Dear Parents. We hope you had a lovely bank holiday weekend. If you are anything like me the novelty of home schooling wore off many weeks ago and you dread Mondays for this reason! For those of you feeling like me I promised myself I would give you less activities so as not to overwhelm you but sorry I failed! There are just so many lovely activities that can be linked with Eric Carle stories and these just touch the surface. PLEASE, please, please just pick what interests your child or what you feel they need most. You are all doing so many other valuable activities with your children that do not link to the plans but are so important for their development e.g. throwing and catching a ball, kids yoga, baking, preparing meals, digging in the garden, caring for animals, etc. It is wonderful to see. I try to vary the phonics so that there are some phase 3, 4 and 5 tasks. SOME children are definitely not yet confident enough to move on to phase 5 (the new digraphs for this week aw, ew, ue). They need to please practise phase 3 (and 4) sounds otherwise they will lose confidence. It is much better for a child to master something securely than be pushed on before they are ready. Twinkl, espresso, phonics play, Reading Eggs, Alphablock videos all offer a wide selection of phase 3 activities. However by simply practising the single letters and digraphs we had taught at school (orange bordered letter cards from packs we gave you before Easter) and a few tricky words new each week you would really help your child. For those of you with two or more children at our school I am sure you will be pleased to learn that as of next week the creative/super learning type activities that we plan will have the same theme across the whole school and Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be set the same tasks. YOU DO NOT NEED A PRINTER OR TO REGULARLY USE THE INTERNET TO TEACH YOUR CHILD FROM THESE SLIDES however there are recommended website links. More educational activities/sheets to supplement these Powerpoints (or do instead if they are better for you or your child) have been added to the documents section on Tapestry, especially for maths.
The text in red is for your information. You DO NOT need to read this to your child. The text in pink are suggested extension activities if you feel your child would like more work to do or they are achieving the set tasks quickly and easily and therefore need stretching.
Please remember we are all on hand to help you. Just add an observation to your child's Tapestry journal, that way ONLY staff will see what you write, and we can respond just to you. Thank you and well done for doing so amazingly with homeschooling. Best wishes from Mrs Rose, Mrs Batty and all of the EYFS team.
Monday 11th May Eric Carle is an illustrator and author (he created The Very Hungry Caterpillar on last weeks plan). What can you find out about Eric Carle? Where does he live? How many of his books do you know already? Which ones would you like to read? https://eric-carle.com/about-eric-carle/ Is a great website you might like to use throughout the week.
Today’s Eric Carle story is ‌. The Very Quiet Cricket Which of the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdiGEjz5b0Q
creatures in this book might you find in England? Do you know anyone or anything that is very quiet?
Monday 11th May Maths - Today we are learning to solve problems involving sharing. See the next slide
What could you do with the one left over? What would happen if 4 people came to the picnic?
Vocabulary to use: equal left over
same
half
equal amount
What if………? fair It should help your child if you use plates to represent the number of people you are asking them to share the food between. You could use grapes, raisins, pieces of bread stick, etc, playdough food, TOY FOOD or food you have drawn or printed off and cut out.
share
fairly
all
You can practise sharing out into equal groups in other contexts e.g. sharing top trump or other card games out. Play your dominoes game, sharing out the dominoes equally.
Monday 11th May Phonics phase 3 warm up https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/grab-a-giggling-grapheme
Phonics play has lauched a new updated website that is tablet friends you still need to login with User name: march20 Password: home if you haven’t already or you may need to Log in again. ↓ sheets like this are in documents
Can you read these words? Maybe you can think of words that rhyme with some of these words?
Monday 11th May Perhaps you can find a way to record what you have found?
Tuesday 12th May 2020 Todays Eric Carle story is …. The Very Busy Spider. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEPYK mIt4dU What do you like to do to keep you busy? How do you feel when you have finished something you are proud of?
Tuesday 12th May 2020 Phonics warm up
CHOOSE phase 3 Or use your orange bordered letter cards as flashcards and see if your child knows all of these phase 3 phonemes. If they find some difficult to recognise please practise these regularly in different/fun ways as the children are expected to know these before July. PLEASE DO this instead of teaching your child the new digraphs on this weeks planning. Message us if you would like to know which phonics is best for your child. https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/flashcards-speed-trials
Have you remembered the four trigraphs we have taught?
igh
air
ure
Practise sheets are available on Twinkl
ear
Can you think of two words for each of these trigraphs?
