LCBO threatens legal action against union OPSEU responds by saying it is only for standing up for its members’ safety

While many businesses in Barrhaven are struggling to stay alive until they are able to fully reopen and rebuild their revenue base, reports indicate that the LCBO has had a big increase in sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, that does not mean that the bickering between the crown corporation and OPSEU, the union representing its workers, has come to a standstill.

LCBO stores in Barrhaven are among those in the province that see an increase of hours this week, beginning Thurs., May 14.

Local LCBO outlets will be open from 10a.m. to 9 p.m.

Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sundays. LCBO stores will remain closed on Mondays.

OPSEU President Warren “Smokey” Thomas accused LCBO CEO George Soleas and his executive team of putting profit ahead of the safety of staff employees by expanding hours just before the Victoria Day weekend. Thomas added the longer hours mean more exposure to the threat of COVID-19 by the LCBO frontline staff.

“It’s absolutely appalling that Soleas and his cronies refuse to give hazard pay to their front-line workers but have no qualms about expanding the number of hours they’re potentially exposed to COVID-19,” Thomas said in a statement last Wednesday.

OPSEU said in a Toronto Sun story last week that the LCBO revenues were up 31 per cent during the pandemic, and that the crown corporation chose to reward its employees with donated chocolate bunnies.

“Chocolate is the best LCBO’s senior management can do to recognize the efforts of their employees?

This shows how seriously disconnected from the reality of front-line work they truly are,” said Eduardo Almeida, OPSEU first vicepresident/treasurer.

Earlier in the week, OPSEU condemned the

LCBO’s decision to expand in-store employees’ hours for the May long weekend while not providing hazard pay amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s absolutely appalling that [CEO George] Soleas and his cronies refuse to give hazard pay to their front-line workers but have no qualms about expanding the number of hours they’re potentially exposed to COVID-19,” says Warren Thomas, OPSEU president.

“This is corrupt leadership at its finest – prioritizing your own bottom line above all else.”

The public mudslinging by OPSEU has drawn a response of action by the LCBO. Thomas says the LCBO is going down a road it will quickly regret, by “mindlessly and impetuously threatening legal action” against his union.

After a series of public releases in which OPSEU called out the Crown Corporation’s senior management for numerous pandemic-related issues, including not being proactive regarding health and safety protocols and refusing to provide hazard pay for workers, the LCBO has served a demand letter upon the union.

Thomas said CEO Dr. George Soleas should stop wasting public money on vanity legal challenges and start thinking about and thanking his front line workers.

“Dr. Soleas is an embarrassment to the CEO highflyer club,” said Thomas.

“I’m so sorry you don’t like the fact that we’re doing our job standing up for the health and safety of our members and LCBO customers; we’ll see you in court – Doctor. We look forward to Discoveries and the examination of all internal documents and emails related to labour relations throughout the pandemic.

Thomas added that

While the LCBO is expanding its hours this week, the union representing its workers say the crown corporation is putting profits ahead of the safety of its employees.

Soleas should be on the hook for his own legal counsel.

“I hope Soleas will pay for his own lawyer instead of using LCBO funds for this,” said Thomas. “It’s outrageous that the bosses at the LCBO would so quickly throw money at high-priced Toronto lawyers, yet they moved with the speed of molasses to bring in vital safety measures at the beginning of this pandemic, and have refused to put any funds toward a pandemic premium for essential frontline workers,” said Thomas.

Thomas noted that, while the LCBO has finally implemented safety measures requested by the union, it took weeks of pressure to get the Crown Corporation’s leadership to act on them.

Following this, the LCBO’s senior management communicated a “yahoo plan” to prematurely expand business hours in anticipation of the upcoming holiday weekend.

“The LCBO is a highlyprofitable Crown corporation, which is well-positioned to recognize and properly care for its workers for their selfless efforts during this pandemic. C’mon George, do the right thing – at least this one time,” said Thomas.

As for safety precautions amidst the pandemic, the LCBO said it has rolled out plexiglass barriers at cash

desks across its retail network and it will introduce protective face shields as an “optional preventive measure” for workers serving customers.

Additional precautions have included:

• elevating “already stringent” cleaning and sanitization protocols in-store • increasing accessibility of hand sanitizers for customers and employees at multiple stations within stores

• suspending in-store tastings, LCBO and Vintages events • limiting in-person meetings, cancelling or postponing large-scale events and offering remote work.

COMMUNITY NOTICE

Annual Vegetation Management Program Every year, CN is required to clear its right-of-way from any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure.

As such, for safe railway operations, the annual vegetation control program will be carried out on CN rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified applicator will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (primarily along the 16-feet gravelled area). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be fulfilled.

At this time, we expect that the program will take place from May to October 2020.

Remember the push to build better and smarter suburbs?

Thirty years is a long time in the life of a Community. When I moved to the outskirts of Barrhaven in 1992, it was little more than a small suburb of Ottawa.

I have seen it grow and change to a mini City of 100,000 people. We have mom and pop shops, small businesses, big box stores and major employers ready to put down roots. There are dozens of parks and green spaces, recreation facilities and homes, lots and lots of homes. The next Thirty years will bring even more change, much of it impacted by a decision we at City Council are about to make on the Urban Boundary.

Ottawa’s population is expected to grow by 400,000 by 2046. How to accommodate that growth is the reason we must decide whether or not to expand the urban boundary of the City. It’s already a hot topic, with

developers on one side, environmentalists on the other. City Staff who have been trying to find the right solution are recommending a “balanced approach.” If approved, it could mean 51% of the new homes would be built inside the current urban boundary through intensification but also allows the boundary to expand by 1650 hectares.

