The National Finals Ski-Joring Races take place , March 10th & 11th 2012 in Red Lodge. It’s winter FUn…western stYle, and we’re hoping that you will join us! The Red Lodge Ski-Joring Association each year hosts The National Finals Ski-Joring Races. It is a two-day event which, this year, takes place March 10th & 11th, 2012, at the Home of Champions Rodeo Grounds, west of Red Lodge. Originating in the Scandinavian countries as a form of winter transportation, the west has 8
transformed this into an action packed competition wherein teams negotiate a 700+ foot course, the horse taking a track to the inside of the course while the skier in tow, negotiates the 20-some slalom gates and four jumps in hopes of completing two fast, clean runs which isn’t easy at speeds sometimes topping 25 mph. Prize money is awarded for the fastest combined times for the two day event as well as fastest times each day. The skier must be upright and on at least one ski when crossing the finish line and a 5 second penalty is incurred for each missed gate. There is a separate “longest jump” competition wherein the rider and horse pull their skier over one jump for the longest distance each day. Distances have exceeded 60 feet. The crowd is as much a part
of the fun as the competition, constructing elaborate weekend shelters on the back of flatbed trucks to protect them from the “anybody’s guess” weather. BBQ and tailgate professionals, football tailgaters have nothing on these folks. Competition starts at noon each day and takes place at The Home of Champions Rodeo Grounds, west of Red Lodge on State Highway 78. Admission in $5 per person and children under 12 are free.
The National Finals Ski-Joring Races are exciting for the spectators and challenging for the competitors with up to $20,000 in cash and prizes being awarded in different divisions. Junior prizes include a colt and a new pair of skis and there are champion buckles, jackets as well as cash for the adults. For many years, the mountain town of Whitefish, Montana has celebrated its Winter Carnival based on the lore and history of Ullr, the God of Snow. February 3-5, 2012 will present the 53rd Annual Whitefish Winter Carnival theme “Pescado Blanco South of the Border,” offering locals and visitors unique ways to celebrate winter with quirky Whitefish traditions.

he biggest challenge to winter kayaking is finding the motivation to go. There are many days where I’m looking outside my window, the wind is blowing rain and snow sideways, and I’m thinking to myself, “Why in the world would I want to go play in the river in this weather?” Some of my friends would suggest to shut ‘er down and do a winter sport. I would if I could, but I need the river to keep me sane. Maybe I’m a human equivalent to the Labrador. I constantly need interaction with the river to keep this machine well-greased. Sure, I would rather be in South America all winter, but my life’s not that simple anymore. I decided years ago that I enjoy having a home and didn’t want to be a dirt bag forever, so I decided to make life a little more complicated. I guess most people call those responsibilities. (For all you young folks out there, disregard that responsibility thing!!) Some of those responsibilities for me include owning a business, homes, dogs, and trying to convince my girlfriend that I’m worth keeping around. Located in the Clark Fork Valley approximately 100 miles NW of Missoula, Thompson Falls has the mildest climate in Montana. At an elevation of 2419’, Thompson Falls has an average of 20 inches of precipitation per year, and an average of 115 frost free days. It is known as part of the “Banana Belt” of NW Montana. The climate along with its breathtaking scenery make this quaint little town an ideal place to live, or visit. Thompson Falls is surrounded by millions of acres of
National Forest providing endless recreation opportunities for camping, wild life viewing, berry & mushroom picking, and much more! The reservoir created by the dam on the Clark Fork River provide un crowded fishing, boating, swimming and other water recreation. Several boat accesses are available. 28
With a population of around 2100, Thompson Falls is the perfect sized community for those who enjoy a small town atmosphere, and has all the amenities needed for everyday living! HistOrY: Thompson Falls was named after David Thompson, the British explorer, geographer and fur trader. He was called the Koo Koo Sint (star gazer) by the Indians. He established a fur trading post, the ‘Saleesh House’, in 1809. The Saleesh House was used sporadically until the 1820s, and mostly by employees. The Saleesh House is no longer in existence. There was little activity in the area until 1881 and the coming of the railroad. The few inhabitants of the town felt they were being neglected by the Railroad, so they decided to get attention for themselves. They piled logs on the railway, and forced the train to stop. The townspeople then boarded the train to persuade passengers to settle in Thompson Falls. One of the crew stayed behind and built the first home within the present town site. Soon after in 1883, the gold rush hit Couer D’Alene mines came and the town grew to accommodate the men going over the Murray trail to the mines. In 1885 John Russell bought 40 acres and platted the townsite.
