Giving Back to CHEO at Mother Teresa For most teenagers, a visit to CHEO is the last thing on their mind; but for Jacob Cuglietta, a grade 11 student at St. Mother Teresa High School, he can’t picture himself doing anything else. Every day since the start of the second school semester, Jacob has made the long hour and 20-minute bus ride to CHEO, where he volunteers for a minimum of 15 hours a week as a part of his school’s co-op placement.

“It feels good to make a difference — whether it be helping a patient or making them smile and laugh,” he said. But even after school is out for the summer, Jacob plans to volunteer at least two days a week at the children’s hospital and says he will do his co-op placement there again next year, saying he chooses to take the course again.

He also plans to be a part of the CHEO Telethon on June 9th.

After high school, Jacob plans to study to become a paediatrician because he wants to continue to find ways to help children. As Max Keeping used to say, “thank you for taking time to make a difference in the life of a child.”

Barrhaven Proves to be Successful at the Cappies Barrhaven is a place with so much talent, and that was proven with multiple area high schools being nominated for Cappies awards.

Longfields Davidson Heights proved to be one of the most successful schools, with 17 nominations for their musical, the Addams Family. John McCrae Students Hold a Successful Charity Event for Interval House On Thursday, May 23rd, dozens of Barrhaven residents packed Anabia Cupcakes located at 3570 Strandherd Drive,

to support the Lanark County Interval House, an organization which helps women in crisis by providing shelter and resources to help get them back on their feet. The event was fully studentdriven, with multiple pieces of artwork being placed on display.

In the middle of it was the main centrepiece — which showed three women standing next to one another while forming a human-made tree. Visitors to Anabia Cupcakes were able to pay $2.00 to put their thumbprint on the piece of artwork, which will later be hung up on the wall of Interval House. Students have been working on the project for weeks, and their hard work paid off.

Helping the Cause at Mother Teresa When Students from St. Mother Teresa High School decided to hold their first ever Relay For Life event, they weren’t sure how it was going to turn out. They set a goal of raising $25,000 and hoped to pay tribute to those who lost their battle to cancer and celebrate those who overcame it. So on Thursday, May 16th, around 400 students participated in the 12 hour-long event. In total, the students raised $45,000 for cancer research — almost double their goal and more than any other school in Barrhaven. Student council reps say they hope this will set a precedent for years to come.

OC Transpo Summer Changes for Barrhaven Route 272 - The route will be extended to start at Cobble Hill and Fallowfield instead of the current starting point at Cobble Hill and Hélène-Campbell. New stops will be implemented on Cobble Hill. Routes 95 and 272 will be reduced because of summer months (not serving students) Wild Parsnip Program The 2019 Wild Parsnip Program will start on May 21st, weather permitting.

Chaudiere Bridge Closure Due to high levels of water and planned construction, the Chaudiere Bridge will remain closed until the end of August.

OC Transpo routes affected are rerouted. There will be an improved detour arrangement for OC Transpo services but there is not yet an implementation date for it, because it requires the availability of the Union Bridge. The Union Bridge is one of several bridges that makes up the crossing, but is currently unavailable because of the high water levels. OC Transpo will advise customers through all communication channels when it is able to implement the improved detour.

New security measures in place for Barrhaven Canada Day celebration

By Charlie Senack After a number of security incidents at Canada Day in Barrhaven last year, new security measures are being put in place to keep everyone safe.

A fence will be put up around the site, more security guards will be hired, and anyone who wants to enter the event will have to go through bag checks at two entrances into the field.

“It’s going to be a very strict entrance requirement,” said Darrell Bartraw, volunteer organizer for Canada Day in Barrhaven. “The police have also indicated that they are going to increase their presence (and) we also need to do bag checks to ensure no fireworks, alcohol, narcotics or weapons are brought into the site.”

This all comes after a brawl broke out at the event last year, which included fireworks being thrown into the crowd, and police being swarmed by a group of about 100 teenagers.

All of this led to a 15-yearold male being arrested and tasered by police, and multiple people having to be treated by paramedics after being pepper sprayed.

About $18,800 worth of electrical equipment was also stolen from the site, and now needs to be reimbursed by Canada Day in Barrhaven because their insurance doesn’t cover the costs.

That alongside $7,700 worth of fencing and $10,000 worth of extra security means the volunteer-run group is having to deal with some unexpected bills.

“To cover this year’s costs, we are going to need more sponsorships from a lot of the small and large businesses in Barrhaven,” Bartraw said.

“Even if it’s a $300 to $500 sponsorship, recognition will be put on the businesses door with a sticker indicating that they support Canada Day events in Barrhaven.”

But despite last years problems, the event for the most part will remain the same.

July 1st will see a multicultural stage and kids zone running from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and musical performances will also be taking place on centre stage with Stacey’s Mom being the lead performance.

family breakfast, and will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on July 1. Tickets are $5.00 a person and free for anyone over the age of 65. Tickets will be going up for sale on the Canada Day in Barrhaven website in the near future, and free tickets for seniors can be obtained through the Barrhaven Seniors Council.

