Love for a cherished cabin is a powerful thing. Some of the allure is aesthetic, but the

remainder of this affection is tied to location, purpose and the almighty tug of memory. Just ask Gregory and Anita O’Neil, who purchased their 800-square-foot lodgepole pine cabin on Sheep Mountain near Red Lodge, Montana, eight years ago. It was love at first sight.

longtime friend and I were looking for a working ranch in Montana,” says Gregory. “Although these 120 acres on the mountain couldn’t be ranched, the real estate agent drove us up the steep trail to see the cabin anyway. I got out of the truck and said, ‘Sold.’ “There went the ranch idea.” What blew Gregory away was the view from this 6,000-foot perch. The structure sits 25 feet from a cliff that drops 500 feet to Red Lodge Creek. Montana’s Big Sky Country opens in all directions and includes the state’s two tallest peaks, Mount Wood and Granite Peak, both more than 12,000 feet high; the AbsarokaBeartooth Wilderness; and the adjacent Custer National Forest. Park. “The vista is wilderness, so it will never change,” says Gregory. “At night, all you can see is one little light from a homestead in the distance.” The Houston-based couple, who had been coming to Montana for 30 years to run the family ranch in Helena, say the cabin provides a glorious getaway for their children: Sean David, 29; Lauren, 27; and Jay, 19. Although it was built in 1997, the cabin was a little rundown and lacked power and water. That called for a bit of rethinking. “I wanted a rustic feel, but we’re all used to our little luxuries,” says Gregory with a laugh. Thus began a cosmetic and practical renovation. rustic Allure, Modern Touches

Gregory wanted to preserve the ambiance of the cabin and use indigenous materials wherever possible. Contractor Don Wolff and Brad Logan, the original builder, took on the job. Brad had used local lodgepole pine character logs, ranging in diameter from 8 to 12 inches, to construct the original cabin. “He fit them together like a puzzle,” says Gregory. “Many have large burls, and the ends are hand-hewn.” Gregory couldn’t bear to ruin such rusticity with modern paraphernalia like wall switches. “We made 4-inch diameter wood dowels that plug every outlet and light switch,” he says. “To turn on a light, you pull out the dowel, flip the switch and slip the dowel back in.” In the kitchen, the existing hand pump, which connects to an under- counter reservoir, was augmented with modern plumbing. A three-burner propane stovetop hides under a cutting board, and the propane refrigerator boasts a wooden facade.

Three redwood decks expand the living space to the great outdoors. In the walkout lower level, carpeting was replaced with wideplanked floors to match the main level. “Brad sent me a photo of the logs and then a photo of the logs being milled,” says Gregory. “They had to send the logs to Bozeman to be kilndried.” This Property is For Sale, and it is listed by Cindy Dunham of Dunham Real Estate Services in Red Lodge, Montana. Twin sisters Joyce Barnett and Jeanne Majusiak, owners of Whispering Pines, an antique and decorating shop in Red Lodge, maintained the O’Neils’ vision with rustic decor. “We wanted it to look as if everything had been there a while,” says Jeanne. “We used a lot of hickory furniture in the tradition of Old Faithful Lodge. We also employed blanket fabrics that are reminiscent of the Old West.” Animal skins are a theme throughout: axis deer skins hang as curtains in the windows; brindle cowhide covers dining room seat cushions; beaver-and-hide pillows accompany a mink throw on the sofa; and a bearskin rug sprawls on the downstairs floor. “We even used beaver skins for mats in the bathroom,” says Joyce. Outside, Gregory was worried about that 500-foot cliff. “There’s a lot of fog up there, and you can’t always tell where the drop is,” he says. So he half buried 80,000 pounds of boulders along the edge to provide some textural warning. Then he landscaped. “We spread 1,000 pounds of wildflower seeds. It looks fantastic in the spring. Anita got up one morning last spring and picked 23 different kinds of wildflowers.” MTD

“We ran power more than 2 miles up the mountain in underground lines,” says Gregory. “All the mechanicals are hidden underground. It took more than a month to get the work done, because there’s so much granite. They had to break through the stone, feed cables through a little spool and bury them 3 feet below the ground.” About 200 yards out of sight of the cabin is the power center, complete with gas tanks and a generator that comes on automatically if there’s a power failure. Enough juice can be generated to power the cabin for about a year. Oh, and the TV? “The satellite dish is hidden on the property,” confesses Gregory. — K.T.A.

A Spectacular Trail Find On The Swan Range by: Gordon Hollingshead

T

This time was different. Previous years I had settled into a tent near the car at the viewpoint below Richmond Peak, a timbered ridge to the north and east of Seeley Lake, Montana. Time and again I had enjoyed the awesome view of the mighty wall of mountain ridge that rose up from the canyon below me, towering over all surroundings - the majestic Montana peak of Sunday Mountain. From the Richmond Peak vantage point the face of the peak, made up of bare slide zones, with a few ridges of trees and brush, appeared to rise almost straight up from the valley floor below. It was not a mountain wall that I would expect to yield a trail, a bit of a cliffhanger path that would lead to the summit.

Dream Destinations

Such a huge relief to make it past the dense brush, with no bear tales to write home about. Out into the open I was on the lower flanks of this mountain I had dreamt of tackling for years. As noted, the trail immediately took a sharp turn, upward in a steep climb. Then, veering off to the north across the face, a slightly leveler trek ensued as it angled upward across the face through wonderful fields of bear-grass mixed with a myriad of flowers in a rainbow of colors. What a sense of triumph! In all directions the ground dropped below me, to the east off into the vastness of the Bob Marshall Wilderness with a large expanse of Grizzly Basin directly below. An absolutely spectacular find on the Swan Range. From that wonderful vantage point other primary access jumping off routes for the Bob Marshall Wilderness were visible up and down the Swan Range. To the north Holland Lake marked the trail system from there, and south Pyramid Peak marked the access routes over Pyramid Pass. The area - such a wonder, and now I knew there was another route into the Bob. Truth be known, even though the climb was, well...., a climb, it really didn’t take as long to make it to the Bob Marshall boundary as taking the other two primary routes.

Regardless, it was still a physically challenging journey that would lead to a host of aches and pains in this 50 something Montana explorer.
