PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear JSU Family, Since our last publication of The Jacksonian, there have been many exciting moments and milestones for Jackson State University. I am grateful to share that we are experiencing new levels of success as we work together to elevate “Thee I Love” to higher heights. As fellow alumni and supporters, you can attest to the phenomenon that the HBCU experience is unparalleled and unmatched in providing a nurturing environment for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In this HBCU Edition of the Jacksonian, we highlight recent JSU accomplishments contributing to the tenants that make HBCUs unique. In September, we unveiled the JSU Elevate Strategic Plan, which embodies our vision to take JSU to new zeniths as we produce more distinguished scholars, global leaders and community servants. We are invested in our students’ academic success. Moreover, we have a game plan to enhance every facet of their college experience, from exploring cutting-edge research and improving the sustainability of our campus resources to supporting our scholars to graduate on time and on budget. This bold, innovative plan was spearheaded by a cross-disciplinary committee of faculty, staff, students and administrators and focuses our efforts on six institutional goals: Student Success, Academic Prominence, Research Excellence, Athletic Prowess, through enhanced program support, Improve Campus Aesthetics and Sustainability, and Improve the Campus Culture and Enhance the JSU brand. I’d like to thank Dr. Sheila Porterfield, associate dean of the College of Business, for leading this outstanding effort. I am pleased to announce the successful decennial review of our accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The reaffirmation of Jackson State University’s accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and staff staying true to our mission of providing quality teaching, research and service to diverse populations of students. The next decennial review is scheduled to occur in 2031. Also, JSU has received reaffirmation of our “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” based on the latest evaluation by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. During the past fiscal year, the Division of Research and Economic Development garnered $54.4 million in research awards, including more than $11 million from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities, to establish the RCMI Center for Health Disparities Research. The 2021
reaffirmation reflects the university’s commitment to elevate its research and empower academic excellence and outreach as part of our mission to positively impact the community. Faculty and staff continue to excel and elevate the JSU brand above and beyond their JSU roles: Dr. Roderick Little, JSU director of bands, was featured in the Dockers brand storytelling series “Recognize.” Dr. Pamala Heard, director of Honors Student Services and Activities, was selected as the 2021 Laura Taddeucci Downs National Advisor of the Year by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Dr. Alisa L. Mosley, our provost, has been selected to join a class of 22 outstanding provosts to participate in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities 2021–22 cohort of the Student Success Institute for Provosts. Dr. Sadik Khan, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded a CAREER Award of $539,710 from the National Science Foundation to advance the study and use of vetiver grass for preventing slopes from failing. Our alumni continue to roar fiercely in their respective careers: Damian Murray was named a 2023 Schwarzman Scholar and will pursue a master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University. Felicia Neal Daniel was named the chief financial officer at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Brigadier General Donna R. Williams was inducted into the U.S. Army ROTC Hall of Fame, and Dr. Charlotte P. Morris was named the ninth president of Tuskegee University. Finally, I encourage all of our friends and advocates to continue to invest in Jackson State University. We are proud to be ranked as a U.S. News and World Report Top 20 HBCU. However, we are destined to break the Top 10 with your support. The alumni giving rate is a big component of how institutions are ranked. Regardless of the size of the gift, counting you as an active contributor to our annual role of donors would greatly enhance our national ranking and improve our ability to continue challenging minds and changing lives.
Sincerely,
Thomas K. Hudson, Class of 1999 12th President

JSUNAA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Salutations my fellow Jacksonians, Have you been in the blue wave or watching from the sidelines? The renaissance being seen in the country for students to attend HBCUs for the quality education and global cultural experience, is the environment JSU has provided since 1877. As alumni of Jackson State University (JSU), we have always known, but now the world gets to see, the academic rigor of our programs, the diversity of thought with our students, the majestic choreography of THEE Sonic Boom (baddest Band in the land), the dominance and pride in multiple sports arenas (we play to win), the support of the largest fan base of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (record breaking attendance of almost 60,000), and THEE sense of family provided by our institution. “Thee I Love” is on the minds and lips of the country. JSU was the first HBCU to offer a degree in meteorology, and graduate Vivian Brown, the first African American female on the Weather Channel (30% of the U.S. Black meteorologist are from JSU). U.S. News and World Report notes JSU as one of the Top Schools for Engineering. Go Tigers! Women’s Basketball SWAC Championship− thank you Coach Reid! Women’s Volleyball SWAC Championship− thank you Coach Washington! Men’s Baseball Ranked #1− thank you Coach Johnson! Men’s Basketball− thank you Coach Brent! Football wins in the Orange Blossom Classic, Southern Heritage Classic, Soul Bowl and SWAC Championship, and secures the #1 recruit in the country− thank you Coach Prime! JSU Family, you are amazing! OVID SUALTIES:
Medical doctor wages war against hesitancy, myths to save lives By L.A. Warren
fter nearly 11,000 COVID-19 deaths in Mississippi, Dr. Justin Turner pleads with Jackson area communities and medical patients to listen to science about life-saving vaccinations. “Folks say they don’t trust the pharmaceutical industry because it’s just trying to make money… They say, ‘I’m going to just trust God.’ So, I ask them, ‘Why are you seeking refills on diabetic medicine or your blood pressure medicine? Does that mean you don’t trust God with diabetes and hypertension?’ I remind them that the same God who provided scientists with the tools to make their other meds is the same God who provided a Black scientist, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, with the tools to make vaccines,” said Turner, a physician. The 40-year-old Jackson State University alumnus is a 2003 graduate who majored in chemistry with a minor in biology. He graduated from Meharry Medical College in 2008, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2011 and operates TurnerCare LLC, a medical clinic in Jackson. Turner’s journey to serve humankind began at a career fair at Port Gibson Middle School, where he met an African American physician. He also was inspired by his late grandfather, a civil rights activist. Early during the COVID-19 pandemic, Turner, a Natchez native, joined forces with local and state leaders and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). He’s among experts that include
Dr. Thomas Dobbs, state health officer; Dr. Victor Sutton, director of Preventive Health and Health Equity at MSDH; and Dr. Claude Brunson, executive director of the Mississippi State Medical Association, who participated in town halls and other forums to educate the public about the coronavirus. Turner served on task forces with the city of Jackson and the Mississippi State Medical Association and appealed to the governor and challenged state leaders to act more aggressively to stem infections and deaths. “COVID-19 didn’t start health disparities. It only exposed how much health injustice exists,” Turner said. He intoned the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said that “of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” Turner said he experienced many emotions when he first learned that more than 70 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Mississippi occurred among Blacks. “I went from sadness to anger to frustration,” he said. “Too many Blacks told me they were being denied testing for COVID-19 as well as other issues.” Today, the death rate among Blacks in Mississippi is less than 30 percent, and Turner credits HBCUs such as JSU, faith leaders and the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus for the improved access to information, testing and treatment. “Over 40 percent of Blacks in Mississippi are now fully vaccinated compared to about 31 percent in the

