STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? Work with character and narrative through the use of comics. Merging elements of animation to see how the two applications can mix. My reasoning is that I wish to further practice storytelling, Its something I am currently trying to improve upon, as I wish to work in the area.

THEMES / SUBJECTS GENERAL THEMES: Death and acceptance The relationship between father and son, Father as a provider, and influence to the boy, and the son looking to gain the fathers pride. I wish to confront the western beliefs of death, as something to be sorrowful of and try to create a work that helps to take some of the sting from the experience, especially the idea of not living up to a parents expectation, when they more than likely didn’t exist in the first place.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Comics, Zines, Sequential narrative, Animation AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: Primarily my father, recently faced with the possibility of his dads death, (my grandfather) he was obsessive about the possibility that he hadn’t lived up to his dads expectations, I hope to express that this is a foolish and unhealthy mindset, offer a different way to look at the situation. In a more general sense, mid to late teens to adult, a western audience being the group that have the negative approach to dealing with death.

PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: A webcomic to be shared on sites like tumblr and the duck web comics and possibly made in to a video format for video sharing sites (vimeo, YouTube etc). Printed zines to be sold at conventions, events and taken to comic stores.