Can you read this text? How many igh words did you read?
Maths
The maths challenge activities are short activity ideas that can fit into your day and will help your child see maths as fun. You can repeat each activity as many times as your child wants to. Feel free to change the ideas to suit your child’s interests, what you have in your house and their current level of development. If your child wants to represent their thinking on paper let them do so in their own way. For example they might not want to write numbers, but they might want to draw to communicate their mathematical thinking. Many more of these challenge cards are in the documents folder ‘ Maths
activities/sheets that are suitable for all your children for you to use at home’
If your child is confident at counting accurately in ones they could count in twos.
Drawing challenges to use over the week
Or perhaps you would like to make a 3D model of a spider or weave a web with wool?
Wednesday 13th May - Reading and talking
Today’s Eric Carle Story is ….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XrPyF4Mpl4 You might prefer to read this version of the book to your child. You can mute the video and read the words. Do you like fireworks? Do you ever feel lonely? Can you think of someone who may feel lonely at times? What facts can you find out about fireflies?
Phonics Phonics phase 3 reading practise https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/sentence-substitution-ph3
Parents please remember if your child does not yet recognise digraphs such as oa, ch, th, er, ur they should revise these in fun ways rather than learning aw.
Let’s learn a new digraph - aw Watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xvdbR6g060
How many words can you think of that have aw in them? Can you write a list of all the words you think of. You may want to draw some pictures to match some of your words. Does aw always come at the end of the words you have thought of?
Can you write a sentence beginning with the words I saw ‌.. ?
Maths Warm up - Can you quickly recall as many number bonds to ten as you can. You could show some of them with your fingers e.g. 4 and 6. If you child knows the number bonds of ten can they say all the number bonds of 11 or 12 ………… 20? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch7KzI3n2Zk very loud but the children like it! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZi-6_-Uhwc
Today’s maths activity is to choose a few of the
appropriate
Lego Challenge
Cards below to have a go at.
You may wish to use some of these links however there is NO need to use the internet for maths home learning. Making maths practical, based upon real life situations and FUN; as well as talking about maths and getting your child to talk about the strategies they use to find an answer are THE most important way you can help.
These are more difficult.
Think of your own adding and taking away brick challenges.

Super Learning Last week we learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly.
Can you learn about the life cycle of another minibeast? Maybe it will be a minibeast you saw in one of Eric Carle’s books. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD-LNsQkym4 - dragon fly

Phonics
use a real book, Twinkl, Reading Eggs or Espresso so that children can apply their phonics to a reading activity. E.g. https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/4/sentence-substitution-ph4
Have you had a Barbeque recently?
Can you guess
what our new digraph is? WATCH Ash’s phonics on Espresso https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/video/item97598/grade1/module63425/index.html?source=search-all-al l-all-all&source-keywords=ue
Today can you write a list of all the ue words you can think of (then do ew tomorrow or do ue and ew at the same time).
Super Learning and Maths Can you make up your own maths game? This may help others learn about or practise shape, counting, adding, number recognition, etc. You may like to make up your own version of game you already know how to play e.g. Top trumps, snakes and ladders, dominoes. Twinkl has some games masters but these are probably better for older children or for you to write on for your child.
Friday 15th May - Literacy Can you choose another Eric Carle Story that you would like to read/listen to. It might be one we have had at school like ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’, ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear’ or ‘Slowly, Slowly, Slowly said the Sloth’ or a new one that you have never heard. What is your favourite Eric Carle book and why? Can you compare two of his books? How are they the same? How are they different?
If you could meet Eric Carle what would you ask him?
Or for Fun you and your child together could read - The very hungry school. https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/e1_big_books/hungry_school/friday.html
Phonics Warm up activity https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/dragonsden OR please practise your childs letter flashcards and tricky words. Can you make a list of
ew
words? The alphablocks may help you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spiH4piN3yc STOP video at 2:56 when alphablocks make word glue to avoid confusion/overload!
Friday 15th May
Super Learning Have you noticed similarities between all the illustrations/pictures in Eric Carle’s books? How do you think he created his illustrations? https://eric-carle.com/about-eric-carle/ may help you to answer this. There are also some great Youtube videos that demonstrate how he makes his pictures by making collages.
Can you make a collage of any sort using whatever resources you have available? This might be a minibeast or something totally different.