country. Vaccination rates are up; deaths are down. Now, those numbers are more consistent with our population,” he said. COVID-19 vaccines are different from the Tuskegee syphilis experiment decades ago that resulted in distrust of the medical community by people of color, Turner said. “With Tuskegee, resources were withheld. With COVID-19, resources are free and more available. Blacks are not being told to get to the back of the line while the rest of America get their vaccines first.” Because the virus can be lethal, Turner chides those who take it lightly.
“I fight so hard to change the attitudes of Blacks relating to the vaccine because many just don’t know any better. In this age of modern technology people are quick to believe just about anything because it’s on the internet.” He knows what it’s like to lose someone from COVID-19. He cried after he learned a patient he had spoken with about getting vaccinated died. “I couldn’t believe it after having provided her so many ways to get the vaccine. She had trusted me for over 10 years with her health. She’d never questioned the potential side effects of her heart meds or diabetic meds, but this was different. The distrust that she and so many others share speaks to another issue we collectively must address better in our nation,” Turner said.

Turner’s grief over that death is compounded by the fear he has seen in hospitalized patients. “I’m looking into the eyes of COVID-19 patients as they are about to be intubated, knowing this may be the last time they open their eyes again. It’s not just people in their 70s and 60s, but people in their 40s and 30s,” he said. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the majority of the people dying, hospitalized or having severe consequences are unvaccinated, Turner said. Many patients suffering from COVID-19 have a change of heart and no longer question the efficacy of the vaccine. “They want anything and everything that can help,” he said. Mississippi’s vaccination rate is only about 50 percent, said Turner, who is still concerned about it.“If we don’t have enough people vaccinated, it’s a recipe for more mutations.” Turner’s world is hectic as he balances his career and personal life. He decompresses by watching his favorite sports teams, the Tennessee Titans and the Los Angeles Lakers, but spending time with his wife, Elisha, and daughters Layla, 12, and Leah, 4, is what he enjoys the most. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Turner said there’s a way forward. “To instill confidence, we must be the change we want to see. Many leaders have stepped up by getting vaccinated publicly. I wouldn’t want anyone to do anything they didn’t see me do. We must meet people where they are. We must acknowledge people’s concerns whether we feel they are justified or not,” he said. “We must let them know we still have work to do in the fight against systemic racism, but that’s a long-term issue. We need to be alive long enough to be able to continue that fight. We must act in the spirit of humanity. We’re Americans — not Democrat, Republican, Black, white or Hispanic. It’s not what we are but who we are.”

The Legacy of Sekou Smith Lives On By Kelsei Scott
Clement Gibson, a 2019 Jackson State University alumnus, gained real-world experience thanks to the 2021 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. For two weeks last August, Gibson edited press releases, worked alongside a social media manager and edited film, to name just some of the tasks that were part of the Sekou Smith Hawks Summer League Experience. “I got a chance to write a story about Skylar Mays, who plays for the Atlanta Hawks, that got published on NBA.com,” Gibson said. “That was cool getting my first authored published work.” Gibson was the first recipient of the internship that the Atlanta Hawks set up in memory of Sekou Smith, a JSU alumnus and longtime NBA.com reporter and television analyst who died Jan. 26, 2021 from COVID-19. The internship was open to journalism, broadcast or multi-media students from a Southwestern Athletic Conference university or college and provided for the cost of travel to Las Vegas as well as hotel, meals and incidentals. Born in West Africa and calling Minneapolis, Minnesota home, Gibson earned an associate degree from North Country Community College and another from Long Beach City College before attending JSU, where he earned a bachelor’s in mass communication with a focus on journalism. Enrolled in a master’s program at Columbia University, Gibson applied for the internship after a friend suggested it. He soon realized he shared several things in common with Smith. While at JSU, Gibson and several other students helped start an NBA podcast. “I remember trying to reach out to Sekou Smith so he could listen knowing he is a Jackson State alum, knowing he loves the NBA,” he said. “We were really trying to get it out to him so he could listen or maybe share it.”
During the internship, Gibson discovered additional similarities he shared with Smith. “I learned that he learned about JSU from an HBCU tour as well and that he came from a community college like myself, studied journalism at JSU like myself and was an editor-in-chief,” he said. “We walked very similar paths. When I found all of that out, it felt like it was meant to be.” Time management proved critical during the internship because of the full experience it offered, and the fact that Gibson was completing his master’s program at the time. “I was waking up earlier and staying up longer,” he said. “I still had to go do the internship all day and come back and study, take final exams and
do presentations.” Gibson is now focused in the short term on growing his video producing and writing skills and in the long-term looks for opportunities to give back to the institutions that helped develop his talents. “I know how hard it is being a community college student and then going from a community college to an HBCU and then to the Ivy League,” he said. “It was a hard, long journey. I definitely want to give back resources to make it easier for the next person, who travels a similar path.”

