Transform your favorite nature photograph with the textural effects of encaustic painting. Bring your own digital photos to print and adhere to a wood panel and to embed and transfer into the wax surface. Learn to combine these techniques with mark making, oil sticks, and over-painting to create a painterly photographic image.
Join artist Sandra Byers (WI) in an exploration of nature and its interpretation in porcelain. Participants will use pinching, handbuilding, and carving techniques to create sculptural forms out of translucent, bright white porcelain from Australia. Glazing and firing will be discussed. Class may begin with a walk outside to find inspiration. Participants are welcome to bring small natural treasures of their own as well.
Trained as a graphic designer and photographer, artist Sarah E. Rehmer (IL) fell in love with the encaustic medium in 2005, combining it with an interest in old books and pages of text. Her work often deals with issues of memory loss and misplaced information, and has been shown throughout the Chicago area, including the Coalition Gallery and the Noyes Cultural Center. Sandra Byers lives and works in Rock Springs, Wisconsin. Her intricate ceramic work is inspired by the beauty of natural forms and the translucent qualities of porcelain. Byers is a two-time resident in the Arts Center’s prestigious Arts/Industry program and has had two solo shows in the Arts Center galleries. Her work is also included in the Arts Center’s collection. TERRA-COTTA GARDEN CONTAINERS Ages 14–Adult Thursdays, February 7–March 7, 5:30–8:00 p.m. (EDTER) Terra-cotta means “baked earth,” and this clay has been used across time and cultures in the creation of vessels. Join in the tradition by making terra-cotta garden containers just when thoughts begin to turn toward spring, seed catalogues arrive in the mail, and garden dreams abound. Participants will use a combination of hand-building, wheel throwing and altering, and surface design and treatment techniques to make individualized garden containers. This class combines the use of stoneware clay and ceramic techniques with multiple materials. Explore multiple approaches to firing works of clay. Using a lightcolored raku clay body and a variety of surface treatments, students will learn different atmospheric effects created by the combination of fire and fuel. Through barrel, sawdust, low-fire salt, and raku firing, this class offers a window into clay tradition and the many possibilities that lie within. Get your garden on! Fashion a simple compost system from plastic storage bins under the guidance of the Arts Center gardener, then start creating some “black gold” for your garden. JUMP INTO JIVE DANCE WORKSHOP Ages 14–Adult Sunday, March 17, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (EDJUM) Spend the day learning the techniques and dance steps of the International Latin Dance Jive with instructors Susan Alby and Rod Schulz. Four, 50-minute sessions include steps, patterns, and styling to make the dance exciting. Instruction will also cover frame and dance hold, timing, and techniques to execute the dance steps more efficiently. A one-hour practice dance follows to help students remember the steps and have fun with what they have learned. Having a dance partner is encouraged, but not required. Try your hand at creating a lovely landscape on an unusual surface. Select a beautiful photo and let it inspire an initial design on paper. Next, transfer your sketch onto a wood board and begin to build the picture with color, shapes, and acrylic paint. Its meaning has changed little, still signifying love in every variety. The whole family can celebrate Valentine’s Day and explore this popular symbol using an array of materials to create personal gifts in an open studio setting. PRESCHOOL The Arts Center Preschool supports early learning through the arts and creativity. This unique learning environment fosters development in alignment with the Wisconsin Early Model Learning Standards. YOUTH ART MONTH OPENING CELEBRATION Sunday, March 3, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Join us in honoring the student artists and their teachers for the twenty-seventh Annual Youth Art Month exhibition. Snacks, workshops, and awards will be part of the celebration, all free of charge. The Youth Art Month exhibition runs February 17–April 14.

EXAIR (Exhibition Artists-in-Residence) ExAIR brings artists featured in the exhibitions to the Arts Center for one to two weeks of gallery talks and hands-on workshops with students, teachers, community groups, and the public. If you have ever wondered what the artist was thinking when you look at a work of art, the ExAIR program gives you a chance to ask the artist in person. This spring Lauren Fensterstock visits to share her insights and creativity. Lauren Fensterstock April 1–12 Installation artist Lauren Fensterstock works on a large scale using an adaptation of the traditional craft of quilling. Fensterstock’s work will fill the House Galleries this spring, and she will lead workshops on using paper to create intricate shadow boxes. THE ARTERY Come, create in The ARTery—the Arts Center’s free drop-in, art-making studio. Investigate materials and add your own vision to our collaborative space. CONNECTING COMMUNITIES WOOSTER RESEARCH LAB February 3–16 (EDWOO) Street art moves indoors for two weeks as New York City’s world-renowned Wooster Collective and the Arts Center present the exploratory Wooster Research Lab. Work with accomplished street artists and learn the basics of media and techniques such as wheat pastes, stencils, and spray paint. Have a hand in shaping the direction of Wooster Collective: The Sheboygan Project, an evolving community arts initiative that brings Sheboygan’s diverse communities together through interaction with the urban environment. Advance registration is required for all classes, camps, and workshops. Early registration is advised as classes and camps can fill quickly. Places will be held only upon receipt of full tuition. Tuitions are refundable (unless noted) minus a $15 processing fee per class up to seven days before a class is to begin. Tuitions are nonrefundable after that time unless class limits are reached or a program is canceled. Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early as classes without a minimum of students may be canceled. Supplies and equipment costs are included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.

GUIDED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITIONS Explore the Arts Center’s critically acclaimed exhibitions, now including EMERY BLAGDON: THE HEALING MACHINE, with a knowledgeable guide. Tours can be scheduled for groups of ten or more (from preschool students through senior citizens) and are designed to meet the needs and interests of the group, whether beginning art viewers or experienced art collectors. Visits can include a hands-on art-making activity and a tour of the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, part of the Arts Center’s collection of works by artist-environment builders.