The midway will also be open for five days from June 27 to July 1st, with times changing depending on weather and attendance. A list updated times will also be posted on the Canada Day in Barrhaven website.

“They will both take you right across the street from Clarke Fields to the Christian School,” Bartraw said. “They are going to be running starting

at 10:30 a.m. until the last one at about 10:40 p.m. after the fireworks.”

While the shuttle buses are free, organizers are asking people to donate at least $2.00 into the bucket on the bus per

person, or $5.00 per family.

It was a long time coming, but the Barrhaven Food Cupboard has finally moved into its new digs at the Walter Baker Centre.

The move means more space for the volunteer-run organization which processed 1,673 requests for assistance in 2018 — an increase of 5.1 per cent from the year before.

The new centre also means a new experience for their clients.

Instead volunteers packaging up the food for those in need, the clients will be able to go around to stocked shelves with a shopping cart and choose their own items — much like they would do in any traditional grocery store.

“It is a much better arrangement than someone saying they would like some food and then us packing up an order for a family of four per say, and they get whatever they get,” said George MacDonald, Vice President of the Barrhaven Food Cupboard.

The increase of space also means that they can now accept perishable food items.

They have started stocking eggs and bread, but plan to start providing other products like milk and butter in the near future.

It also means that most of the food will be housed on site, and will not have to be stored at other locations. That’s welcomed news for the centre that collected 19,450 kilograms of food in 2018.

And while volunteers are happy with the move, they were looking at different options only four years ago.

“Initially we were hesitant because we had wanted a building, but when we saw it and saw the potential that it had, we were quite excited with the opportunity to move here,” said MacDonald.

Lots of work had to be done before the centre could move in — a project with high costs which was supported by the food cupboards building fund and through contributions from the City of Ottawa.

The public is being invited to help celebrate the opening of the new location with a grand opening barbecue on Saturday, June 8, 2019. It will be held at the front entrance of the centre located at

100 Malvern Drive, starting at 12:00 p.m.

Anyone who wishes to donate food to the Barrhaven Food Cupboard can do so at grocery bins located at six grocery stores in the area, the Barrhaven Legion, or the Minto Rec Centre.

MacDonald said that on top of non-perishable food items, they are also looking for toiletries. Cash donations can also be made on their website.

It’s good to see that the City of Ottawa is moving forward with its plans to review the size of its 23 wards and consider a long overdue realignment.

Mayor Jim Watson told the Citizen that he does not want this boundary review to be an exercise to add seats to Ottawa’s council, especially given the fact that the Ford Government reduced the number of seats in Toronto from 47 to 25.

Watson has spoken in Barrhaven several times in the past few years about the geographical challenges Ottawa faces. He illustrated his point with the fact that the entire cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary can all fit within the geographical limits of Ottawa. He said that while there is a need to have the boundaries realigned, there is no need to increase the number of seats at council. Nor, he said, would it be a wise idea to reduce the number of seats at council.

Fortunately, Ford and some Ottawa MPPs, including Nepean’s Lisa MacLeod and Carleton’s Goldie Ghamari, have suggested that Ottawa will not be targeted for a reduction in council seats.

The boundary review will create a shift in municipal ward boundaries by the 2020 election.

Nowhere in the city is this boundary realignment needed more than in Barrhaven. The Barrhaven Ward has the highest population in Ottawa, with more than 61.000 residents. Conversely, the West Carleton-March Ward, which covers a vast geographical area, has only 25,000 residents. The average population of a ward in Ottawa is about 43,000.

The Barrhaven Ward is defined to the east by Woodroffe Avenue. Residents east of Woodroffe are in the Gloucester-South Nepean Ward. A logical realignment would be to divide Barrhaven into two wards, using Strandherd Drive as the line instead of Woodroffe, and creating northern and southern wards rather than the current east-west set up.

Stonebridge and Half Moon Bay have also presented some issues with boundaries. When that land was first developed, there was no rhyme or reason to the boundary line. Some residents have Jan Harder as their councillor, while their neighbours may have either Carol Anne Meehan or Scott Moffatt as their councillors. Some houses even straddle the boundaries.

The Stonebridge Golf Course realignment highlights this issue. The part of the course that Mattamy wants to build homes in is in Scott Moffatt’s Rideau Goulbourn Ward. Moffatt is a rural councillor whose ward covers both Manotick and Richmond, which are two villages designated for growth. Minto is developing in Manotick, while Mattamy and Caivan will be building a combined 1,700 homes in Richmond.

Regardless of how the boundaries fall, the realignment will be a good thing for Barrhaven, and Mayor Watson is handling this the right way.

May 31st - June 1st-2nd Moss Dickinson Moss Dickinson was born in Denmark, Lewis Co. New York to Barnabus and Lydia Dickinson on June 1st 1822. His parents were descendants of the Pilgrim Fathers who landed in New England aboard the Mayflower.

