More than $1 million in combined damages to three homes struck by lightning By Charlie Senack Three houses in Nepean were struck by lighting during a storm on June 27, including one in Barrhaven. At around 10:35 p.m. Ottawa Fire received multiple calls of smoke and flames coming from the roof of a home located at 103 Ambiance Drive. The fire was declared a two-alarm blaze, and left two of the four-unit row homes inhabitable. Fire crews were able to sustain the damage to the roofs and

attics of the two affected homes. One nearby resident said he heard a loud bang just before the house caught fire. “I heard a crack of lightning strike so close it shook me to the core,” he said, adding that ten minute later through his bay windows, he saw “red like nothing I had ever seen.” All occupants of the homes evacuated safely, but one elderly female had to recover help from nearby neighbours.

The blaze was out by 11:30 p.m. that night, but not before leaving around $500,000 in damages. Two other homes caught lighting that night, including a four-row complex along the Rideau River located at Prince of Wales Drive and West Hunt Club Road, and another at 4 Brockington Crescent in the Tanglewood neighbourhood. Damage for all three properties is expected to be more than one million Remove a Person_Ad copy 12/18/18 7:56 PM Page 1 dollars, and left six people homeless.

Fights, arrests and swarmings provide challenges for Barrhaven’s Canada Day By Charlie Senack Despite implementing new security measures, police reported multiple incidents during the annual Canada Day in Barrhaven event. According to a press release sent out by Ottawa Police on July 3, “officers again encountered social disorder and fights at Clarke Fields for the Barrhaven Canada Day festivities.” At around 9:00 p.m. on July 1, police say a large group of

individuals — mainly teens — began to form around police officers in an attempt to intimidate them. As a result more officers were called to the scene, and dispersed the crowd. Shortly after, police arrested two males who lit fireworks from a moving vehicle just outside of the fair gates. Festival goers say the fireworks were aimed towards the crowd, and were shot out of the sunroof and windows of the van.

And towards the end of the evening, police had to break up a large fight near the main entrance to the event — just one of multiple fights that were reported. But despite all of this main organizer Darrell Bartraw says the event was a success, drawing record crowds for the 39th annual Canada Day in Barrhaven. “Some things happened that we were not even aware of,” he

said. “It is unfortunate that there are a few youths who are ruining it for others, because there is a lot of youth, couples, and families who had a great time.” This year’s incidents were very minor compared to what happened last year, when multiple people were almost injured when fireworks were lit in the crowd, and swarmings took place. All of that resulted in a 15-year-old male being arrested and tasered by police, and mul-

tiple people having to be treated by paramedics after being pepper sprayed. That all led to new security measures being put in place this year, which included fencing the perimeter of the fair grounds, having bag checks, and adding more security and police personnel. To make sure that next year’s event is in safer, Bartraw says Canada Day in Barrhaven organizers will meet with mem-

bers of the Ottawa Police and their security company to take a review of what can be done differently. “There are already a few ideas that we are going to be implementing next year,” he said. Some parents took to Facebook to say that their children were swarmed during this year’s event, with one mother saying her daughter’s phone was stolen.

ganizer Darrell Bartraw. “We increased our kids’ zone and never saw so many kids use the area before. Our multicultural stage had some amazing acts, our midway had more rides than usual, and our bands — as always — attracted large crowds.” The event was so successful this year, Bartraw said he believes it had a record-

breaking attendance. “Every year the crowd seems to get bigger,” he said. “A lot of people were talking about not coming because of the incidents we had last year, but because of the added security we had and the fencing with bag checks, it turned out that more people attended than usual.” The weather also couldn’t

have been better for the event. With temperatures around 30 degrees, it was a much different experience than last year when Ottawa broke records with temperatures soaring up to a whopping 47 degrees with the humidex. Following the opening ceremonies which took place at 4:00 p.m., multiple acts took to the main stage in-

cluding: Stacey’s Mom, The Start, and One Night Stand. That was all followed by a 20-minute firework show which some say were better than the ones downtown. And because of the record breaking crowds this year, some people were disappointed by the long lines to purchase food. Bartraw says that’s because one of

their food trucks did not show up, and because the midway did not bring any food vendors with them this year. Bartraw says he’s already been in contact with the Midway organizers, and says they will be back next year, when Canada Day in Barrhaven celebrates their 40th anniversary.

