This jewelry workshop focuses on the cuttlefish casting technique to produce intricate, one-of-a-kind pewter charms. Cuttlefish bone is used as the mold material, into which a design is carved and molten metal is poured. Come create ”charming” personal adornment with some of the world’s most unusual, fascinating material! This class is open to all skill levels.

Learn to observe and sculpt the human form with clay in this daylong workshop dedicated to the expressive and narrative potential of the figure in ceramic art. Participants will work from a live model to create both gestural work that captures quick movement and a detailed study, resulting in a small-scale figural sculpture and three-dimensional portraiture. Surface treatment, glazing, and firing will be discussed. Participants may arrange to have their work fired at the Arts Center.

Susan Richter-O’Connell first began making “scavenger” jewelry thirty years ago while pursuing her first career as a modern dancer in Boston. She and her Jess Riva Cooper is a ceramic artist currently husband would walk the Atlantic shoreline, in residence in the John Michael Kohler Arts collecting natural treasures such as sticks, Center’s Arts/Industry program. PERCEPTIVE VISION: AN INTRODUCTION TO ENCAUSTIC COLLAGE with Sarah E. Rehmer

Tap into your instinctual art-making skills using everyday materials and objects to create encaustic altered papers. Then, work these prepared papers into collages with a mixture of bought and found papers and materials. Throughout the workshop, information will be shared about archivalquality materials that work best to make stable, lasting paintings and collages. All encaustic supplies are provided for use during this workshop and some papers will be provided for use, however, students are encouraged to be on the lookout for interesting papers and materials to bring with them to include in their work. Trained as a graphic designer and photographer, artist Sarah E. Rehmer fell in love with the encaustic medium in 2005, combining it with an interest in old books and pages of text. Her work often deals with issues of memory loss and misplaced information. Rehmer’s work has been shown throughout the Chicago area, including the Coalition Gallery and the Noyes Cultural Center. THE ARTERY AFTER HOURS: FOUND COLLECTIONS Adults ages 21 and up Thursday, October 17 6:00–8:00 p.m. (EDAAHFA13) Hang out in The ARTery, enjoy a drink, and create your own collection in a box. Open your eyes to the possibilities of found materials all around you. Play with arranging objects to make connections and explore visual vocabulary. Feel free to bring in your own objects. We will be using epoxy resin to assemble 2-D and 3-D objects in your work of art. Containers, some objects, supplies, and instruction will be included. Cash bar including wine and beer on site. Learn the building blocks of working in clay and enjoy the company of others who enjoy creating ceramics in the Arts Center’s clay studio. JEWELRY: BEAD BUILDING Ages 14–Adult Tuesdays, October 15–November 19 6:00–8:00 p.m. (EDBEAFA13) This six-week workshop for intermediate jewelers will have you making a bead a week! From lentil beads to tube beads, riveted and rolled beads to woven beads, learn to build a collection of spectacular beads to include in your jewelry designs. SILK PAINTING EXPERIMENTATION Ages 14–Adult Saturday, November 9 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. (EDSILFA13) Shibori fabric painting produces amazing texture and often results in unexpected designs and colors. Workshop participants will experiment with variations of this method of painting and dyeing cloth. Texture and color on silk will be achieved by folding, tucking, scrunching, pleating, twisting, and wrapping. Techniques using bottle caps, twist ties, rubber bands, tubes, corks, and other odds and ends will be used. Instructor: Patty Aker Tuition: $36 ($31 member)

This class will focus on the fundamentals of watercolor painting, wash and brush technique, color mixing, and design. Lose yourself in the pleasure of movement and rhythm as you dance the fox-trot, waltz, tango, and salsa. Watch superb demonstrations by experienced dancers, meet and mingle with other dancers. YOUTH DANCE SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAM REGISTRATION NOW OPEN! Classes begin the week of September 9 and run through mid-May 2014. Dancers develop confidence in their physical, social, performance, and creative skills through fun-filled classes culminating in a springtime performance on the Arts Center’s stage. Small classes with dedicated instructors ensure that attention is paid to individual skill development. Mini and Pre-Ballet classes instill a love of dance in children ages 3 to 6 by introducing creative movement, rhythm, and ballet class etiquette. Ballet I and II place emphasis on the foundations of ballet and include techniques for rhythm, coordination, and barre work. Levels III and IV include further development of ballet technique and an introduction to modern dance to broaden the young dancer’s movement repertoire.

