Taught by talented and dedicated artists who have a passion for sharing their experience and love of art with students, summer classes are full of fun and learning.

SUMMER DAY CAMPS Enrich your child’s summer with fun-filled art adventures. Whether creating individual works of art, collaborating on site-specific installations, or choreographing an original performance piece, camps are a great way for toddlers through teens to make art and make friends. This summer, the arts experiences will be inspired by the extraordinary works of art in the galleries and the theme of human/land relationships found in the UNCOMMON GROUND exhibition series. Invite your child to explore and create with a variety of materials and techniques in this open studio environment full of arts activities designed especially for early learners.

Literature comes to life through visual arts, creative movement, music, and drama. Campers will immerse themselves in outdoor and indoor activities inspired by Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax and the exhibition series UNCOMMON GROUND.

Using the UNCOMMON GROUND exhibitions as a springboard, young artists will investigate their relationships with the land and develop their own creative vocabulary. Morning sessions center on two-dimensional media; afternoons revolve around three-dimensional media. Sign up for a morning or afternoon session, or both sessions for a full day of art immersion!

2-D EXPLORATION 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (EDTEESU131) Discover the creative potential of printmaking, photography, and a variety of drawing and painting media. Develop a series of individual works of art that can be combined into a whole.

3-D EXPLORATION 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. (EDTEESU132) Create individual and collaborative sculptures using unconventional materials and techniques inspired by the intriguing sculptural installations in the galleries. Discover the potential of paper, clay, metal, charcoal, and plastic in the building of extraordinary forms.

Create a portfolio of drawings and paintings in response to what you see and imagine when exploring the exhibitions. Learn about color, composition, shape, line, value, and texture using pencils, pastels, charcoal, and paint!

INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS Ages 7–10 Mondays and Wednesdays June 17, 19, 24, 26, and July 1 and 3 1:00–3:00 p.m. (EDINTSU13) Smush and shape wet clay as you build pieces by hand. Experiment with a variety of imaginative decorative methods that make your work even more individual. Then learn about firing and ways to add to your creation after firing.

Inspired by exhibitions that focus on human/land relationships, learn to incorporate locally grown produce from the Sheboygan farmers’ market into seasonal recipes planned by chef Marilyn Montemayor. Create and eat delicious, quick meals ranging from pasta dishes to delightful desserts in the caterer’s kitchen.

Learn the basics of effective visual storytelling using traditional illustration tools: pencils, paper, watercolor, and ink. Character design, cartooning, and the formal elements of comics will be covered. Students may bring in their own laptops for individualized instruction in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Explore the art of stop-motion claymation and other animation techniques. Learn fundamental concepts, character development, plot sequencing, and movie editing. Participants should bring their own digital cameras.

A class for book lovers! Discover the versatility of clay as you create nontraditional ceramic books. Explore the basics of slab construction, textural elements, and clay surface treatments while learning about sculptural book forms and hand-binding techniques.

Come join the fun! Using glue, string, cardboard, buttons, feathers, coins, and sandpaper—all manner of recycled and repurposed materials—create a portfolio of rolled, pressed, and printed works inspired by the exhibitions.

Just in time for the fall fashion season, create multimedia works of art using textile and fashion design as your inspiration. Make sculpture, ceramics, paintings, drawings, and prints based on cutting-edge clothing.

Learn the basic techniques of modern, jazz, and hip-hop dance and move to a new beat! A creative exploration of dance elements such as time and space will expand your range of abilities. Dancers will perform a movement phrase for family and friends on the last day of class.

The power and energy of West African dance is influenced by the fluid gestures of Middle Eastern dance and the rhythm of AfroCaribbean music. Let the rhythm of the drums guide your body and capture your soul in this excursion into the rich culture of Africa!

Become an articulate, dynamic, and daring dancer in this class designed to introduce dancers to the art of spontaneous movement. Create expressive dance sequences in response to the installations in the Arts Center’s galleries. Explore the same theme that inspired the works of art in UNCOMMON GROUND through dance elements of texture, range, style, and depth.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS AND ADULT CLASSES Summer is an excellent time to explore the world in a new way with exceptional artists and skilled instructors as your guide. Adult classes focus on nurturing creativity, honing skills, and engaging with ideas. NATURALLY SMALL: AN EXPLORATION IN PORCELAIN WITH SANDRA BYERS Ages 18–Adults Saturday and Sunday, April 20–21, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (EDNAT) Join artist Sandra Byers (WI) in an exploration of nature and its interpretation in porcelain. Participants will use pinching, hand-building, and carving techniques to create sculptural forms out of translucent, bright white porcelain from Australia.

BEGINNING PAINTING Ages 14–Adult Tuesdays, April 30–May 21 6:00–8:00 p.m. (EDBEG) Learn proportion, perspective, and relationships between objects while exploring acrylic painting techniques. Class emphasis is on technical experimentation and advancement to representational, illustrative painting from observation. All materials provided.