Ursula Debi and Kevin May
Over 30 years ago, Kevin and I met on the Plaza at Thee Jackson State University. I was a communicative disorders (speech language pathology) major and Kevin was a criminal justice major. I am a native of Natchez, Mississippi and Kevin is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. Our paths may not have crossed but thanks to JSU and the matchmaking of three close friends (Karen Cooke, Ray Davis and Nat Younger), we met. Shortly after meeting, Kevin and I knew we wanted to be together. I remember our long conversations when he would call me on the hall phone in Alexander. Yes, the communal hall phone! Later, Kevin and I established a weekly date night. I looked forward to him picking me up every Tuesday to go to dinner or just for a ride. We have managed to keep our date nights going after many years of being together. After we graduated from JSU, Kevin asked me to go for a reminiscent walk with him on the JSU Plaza. All along, he planned to take me to the very place we met and propose. I said, “Yes” and we have been inseparable! In fact, “Inseparable” by Natalie Cole is one of our favorite songs. I surprised Kevin by singing “Inseparable” to him during our wedding ceremony. Fast forward, nestled in Jackson, Mississippi, Kevin and I have been married for 28 years. We are the proud parents of three children, Kelsi, Kelli and Kevin. Kelsi, a 2018 graduate of JSU (communicative disorders) works as a speech therapist while enrolled in graduate school at Mississippi College. Kelli, a 2020 graduate of Millsaps College attends law school at Mississippi College. Our son, Kevin, a 2021 high school graduate, served as a ball boy for the JSU football team from third grade to his senior year. He attends JSU and is a freshman marketing major with a minor in business. We are absolutely overjoyed that our son is a running back on the historic JSU football team! Kevin and I are long-term supporters of all things JSU, especially the football team. We attend most of the away games and have not missed a JSU Home football game in 28 years. Truly, JSU football season is our favorite time of the year. During that time, we look forward to entertaining fellow JSU fans in our home, tailgating, enjoying Thee Sonic Boom of the South and of course, cheering

for our Tigers! Among many things, we are most thankful for the quality education we received at Thee Jackson State University and certainly, our everlasting love for one another.
DR. MALCOLM AND EMMA KERN BLACK
Emma and I met our first night on campus as freshmen at then Jackson College (Jackson State University) in August 1955. My cronies and I, who were graduates of Jim Hill High School in Jackson and played with The Duke Huddleston Band around the tri-state area and on a Saturday afternoon TV program believed
to be the first in Mississippi for blacks, went to the gymnasium and checked out the freshmen. Walking in the door presented us with a crowd circling and cheering a couple on the dance floor. I was encouraged to meet the female dancer described as wearing a gray dress. I discovered a young lady wearing a gray dress who piqued my interest as to why she was suddenly available, considering the attention she had just received. Without hesitation, I requested a dance that lasted until the blinking lights indicated the end of the social, at which time I walked her to the dormitory. The next day I discovered Emma, in the somewhat conservative gray Princess dress, was not Margaret, the dancer dressed in the gray, hot Carmen Jones attire. We learned we were both high school standouts, and we had several classes together. My admiration for Emma solidified when I visited her home during

the Christmas holiday and received a tour of all her family throughout Kosciusko and outlying areas. I met her parents, Jimmy and Manella Kern, and other family as the son of Henrietta and Rev. Fred B. Black, co-host of a Sunday morning radio broadcast with Rev. Newsom, of which Emma’s family were all patrons. My father also pastored St. Luther and Mt. Nebo Baptist Churches that attracted a number of JC students each Sunday. Emma’s mother, Manella, and sister, Louise, a former Miss Jackson College, and my parents were Jackson College alumni and they developed an ongoing camaraderie. Emma’s job in the library gave us a place to secretly chat during our initiation into Omega Ps Phi and Delta Sigma Theta, respectively. Emma received permission from her parents to spend holiday weekends with my family four blocks from the campus. Our marriage in 1959 at our parents’ home was highlighted by five guests and a half gallon of ice cream and a bag of vanilla wafers for the reception. Our delayed honeymoon consisted of weekends on our farm in Hermanville (Port Gibson), Mississippi and St. Louis, Missouri where Emma experienced morning sickness with twins: Karen, now a lawyer, and Varen, who entered broadcast journalism; they are JSU alumni, residing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Chicago, respectively. Other expeditions led us to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. After traveling domestically and internationally over the years, we now spend weekends with our granddaughter, Portia, a Florida A&M University alumna who teaches in Palm Beach County and is a doctoral student at the University of Florida. We continue to focus attention on JSU by funding the Dr. and Mrs. Malcolm and Emma Kern Black Endowed Scholarship, Honor Roll of Donors and other activities of the Development Foundation and Alumni Affairs.
De’Suan Dixon, Ph.D. and Laquala C. Dixon, Ph.D. De’Suan and I met while working at Jackson State University. I was the associate dean of students at the time and he was one of the men’s basketball coaches. We were both enrolled in JSU Ph.D. programs when we met. I inquired about him when I first arrived at JSU, but he was never informed until we started dating. Ironically, years later, a colleague who knew both of us felt we would be a “good match.” I attempted to avoid the matchmaker game. Then, De’Suan expressed interest to me directly and I was intrigued. We began dating and embraced the connection we made. We dated for a couple of years. In 2020,
we were scheduled to visit family out of town for the Fourth of July, but the trip was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. De’Suan suggested having a Zoom party with our family for the Fourth of July instead. I did not think anything of it. During the Zoom party, we danced and I did a spin as a part of my dance moves. When I turned back around, De’Suan was on one knee proposing to me with our immediate family watching and cheering us on from the computer screen. It was a beautiful surprise to have fireworks and a fiancé as a part of our Fourth of July celebration. We then confirmed a date to get married six months later. Unfortunately, our wedding was not what we imagined due to COVID. Our ceremony was officiated by our pastor, but we were unable to have loved ones present because of the necessary COVID safety protocols. Although COVID has been challenging, we have experienced endless blessings in the midst of adversity. De’Suan has three degrees from JSU and I have one; we both hold a doctorate from JSU. We are proud alumni contributing each day to make a difference in the lives of our students, while also being grateful for finding #JSULove. ONEJSU

