President’s Message Lisa Ebrom

President 2013-2014

We are at the midpoint of the Junior League of San Antonio’s 90th year.

How appropriate that it comes close to the holidays when we take time to be grateful for the blessings in our lives. As I reflect on the last few months I am grateful for friendships and proud of what our members have been able to accomplish. Our community placements are in full swing. You will read about a couple of them in this issue - Prevent and Green Space Alliances. In late October, we had an Active Reunion Project. Members who have been in the league for the last 3 to 5 years joined together at two Food Bank Mobile Pantries to distribute food to 290 area families. We have been making plans for the Goodwill Rummage Around Sale will be on the 4th Saturday in February. Please donate your gently used goods to any Goodwill agency and report the donation on the website or office.

Membership Development Council continues to find the right balance between making sure members have everything they need to enjoy the current year while planning for the next. Breakfast with Santa is right around the corner on December 7th. Placement is working with members and refining job descriptions. We are taking applications for the 2014 – 15 New Member class and are appreciative of members sponsoring talented women candidates.

Hopefully you were able to join us for Ole Marketplace. I appreciate everyone who came to shop, our volunteers, and fabulous merchants who made the event a success. Fete du Cuvee events have started as you can see inside they will continue and culminate with the event on March 1st. OLe 20th Annual Holiday Ole Market

The 20th Annual Holiday Ole Market was a success in the new location at the Exposition Hall at the Freeman Coliseum. The new space allowed for additional vendors and parking space for shoppers.

This year over 136 Merchants were involved in the four day shopping event, with five additional special events.

Over 3,000 tickets were sold to the special events, in addition to the general shopping passes sold. Net proceeds from Holiday Ole Market benefit the community programs and projects of The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., with this year’s Holiday Ole Market raising over $225,000!

The week of special events kicked off with the Annual Sneak Peak Preview Party on Wednesday evening. Guests were given a first look at the fabulous merchants will enjoying live jazz music and nibbles and drinks.

The first full day of shopping on Thursday started with Ready, Set, Shop, a morning brunch and private shopping.

Local chef, restaurateur, and cook book author Diana Barrios-Trevino that you may know from Los Barrios, La Hacienda, Viola’s Ventanas restaurants, served as the key note speaker sharing about her experiences in the restaurant business, being selected as a participant in the Food Network’s Throwdown! with Bobby Flay contest, and her claim to fame the shredded chicken puffy taco.

The fun continued on Thursday night with Pretty in Pink: Girls Night Out! Girlfriends enjoyed a night on the town with fun music and dancing, specialty cocktails, delicious food, and private shopping at the exhibit hall.

OLE!

This year the Holiday Ole Market debuted an event especially for tween girls – Starstruck: A Red Carpet Event. The event included a fashion show with local tweenage girls showing off the must have looks of the season.

The evening ended with a musical performance from San Antonio’s own Reed Deming, a 14year old singer/musician made the Top 24 on The X Factor out of thousands, and was in the Top 6 in the Teens Category on Britney Spears’ team.

Saturday’s shopping started with a special Pajamas and Pancakes breakfast for the whole family to enjoy. Kids of all ages enjoyed breakfast and listening to author Jennifer Gaines Drez reading her book Goodnight San Antonio.

Families also enjoyed other activities including Painting with a Twist, experiments with the San Antonio Children’s Museum, and JLSA Kids in the Kitchen and much more!

The 2013 Holiday Ole Market toasted 20 years of success of raising funds to support community programs and partners!

COmmunity partner Spotlight

Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas is a local environmental organization in San Antonio, Texas. As non-profit organization, they are dedicated to sustaining our natural environment and enhancing urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement, and education.

Green Spaces serves the community by keeping South Texas green and educating the public about the importance of our environment. With the help of board, members, staff, and corporate and community volunteers, Green Spaces preserves large parcels of land to protect the Edwards Aquifer, San Antonio’s main source for drinking water, fosters community gardens throughout San Antonio, with focus in low-income communities.

Green Spaces Alliance has one mission: To sustain the natural environment and enhance urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement and education.

The Junior League members volunteer their time on several projects through SA works shifts to help Green Space Alliance meet their goals.

we did that! walking for women’s health

The Junior League of San Antonio began their focus on Women’s Health with the 2004-2005 Signature Project, Walking for Women’s Health. The project focused on increasing the number of women leading physically active lives and worked to improve our city’s infrastructure through support of construction of walking paths at Brackenridge Park.

In further support of this Signature Project, the league partnered with The Health Collaborative’s Fit City Initiative in 2002. The Junior League was a leading sponsor of their Walk San Antonio Program, a free health and wellness program focused on encouraging regular exercise. This program grew from 4,500 participants at kick-off in 2003 to over 11,000 participants by 2005. In addition to financial support, the league contributed volunteer hours to help promote and maintain the Walk San Antonio Program.

Team Walk San Antonio was designed as a Junior League Community Placement. Volunteers for this placement provided support through assisting with program enrollment, locating walking groups, and providing encouragement through review of Individual Exercise Logs and conducting free monthly BMI (Body Mass Index) readings to monitor walker’s progress.

A Blast From the Past In January 1924 we pleged to create a Children’s Free Clinic to be held in the basement of the First Presbyterian

Church. By June 1924, Our Clinic Committee was fully equipped and members served in every capacity: clerks to Doctor’s assistants. We even started a motor corps to bring patients to the clinic or to bring our services to them if they were too sick to come to us. By 1925 we had 12 Doctors ranging from Pediatrics to Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat to Surgeons.

The clinic was financed by them initially, we simply ran it. Our main focus was the founding of a Children’s hospital. By administering the clinic under First Presbyterian we received a great deal of training that was beneficial later when we ran it fully on our own. In 1930, we undertook complete financing of the Children’s Free Clinic and in 1933 we moved to 310 E Market Street-which is now Hemisfare park. We closed the Children’s Free Clinic after 18 wonderful years of service.

community outreach San Antonio Food Bank Mobile Pantry Active Member Project

JLSA actives joined forces with the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) on October 26 to distribute groceries to families in need. The Mobile Pantry began during the summer of 2009 and has distributed more than 1.6 million pounds of groceries and food items to over 37,000 individuals. The Mobile Pantry runs daily Monday through Friday and on select weekends throughout the 16 service areas.

JLSA teamed up with the SAFB for the 2013-2014 Active Member Project. The project was developed as a result of a retention survey completed two years ago. We, as a league, noticed we started to lose members going into years four and five and very few members celebrated ten years anymore.

The project aimed at rekindling the enthusiasm actives one had during their New Member year. During the event, thirty six volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty assisting at the Mobile Pantry locations in Converse and San Antonio. Families lined up their cars early, eagerly awaiting their turn to collect their groceries.

JLSA Volunteers assisted with everything from loading bags of onions, boxing bundles of bananas, and helping families load up their vehicles with their goods. Volunteers at the two locations served a total of 290 families in less than two hours.

The Mobile Pantry provides hungry individuals access to a greater array of fresh, nutritious and healthy products. The SAFB depends on organizations like the Junior League to staff these events. The events typically last two hours and can be run with as little as twelve volunteers. The Mobile Pantry also helps to connect individuals to other SAFB programs including Client Services (Federal Benefit Assistance) and Nutrition, Health and Wellness Education. JLSA hopes to continue to support this effort in future years and is excited to be part of this wonderful partnership.