WATERCOLOR FOR THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNER Ages 18–Adults Saturdays June 1–15 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. (EDWATSU13) This class will introduce you to the wonders of painting with watercolors. Learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting, color mixing, wash and brush techniques, and design with an emphasis on keeping it simple. Outdoor painting time will be included.

THE ARTERY AFTER HOURS: TERRARIUMS

Adults ages 21 and up Thursday, May 30, 6:00–8:00 p.m. (EDAAHSU13) Hang out in The ARTery, have a drink, listen to some music, and create a green and growing miniature landscape populated with rocks, moss, grass, and tiny figures, all contained within a funky glass container! All supplies and basic instruction are included. Cash bar including wine and beer on site.

SUMMER PASTELS Ages 14–Adult Tuesdays, July 9–30, 6:00–8:00 p.m. (EDSUMSU13) Experience the seduction of pastels while working in the Arts Center’s beautiful gardens. Learn to prepare paper, effectively use color and color blending, create strong compositions, and produce the illusion of three-dimensional forms. Some drawing experience is helpful but not necessary. Materials provided.

Youth Dance Registration for Youth Dance 2013/2014 opens July 1 The youth dance program runs throughout the school year, September–May. Maria Hackbarth and Molly Zielke instruct the classes. Mini and Pre-Ballet classes instill a love of dance in children ages 3–6 by introducing creative movement, rhythm, and ballet class etiquette. Ballet I and II emphasize the foundations of ballet while including rhythm, coordination, creative movement, and barre work. Level III, Advanced, and Modern Dance build on ballet technique, broaden dancers’ movement vocabulary, and expand their creative repertoire. New dance students may register beginning July 1, 2013. BALLROOM DANCE SPRING BALLROOM DANCE EVENT Ages 14–Adult Sunday, April 14, 1:00–4:00 p.m. (EDSPR) Dress up and greet spring with an enchanting afternoon of style and elegance on the dance floor. Lose yourself in a fox-trot, swing, salsa, tango, and waltz. Meet new people, watch dance demonstrations and exhibitions, and mix it up with other dancers. There will be an introductory lesson prior to the event at noon ($5 per person).

Preschool

Begins September 3, Registration Now Open The Arts Center Preschool supports early learning through the arts and creativity. Children explore the exhibitions, attend performances, and learn and create through the arts and play. This unique learning environment is state licensed and certified and fosters development in alignment with the Wisconsin Early Model Learning Standards. Registration is open and ongoing for the 2013–2014 school year for children ages 3 to 5. Contact Keely Phippen at the Arts Center for more information and a tour of the school. Limited scholarships are available.

SCHOLARSHIPS Limited scholarships are available for all classes and camps. The deadline for summer scholarship applications is May 15, 2013. Applications are available at the Arts Center or at www.jmkac.org.

Advance registration is required for all classes, camps, and workshops. Early registration is advised as classes and camps can fill quickly. Places will be held only upon receipt of full tuition. Tuitions are refundable (unless noted) minus a $15 processing fee per class up to seven days before a class is to begin. Tuitions are nonrefundable after that time unless class limits are reached or a program is canceled. Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early as classes without a minimum of students may be canceled. Supplies and equipment costs are included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.


CONNECTING COMMUNITIES Connecting Communities brings internationally recognized artists to Sheboygan to collaborate on original artistic endeavors with the community.

WOOSTER COLLECTIVE: THE SHEBOYGAN PROJECT The possibility for art is around every corner. As part of a yearlong project, Wooster Collective has found potential for fascinating street-art installations all around the city of Sheboygan, and this summer will see that potential become reality. During collaborative residencies, visiting artists will get to know the culture and people of Sheboygan and create works of art based on their discoveries. Exciting, hands-on workshops with artists Chris Stain, Gaia, and Gabriel Specter will be held throughout the summer. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the exciting street-art movement. THE ARTERY Creative minds converge and imaginations flourish in The ARTery, your FREE, drop-in, art-making studio! Visitors of all ages are welcome to contribute to the collaborative installations inspired by UNCOMMON GROUND exhibitions. GUIDED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITIONS Explore the Arts Center’s critically acclaimed exhibitions with a knowledgeable guide. Tours can be scheduled for groups of ten or more (from preschool students through senior citizens) and are designed to meet the needs and interests of the group, whether beginning art viewers or experienced art collectors. Visits can include a hands-on art-making activity and a tour of the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, part of the Arts Center’s collection of works by artist-environment builders. M.I.K.E. Record your songs or stories with M.I.K.E. this summer! M.I.K.E. is a digital recording studio and a dynamic public sculpture built in 2006 by artists Richard Saxton and Stuart Hyatt and over 30 community members. Recording sessions are available throughout the summer and into fall (weather permitting) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30–7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sundays, 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Additional times are available by appointment.