The iconic Jackson State University marching band known as the Sonic Boom of the South and “the summa cum laude of bands” celebrated its 50th anniversary in front of almost 54,000 alumni, students and fans on Oct. 16, 2021. The band performed at the football game that drew record-breaking attendance, making it the largest homecoming crowd in the history of JSU. Roderick Little, Ph.D., director of bands at JSU, described the program with these words: Energetic, life changing and unique. “We have a swagger that other band programs

cannot imitate or emulate,” he said. “Our energy is second to none. “This great legacy certainly did not start with me. A lot of groundwork was laid prior to my tenure by many great men.” In the 1940s, at what was then Jackson College, under the leadership of Frederick D. Hall, the marching band consisted of about 20 members. The band program now has nearly 300 student members. Students recommended the band’s name, Sonic Boom of the South, in 1971. The band’s theme,
“Get Ready,” a Motown favorite, was selected in 1974 and three years later, the tiger run-on entrance was perfected. The marching band has performed in halftime appearances for NFL teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengal as well as on a television special for Motown’s 30th anniversary and for the 34th NAACP Image Awards. In January 2021, the Sonic Boom of the South entertained during inauguration celebrations for the President Joe Biden and Vice President

Kamala Harris. In November 2021, Pepsi featured its first ad highlighting the marching band in the 60-second spot, “The Halftime Game.” For Little, a great halftime performance is fulfilling, but his focus goes beyond that. “Our purpose is to educate young minds, assist with their musical growth and ensure that our students are being morphed into reputable citizens,” he said. “It’s not just about the music, marketing and pageantry. It’s about ensuring personal and professional growth. I want to create the same opportunities for my students that were created for me.” Former director of Bands Lewis Liddell, Ph.D., provided Little with a scholarship that afforded him an opportunity to be the first college graduate in his family. “Without that opportunity, I would not be who I am today,” Little said. “My goal is to manifest that energy into my students and make sure I am teaching them life lessons on how to be successful. I also remain committed to further evolve our band program.” Shirley Middleton, a former majorette and trained ballet dancer, introduced the idea of the majorettes dancing to popular music in 1970. Middleton, sponsor, and the majorettes met with then JSU President John A. Peoples and requested permission to “put down their batons.” Peoples agreed and the prancing legends were born. “The thrill of a thousand eyes,” were the words Jimmie James Jr., Ph.D., spoke
at the onset of the “Prancing Jaycettes” in 1971. The dancing group was initially named the “Prancing Jaycettes.” In 1982, the Prancing Jaycettes organization officially changed the name to Prancing J-Settes because of a name conflict with a local organization known as the Jackson Jaycees/Jaycettes. Ashley Crowley, a former dance member and director of the Prancing J-Settes, describes the dancers as the face of the band. “They are the eye-candy directly behind the drum majors,” she said. During each performance, the announcer enthusiastically introduces the dance team to the crowd by saying, “The thrill of a billion eyes.” The team’s dance style combines “jazz, funk, hip-hop, African and acrobatic moves,” Crowley said, noting that the goal is to produce a wow factor during each performance. During the 2021 homecoming celebration, many alumnae J-Settes returned to perform. “The level of talent, love and respect I witnessed from former and current J-Settes that day was phenomenal,” Crowley said. “The show visually presented the evolution of the J-Settes and was truly a thrill to witness.”

Hilliard Lackey first stepped foot on the campus of Jackson State University to take the ACT on Aug. 5, 1961. The visit was the culmination of years of growing up in the Mississippi Delta town of Marks, longing to attend the state’s only public HBCU. The impression was immediate. All around the yard, Lackey saw “Black folks all dressed up and they weren’t going to church or a funeral” — and more. “I could see all the splendor of Jackson State,” said Lackey, an alumnus, who is now a visiting professor in Urban Higher Education in Jackson State’s Executive Ph.D. program. “I was infatuated.” Fast forward 60 years, and the rest of the nation is getting to see some of what Lackey saw on that fateful day. It’s been a whirlwind year at Jackson State, and that’s not counting the imposition of a global pandemic, the hire of a high-profile head football coach or the installation of a new president. Check the receipts: U.S. News and World Report recently named Jackson State to its list of top 20 HBCUs. PepsiCo tapped the school’s acclaimed band, The Sonic Boom of the South, to collaborate with another powerhouse band, Florida A&M University’s The
Marching 100, for a national TV commercial spot. JSU’s academic programs are accredited for the next ten years thanks to the stamp of approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, football games are packed (nearly 53,000 fans — a record — watched the Tigers maul the Alabama State Hornets at last year’s homecoming game), enrollment is up 2.3 percent and financial giving has increased for the the school, including $5 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds for the creation of a public health partnership with Mississippi College and $1 million from FedEx to support educational and employment initiatives. Nestled near the city’s center, the university historically is “the Queen Bee for the African-American in the state of Mississippi,” Lackey said. Now, the Jackson State brand stretches beyond its boundaries of Prentiss and Dalton streets, beyond the Mississippi state line and into households across the country. “It has exploded and, so, captivated,” Lackey said. The wave of blue and white pride is palatable in Jackson and catching on elsewhere, said D’Andra Orey, a professor of political science at JSU. “It’s all eyes on Thee,” said Orey, referencing the school’s alma mater, “Jackson Fair.” Lackey, Orey and other Jacksonian administrators

