Chasing the Northern Lights By Caryl Zimmerman
M
e, my husband and our friend’s wife searched the sky through our windows while open fields rushed by on both sides of the road. The only sound was the spinning tires and gentle whoosh of the car’s heater. We were on a hunt to see the Aurora Borealis for the first time, having moved to Alberta from Texas a couple of years earlier. While it’s possible to see the northern lights from Calgary, it is unusual. Due to recent solar activity, we had heard on the news that this would be one of those times. And according to a website we found, this night would be a particularly good time to try. We needed a clear, moonless night and a dark area outside the city. Because of our location on the planet, the lights would be low on the horizon, so we also needed to avoid the mountains which rise up not too far from the city. Best viewing time is midnight.
We met at 11:00pm and pointed the car north. First objective was to drive away from the city lights. Second was to find a dark, flat area where we would stop and simply wait. As we drove, we spotted a faint shaft of light in the distance, the kind you see when the local dealership is having a big sale and shoots a spotlight into the sky. Curious, but not what we were expecting. We drove on. According to the GPS, the road we were on started to turn west, so we looked for a good, paved road that 8

As I took in the scene, I wondered how a girl from Long Island wound up here - close to midnight on the center stripe of a Canadian road, looking at more stars than I’ve ever seen in my life. I giggled. would take us further north. We passed the entrance to a ranch, a couple of dirt roads (one with a sign, “Use at your own risk”) and finally found a decent road that not only headed north, but UP. Planting ourselves in a spot above the trees and hills would only help.

Unfortunately, this road also curved west, but before turning around we stopped to take a look. We all got out, bundled up against the cold, and tilted our heads back to search the dark, star studded sky. The lights inside the car suddenly shut themselves off and there we were- in the middle of a perfectly quiet, empty road. Snow dotted the small embankments on either side. We waited. Shifted on our feet. Looked at one another. The sky in front of us was as black as the sky behind us. It was close to 2 a.m. with temperatures in the 20s, so we decided to head home. During the drive back, we saw the lights make another brief appearance, but drove on, enjoying their dance from the car.
No unusual lights, though, so we hopped back in the car, retraced our route and found a different road which took us (eventually) to a spot which offered up the show we had come to see. No brilliant colors, but the white lights we saw grew gradually in intensity, flicker-
Much to my disappointment, I have no photos to share. My friend and I both had good, DSLR cameras but neither one of them would work. I still find that odd. Two relatively new cameras, fully charged and completely reliable became impotent during the Aurora Borealis. I’ll need to figure out why because we plan to do this again on another promising night. But this time we want some color! ABD 9

Spring is just around the corner, and we are all looking forward to wrapping up another cold Calgary winter. As we yearn to see the flowers bloom, we begin to think about the spring cleaning that we have been putting off due to the lousy weather. Well the Calgary Lilac Festival is having their 12th annual event on May 27, 2012. Being voted “Calgary’s best free festival” by Fast Forward magazine for the past 14 years, Lilac has a lot to live up to. Free entertainment consists of international music, sizzling dancing and the ability to taste food from around the work make this a festival you must attend. Visiting the Lancaster Society Air Museum in Nanton, Alberta By Gayle Crabtree
Hubby is an air buff so when we saw the museum we knew we had to visit. It was right on Hwy. 2 about a half hour south of Calgary, Alberta.

he Lancaster Society Air Museum in Nanton, Alberta was a fun and educational stop for our family. We learned about the Royal Canadian Air Force was to the fight of World War II. Hubby is an air buff so when we saw the museum we knew we had to visit. It was right on Hwy. 2 about a half hour south of Calgary, Alberta. The Nanton Lancaster Society Air Museum has very easy highway access and plenty of free parking.
A mounted airplane draws your attention as you drive down the highway. This signals your arrival at the Lancaster Society Air Museum in Nanton. You can help but be excited when you see it. There are several outdoor displays which catch your attention next. These include Canada’s Bomber Command Memorial, the Nanton Cenotaph and other memorials.

According to the Lancaster Air Society Museum, the Tallboy weighed 5 tons and was used in 1944. The Tallboy was so big that it had to be carried by a specially designed airplane called the Avro Lancaster Bomber. Seeing an inactive version in real life was pretty cool. I learned a lot at the museum that day. The static displays were great. Most were colorful and intriguing. The airplanes seemed big until you realized how small the cockpits are on most of them. Several times I found myself wondering how fighter pilots actually fit into those tiny spaces. What surprised me most was to learn about the United States citizens who signed up under the Royal Canadian Air Force to fight in World War II. History buffs know that we were a little behind other countries to get involved in the war. More than a few of our citizens decided to fight anyway and so they joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. At the Lancaster Society Air Museum we learned that it was illegal for the Royal Canadian Air Force to recruit pilots from the United States. An enactment of legislation in the early 1940’s paved the way to make it easier for United States citizens to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Visiting the Lancaster Society Air Museum was truly inspiring. My hat is off to all of the brave men and women who continue to fight to keep our countries safe.
