here’s something about homemade cinnamon rolls. The kind smothered in gooey caramel and nuts that are so messy to eat you end up sucking sugar off your fingers like a toddler. I’ve got a weakness for baked sweets anyway and now I’ve got a Saturday morning habit Hamilton Farmer’s Market.

very Independence Day for three days, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association comes to Red Lodge for the Home of Champions Rodeo.

One of the biggest and best in the state, this rodeo brings professional cowboys and cowgirls from all over to compete in some of the roughest and toughest events. Meanwhile, the grand stands fill with fans, eager to see their favorite competitors take home the biggest buckle.

Each day at noon, there is a parade on Broadway Avenue to celebrate the 4th of July and commence the rodeo. Hundreds of people line the street watching as fire engines, rodeo queens, horse drawn buggies and local business floats roll by. During this event, local storefronts open their doors and food and souvenir vendors line the streets. 12

Each night, everyone heads to the fairgrounds west of town to partake in the excitement of the rodeo and all it has to offer. Here, professional cowboys and cowgirls compete in several nail-biting events, including calf roping, bull riding, saddle broncin’ and barrel racing. These riders and ropers are the best of the best, and are sure to give fans a good show. If that weren’t enough, the rodeo clown, Timber Tuckness, is sure to get the whole audience laughing with his jokes and


goofy stunts. Also during the rodeo, vendors serve delicious food and drinks (including alcohol), as well as rodeo souviners and tack. Rodeo Events: • Bull riding • Team roping • Barrel racing • Breakaway roping • Saddle Bronc Riding

My favorite event is always saved for last—the wild bronc riding. Here, teams of cowboys must saddle a wild bronc and ride it past a barrel on the other side of the arena. It may sound easy, but it’s next to impossible. These broncs are wild and buck whenever they are touched—let alone rode. If they can get the broncs saddled, the cowboys are in for a wild bucking ride to the barrel.

Dream Destinations

History: This year marked the 81st anniversary of the Home of Champions Rodeo. It all began in the late 1800’s when cowboys would get together weekly to ride exhibition broncs. In 1929, a group of local cowboys got together and built an arena where they began charging on-goers admission to watch them ride wild horses. This marked the first Home of Champions Rodeo. However, the rodeo didn’t get this name until 1954, when local cowboy Bill Linderman won his third World All Around Champion Title, making Red Lodge the true Home of Champions. MTD

Experiencing Montana’s Rich and Colorful History Despite its small town appearance and lack of major chain stores, Havre, Montana has a wide enough variety of businesses and historical sites to make a day trip or even an overnight stay an attractive proposition for anyone looking to explore more of Montana. Havre is rich in colorful history and its streets and buildings feature frequent reminders of its past as a rugged and lawless frontier town the likes of which is usually only seen in over the top Western movies. While the current day locales in and around Havre are much more toned down than their bygone counterparts, there is still plenty of excitement to be found. The town was originally called Bullhook Bottoms and sprung up when the fort at the nearby railroad station was abandoned, leaving several people with no homes and travelers with no spot to stop for the night. With no governing body of any sort and no law enforcement to prevent crime Bullhook Bottoms quickly gained a reputation as an anything goes watering hole where just about any illicit activity could be found for the right price. As more people decided to stay and more buildings were erected the town gained extra attention from

the nearby settlements and soon had to find ways to hide the less legal businesses that had previously operated in the open. Rather than work out of back rooms or use secret codes the enterprising criminals decided to build an underground city where they could continue to ply their wares at their leisure. The secret hallways made Bullhook Bottoms the place to go to find anything that wasn’t supposed to be found, which made it one of the biggest purveyors of alcohol during Prohibition. One of the most interesting stops in Havre is the “Havre Under the Streets” tour, which takes the visitor on a guided trek through part of the remaining corridors from the old underground city. People from all across the state whose families lived in Bullhook Bottoms have generously donated antiques that were once used in the town to make the recreated shops and passageways as authentic as possible. While many of the rooms were purposefully left dark, all the better to keep secret who was doing what in any given den of sin, some of them were lit by sunlight filtered through colored glass squares which were set into the ceilings. The squares still remain today and can be found on the sidewalks 19


around the downtown area. The tour starts in the old post office and then works its way through the other legitimate locations such as the general store and butcher’s shop. Before long the more thrilling establishments are reached and the visitors are given the opportunity to explore a seedy saloon where gunslingers played cards, a brothel with a secret entrance into a nearby building which was once a hotel, and an opium den. One of the final rooms is an old drug store which still has half full bottles of various tonics and prescription medications that haven’t been opened in nearly a hundred years.

Once everyone’s hunger has been satisfied it’s time to move onto the shopping. While anyone used to massive malls and big name retail outlets may be disappointed by the smaller scale stores there are still several businesses that are worth visiting and even a few surprisingly different stores that wouldn’t normally be found in a small Montana town. The Holiday Village Mall features the standard clothing shops and cell phone islands, but also boasts a New Age health food store with a large selection of herbs and teas. At the opposite end of the mall is even a free admission museum that has dinosaur fossils from the surrounding area and exhibits on the homesteaders who originally settled the Montana frontier.

The down town area features a second smaller shopping complex dubbed the Atrium Mall for its many hanging plants. Book lovers will want to check out the book trade store where old books can be swapped for credit towards new ones.
