the new excess wpa 2.0 | architecture and the green new deal fall 2019
kalahar award finalist
Our architectural proposal exists as a network of new transportation, housing, amenities, and a system of reuse spread across the United States. Through the examination of the potential of excess and excessiveness as architectural methods, we have found possibilities using waste as tools of creating architecture and urban systems.
By utilizing byproducts of modern life, plastic and carbon, as construction materials, we imagine a future in which current speculations and experimentations of sustainability become our future reality.
in collaboration w/ cyle king instructor | shelby doyle location | des moines, iowa
This leads us into the theory of creating a “new excess, and conceivably redetermining the negative narrative that follows excess.

Serving as the backbone of our infrastructure is a high speed rail network creating fast and easy transportation from urban center to urban center, which in this project are architecturalized as sectional places of plastic waste exchange. Inhabitants of Des Moines gather here and drop their plastic waste to be collected, processed, and transported along the network for construction.
Utilizing c02 direct air capture fans dispersed on our infinite facade, our imagined future aims to not only cut down on our emissions but to capture them and displace the gas into both our constructed concrete and into its natural form underground.
Utilizing old 3d prints made from pla plastic, we modeled the effects of plastic casted into concrete structural elements.
column one 5% plastic aggregate 95% concrete column two 35% plastic aggregate 65% concrete
We casted a series of eight columns, with each set of two containing a different ratio of concrete to plastic aggregate.
column three 65% plastic aggregate 35% concrete
These models proved helpful in beginning to understand the new proposed labor process , and the aesthetic qualities it can exhibit.
column four 75% plastic aggregate 25% concrete
These column experiments serve as storage devices for our past creative endeavors; therefore mirroring the large scale use seen in the new excess. Our waste could become stored in our new future architectures.

3d printed ceramics intro to digital fabrication fall 2019
Utilizing the potterbot, a clay 3d printer, Lauren stokes and I investiagted the effects of different shaped extrusion nozzles on the resolution of a parametric vase. Per vase, there are zero computable variables changed, and only physical variables. The “experiment consists of three sizes and shapes of nozzles: three mm, four mm, and five mm diameters as well as star, triangle, and circle extrusion shapes. The purpose of our experiment was to see how variables that are excluded affect the output of a vase.
By not changing g-code variables-layer height, size of the vase, vase pattern, etc.-- we are able to see a result that included some failures, but also deem the importance of the g-code and its variables per print method, as very high. in collaboration w/ lauren stokes instructor | shelby doyle

Furthering my use of the potterbot, I wanted to explore the idea of using printed clay as formwork for a concrete pour. The possibilities in 3d printed clay give a wide range of exciting parametric forms, which in turn could yield forms in concrete unable to be realized with regular formwork. After being used, the clay can be collected, rehydrated and rused to create new formwork.
Once printed, I surrounded the molds with fine sand to equal the pressure of the concrete being poured into them. Once hardened, the final result was revealed by simply cracking the mold with a small hammer. honors project

post digital ocean array student exhibition spring 2019
Post digital ocean array is a digitally fabricated object showcased in the Post Digital Environments student exhibition. Post Digital emerged as a method of drawing that rejects realistic rendering techniques, often embodying digital collage. Renderings assume the language of photography, aspiring towards images of the real world.
The 4’ x 4’ 3d printed object imagines an infinite landscape of these tiles, soon overpowering and layering over the existing nature. It begins to question the role of human’s in climate change and habitat rehabilitation. instructor | leslie forehand
Inspired by the Chesapeake Bay’s declining oyster population I digitally modeled an underwater landscape of concrete substrate tiles, creating an artificial underwater reef environment to promote the growth in oyster growth in the bay.

the water tower culture of conservation in san francisco fall 2019
San Francisco, and most of California, suffers from an ongoing drought that was declared a state of emergency in 2015. This project responds to this issue as a mixeduse housing project that serves as the center of an urban sized desalination system. Our proposal de-centralizes the desalination plant into a urban network of pipes that filter ocean water from the bay into fresh drinking water as it travels to Nob Hill. The water is stored in our architecture and distributed throughout the city. The city also faces a large homeless population, currently handled by shoving people into large warehouse - like shelter spaces.
Throughout our selected precedent observations, we have looked at how architecture can facilitate rehabilitation by having a de-emphasis on private spaces in favor of community social spaces. An on site trade school focusing on the reuse of materials would teach the residents marketable skills and encourage green practices. This project serves as a monument to a future that could facilitate the areas current problems.. in collaboration w/ cyle king instructor | leslie forehand location | san francisco, california