By 1827 the Dickinsons had moved to Cornwall, Ontario where Barnabus started a stage coach service carrying mail and passengers between Montreal and Kingston.

For Moss’ tenth birthday his father took him to Kingston to see the opening of the Rideau Canal.

He later married Elizabeth Trigge.

By 1847 Moss had purchased a number of ships and barges to transport livestock, grain, logs, cheese, and passengers between Ottawa and Kingston, servicing all the tiny villages that had sprung up along the route. In 1850 Dickinson’s fleet numbered 16 steamers and 60 barges.

In late 1859 and early 1860, Dickinson and his partner Joseph Currier built the Mill in Manotick.

The following year Moss’ wife Elizabeth died five

months after the birth of daughter Elizabeth. From 1864 to 1866 Dickinson was the Mayor of Ottawa.

In 1867 Dickinson built the fine old home, directly across from the Mill in Manotick. The building served as general store and the first post office in the new town, then in 1870 he moved his family into it to be closer to the milling business.

The year 1882 was a busy one in the Dickinson household.

The Dickinson house was the campaign headquarters for the election of Sir John A. MacDonald. Moss was elected to represent the riding of Russel. Dickinson House The Dickinson house was again the headquarters for the election in 1887. Moss did not run in this election.

By 1896 Moss’ health was failing and he was rarely seen around the Mill. His son George took over the Mill operations.

On July 19th , 1897, Moss Kent Dickinson died in the house he had built in the town he had named.

He is buried in Ottawa’s Beechwood Cemetery beside his wife Elizabeth.

The IndependentCOMMUNITY Barrhaven students raise more than $80K in Relay for Life events

By Charlie Senack Almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by cancer. That’s why St. Mother Teresa High School Students decided to hold their first ever Relay For Life event.

It’s a 12 hour-long day which raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, and includes time to play games and have fun, and time to reflect on the disease which on average, 200,000 Canadians are diagnosed with every year.

The event was held on Thursday, May 16, and around 400 students participated in the fundraiser which went from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“It was a really great way to come together as a school community,” said Bayza Woldemariam, grade 12.

“It was also a really good way for us to learn more about cancer and how it affects so many people… even in our own school community people have experienced it in their lives or know someone who has experienced it as well.”

Part of the event also featured a

walk around the track, which was led by two cancer survivors. They were the aunts of grade 12 St. Mother Teresa student Emma Perreault, who was one of the main champions in getting the event organized.

She said one of her aunts travelled to Ottawa from Barrie, Ontario to be a part of the event.

“One of my aunts had breast cancer and is In remission… she’s totally good and everything, but my other aunt just had her kidney removed last year because of cancer,” she said. “It was nice to see the two of them together and the whole school celebrating the fact that they are going to be ok and that they have all these resources available.”

Since it was the school’s first time holding an event like this, they set a goal of raising $25,000. In the end they raised $45,000 — and students say they hope this will set a precedent for future years.

John McCrae High School also held their annual Relay For Life event at the Superdome on Friday, May 24, and raised close to $40,000.

Motorcycle crash sends Barrhaven man to hospital with life-threatening injuries

On May 13, around 3:40 am, paramedics responded to the intersection of Prince of Wales Dr. and Longfields

Dr. between Stonebridge and Manotick for a serious single-vehicle collision involving a red Honda motorcycle.

The operator of the motorcycle, Kyle Berry, of Bar-

rhaven, struck a rock wall and, according to paramedics, sustained multi-system trauma.

Motorists came to Berry’s assistance and provided first

aid until firefighters arrived.

Paramedics arrived a short time later and continued to care for the victim. Berry, who is in his 20’s, was stabilized during his transport

to the Ottawa Civic Campus’ trauma centre where he was listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

The IndependentSPORTS High school sports round-up: Titans knocked off in lacrosse final

The St. Mother Teresa Titans fell short in their bid to repeat as the city’s high school lacrosse champions.

The Titans had an undefeated regular season and edged South Carleton 6-5 in the semi-final in a rematch of last year’s championship. In the final at the Nepean Sportsplex Minto Field, the Titans lost 8-5 to Sacred Heart.

St. Mother Teresa also advanced to the NCSSAA baseball semi-finals, which were rescheduled from last week due to rain. The Titans beat St. Francis Xavier 5-2 Monday to advance to the semi-finals. The Titans played Sir Robert Borden, and Nepean played St. Joseph. Both games were played after the Independent went to press. The final

was scheduled for the following day (Thurs., May 30) at the Nepean Sportsplex Hamilton Yards on Woodroffe Ave.

In high school girls touch football, St. Mother Teresa, John McCrae, Longfields Davidson Heights and St. Joseph all

had playoff games Tuesday. The semi-finals are Monday, June 3 with the finals Wed., June 5 at Minto Field.