and faculty say the naming in September of Deion Sanders — a two-time NFL Super Bowl champion and eight-time Pro Bowl veteran — as head football coach was a tremendous push into the national spotlight. In his short time on campus, Sanders — better known as Coach Prime — has collected prestigious accolades, including being named
SWAC Coach of the Year and leading the Tigers in December to their first SWAC Championship since 2007. That win helped Jackson State cinch an appearance with South Carolina State University later that month at the Cricket Celebration Bowl, the team’s first shot at a national title since 1996. Sanders’ star power brought a healthy scrutiny to Jackson State, said Ebony Lumumba, associate professor of English and department chair at JSU. “One of the primary things he’s accomplished for us is just awareness,” she said. “We already knew our capacity for excellence. So, what Coach Prime’s presence has done is just alert other people who may not be as familiar with our reality as to who we are and who we’ve always been. We already kind of knew we were kind of special; now everyone else gets let in on that secret.” Sanders uses social media to tell Jackson State’s story to potential athletes but it’s also effective with other audiences, Lackey said. “He tells football prospects on his Twitter ‘look we have passion about life, passion about education, passion about athletics — there’s passion here, son, that you won’t find nowhere else,’” he said. “I read his tweets just to be reminded how others perceive us.” The Sanders effect is spilling off campus and into

the city, with a Visit Jackson official estimating the buzz generated by Jackson State’s football team amounts to a $30 million economic impact for the city. There’s even more ahead for Jackson State. In a recent interview on Joe Madison’s “The Black Eagle” show on Sirius XM, JSU President Thomas K. Hudson alluded that the university could receive some of the $10 billion set aside specifically for HBCUs in the landmark Build Back Better bill. Almost half of that money is earmarked for campus improvement projects including enhancing Wi-Fi capabilities, upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and renovating residence halls, Hudson said. “It’s going to be a real game changer for us and other HBCUs and we really look forward to accessing the resources coming (from the legislation),” he said. “It’s going to be very important.” Hudson and faculty members say the hype and related publicity surrounding Sanders and the football team means that Jackson State is garnering the attention of a group perhaps even more important than the national media – students. Looking at enrollment trends, it appears the hype surrounding Jackson State is paying off already with a surge of a new generation of Jacksonians. According to university officials, Jackson State saw a 27 percent rise in its 2021 first-time freshmen class. While the football program is a major draw, Orey said the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor also could have contributed to the jump in numbers. Those tragic events could have served as an impetus for students to apply to HBCUs because of their reputations as safe spaces for Black people, he said. Whereas the university may not have had an abundance of resources, that has not prevented Jackson State from preparing its students to compete with their peers across the country. For example, 17 Jackson State political science graduates in the last 12 years have been admitted to prestigious PhD programs at Purdue, Michigan State, and other universities, Orey said. A huge contingent matriculated into top law schools such as Harvard and New York University, he said. Jackson State’s best asset really is its students, said Orey, who has taught at the university since 2008. “These students are phenomenal,” he said. “They just need a little nudge and they can compete with the best of them.” Using Build Back Better dollars to repair and
extend the life of campus buildings allows Jackson State to provide a great place for students to learn and live, Hudson said. “While we’ve done a good job of trying to keep what we have, HBCUs typically do lag behind your larger majority institutions when it come to the physical plant,” he said. “So, it’s very important we get this boost…that allows us to clear that deferred maintenance and really invest in our campus infrastructure.” Jackson State is poised to take a bow thanks to the foundation built in the 20th century by visionary leaders such as former President John Peoples Jr., Lumumba said. “What it did is cement Jackson State as a fixture…this sort of epicenter for academic excellence and cultural expression in the minds of all these different individuals and different communities,” she said. “So what they’ve done is actually foster a new generation of Jacksonians who are excited to come here and want to be here because they are aware of this rich legacy.” Jackson State’s success is boon to the overall HBCU narrative because, “if they know about one of us that opens the door to increase awareness about all of us,” Lumumba said. Lumumba, a Spellman College graduate, said all HBCUs share a common strain regarding the reason for their founding. Beyond that, the schools are very diverse and Jackson State’s story is intertwined with Mississippi’s capital. “If you’re going to talk about the history of this nation — the history of the South — if you’re going to talk about the shifts and movements and changes across history, then you’ve got to speak of a place like Jackson State that is in the center of the capital city of Mississippi that has undergone all these really drastic cultural and social changes that we talk about when we talk about the American South,” Lumumba said. “When we talk about Mississippi, Jackson State has been at the center of that due to location alone.” Lumumba and others agree that events taking place now will springboard Jackson State into a bright future. “It’s another chapter of greatness,” Orey said. “It’s the culture. Once you get down here and get an idea of what things are like, there’s no turning back. It’s a beautiful campus. Hudson concurred. “Jackson State is a great place to learn,” he said, “and it’s a great place to really fulfill your dreams.”