Plans underway for Barrhaven’s 40th Canada Day celebration in 2020

By Charlie Senack Another successful Canada Day in Barrhaven is in the books, and planning is already underway for next year. The day started with a new family and seniors breakfast, followed by activities for people young and old to enjoy. “We had a great Canada Day this year,” said main or-

Wrong time, wrong place for a lack of judgement In our last issue of the Barrhaven Independent, we mentioned how Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod went from being the Minister of Tears to the Minister of Cheers. But after last week’s incident with Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, MacLeod is, to many, the Minister of Jeers. Lisa MacLeod has been a champion and a leader in this community for well over a decade. In the aftermath of the tornado last fall, Lisa was there as a leader. After the tragic death of Barrhaven high school rugby player Rowan Stringer, Lisa MacLeod stepped up and championed a piece of legislation that would serve as Rowan’s legacy. Lisa is a part of our community. She is a genuine friend to almost everyone in Barrhaven who has met her. So when something like this happens, we feel badly. It’s embarrassing for her, and for Nepean. In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Melnyk said it was during the Rolling Stones concert in Barrie, Ontario when the alleged incident occurred. “So I’m just there, we’ve got families and friends in a small group and I’m surrounded by people from Ottawa — and I see from the corner of my eye somebody trying to bust through,” Melnyk said in a phone interview with the Ottawa Citizen. When the Nepean MPP approached the Ottawa Senators owner, Melnyk alleges that MacLeod yelled “‘I am your minister and you’re a f—ing piece of s–t and you’re a f—ing loser’.” Melnyk said he didn’t recognize MacLeod at first, and placed her as a “crazed fan”. After the Ottawa Citizen broke this story which made national headlines, MacLeod issued an apology on Twitter saying, “Let me set the record straight, I gave @MelnykEugene some feedback at the Rolling Stones concert and I apologized to him for being so blunt. I have serious concerns about the state of our beloved Ottawa Senators! We need to get our team back on the road to winning the cup!” Soon after a second apology was issued where MacLeod said; “I regret my inappropriate remarks and apologize for them. I have spoken with Mr. Melnyk, offered to meet him and would be happy to do so anytime.” Melnyk called MacLeod’s apology “flippant.” “Her tweet this morning takes, no accountability for her actions and in fact, tries to justify them,” he said in a statement to the media. “I’m moving on from this — walking away with a much higher opinion of the premier and a much lower opinion of our minister of sport (ironic).” MacLeod has been unbeatable in Nepean during her political career. But if she’s not careful, her straight shooting, hockey mom quality that has endeared her to local voters could someday be her downfall.

An entire column about nothing

I don’t think I have ever been invested in a TV show quite like I was when Seinfeld was on the air. If you were into the show, doesn’t it seem like yesterday that we saw the last episode, and then we just waited in expectation that it would come back. How could it not? But it didn’t. All we are left with are reruns and memories. Every now and then, I will make a Seinfeld reference when I am ranting about something, and I will be met with a blank stare. Then I realize, there are actually people out there who were not addicted to Seinfeld. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But seriously, thinking about the 30th anniversary of Seinfeld has made me realize that the entire depth of my persona is nothing but Bugs Bunny, Seinfeld, Kids in the Hall and Harry Potter references. I’m not even complex enough to work in Simpsons or Family Guy references. Oh, yes, and don’t forget the irrelevant sports trivia facts that drive the Diva absolutely bonkers. Are you like that, too? Do you live in a world of pop culture references? Were you obsessed with Seinfeld? At Lone Star, do you go out of your way to call out anyone who double dips their chips? Because, as we know, when you double dip, you may as well stick your whole face in the bowl. When you are at a restaurant waiting for your table, do you giggle and then randomly say, in a Chinese accent, “Cartwright! Table for four!” And then you keep giggling while everyone just stares at you? When you see someone at a distance ranting and raving while waving their arms in the air frantically, do you instantly make a Coco the Monkey reference? Do you ever ask for only the top of the muffin when you’re at the Tim Hortons drive thru? Do you ever stop and take notice when someone is wearing a puffy shirt? Have you ever stared at your hands at wondered if you could have been a hand model? Or, for the women, have you ever been worried that someone might think you have man hands? Have you ever walked into a public restroom and asked someone in an occupied cubicle if they can spare a square? Do you ever blurt out “No soup for you!” when you are serving lunch or dinner to your family? When you watch hockey highlights on Sports Centre, do you ever make wiggly devil horns with your fingers and yell out, “The Devils!” whenever clips from the New Jersey Devils’ game come on? In past relationships, were you a bad breakerupper? Did you use the “it’s not you, it’s me,”

