Ce’ad Mil—a hundred thousand welcomes! The Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival held in Hamilton, Montana, on August 24-26, 2012, features nationally sanctioned competitions for Highland Games, Pipe and Drum Bands and Highland Dancers drawing world-class competitors, and Irish dancing demonstrations. The beautiful grounds of the historic Daly Mansion provide the perfect natural setting for the Festival. A self-guided tour of the Mansion is included in the price of admission. The inaugural Festival in 2010 brought together people from all over the United States and Canada for three days. Almost 2,000 people came to the beautiful Bitterroot Valley to find family connections and thrill to the Pipe and Drum Bands marching in the opening ceremonies. Word of the unique Festival spread and the 2011 Festival experienced a significant increase in attendance. Almost 5,000 people dealt with unanticipated parking difficulties with smiles and enthusiasm. Festival organizers have worked hard to solve the parking challenges for the 2012 Festival. Parking on the Mansion grounds will be limited primarily to Festival participants, vendors and Sponsors. An on-site parking pass can be purchased, in advance only, online at bitterrootscottishirishfestival.org. The price is $70 per package until August 1, and $80 after August 1. The Parking Package includes four adult weekend passes, or a Family Pass for two adults and two children, and an on-site Parking Pass. Other guests will be able to park at the Hamilton High School parking lot. A shuttle service will operate at 15 minute intervals between the school and the Daly Mansion from 4 - 10 pm on Friday,

Shuttle buses will also leave from the downtown Hamilton Public Parking Lot at 15-20 minutes intervals on Saturday only and from Valley Drug in downtown Stevensville at 30-40 minute intervals on Saturday and Sunday for transport to and from the Daly Mansion.

At the heart of the event are the clans that gather from all over the country, bringing excitement, education, heritage and culture to those attending the festival. Representatives from almost 30 Scottish and Irish clans provide an opportunity for attendees to discover their own Celtic or Gaelic history. The 2012 Honored Clan is Clan Campbell. A complete listing of Clans attending is available on the event website at bitterrootscottishirishfestival.org. Most clans have their own tartan patterns, usually dating from the 19th century, and members of the clan wear kilts, plaids, sashes, ties, scarves, or other items of clothing made of the appropriate tartan as a badge of membership. Members of modern day clans preserve and promote the customs, traditions, and heritage of the Scottish people.

Bagpipes are a strong image of Scottish culture which for centu-


ries were considered instruments of war. Their sound cut through the din of battle and was heard for miles, intimidating enemies, and inspiring comrades. The traditional Scottish pipe band consists of a section of pipers playing the Great Highland Bagpipes, a section of snare drummers, several tenor drummers, and one or two bass drummers. When on parade the band is led by a Drum Major. Every year, from spring through fall, the pipe bands compete throughout the world. The BSIF’s Competition is sanctioned by the Saskatchewan Pipe Band Association. Bands are judged individually against other bands, as well as the pipers and drummers being judged individually. Solo competitions and drum workshops will be held on Saturday morning. Opening Ceremonies begin at noon. The Band Competition begins at 1 pm; winners of the competition will be announced at 4 pm.

Highland Dancers

Red McWilliams, one of the most recognized names in Celtic music in the US, combines a rich baritone voice with a percussive guitar. He performs kilted in the tartan of MacLeod of Harris. Lisa Lynne & George Tortorelli perform with the Celtic Harp and Bamboo flutes, two of the most ancient instruments. They leave audiences spellbound with their magical and endearing sound. Lisa is accompanied by George’s flutes on her popular Windham Hill releases The music of Malarkey is a mix of lively jigs, toe-tapping reels, raucous Irish harmonies and an occasional Irish ballad. Cootehill specializes in traditional Irish reels and jigs with a few rousing songs thrown in for Bisceglia Family good measure. The Bisceglia Family sings a delightful mix of Scottish songs and patriotic ballads, Irish melodies, country music and contemporary American folk music. Other entertainers include the Dillon Junior Fiddlers, and the Montana A Cappella Society which has been invited to appear at the International Choir Festival in Cork, Ireland in 2013. The exciting performances by the Order of Epona, a medieval equestrian troupe from Fort Collins, Colorado, take the viewer back to the Middle Ages. Performers banish evil with the clash of a sword, rescuing damsels in distress. Vendor Booths This wonderful extravaganza features princesses, ruffians, sorcerers, and even a dragon fight to the death. A unique addition to the 2012 event will be a wedding which will take place on Saturday afternoon. Over 200 guests have been invited to share the union of a couple who were so charmed by the 2011 event they wished to plan their wedding as an integral part of the overall festivities. Scottish Highland Games have been in existence for thousands of years. Historically the men of Scotland were forbidden by their invaders to bear or train with arms in order to prevent another uprising. To prepare for the inevitable battle, the implements of war were replaced with the implements of the Highland game. Warriors participated in contests to build their strengths and skills for battle, while earning respect and favor within their clan. The contests simulated throwing stones from battlements, throwing ladders up castle walls, and swinging the long and heavy Claymore Scottish sword. The Scottish American Athletic Association (SAAA) oversees the BSIF athletic competition. The caber is the premier Scottish event; it entails accuracy of the competitor flipping a large pole. The popular Sheaf competition involves throwing a 16 or 20 pound burlap bag over a bar with a pitch fork an average of 30 feet high. The Stone event is much like the more familiar shot put, except it uses a field stone weighing between 17 and 26 lb.

Elizabeth Coyle, a native of Scotland now living in Spokane, will again judge this event. Highland dancers are judged on three major criteria: timing, technique, and interpretation/overall deportment. Additionally, the dancer is judged on jumping height and overall confidence. Irish dance gained great popularity in the US due to the world-famous show Riverdance. Somewhat different from Highland Dancing, the Irish dancing will be a demonstration, rather than a completion.
