October 2019 Dear Parents/Carers, To continually improve the reading provision for the children of our school we are focusing on how we are effectively using our reading scheme. We base our reading scheme primarily on Oxford Reading Tree but your child may be a ‘Free Reader’ meaning that they can choose freely from our class and library ranges suitable to their age and ability.. Your child will start to bring home 2-3 reading books from our scheme a week this half term. This may also be a book of choice, if they are a free reader. Foundation Stage We ask you to read the books more than once so your child has time to internalise the stories and discuss them with you, growing to recall and remember them, These books maybe wordless or have very few words but are very important to your child’s reading development. Early Books allow children to learn how stories work, including the order and direction in which they read, without the pressure of too many words on the page. Children will enjoy talking about the story and discuss what is happening in the pictures. The first step in reading is to use visual prompts to help read the words. The pictures provide lots of opportunities for playing with environmental sounds, an important first step in the teaching of phonics. Oxford Reading Scheme We ask that you share the reading scheme books more than once so that your child can consolidate learning and develop as wide a reading vocabulary as possible. We will give you a reading bookmark to share with your child, so that you can ask questions to help with their comprehension of any of the texts shared. Your child's books will be changed on a Monday but we ask that they have their book folder with them everyday. This is because we will continue to help them with their individual and group reading at school,

Headteacher: Mr Ian Bartle BA Ed (Hons) NPQH Free Readers We will also give you a reading bookmark to share with your child, so that you can ask questions to help with their comprehension of any of the texts shared. It is fun to co-read stories with your child and minibook clubs at home make reading a priority in your home. We also encourage that you share library books at home on a weekly basis and books of your own too. There will be a reading list on our website that will also help you choose books suitable for your age of child. Furthermore listening to an adult read a book is also a great way of engaging your child with stories and the pleasure of reading too. We provide a reading home contact book so that teachers and parents can communicate the progress that your child is making. We really value this partnership between home and school and suggest that you aim for ten minutes of reading and listening per day. Short, enjoyable sessions encourage your child to read for pleasure, whilst regular additional practice really does boost their skills Thank you and if there are any questions please do ask your class teacher.
