Parsons The New School for Design, founded in 1896 by American painter William Merritt Chase, is the oldest college of art and design in the United States and a pioneer in the field of education. Today, as one of the largest degree-granting colleges of art and design, Parsons The New School for Design has a singular mission: to transform talented students into highly successful artists, designers

and business people, through new links with New York City’s top industry professionals. Under the subsequent leadership of Frank Alvah Parsons, the school expanded into Europe. In 1920, he launched an art and design school in Paris, situated at the Place des Vosges with 22 students. By 1927, 17 nationalities were represented among the 217 students, including Austrians, Swedes, Swiss, Russians and Australians. It was the first American art institution abroad to provide a formal full-time program in the visual arts. The school was closed during World War II then reopened first with a summer abroad program in the late 1970s and then in 1981, at its present location near the Eiffel Tower, with full-time BFA programs.

More than forty countries are represented in the Parsons Paris student population, bringing to this small community a cultural diversity rare among art education institutions. This, combined with a location at the crossroads of Europe, makes studying at Parsons Paris a uniquely rich experience for young artists and designers. An elected student government brings issues before the school administration, and organizes social events that consolidate this closelyknit community that serves as home base to so many of disparate origin. Student life is a blend of structured classes, studio time and extracurricular events including guest speakers, gallery openings, social gatherings and the discovery of the world beyond the walls of the school. During the term, excursions are organized to the nearby regions of Giverny or Champagne and beyond the borders of France to such cities such as Berlin, Geneva, London, Florence or Venice.

PARIS CAMPUS

While the larger campus is certainly Paris, with its museums and historical sites, the facilities of Parsons Paris are ideally suited for the creative endeavors proposed in the classroom. Sky–lit studios used for drawing, painting and sculpture surround a central courtyard. The photography studio, printmaking room, fashion atelier, and computer lab enable students to explore the limits of their creativity. An in–house gallery features exhibits by both professional artists and Parsons Paris students alike. Small classes, along with individual attention from faculty, provide an optimum environment for developing the discipline and skills required for the student’s artistic pursuit. While classes are taught in English, we encourage students to study French so that they can take full advantage of their time in Paris. LIBRARIES

STUDENT LIFE OFFICE

The Student Life Office helps students navigate the many aspects of life as temporary residents and lends a hand as they discover their new environment. Student Life organizes an orientation program that provides a week–long introduction to the French capital as well as an opportunity to meet fellow classmates, the faculty and staff who form the school community. Student Life staff help students obtain residence permits (cartes de séjour) and advise on such practical matters as banking, telephone and transportation systems, insurance and medical referrals. Student Life provides organizational support for the student government, on-campus internship program, social, cultural and special events. Counseling on any personal concerns arising during the school term is available on a confidential basis.

Parsons Paris students have access to The American University of Paris library that houses over 70,000 volumes of books, 1,000 journals, and over 13,000 periodical titles, which are available in print or electronic format. The AUP library is open 60 hours per week, and is equipped with wireless capabilities, enabling students the freedom and flexibility required for research today. Additionally, Parsons Paris students have access to the American Library of Paris, which houses CD-ROM indexes and a periodicals collection of 450 titles (some dating back to the 19th century). Over 350 current periodicals are available, ranging from weekly and monthly magazines on entertainment, the arts, and lifestyle issues, to specialty publications focusing on specific areas of business, politics, and education.

HOUSING

Students live in apartments throughout the city. Parsons Paris has no dormitories of its own. The experience of life in the French community helps avoid isolating students within a closed English–speaking environment. As part of an ongoing process, the Student Life Office is involved in locating apartments suitable for students as well as developing and maintaining contacts with various rental agencies. Students receive assistance and documentation on effectively dealing with the legal aspects of renting in France. STUDY ABROAD OPTIONS

In addition to studying with peers from all over the world, students enrolled in the full-time BFA and BBA programs at Parsons Paris have the opportunity to study in either New York or London through our Study Abroad option during their junior year. In order to participate, students must be in good academic standing and apply during the spring semester of their sophomore year. Students are not permitted to spend their fourth and final year on exchange. Due to the Parsons Paris residency requirement, students who have transferred to Parsons Paris at the junior level may not participate in this program. Study Abroad destinations include: PO