YOUTH DANCE REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT Dance students may pay for the entire dance year in one lump sum or in two installments. The second installment payment must be made on or before January 1, 2014. Students who pay for the entire year at once receive a 10% tuition discount. Tuition is nonrefundable except in the event of class cancellation or serious injury or illness. Requests for refunds or credits due to injury or illness must be made in writing and accompanied by a doctor’s certificate. Refunds will be prorated. If a class does not meet minimum enrollment, it may be rescheduled or canceled. Rehearsals and the spring dance recital will take place in May. Dig your hands into some buckets of mushy pulp, cut and paste your favorite found items into a beautiful book, and have fun with paper! Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of books and paper. Use found materials, photographs, and the exciting medium of paper pulp to make sculptural tunnel books, which are like mini stage sets! You will also be able to make a small, framed paper-pulp collage using an array of vibrantly colored papers. Instructor: Angie Zimmerman Tuition: $66 ($52 member)

Come play with clay! Pinch, coil, connect, and build with one of the oldest art materials around. Create pieces that will be glazed and fired in the Arts Center’s kilns. We will turn a classroom into a darkroom and learn to develop the pictures taken with our handmade cameras. ARTS CENTER PRESCHOOL OPEN ENROLLMENT Introduce your child to a playful, innovative, unique early learning experience. Openings are available in the Red Class, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00–11:15 a.m., for children age three by September 1, 2013; and the Yellow Class, “4K,” Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Students are immersed in a rich, multidisciplinary arts environment where creativity and imagination foster critical thinking skills. Children explore art in the galleries; people and places in their community; cultures around the world; and literacy, math, and science through the arts as well as experience music and creative movement inspired by the Footlights performing arts series. CONNECTING COMMUNITIES: wisconsin project Connecting Communities brings superb artists into the community to collaborate on original artistic endeavors.

Artist Talk, DIY Postcard Workshop, AND WAndering Wisconsin eN pLEiN air Event Saturday, August 10, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, Town of Wilson Spend the morning with photographers John Shimon and Julie Lindemann at the fascinating artist environment created by James Tellen. They will discuss the Connecting Communities Wisconsin Project and their related Arts Center exhibition. Hear how found images can be modified to make new works with new meanings. Then learn techniques to modify vintage postcards and create your own work that makes a contemporary commentary on place. Use these skills for the afternoon Wandering Wisconsin: En Plein Air Event for postcard-sized canvas. Supplies will be provided. Call 920-458-6144 to register. Cost: Free. Registration Required.

THE ARTERY Stop by, drop in, and make art! The ARTery is a free, all-ages, art-making space at the Arts Center! Projects are inspired by the works in the galleries, and are collaborative, large-scale installations that grow with each participating visitor. Add your art to the mix, and leave your mark at the Arts Center.

Places are held only upon receipt of full tuition. Tuition is refundable (unless noted) minus a $15 processing fee per class up to seven days before a class is to begin. Tuition is nonrefundable after that time unless class limits are reached or a program is canceled. Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early as classes without a minimum of students may be canceled. Supplies and equipment costs are included in the tuition unless otherwise noted. 10


The SPARK! program is an engaging monthly program for people with early- to mid-stage memory loss and a friend, family member, or caregiver. The atmosphere is welcoming and inviting; each month a new activity is planned and refreshments are served.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES Birthdays are special at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center! Let us plan an exhibition-themed party for your child age 2–14.