line? Do you know any low-talkers, high-talkers or close-talkers? Are you a baldist? (Do you discriminate against bald people?) Do you ever go into Chapters and ask them if they have a coffee table book about coffee tables? Do you sometimes FROM THE worry that you’re a hipster doofus? When you hear one of your friends say something funny, do you smile enthusiastically and by Jeff Morris say, “That’s gold, Jerry. Gold!”? Do you ever get horrified yet fascinated when you hear a tractor mishap story and the victim ends up with toe thumbs? When you sit down for dinner and someone serves you broccoli, do you refer to it as a vile weed? Every year on December 23, do you erect a Festivus pole, and then air out your grievances and challenge a family member to feats of strength? Do you ever describe someone as Penske material? When you sit down on a plane and the stranger beside you decides to make small talk, do you ever tell them you are an importer/exporter of latex? Do you ever tell them you are a marine biologist? When you are hungry for a snack at the gas station convenience store, do you get a bag of Rold Gold just so you can say, “These pretzels are making me thirsty.”? Do you shut yourself in your car when you are stressed out and yell, “Serenity Now!” Do you stop and stare at a Frogger game when you see one in a business or at an arcade? When you get a high score at a public video game, how often do you go back and look to check if you still have the high score? Are you a re-gifter? Have you ever looked at a friend’s baby and said he or she was “breathtaking”? Have you ever described anything, from plants to diamonds, by saying “They’re real, and they’re spectacular!”? Do you wish that some parts of the Queensway or the 401 had luxury lanes? Did your father or grandfather own a beltless trench coat? Do you ever randomly blurt out, “Stella!” When this column is too short, does it have shrinkage? Or should I have stopped short and just written, “yada, yada, yada.” I hope you enjoyed this barrage of Seinfeld memories. If you didn’t, well, that’s a shame.

Barrhaven traffic issues have been a top priority for years

Folks, I’ve been working on traffic issues in Barrhaven for years! Remember the Transit Forum, the Barrhaven Transportation Strategy and the Move Barrhaven Avance held in 2018? These were my initiatives because I saw these traffic issues coming and we needed a voice to explain what’s going on to City Managers. They’ve listened and we’re working on some important long range funding plans for both new Greenbank Road and the Barnsdale Interchange. This is important, but they’re not happening today. Since winter of this year, I’ve been bombarded from city project managers along with developers letting me know about the different projects going to happen this summer. The problem is that I’m the only one who gets to see everything going on and the big picture. Because I live here and have represented Barrhaven for many years, I get how Barrhaven moves. I’ve asked city staff to look at all of the road detours, closures and figure out how to keep everyone moving. There are close to 35,000 people living in Barrhaven South and they need access in and out. So, here we are, July 3rd and here’s what’s going on today. The little Greenbank Road Bridge over the Jock River is closed to vehicles. It will be closed for July and August. Please note that it will be kept open for pedestrians and bikes and it has to be completed before school starts for the kids that go to St. Joe’s and for all of you. I asked the developer on Cambrian Road to make sure the road is in good shape before today. I started working on all of this in the winter. Even so, it turns out they won’t be out of there until a week from Friday, very frustrating! To compensate, we’re monitoring traffic at Jockvale and Greenbank and will implement a detour in place at Jockvale and Longfields if/when required. This doesn’t mean it will be closed, it will just be made safer and something I have been asking for a couple of months now. Once we have this detour plan working as best as possible, stay tuned for construction on Strandherd and Greenbank through the Greenbelt.

