Our mission is timeless, our founders focused on developing potential of women, promoting voluntarism, and improving communities and that continues today. It is volunteers, sponsors, and partners like you making time for the Junior League day after day that make this possible. Thank you for your contribution. This month’s edition of Scrawls highlights good works that tie into our history. We are in the fifth year of partnership with Goodwill. COMMUNITY OUTREACH GOODWILL SAN ANTONIO
JLSA VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINAIRE
LYNN ZIEGLER 2014
The Junior League of San Antonio Volunteer Extraordinaire Award celebrates a woman of outstanding leadership who has used her talents and resources to improve our community while advancing the mission of the Junior League. Through advocacy, collaboration, direct service or community education, she embraces her community and makes a unique and significant difference as a leader. She is a current sustaining member of the Junior League of San Antonio.
Lynn feels that volunteer work is an absolute privilege and has found that the more one gives of oneself, the more that one receives in return. She loved her work with the Junior League of San Antonio and found it to be an excellent training ground for future volunteer positions, as well as a wonderful way of meeting people and making new friends. Her leadership positions in the league included Bright Shawl Assistant Chairman, Recording Secretary, Assistant Provisional Chairman, serving on Admissions as well as serving on Nominating Committee. Of course, waitressing and rummage were some of her favorites!
Goodwill San Antonio was founded in 1945 on the South Side of San Antonio. Since then, has expanded to serve the entire city and beyond, including New Braunfels, Seguin and Laredo. Dedicated to changing lives through the power of work, Goodwill assists nearly 50,000 San Antonio-area individuals facing employment barriers. Along with its retail stores and at least 25 donation stations, Goodwill operates several career centers in San Antonio and surrounding communities. The Junior League of San Antonio and Goodwill will once again join together to sponsor an annual Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22. This year will be the 90th Rummage Around Event and will include 8 stores, including the brand new Goodwill store at 1604 and Bulverde Rd. JLSA will volunteer over 480 hours just on event day alone. Last year the averages sales lift percentage for the Rummage weekend was 65% per store! Junior League of San Antonio members contribute a minimum of $75,000 in quota donations. Goodwill then will award the JLSA with gift cards that can be distributed to deserving community agencies. Our community partners then distribute the gift cards to appropriate recipients for use at any Goodwill Location. This year, JLSA has a goal to donate more than $75,000 of merchandise and turn those dollars into even more gift cards. Also new this year is the partnership with The Jewelry Store to donate more jewelry items to the Rummage Around Event. The Jewelry Store will repair jewelry if damaged, or reinvent gently used pieces of costume jewelry and then donate these items back to JLSA/Goodwill.
Lynn’s post-JLSA community activities have included her volunteer work with the Battle of Flowers Association (serving on the board as Vice President-Luncheon, Vice President-Parade, Vice President -Court and currently serving as Assistant Chair of the Band Festival), Charity Ball Association (serving as Vice President- Rotogravure, Vice President-Charities, Vice President-Decorations for the Chrysanthemum Ball, Vice President-Datebook), Alamo Heights United Methodist Church Thursday Lunch Bunch Coordinator, the Military Civilian Club serving on the board as 2nd and 4th Vice President, Alamo City Cancer Council (serving as Co-Chair for the Alamo City Breast Cancer Update and Golf Tournament) and Cancer Center Council. She also has assisted her husband as liaison for the Military Affairs Council of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce to eleven different Air Force and Army Commanding Generals for the last 21 years. Since her diagnosis of breast cancer 15 years ago Lynn became actively involved with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, participating on the board and chairing the 2004 Race for the Cure with her husband, Thad, as well as chairing Saks Fifth Avenue’s “Key to the Cure” event for three consecutive years. Lynn and her husband, Thad, have 3 children. Thad C. is married to Anna and they have 2 children, Thad (3) and Elaine (9 months). Will is married to Valerie and they have two daughters, Hallie (4) and Vivienne (2). Barbara is married to Max Schenker. Lynn loves spending her time with family and precious grandchildren.
Volunteer Extraordinaire
In addition to JLSA members’ donations, Rummage Around volunteers will be shopping the stores to pull more Julia’s Attic items for the sale, assisting with greeting customers, bagging purchases, assisting customers with merchandise, keeping dressing rooms clear and staffing tables for drawings and notifying the winners.

