antonio to be selected as the host city for the MONC Southwest Region Auditions. JLSA members volunteered their time serving as hostesses and production assistants to create a welcoming environment for audition participants and judges alike. Throughout the years San Antonio hosted the MONC Southwest Region Auditions, over 2,000 singers had the opportunity to make their dreams a reality, with 35 national finalists. JLSA is so proud to have worked with MONC for over 53 years, making it one of the longest standing community placements held to date.

COMMUNITY PARTNER HIGHLIGHT

Clarity Child Guidance Center (CGC)-A nonprofit treatment center providing a full continuum of mental health care to children ages 3-17 in San Antonio and South Texas. Clarity Child Guidance provides compassionate mental health care. They have the region’s largest staff of children’s mental health professionals at their two family-friendly campuses and several satellite locations. JLSA volunteers assist the team at Clarity CGC by reading to children, leading art projects, and participating in other fun activities.

One in Five Minds One in five young people in the U.S. experience a mental, emotional, or behavioral health disorder such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic disorders, ADHD, bipolar and other serious problems. In Bexar County alone, there are an estimated 80,000 children affected by mental health. That is a staggering statistic! For this reason, Clarity Child Guidance Center is launching “One in Five Minds”, a campaign to reduce the stigma surrounding children’s mental health disorders and increase access to treatment. As a United Way agency, Clarity CGC provides greatly needed mental health care for children who could not otherwise afford to receive treatment.

Family Endeavors, Inc. is a long-standing non-profit agency that provides an array of programs and services in support of children, families, Veterans and those struggling with mental illness and other significant disabilities. The Mission of Family Endeavors is to provide comprehensive, effective, and innovative services that empower people to build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities. We believe in their capacity to grow, to heal, to change, to succeed and to affect those around them for the better. Family Endeavors unifies families torn apart by poverty, unemployment or neglect. Programs provide real, practical solutions and a path to earned income. Families receive counseling, crisis intervention, case management, homeless prevention services, parent training, practical life skills, and vocational support, training and employment. The Junior League is thrilled to support Family Endeavors, Inc. in accomplishing their goals each year and is proud to call them one of our community partners.

PRESIDENT’S VIEW NEWS

MEMBERSHIP Being a part of Junior League is about more than an opportunity to meet others or become involved in the San Antonio community. Not to be confused as a sorority or a social club, Junior League is a community of women that invests in its members and empowers them to positively impact the community. Membership in Junior League provides leadership training. Being a part of Junior League gives women the opportunity to meet other women interested in improving the world. Junior Leagues equips members to make a difference in their families, workplaces, and greater community. Each year the members of Junior League give back to the San Antonio community through both volunteer hours and monetary grants to community partners.

• JLSA has a membership of 1,222 women including sustainers. • 155,000 members worldwide. • San Antonio is one of 293 Junior League communities worldwide throughout the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico. If you are interested in joining the junior league in joining email: admissions@jlsa.org Prospective member meetings begin October 8, 2013.