LET’S TALK

BARRHAVEN by Jan Harder

Trust me when I say this, I have been working hard to make this workable for many months now. There are more projects that will happen and I am doing my best to lessen the inconvenience to you. I am not a traffic engineer and count on those who are to help me help you.

Pools and Safety

There is nothing better than jumping into a pool on a hot summer’s day. However, sadly, ever year a number of Canadians drown in backyard pools. These deaths are preventable. The City’s Pool Enclosure By-law is designed to increase the safety of all pools and hot tubs. While requirements vary, the following rules apply regardless of when your pool enclosure was constructed: · All gates in a pool enclosure must be self-closing and equipped with a selflatching device and a lock located inside the enclosed area · All pool owners must ensure every gate around the pool in closed and locked at all times, except when the pool area is in use · Pool enclosure gates adjoining public spaces like parks or public pathways must be locked at all times, except when the gate itself is in use. · Portable and blow up pools that hold water at a depth of two feet or more are a potential safety hazard and require a compliant pool enclosure If you are planning to install a pool this summer, please remember to obtain your pool enclosure permit for everyone’s safety. For more detailed information about pool enclosures and permits, please visit Ottawa. ca.

Important Tips to Protect Your Vehicle from Car Thieves

From Ottawa to the GTA we continue to see thefts of high-end Lexus/Toyota vehicles, particularly larger SUVs and 4Runners. We found that an additional technique using signal amplifiers has been used in Eastern Ontario. We recommend you consider an additional line of defense to protect your asset: consider keeping any vehicle with a proximity key fob inside a radio frequency shield device (RSF device).

Provincial investment will help end hallway health care in Ottawa

Hallway health care continues to be a serious challenge for hospitals across Ontario, leaving patients waiting too long for care in aging buildings that do not reflect the quality services delivered by Ontario’s care providers. Last week, Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, was joined by Ottawaarea cabinet members and MPPs, at The Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus to announce that Ontario’s Government for the People is investing up to an additional $9 million to support ongoing planning for the hospital’s redevelopment. This commitment is part of the government’s overall investment of $27 billion over the next 10 years to build new and expanded hospital infrastructure across the province. “By investing in the redevelopment of The Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus, we are protecting

what matters most to patients and families in Ottawa and across Eastern Ontario,” said Elliott. “When completed, the new state-of-the-art facility will reflect the highquality, specialized care that is delivered at this hospital, and will create more capacity and reduce wait times. This project is another example of how our government continues to deliver on our commitment to end hallway health care.” Patients can expect to benefit from a new stateof-the art, teaching facility that will include expanded services for emergency care, in-patient care and specialized regional programs such as trauma, neurosciences and vascular surgery. “We are thankful for the continued excitement and interest around this project from our staff at the hospital, our government partners, and our community,”

said Katherine Cotton, Chair of the Board of Governors of The Ottawa Hospital. “As we move forward, we will continue to engage and to seek solutions that will allow us to build both a 21st-century hospital and a healthier community.” Ontario previously committed up to $3 million for the Civic Campus redevelopment project. Today’s additional investment means Ontario will have invested up to $12 million for the project. The Civic Campus provides primary and secondary hospital services for the local community and is the only hospital in the Champlain region providing complex and specialized services such as regional trauma centre, neurosurgery and vascular surgery. The Ottawa Hospital is a teaching hospital with several sites in the Ottawa area.

· Consider installing a club. ·If you are selling your vehicle, be wary not to let anyone have access to your car keys or your vehicle out of your sight. This prevents a thief from copying your key during a “test drive” so they can return to steal it. The onus is on the registered owner of a vehicle to ensure that the person they let drive their vehicle has a valid driver’s license. As such, request to see their driver’s license prior to allowing them to test drive your vehicle. This gives you an opportunity to

note the person’s identity and home address. Further to that, note the license plate and vehicle description of any individuals who attend your home to enquire about a car for sale. Finally, good old fashioned neighbourhood watch is a great deterrent. Call 911 to report any suspicious activity; be vigilant.

We remind car owners of the following tips to protect their vehicle: · Make your vehicle less vulnerable to theft by parking it in a locked garage and or blocking it in tightly with a second vehicle. · Consider installing an after marker anti-theft device. · Be vigilant that no one has tampered with the door locks mechanisms.