Foundation is an intensive, first–year program for BFA candidates. The transdisciplinary curriculum emphasizes drawing, process and creative problem–solving as fundamental to all artistic fields; while selective projects, site–visits, guest lecturers and critics help define the differences between art and design specializations. Students have the flexibility to choose a specific art concentration after a formal exploration of the many options available in art and design. Integrated courses in liberal studies provide the means to build critical awareness, knowledge of art history and communication skills. Foundation offers a uniquely challenging educational environment in which experience of the local culture is an integral part of the learning process. Students develop the visual thinking, practical skills and individual discipline required for future study in the visual arts. ENTERING THE FOUNDATION PROGRAM

Fall Entry Secondary school students or transfer students who have not completed a foundation year should apply for the first-year Foundation Program. The academic year routinely starts at the beginning of September. Spring Entry The Accelerated Foundation program that commences in the spring semester is a full foundation program: the first semester runs from January to mid-May and the second semester starts one week later and runs to the end of July. The curriculum is the same as fall entry Foundation but is more intense as it is completed in a shorter period of time. Upon successful completion of the Accelerated Foundation program students commence the sophomore year in the subsequent fall semester. Students may apply to transfer into the second semester of the Foundation sequence if they have taken equivalent coursework elsewhere. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to decide into which of the Foundation sequences the student may enter based on a student's portfolio and transcripts.

Communication designers give form to information in advertising, publishing and editorial design, corporate and exhibition design, websites, multimedia, environmental graphics, signs and maps, film and video. In all these fields, the need to clearly and succinctly inform, entertain and persuade remains a critical concern. Studying communication design in Paris is a great opportunity to experience firsthand a new cultural perspective. For Communication Design majors, Paris also offers a world capital teeming with professional opportunities and a large community comprised of many of today’s best known graphic designers. At Parsons Paris, the comprehensive curriculum establishes a solid foundation in visual form and design principles, as well as addressing the methodologies and issues behind contemporary graphic design. Visits to Parisian art and design institutions like the Pompidou Center, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the Palais de Tokyo provide a wealth of opportunities to view European graphic design history up to the latest trends.

The art and business of fashion give form and function to clothing, a basic human need, imbuing it with meaning in the ever-evolving language of style. The core of Parsons Paris’ curriculum is the designer critic program that emulates the workings of a professional design studio from conceptual drawing and pattern-making to the selection of colors, fabrics and the construction of finished garments. During three years of studio work, students acquire an understanding of tools, materials, construction techniques and textile design methods, enabling them to express their individual creative visions. Intensive concept and design courses, weekly critiques, working with industry professionals and the study of the Parisian prêt-à-porter helps students develop originality and acquire understanding of the marketplace. Beyond the school atelier, exposure to textile trade fairs, designer shows and museum exhibitions all foster a keen understanding of the European marketplace. Visiting critics help the students to understand design requirements and limitations of the various markets while company driven projects provide students with real world challenges faced in the business of style. Senior year culminates with the designer critic project in the first semester and the construction of a capsule collection in the second semester, all of which is presented in an annual fashion show attended by fashion professionals and the international press.

Toulouse Lautrec glorified the wilder Parisian nightlife. Degas captured the city’s intimate moments and elegant pastimes. A fractured Eiffel Tower became Delaunay’s modernistic ode to a classic Paris icon. As witness to an ever evolving art scene, Christo’s Pont Neuf, wrapped and knotted with high–tech material, became a literal bridge between past and present forms, while the striped columns of Daniel Buren create a palpable tension contrasted against the classic beauty of their setting at Palais Royal. With Paris as a backdrop, the department of Fine Arts helps students develop artistic craft and encourages personal growth. The curriculum is highly structured and involves rigorous instruction in techniques and materials. While painting and sculpture are the main disciplines of the program, students study drawing, printmaking and also have the opportunity to take electives, such as digital imaging, photography and animation to enrich their skills in communication and expression. Through courses in art history and liberal studies, class critique/discussions and exposure to rich European artistic and cultural resources, students broaden and deepen both intellectual and technical skills. Students learn to utilize color, form, space and composition and are encouraged to develop individual directions of inquiry. Interaction with faculty who work and exhibit as professional fine artists, as well as guest international artists, give the students a rich background of exposure to the world of art.