great leader is a strategic thinker, innovative, ethical, civicminded and visionary. A great leader of a historically black college or university must also possess empathy and cultural sensitivity plus excellent listening and team building skills. When Walter Brown, Ed.D., joined Jackson State University as associate professor and director of the Executive Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education, his charge was to build leaders who could step into the role of president or senior administrator at any higher education institution, but especially at HBCUs. The result of Brown’s work is a two-year accelerated doctoral program that even during the COVID-19 global pandemic has a waitlist of candidates vying for the 20 annual slots. “This program will either give you pause based on its complexities or it will validate your desire to be a president,” said Brown, who a decade ago was hired by Joseph Stevenson, Ph.D., founder of the program. Critics doubted a doctorate could be achieved in two years when the program was established in 2004. Using the University of Pennsylvania cohort model, Jackson State proved them wrong and curated a strong program. “The rigor increases every year and staying on course will depend on the quality of a student’s research,” said Brown, who built a similar program at George Washington University. “If the document isn’t where it should be, it takes longer to graduate. “We also know that life happens, promotions occur, responsibilities shift
and that can be a contributing factor to how long it takes to complete the program.” The program has produced numerous deans and cabinet-level vice presidents as well as 10 presidents, including Clark Atlanta University President George T. French, Ph.D., Cohort 3. Although he already had a law degree and his dream role as university president, French wanted a doctorate to solidify his credentials as an academician. He found the program insightful from his perspective as a university president. “It’s one thing to sit in a classroom, to sit in lectures and get some idea of what a college presidency actually looks like and have a conversation, and it’s another to be actually performing as a president at the same time,” French said. “For me, it made it much more effective because I wasn’t just thinking ‘theory,’ but I was thinking ‘practice’ every day.” French originally planned to attend the University of Pennsylvania’s doctoral program when Stevenson recruited him directly through another mentor, Art Thomas, president emeritus of Central State University. “Dr. Stevenson had patterned the JSU program on the University of Pennsylvania program and I felt that it couldn’t get any better,” French said. “The actual structure and the construct of the program was excellent, but faculty like Dr. Neari Warner, Dr. Walter Brown and others made all the difference in the world.” Alisa Mosely, Ph.D., who currently serves as Jackson State’s senior vice president and provost for academic affairs, was a founding faculty member of the program.

narrative on what leaders at our institutions need to be able to live up to in this current climate,” she said. “There are a lot of changes going on at universities now, especially with the pandemic. You do need more agile leaders who are able to respond to a number of problems and concerns that universities may face.” Higher education programs at other universities are practitioner-oriented, but the Jackson State program includes a research component, Mosely said. “That is very helpful for those who want to be provosts, presidents and VPs because they really need to understand the pathways that their employees may go through. Understanding how all the university works together is what this program is so good about,” Mosely said. Working professionals who are thriving in their existing fields find the program attractive. EPh.D. cohort 18 member Donald Comer serves as staff vice president for Decision Science and Analytics at FedEx in Memphis. He leads HBCUs as an officer of the board of trustees for two institutions: chairman at Stillman College and second vice chair at Lemoyne Owens College. He also serves as chairman of the board of directors for the National Black MBA Association. After receiving his undergraduate and master’s degrees at predominantly white institutions, Comer wanted to earn his Ph.D. at an HBCU. “My initial motivation was to integrate my years of experience in corporate America and running business processes with critical thinking and innovation and blend that with an impact in higher ed,” said Comer. The program provided valuable context for Comer’s work as a board member and a meaningful experience. “It’s a much different thing when you are sitting in the class with other experienced individuals, and it’s not just the professor up front lecturing to you that’s adding to your learning. It’s having those sitting around you that add practical knowledge to the theory that’s being taught that helps it to become more ingrained and a deeper, richer experience,” Comer said. Cohort 8 member Lisa Long was completing her second year of the program when she was promoted to the role of provost/vice president of academic affairs at Talladega College in Alabama. With 20 years of experience working at the state’s oldest HBCU, Long said pursuing her terminal degree was a personal career goal. Before enrolling at JSU, Long interviewed faculty and staff regarding the program, process, resources available and program success rate. “I was in search of a university that would provide me flexibility and a healthy balance to meet my educational needs while continuing my career at Talladega,” Long said. The education Long received at Jackson State gave her confidence in her ability to serve as Talladega’s provost and, most recently, as acting president.

She hopes her journey will encourage others to pursue a doctorate and join the higher education community, which needs diverse leaders. “There is a significant demand for more women and African American women to serve at this level and in the near future, I hope to see diverse representation among executive staff across multiple sectors of education,” Long said.

How has being Miss JSU changed your life? My life has changed for the better! The opportunities that I’ve been awarded and the experience that has been created for me are irreplaceable. As the 82nd Miss JSU, I have reaped many social and emotional benefits. The community has been very supportive of me and my reign. Whenever I need help with a service initiative, I get support from JSU fans around the nation. I go out in public, and people recognize me, or when I’m in my crown and sash, people want to take pictures with me or have their kids take pictures. It’s very humbling and fulfilling to witness. What do you hope people remember about your leadership? At the end of my reign, I hope that people remember me as relatable. As an HBCU Queen, there can be pressure to feel like you always have to be perfect. While I make sure to maintain the high standards that come with my position, I also make sure to always present my authentic self. At the end of it all, I hope everyone I encountered remembers me as being the queen they were able to see themselves in. How has JSU shaped you as a person? When I came to JSU in August 2018, I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I was ready to tackle whatever was about to come my way, whether good or bad. I have grown to be more determined, more polished and more knowledgeable through my matriculation. I got the full HBCU experience while here at JSU, and I am now able to take what I learned and experienced and use it to make an impact out in the real world. What are your future aspirations, and why? After graduating, I plan to enter the workforce. I have a concentration in integrated marketing communications and am passionate about public relations. I have narrowed my top three locations down to staying in Jackson or relocating to Louisiana or Tennessee. I hope to be able to offer the skills and services I have to others by creating my own independent PR firm as well. What is your platform? My platform is C. O. L. E World. Cole is a play on my last name, and Hip-Hop artist J. Cole’s signature phrase, “Cole World,” stands for consistency, opportunity and lasting excellence. I want to provide my peers with consistent community service and programming opportunities while leaving my own special legacy. Why is mentorship important? Mentorship is an underrated part of the collegiate journey. Having a mentor can help you in so many ways. A mentor can bring you professional development opportunities, offer insight on different coursework, and sometimes you just need to vent. A mentor can help you with that as well. It’s easy to think that we know it all, but it is important to be a life-long learner. Mentorship is a life-long connection.

