ELMHURST PUBLIC LIBRARY 2015

ELMHURST PUBLIC LIBRARY SECOND FLOOR

Being well detailed as an existing condition made extending the current aesthetic essential to the renovation of the facitilty. Not only did materials need to match, but so too did the edging joints and reveal locations. Efforts were consistantly made to make this project appear as though no work had been done to the original design. The addition of a new teen room allowed a single opportunity for the design team to flex its muscles. A need for patron interaction was reflected in the contemporary material choices. Harking on lounge aesthetic, the room needed to be well crafted for activity while remaining cozy for users in a library setting.

Set in the context of an old church, the library has been renovated several times. Therefore efforts weren’t made to have the new design stand out. Instead, it was part of the practice to simply accentuate what was already existing; generating the greatest good with the least amount of effort. Removing much of the design from past renovations became the most effective method in design. Without a series of planters used to hide the staircase, the main entrance became more visually accessible. Coupled with minor material updates and new lighting, the luster of the library was returned to that of its heyday.

GLEN ELLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY 2015

The library was in dire need of an update to its youth department prompting a gut and renovation of the facility. Initial meetings focused on making the space visually secure without sacrificing the use of its space. Group separation and noise control were heavy driving forces. Therefore enclosed spaces were grouped to one side of the facility. The rest of the area was left for stacks and free play. New paint, flooring, and lighting brightened up the space far beyond expectations. Patronage to the facility has not only increased, but so has staff morale. It is exciting to know that the design has generated the exact effect that the entire team strove to create.

WINNETKA PUBLIC LIBRARY 2014 Turning an underutilized basement into a program haven, the scope of this project was extremely small, but had large consequences. The use of reclaimed and reusable materials offered the design a flexibility unseen at this facility; all to create a space to explore new products and test design opportunity.

HINSDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY 2014 A small library with a requirement for numerous activities, the design focused on flexibility. Allowing the program room the ability to open up entirely during unused hours gave staff more open space. However, the use of movable walls offered the privacy required for quiet reading programs. To ensure function wasn’t the only driving force, splashes of color were added to make the space more approachable for children.

INDIAN TRAILS PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT 2016

Designing a new addition to the existing library was not as simple as adding square footage and merging into the context. The existing envelope has a bipolar attitude generated from two conflicting design aesthetics. Two different brick finishes and two different curtain wall types, the new addition had its work cut out for it. To update the facility, efforts were made to enclose the earlier addition while extending the original design. Subtle material updates, with wood finishes and stone being carried from exterior to interior, offered a window into modern aesthetic; thus giving the addition/ renovation its own flair without turning a cold shoulder to the original design.