For the illustration student, Paris provides a rich, historical and contemporary tapestry from which to draw one’s inspiration. Moving in tandem with the great movements in art history, from the illuminated manuscripts, the great affichistes of the 1910’s, 20’s, and 30’s to les bandes dessinées and graphic novels, illustration has played and continues to play a dynamic role in European and world communication and graphic provocation. The works of Daumier, Doré, Cassandre, Topor, Sempé, Lagarrigue, Tardi, Loustal, Moebius, Benoit and JP Delhomme are part of the daily Parisian landscape. Students learn to solve current and topical conceptual illustration problems in a city that is a living textbook. The collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Musée de la Publicité, Bibliothèque Forney, Forum des Images, and the Centre Pompidou are part of this fabric. Both traditional and digital technologies are explored thoroughly in this pursuit. Drawing on the wealth of Paris’ cinematic tradition, the student also learns to take the drawn image into space and time through work in 2D and 3D animation work. Straddling the past and future, fine arts and commerce, the illustrator will find this both a rewarding and unique experience.

Since the birth of photography in Paris in 1839, the French capital has played a pivotal role in nurturing this modern art form. In addition to the classic works of Atget, Brassai, Doisneau, and Cartier-Bresson, the works of Robert Capa, and William Klein come to mind in the context of photography and Paris. The works of these photographers are studied in reference to Paris. In addition, the documentary styles of Robert Franck, Walker Evans, Gary Winogrand and a contemporary generation including Sophie Calle, Gregory Crewdson, Joel Sternfeld, and Andreas Gursky are also explored. Within this broad aesthetic context, students develop their personal vision using traditional, alternative and contemporary photographic techniques including 35mm, 6x6, 4x5, pinhole and digital. Studio work is evaluated through individual and group critiques. The collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale, the Musée Carnavalet, the Centre National de la Photographie, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou, as well as those of local working photographers, serve to illustrate the rich span of photographic history.

design & management

The close interaction we have with the BFA students helps to hone our sense of design. And the fact that our professors are working professionals gives us a head start in our respective fields.

31

32

In this program students are simultaneously introduced to the management of design, the practice of design and the social role of design. They address the pre-eminent role design plays in contemporary consumer society through a hands-on approach that requires them to engage in the production of design, and through courses that address the complexity of managing that production. They are introduced to design’s multifaceted nature by being asked to explore, with the faculty, how they can manage design in order to create new value for business and society at large. They acquire the fundamentals of design and management in order to be able to identify and manage design that is functional, ergonomic, aesthetic and sustainable.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Students interested in pursuing a career in design management enter directly into the Design & Management Program as freshmen. Entering freshmen must possess strong communication and analytical skills. No portfolio is required for entrance to this program. Students will receive a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, a recognized undergraduate degree within the business field, at completion of the four–year program in Paris. Faculty within the Design & Management program are professionals chosen for their expertise in their respective fields. While students learn about design and management in the classroom, they are also exposed to the professional world through guest speakers, company visits and field trips. Students may choose to specialize in European Design, Fashion Management, Communication & Advertising, and Design Marketing, or opt for a broader career approach.

THE CULTURE OF DESIGN TIMELINE This freshman year project develops an awareness of significant 20th century design milestones. The visual grid can be read vertically to show the decades' design ideals or horizontally to show the field's development, rendering a framework upon which to understand the social context of design.

35

The broadly interdisciplinary Liberal Studies curriculum provides students with critical-historical perspectives on art and culture, and the research, writing and presentation skills essential to a well–rounded approach to art and design. It permits them to situate contemporary visual culture within its wider geographical and historical contexts, to investigate a range of issues that impact cultural production, and to discover resonances with their own practice. The program consists of courses for the BFA and BBA degrees, which require 42 Liberal Studies credits, a minimum 12 of which must be in art history. “Survey of World Art & Design" in the first year of studies serves as a key initiation to the historical examination and critical analysis of art and design across ages and cultures. Students learn to look at, contextualize, and interpret images and artifacts. “Critical Reading & Writing” emphasizes creative thinking and writing as tools for personal expression. In addition to required courses, Art History and Liberal Studies electives focus on specific aspects of cultural production and its uses, and enable students to sharpen their own critical and theoretical points of view. Social Science courses consider the complexities of social change, cultural diversity, and human thought. Students learn to exercise reason, to analyze and organize, form convincing arguments, and to speak and write logically. Parsons Paris takes special advantage of its campus and location as the ideal environment for observing and exploring social and cultural difference. Visits to studios, museums, galleries and various cultural events expose students to historical and contemporary art and design achievements. Senior level seminars address timely and provocative issues that help students develop ideas and make critical choices that will enhance their own careers as artists and designers.

