Dear Parents - This week we are making links with our previous learning about the life cycle of a frog and learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Our text is Eric Carle's ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The following week we will be learning about Eric Carle as an author and illustrator, and using several of his other books, so no need for you to focus upon that this week. Just do what you can. If you cannot do anything on the slides remember simple things like asking your child to say the date on their calendar and by them hearing you use the language of time throughout the day e.g. before, after, morning, afternoon, evening, tomorrow, yesterday, today, in 20 minutes, in one hour and the o’clock times, is very valuable maths. It is great to see that more and more of you are being led by your child's needs, abilities and levels of interest and motivation. Please continue to pick and choose from the slides rather than trying to do them all. If your child was really getting the hang of tens and ones or cvcc words, for example, focus upon these rather than moving on to something else. Or if you feel they need more simple counting and practical adding and taking away do this rather than symmetry. You are their teachers and we are so pleased with the progress and enthusiasm we are seeing. Thank you. We are very sorry that we are gradually adding more things you can choose to do on a screen. (PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY MEANS OF ACCESSING THESE WITH YOUR CHILD). This is mainly because several of you are asking how to keep your child's reading going and also because there are many resources available that are at different levels so you can select the best level to match your child's ability. The two websites we recommend you taking time to come a bit familiar with (if you haven't already) are Twinkl and Espresso. We are all on hand to help you. Just add an observation to your child's Tapestry journal, that way ONLY staff will see what you write, and we will respond in the best way we can. Best wishes from Mrs Rose, Mrs Batty and team. The text in red is for your information. You DO NOT need to read this to your child. Where quotation marks ‘....’ are used please use the same language with your child. The text in pink are suggested extension activities if you feel your child would like more work to do or they are achieving the set tasks quickly and easily and therefore need stretching.

This week we are going to be using another story you will all recognise - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Dear parents if you have a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar please read this with your child and enjoy the illustrations and story together. If you don't have the book it is on this link https://www.slideshare.net/samanthamorris211/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-757459

The link below has a lovely animated version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY

If your child loved retelling or re enacting stories they could retell this story using stick puppets (make your own or some available on Twinkl).

Monday 4th May Maths Can you use your calendar to say today's date? Using the Hungry Caterpillar story as a stimulus:

Can you say the days of the week in order starting from any day? Your child may remember the days of the week song we have sung at school or there are more on Youtube if you need them.

Can you say the months of the year? What is your favourite month? Why?

You could read these with your child. For the original copies go to Twinkl and search oy phoneme spotter.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Some Art Activities That you may wish to try over the next 4 days. The classic egg carton caterpillar!

Very Hungry Caterpillar Headband Start with a 10cm wide headband.

Then add yellow and green circles for his eyes and purple antennae.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Necklace

Cut out red paper circles about 2 cm in diameter. Punch a single hole in each one. Make the caterpillar’s head. Cut out face and glued on some eyes and antennae (Or draw on a face) . Punch a hole in the face for stringing later. Now it’s time to assemble the necklace! Cut your piece of string or yarn to the size you’d like for your child. Have you child first thread a green pasta onto the thread. Next they add one red circle, then green pasta etc. forming a pattern. (The pasta doesn't have to be green … but you can paint it…) When your child is happy with his or her caterpillar length, add the caterpillar head. Tie the string together to form a necklace.

Tuesday 5th May Phonics warm up - Reading Practise https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/SentSubPhase3.html or select phase 4

Can you read these yes/no questions? You could write yes or no for each question.

There are phase 2, 3, 4, and 5 Yes no cards on Twinkl you DON'T need to print them out your child could read them off the screen. Choose level best with your child. If your child thinks they are too hard it could put them off reading.

Maths Dear parents there are a few useful maths sheets on Twinkl if you search ‘Life cycle of a butterfly’ e.g. Roll and Colour Addition Activity to Support Teaching on The Very Hungry Caterpillar would be good for children who need to work on number recognition. Even if you don’t have a printer you could look at these for ideas.

If you have The Very Hungry Caterpillar book you could reread it or use https://www.slideshare.net/samanthamorris211/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-7574597 and encourage your child to count some of the foods. You could ask them simple adding and take away problems or get them to tell you ‘number stories’. Use the next slide if you don't have the book. E.g. Did the caterpillar eat fewer strawberries or plums? How many more strawberries than plums did it eat? How many pieces of fruit did the hungry caterpillar eat altogether? How many cakes did it eat?

Wednesday 6th May Reading practise You might like to watch ‘Tadpole's Promise’ on Espresso then you can have a go at the reading activities afterwards. https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/video/item1217572/grade1/module1217337/index.html

Talk with your child about how Tadpoles Promise and The Hungry Caterpillar are similar. Can you help them to make the links?

Phonics Phonics warm up - Play Tricky Word Trucks https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/TrickyWordTrucks.html or ask your parent to hide your tricky word flashcards around the house/garden and you find them. Our new digraph today is wh. Watch Ash’s Phonics https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/video/item97468/gradef/module634 25/index.html

Maths

Warm up - Can you quickly recall as many number bonds to ten as you can. You could show some of them with your fingers e.g. 4 and 6. If your child knows their number bonds they could recall how to make the teens numbers using one ten and how many ones?

Symmetry Maths

Lots of you enjoyed learning about symmetry before Easter and Butterflies lend themselves to Symmetry beautifully. You could use these links, or draw, paint or print symmetrical butterflies by folding paper in half and only painting on one side of the paper. You could use bottle tops, lego, blocks, leaves and flowers to make symmetrical butterflies. https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/video/item883119/grade1/module883106/index.html?source=searchall-all-all-all&source-keywords=symmetry Interactive symmetry activity https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/m1_problem_solving/activities/activity_symmetry.html?source=search-all-all-all-all&sour ce-keywords=symmetry

Super Learning Can you complete on of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ art tasks set on Monday or maybe you can think of your own ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ artwork to show us? Or perhaps you would rather learn a World War II song ready for VE day? (search - carradinescockneysingalongve day or plenty of others online).

Thursday 7th May Today Grasshoppers and Ladybirds we would love to see some of your amazing writing. You can choose what you write. It might be about ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, you could change that story and write your own. You may make a poster to put up in your window about VE day or something else. You might write a menu for a cafe you have set up in your house or garden. Perhaps you will write a letter that you can post or deliver. Remember to try and leave a space between each word and have a go at forming those letters you have been practising with your families correctly.

Phonics Play the word machine game https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/e1_word_machine/index.html?source=search-all-all-all-all&source-keywords=reading%2 0words

For children practising 3 letter words https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/ey_word_machine/index.html?source=search-all-all-all-all&source-keywords=reading%2 0words

Handwriting Choose one lowercase letter that you find difficult to write correctly and practice forming it correctly. There are videos on Espresso, sheets to print on Twinkl but it is just as good to use chalk on your patio, crayons on big paper, etc.

Maths

The Very Hungry Caterpillar A Game To Play If you’ve ever played Beetles then this game is very similar. Roll a dice, then draw the appropriate part. The first one to make the hungry caterpillar wins!

Super Learning Tomorrow it is

VE Day.

What can you find out about VE day? The following presentation contains pictures and information about VE Day. It is a very edited version, that should be shared and discussed if you choose to use it. This presentation is primarily a discussion tool. You might find that your child is interested in parts of it or is happy just to look through quite quickly. The last few slides have questions to help prompt thoughts. You can also use this as a means to compare then with now. How might we celebrate when lock down ends? Mrs Batty loves bunting!