SA Works are volunteer shifts that take place throughout the San Antonio community during the year. The purpose of members participating in SA Works is to give back to the community by volunteering to make homes, lives, and other organizations better through a variety of ways. Here are a few featured SA Works Projects from Fall 2013. CHALK IT UP! Annually each year, an area of downtown starting at Houston Street going down Main Avenue to South Presa, starts as a blank canvas of sidewalk and asphalt and ends as a woven chalk tapestry after the Chalk it Up! Event by ArtPace. Chalk it Up is an event that promotes the value of art education and the wealth of San Antonio’s creative resources through free activities led by professional art educators and contemporary artists. The community comes together to create a masterpiece of art and creativity through the opportunity to interact with the diversity of the city. Junior League members volunteered with check in, projects at craft stations, and clean up from the event.
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The organization funds blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services for patients and their families. Multiple times throughout the year, Junior League members contribute volunteer hours to support the administrative needs of this community organization. Through the help of tasks such as envelope stuffing, writing letters, and helping with event set up and check in, Junior League volunteers are helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to achieve their mission and further their impact on our local community. Some of the events Junior League members have volunteered at this year are the City Wide Kick-Off, school fundraiser program, Light the Night, and Walk Nights.

WE DID THAT! SUMMER READING CAMP
Austin Boxer BOOgie The Annual “Boxer BOOgie” is a run/walk for people and their dogs to raise funds to support rescuing Boxer Dogs in the San Antonio area. This annual October event includes fund costume contests and trick or treating for both animal and human participants. Junior League volunteers played a crucial role in the day’s event by assisting with check in, providing water and directing runners along the course, and helping to set up and take down the event.
For the past 7 years the JLSA has organized a Summer Reading Camp for children around San Antonio. According to Emily Countryman, “Reading Camp bridges the summer learning gap. Many students lose up to half or a full school year worth of reading skills over the summer because of lack of exposure and books at home.” But, their goal is also to have fun. The volunteers prepare lessons that are not just educational but also engaging to keep learning fun and the students motivated. At the end of the program students are sent home with six books for summer reading, so that the learning can continue. JLSA will continue this program next summer in June.
A Blast From the Past
San Antonio Eye Bank The San Antonio Eye Bank is dedicated to achieving the donation of eye and corneal tissues for those in need of transplants and to providing a sense of purpose and comfort to the families they serve. In celebration of Dia de los Muertos, the San Antonio Eye Bank hosted a Bridging Lives: Dia de los Muertos Altar and celebration at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. The festivities included an altar for the families to place a photo of their deceased loved one as well as showcase the donor memorial quilts. Junior League members were a part of helping families honor their loved ones and educating the community about the need for donated eye and cornea tissue.
During World War II War, the members of Junior League of San Antonio proudly did their part to help the war effort. Women of the organization dropped everything they were doing and focused their time on serving their country in any way they could. Women like Mrs. Amanda Ochse who was waitressing at the Bright Shawl and decided to become a volunteer at places like the Red Cross, British Relief, and the Aircraft Warning Service. Women like Mrs. Ochse began raising money, organizing food drives, and donating blood. By the end of the war, women of the league had raised over 1,000 canned goods for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation and donated $1,500 in care packages for the troops. This is equivalent to $17,404 today! The women did not stop there. They continued their support by establishing a blood bank and nursing organization at Robert B. Green Hospital. They also provided shelter by turning the patio of the Bright Shawl into temporary housing for soldiers stationed at San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. The efforts continue to be an inspiration to JLSA members.

In January of 1924, the Junior League of San Antonio was founded. For ninety years, members have changed San Antonio by what they have done and learned through the league. Our mission is timeless, our founders focused on developing potential of women, promoting voluntarism, and improving communities and that continues today. This month’s edition of Scrawls highlights good works that tie into our history. We are in the fifth year of partnership with Goodwill.