semester or year abroad at parsons paris

certificate programs

THE VISITING STUDENT PROGRAM

Parsons Paris offers an extraordinary study abroad option for college sophomores and juniors, or those with undergraduate degrees who wish to spend a semester or year experiencing the art, design, and culture of Paris. Not only do Visiting Students enjoy the many cultural outings and field trips in Paris and beyond, they gain exposure to many cultures through our international faculty and student body. Working side-by-side with Parsons Paris degree students, Visiting Students have access to all studio facilities. Studying full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester), Visiting Students choose classes from the Parsons Paris departmental offerings as well as classes specifically developed for the Visiting Student community. An individual’s program could include classes from any and all majors, upon final approval of the Department Heads involved. Visiting Students are not required to pick a specific major; instead they select either Studio Concentration or Non-Studio Concentration depending on what types of classes they wish to take at Parsons Paris. • Those intending on taking any art and design coursework must apply for the Studio Concentration. Studio Concentration applicants are evaluated for admission based on their portfolio, statement of intent including a list of courses desired (see our website for course offerings), and academic records. • Those who wish to take only Design and Management, Art History, and Liberal Studies classes apply for the Non-Studio Concentration. Non-Studio Concentration applicants are evaluated based on their statement of intent - including a list of courses desired (see our website for course offerings), and academic records. For both Studio Concentration and Non-Studio Concentration applicants the Admissions Committee will determine, from the materials submitted, an applicant’s suitability for the program and readiness to achieve in the courses he/she has requested to take.

STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM COME FROM NUMEROUS COLLEGES INCLUDING:

Bates College Brown University California College of Arts & Crafts City College Clark University Colby-Sawyer College

College of Visual Arts Colorado State University Columbia University Cornell University Georgetown University Hamilton College Maryland Institute College of Art Minneapolis College of Art & Design Oxford University Rhode Island School of Design Reed College Sage College of Albany Sarah Lawrence College

School of the Art Institute of Chicago School of Visual Arts Stanford University The University of the Arts University of California Los Angeles University of Massachusetts University of Michigan University of The Arts London Vassar College Virginia Commonwealth University Yale University

The intensive curriculum of the Parsons Paris Certificate Program offers a nondegree option for those who wish to launch a career transition, refine a professional level design portfolio, or prepare for entering an MFA program. The Certificate Programs are ideally suited for the mature student who already has an undergraduate degree and wishes to complete his/her education with a professional art and design concentration. These programs emphasize skill development and provide a solid foundation in the process, technology, and language of art and design. Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours in a single discipline for the one year Certificate Programs listed below. Certificate Students enjoy the many cultural outings and field trips in Paris and beyond and gain exposure to many cultures through our international faculty and student body. Working side-by-side with Parsons Paris degree students, Certificate Students have access to all studio facilities. Studying full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester), Certificate Students choose from the curricular suggestions on page 37 that provide a framework upon which Certificate Programs are developed. The student along with his/her advisor will create a final curriculum that responds to the student’s interests, abilities, and the course schedule. Certificate Student applicants are evaluated for admission based on their portfolio (with the exception of the Management of Design curriculum), statement of intent, and academic records. From the materials submitted the Admissions Committee will determine an applicant’s suitability for and readiness to achieve in the program.

degree programs Parsons Paris offers degree programs based on the American system of education, in which students who successfully complete four years of study receive a Bachelor's Degree. In the fields of art and design, students receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) that prepares them for entry into their profession. At Parsons Paris, students can choose Communication Design, Illustration, Fashion Design, Fine Arts or Photography. BFA candidates start in the Foundation Year, an intensive preparation for any of the art and design disciplines; Photography students have the option of “direct entry” into their major starting from freshman year. Students interested in pursuing a career in business for the design industries enter the Design & Management program as freshmen; upon successful completion of the four-year program these students receive a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree(BBA), the recognized undergraduate degree in business in the USA.

the degree. All students for whom English is their second language are required to take an English Placement Test during Orientation week; if their score is below our minimum, the ESL Program Required condition may be imposed. • Probation Students may be admitted on probation as a result of poor academic performance. Details about probationary admission are included in the decision letter.