a leap of faith in running for Mister JSU to guarantee those ideas stood firm in the eyes of the student body.
What impact did JSU have on you becoming the 76th SGA president? JSU gave me the confidence and ambition to dream and pursue a position like Student Government Association President. I’ve experienced rigorous coursework, leadership roles, community service, and a lot of SGA and CAB events Jackson State. This has instilled characteristics such as leadership, responsibility, ultimately pushing me to be my best self. This is just one of the many amazing opportunities JSU has afforded me. Before Jackson State, I was somewhat shy and definitely afraid to speak up for myself. JSU has forced me outside of my comfort zone.
What are your plans after graduation? My plans post-graduation are to remain at Jackson State University and attain my Master’s of Science with an emphasis in Sports Management. Right now, I am a football recruiter for the team. Long term, I plan to establish a sports agency and serve as CEO. My target audience will be HBCU athletes or athletes of color to ensure their representation in the NFL and NBA. What do you want people to remember about your leadership? I want people to remember me as inspirational, determined and persistent in seeking nothing less than a high standard of excellence. What is your platform? My platform is T.I.M.E., which stands for Trailblazers with vision, Innovative thinkers, Mentors for our youth and Eager leaders for humanity. The goal of my platform is to inform my peers that T.I.M.E is the greatest currency known to man, so use it wisely. Success will present itself when one has a vision, plan and all means to execute. What do you like most about attending JSU? JSU is really like my second home outside of Chicago. It is very family-oriented. The various bonds and connections that I have made throughout my matriculation have shaped me into who I am today.

Jackson State University has equipped me with all the tools to succeed in the world after college and the confidence to chase my biggest dreams. My gratitude for this university will allow me to do nothing less than support my school as an alumna, share my positive experiences, and prayerfully continue the family legacy of students to attend and graduate from Jackson State University in future years. Describe your leadership experience during your tenure as SGA president. I am so grateful for my experience as a student leader at JSU. Serving as SGA president has been both fulfilling and challenging but ultimately well worth it. The excitement and anticipation around being back on campus has really helped boost student morale. As a result, my tenure has been less complicated. I also have an amazing administration and team of advisors that make my life a whole lot easier. My advisors understand I am a student first so they make juggling everything else a breeze.

Communications tell U.S. audience how Mississippi attacked COVID-19 University Communications recently represented the College of Health Sciences at the annual conference of the American Public Health Association in Denver, Colorado. They delivered a presentation about the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic in areas of Mississippi and touted the success of town halls, along with traditional and digital marketing. Tangelia Kelly, Ph.D., assistant marketing director, and L.A. Warren, former media relations specialist, facilitated a roundtable discussion on the topic of “Town Halls Help Change African Americans’ Behaviors for Reducing COVID-19 Infections in Hard-hit Central Mississippi.” Throughout the year, Kelly and Warren assisted health sciences by promoting safety and vaccinations to the public through a campaign titled “It’s Not Over Yet.” Kelly told the audience that “changing the behavior of others is not an easy task. It takes education and building trust. JSU emphasized the importance of wearing face coverings, social distancing, handwashing, testing and other ways to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. Our campaign was a mix of traditional and digital marketing tactics that included billboards, commercials, radio spots, a landing web page and a digital campaign consisting of display ads and paid social ads.” Warren said, “Because of greater knowledge absorbed from the town halls, people have made better decisions. Since early this year, JSU has provided more than 2,000 doses of Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines to students, faculty, staff and community members.” He credited a long-term, ongoing partnership with the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center, which administers free vaccinations weekly on campus at One University Place, Suite 6, 1100 John R. Kellogg Foundation provided a $700,000 grant to Jackson State University’s College of Health Sciences, which is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, to launch the first phase of its Digital Tele-Health Hub (DTH) that will address historical health disparities among African Americans. The coronavirus pandemic and its variants have raised the topics of social injustice and health inequity to the top of the agenda for many businesses and governments. Girmay Berhie, Ph.D., principal investigator and dean of the College of Health Sciences, said the future looks bright for digital telehealth. “Jackson State University is uniquely positioned to design, implement

and scale DTH solutions. It has the potential to reduce costs, increase access, improve health outcomes and reshape how African Americans interact with healthcare systems and providers.” The project is in collaboration with the city of Jackson, the World Economic Forum and the Scripps Research Translational Institute. Mario Azevedo, Ph.D., professor in JSU’s College of Liberal Arts, and Fidelis Ikem, Ph.D., dean of JSU’s College of Business, are co-principal investigators of the project.

JSU relaunches Orff Schulwerk certification course Jackson State University’s Department of Music relaunched the Orff Schulwerk Certification Course for the 2021-2022 academic year. Described as a teaching model for optimal learning in 21st Century classrooms, the course uses imitation, experimentation and personal expression to mold students into confident life-long musicians and creative problem solvers. JSU is the only HBCU to offer the certification program, and the relaunch marked the 25th Anniversary of the course offered at JSU. Ramon Jackson, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of music, was pivotal in reestablishing the course at JSU. “It offers educators a foundation for teaching music through varied activities. So this gives students at Jackson State an opportunity to learn how to approach music and be entertained while learning,” he said. “It also gives teachers already in the profession the opportunity to enhance or gain more knowledge that they can take back to their classrooms.”
Jackson State University recipient of $300K grant from The Propel Center, aims to promote student success in entertainment Jackson State University was awarded a $300,000 arts and entertainment grant from The Propel Center and Apple to enable its music students to explore aspirations and develop careers in the music industry. Students from JSU’s music department will be selected to participate in the Cortez Bryant Foundation’s Creative Leadership for the Music Industry Professional Pipeline Program, where they will be immersed in co-curricular activities. Entertainment mogul Cortez Bryant is in his second year of teaching a Careers in Music course at his alma mater JSU. He is looking to establish a
music business school at the university in the future. For now, the creative leadership program is a way to further expose students to the outer and inner workings of the industry. “This grant is really making a difference for HBCU youth through music and supporting the next generation of Black entertainment executives and artists. We are honored that they chose the Cortez Bryant Foundation and Jackson State University,” he shares.