The American Credit System Students earn “academic credit” for courses they successfully complete. Credit load is calculated based on the number of in-class hours and the amount of homework required. Credits are differentiated into: studio credits for classes that require the creation of artwork; departmental credits for courses that contain material relevant to a student's major; liberal studies / art history credit for classes emphasizing the development of critical, analytical, and writing skills. Liberal Studies comprise Art and Design History, Social Sciences, Cultural Studies, and English. In order to obtain the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) a student must complete 134 credits, including 92 departmental and 42 Liberal Studies credits. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) requires 134 credits, including 79 departmental, 13 studio, and 42 Liberal Studies credits. All degree students must take a minimum of 12 Art History credits within their Liberal Studies requirements.

Residency Requirement Parsons Paris has a two-year residency requirement for all undergraduate degree programs. Students may transfer up to a maximum of 67 credits.

Advanced Standing Credit Students who have earned a French or International Baccalaureate, a German Abitur, or who have passed A-Levels, US Advanced Placement Exams, or equivalent university qualifying examinations, will be considered to receive appropriate transfer credits for those academic credentials. Applicants must submit official documentation in the original language and certified translations into English in order to receive credit. Special Condition Admissions In some cases, after reviewing an application, the Admissions Committee may require one of the following conditions: • ESL Program Required Students whose English proficiency test scores fall between 60 and 91 on the TOEFL Ibt or 5.5 and 6 on the IELTS will be considered for entry with English as Second Language (ESL) required. Enrollment will be limited exclusively to the studio / departmental portion of the curriculum, plus ESL courses. The student must successfully complete the ESL class in order to continue at Parsons Paris. Liberal Studies requirements normally completed in the first year must be completed in subsequent semesters or during the summer and may extend the total time required to complete

Accepted Applicants When notified of acceptance, applicants receive information about housing, tuition and fees, and other matters. The Admissions Committee's decision to admit an applicant is contingent upon successful completion of any on going studies, and on the Admissions Committee's receipt of the final transcripts of those studies.

Transfer Student Issues Transfer applicants are evaluated on two criteria: first, their skills and abilities must be equivalent to those of Parsons Paris students at the same level; second, they must have sufficient credit for college courses completed elsewhere that are similar in content, purpose and standards to those offered at Parsons Paris. Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts of all college study to Parsons Paris. A grade of “C” or better must be earned to receive transfer credit. Granting of transfer credit is contingent upon an applicant's capacity to maintain the same satisfactory performance level by which the student was admitted. During the first semester of attendance, students should direct their questions about transfer credit to the Registrar. Students must submit final transcripts for all previous coursework prior to the second semester of matriculation. After that point, transcripts will not be reviewed. In addition, transcripts from colleges that were not indicated on the application for admission will not be reviewed. • Studio Credit Transfer credit for studio courses will be granted only for courses whose content is similar to that of Parsons Paris and after presentation of official transcripts and portfolio material demonstrating proficiency in the subject areas for which credit is sought. Credit will only be granted in 12 credit (equivalent semester) blocks. NO credit will be granted for “life experience.” • Liberal Studies Credit Parsons Paris awards a maximum of 42 liberal studies (including art history) credits for courses completed elsewhere, and which correspond to Liberal Studies requirements. • Notification of Credit The transfer credit evaluation is completed and transfers credit granted only after an applicant has been accepted and has submitted all final transcripts from other schools to Parsons Paris. Accepted applicants receive notification of transfer credit prior to Registration.

non-degree study options Certificate Program Upon successful completion of the 36 credits of required coursework, students have the option of participating in the graduation ceremony at which they will receive their Certificate. Upon request students will receive an official transcript. Visiting Student Program Visiting Students may attend full-time for one or two semesters, taking classes from any department for which they have the requisite experience. Visiting Students apply for either Studio Concentration or Non-Studio Concentration, depending on the type of classes they wish to take at Parsons Paris. Those intending on taking art and design coursework apply for the Studio Concentration, and those who wish to take Design & Management, Art History/Liberal Studies classes apply for Non-Studio Concentration. Upon request, students receive a transcript of the coursework they have completed at Parsons Paris.

Part-Time Programs • Non-Credit Classes Throughout the year non-credit classes are offered for students of all ages, from high school to mature learners. Visit www.parsons-paris.com to request a brochure. • Special Part-Time Qualified students may enroll in individual, credited courses on a space-available basis. Those interested in this option must contact Parsons Paris to receive course listings for the semester for which they would like to study. These are available approximately two months before the beginning of each semester.