Rhea Williams-Bishop, Ph.D., is director of Mississippi and New Orleans Programming at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan. In this role, she is responsible for leadership and vision in program conceptualization, design, planning, management, coordination, communication, evaluation, policy and learning of grantmaking in Mississippi and New Orleans. As a small child, she remembers visiting Jackson State University basketball and football games with her siblings and parents. Her father, Oga Gerone Williams is an alumnus and he also played basketball at Jackson State in the 60’s. While a senior in high school, WilliamsBishop was recruited to attend JSU by the late Maria Louisa Alvarez Harvey, Ph.D., a former professor and associate dean of the W.E.B. Du Bios Honors College. “I was offered a full scholarship to JSU and the rest is history,” Williams-Bishop said. Her cumulative experiences as a college student are the driving force to why she and her husband, consistently give financial contributions to JSU. “I am committed to Jackson State because the university saw my potential, offered me the opportunity to pursue a college degree
debt-free, and help me develop my skills beyond what I could ever imagine,” says WilliamsBishop. “Caring, committed and knowledgeable professors and administrators provided me with guidance while (also) providing patience and care that was so special. They not only pushed us to excel but willed us to success.” The alumna shares that JSU provided her with an extended family, life-long friendships, multiple degrees and the love of her life and soul mate, Beverly “Bev” V. Bishop, II. The husband and wife met while attending the HBCU. “Finally, to top it all off, all of my sisters and sisters-in-love, children and mother and fatherin-love and dad are all JSU alums. My youngest son is currently a third-year student,” exclaims Williams-Bishop. She emphasizes that JSU provided her with a wealth of knowledge and opportunities, and giving back is “the least she can do.” Williams-Bishop says she is committed to paying it forward so other deserving students can have the same type of meaningful experience that will positively impact their lives. During her tenure as a student, WilliamsBishop was a President’s and Dean’s list scholar, Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship recipient, first-alternate to Miss JSU, Miss Alpha Phi Alpha, Miss Freshman and a member of the Delta Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was also a part of the Honors College program. Overall, Williams-Bishop has donated $37,875.00 to JSU through outright gifts and matches from her company. She and her husband have given a total of $80,485. She's also instrumental in JSU receiving over $191,900 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in matching gifts.

C. Jerome Brown is the executive vice
president and chief community officer at The First Bank in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Brown’s journey to Jackson State University began with his family. His uncle and aunt, William and Rejohnna Brown, both Alcorn State University alumni, lived in Jackson. Brown’s aunt was a professor in the College of Education and Human Development at JSU. Brown’s family visited Jackson regularly for events and holidays. He recalls receiving JSU apparel for Christmas and birthday gifts, attending on-campus events and summer camps. As a Hattiesburg native, Brown always viewed attending the University of Southern Mississippi as an extension of high school. For that reason, he aspired to attend a college or university outside of Hattiesburg. Brown made his decision to enroll in Jackson State after attending a homecoming game in 1990. He received a scholarship from the JSU National Alumni Association’s Hattiesburg chapter. As a JSU student, Brown remembers being positively influenced by several people, especially students in leadership positions. “I admired my peers who were able to properly balance student leadership roles and academics,” Brown said.
As a freshman, he was elected senator for the Student Government Association (SGA) Board. Lacking discipline, Brown was unable to balance his social life, academics and the student leadership role. Because of that, he was unable to serve in another SGA leadership position during his student tenure. During Brown’s junior year, he was selected to chair the American Marketing Association (AMA) Week. As a marketing major and student member of AMA, he was elated to welcome business executives to campus. During AMA Week, executives hosted seminars, shared company and personal experiences with students and offered internships. “My grades did not warrant an immediate offer,” Brown said. “Disappointed, I focused on my academic efforts so I could receive an offer the following year.” During his senior year, a similar seminar occurred on-campus and executives from McRae’s department store offered him a job. During the week, he worked four-hour shifts in sales audit. Brown was later offered an opportunity with McRae’s management training program but he declined it because he realized he didn’t like working in retail. Before his current role at The First Bank, Brown worked in marketing sales. While providing one of his clients with top-tier customer service, he was offered a job. Brown’s client was the chief executive officer at The First Bank. “I had no interest in the banking industry,” Brown said. “This was probably due to the lack of diversity in the banking and finance industry.” “He informed me that I had a good job but he could provide me with a career,” Brown recalls. “That statement resonated with my spirit. I wasn’t offered internships and jobs as a student so taking this opportunity was a leap of faith. It was also me trusting God’s timing for a career.” Brown’s advice for students is to choose a mentor and learn about his or her career and industry. “It is important for students to know that service is the rent paid for your room here on Earth,” he said. “Always pay it forward because others are watching.” As a JSU alumnus, Brown has contributed over $100,000 to his alma mater. “I realize as a state supported institution, we depend on the state of Mississippi to fund the university,” he said. “Therefore, we ultimately need alums and friends of JSU to help close the gaps that exist in funding, if we want our
Alumni profile
university to thrive. Assisting the aims and purposes of JSU is vital, Brown emphasized. “Being an active member of the JSU National Alumni Association, Inc., is definitely one way to contribute but I also recommend financially supporting the JSU Development Foundation—this is my preference,” he said. The executive also shared that he is excited about the leadership of President Thomas K. Hudson, J.D., and his newly implemented strategic plan, JSU Elevate