Two other options are on the table, but only one, which calls for No expansion, is the most popular.

It would see all new housing inside the current city limits, much of it around transit hubs.

I know which plan I prefer; still, this is not an easy decision.

The Home construc-

tion industry says if the Urban boundary doesn’t expand, they will simply build more housing in outlying communities. That would mean no new developer money for Ottawa, yet the City would still be impacted by traffic coming in from those growing communities. And what would the needed intensification look like? There’s been lots of talk about high rises around transit stations. Will that be attractive to new residents?

The downtown core will have to welcome more residents, but our history of infills isn’t encouraging. Most established neighbourhoods fight them tooth and nail.

Can the City work with developers to build the type of mixed housing that will complement the City and create the 15-minute communities being touted by staff?

I have my doubts.

Remember the push to

build better and smarter suburbs? The plan was to have residential streets that would be functional, not just be populated by cars. We still have driveways that can barely accommodate one vehicle.

Car lined streets that prevent ploughs from passing is still one of the biggest complaints my office deals with.

Another consideration is that Ottawa can’t even provide much-needed infrastructure to new subdivisions we’ve given the green light to.

No new roads, no dedicated bus lanes. Explain how we allowed Costco to build in Barrhaven years before Strandherd Drive would be expanded.

Findlay Creek in the east continues to build homes without any new roads.

Just two examples out of dozens.

We are in a “catchup to keep-up” situation, where the next development pays for the last.

At this rate, nothing will change. If Council is going to consider allowing the urban boundary to expand, it must be willing to find a solution to force planners and developers to ensure growth-related infrastructure is built promptly, and before we permit more sprawl, we must have a plan for Transit that guarantees residents can use it for more than getting to work downtown. That’s cur-

rently a pipe dream.

More than likely, there is a compromise to be had, but until I see a change in the way we do “business as usual,” I will remain a skeptic.

Most of us have heard the saying, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

Well, here we are again, looking at expanding the urban boundary and being told it would be different this time.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Great to see June Flynn-Turner featured in Independent I loved seeing Jeff Morris’ story about June Flynn-Turner in the last issue of the Independent. June was an amazing champion for education at the former Carleton Catholic Board and the Ottawa Carleton Catholic Board.

She served in many capacities including Chair of the Board. She was passionate about students welfare and was a trailblazer without question.

We miss her. Thanks Jeff for a beautiful picture of June and a reminder of someone who crossed our path and made her mark in Barrhaven!

In response to the COVID-19 situation and the recommendations regarding limiting large gatherings and the lead time required by the contractor to secure staffing and preparation of the vehicles, equipment and site, the second Household Hazardous Waste Depot scheduled on May 31 at the Trim Road OC Transpo Park and Ride (1201 Trim Road) has

been cancelled, and other dates are subject to change. Notice is being given now to ensure there is sufficient time for communicating with the public of this change.

Public Works and Environmental Services is working with the contractor to find an alternative date and is communicating the cancellation to the public through 3-1-1 and Ottawa.ca.

Ottawa Police Message

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is warning residents to take extra precautions to secure their bikes from thefts and register with 529 Garage.

In 2020, we have received 83 bike theft reports to-date, compared to 42 at this time last year.

This is due, in part, to: an increase in a series of reported break-ins at highrise apartment buildings and garages across the city; and crimes of opportunity as the temperature rises and people start to go outside more. We have also observed there has generally been a steady increase in reports of bike thefts-across the city in the past few years.

With school districts in some parts of Canada drafting plans to reopen, it’s time we ask: What have we learned about education from the days our school buildings were closed?

We might say we’ve learned during the COVID-19 pandemic that there’s a lot more good out there than we’d have hoped to imagine – a lot of creativity and generosity. New curricula, content, resources, platforms, tools, tips, techniques and technology are being developed – and much of it freely shared.

These quick pivots have been accomplished as schools and families adapted from classroom-based to home-based delivery of education.

Will this experience change our perspectives on teaching and learning, once life gets sorted and school buildings open? What will we learn from this period of … well … home-schooling?

One American think-tank has already declared, “We’re all home-schoolers now.”

But that’s just not correct.

Home-schooling is education that takes place primarily outside a large institutional setting, where parents take final responsibility for the selection, management, provision, and supervision of their child’s education program.

Conversely, teachers were and are the ones designing and largely delivering the learning taking place in homes because of the pandemic. They’re just doing it digitally and not in person.

So it’s e-learning, right?

Pedagogically, no. Nor is it online learning, virtual learning, mobile learning, distance learning, distributed learning or even blended learning.

Some are rightly calling it “emergency remote teaching,” as the primary objective is to provide temporary, quick access to instruction and support.

But the curriculum and learning plans are not designed for online delivery.

The education we’ve experienced during school closures is characterized by its lack of opportunity to plan and the huge pieces of the educational ecosystem that are missing. At this point, it’s still crisis management.

The journey is different for every person. The best school, curriculum, or pedagogy for one person or group may not be the best for another. So why do we keep trying to force kids into the same big educational mould – especially now that we have the technology and capacity to do things differently?

Can the economic shutdown and the immense pressure it has inflicted on education budgets not provide us with an opportunity?

Through this lens, perhaps it’s time we reconsider what can be learned from homeschooling and its potential to nourish deep human flourishing.

Perhaps it’s also time we re-imagine education, in all its diverse forms, and how a truly pluralistic education ecosystem benefits all, not just a few.

Now is the time to refine our education programs’ design and delivery so innovation, adaptability and creativity aren’t just features of our disaster response, but how we educate every day.

The Editor, We are in crisis! This is NOT the time to raise taxes.

Imagine, 12% tax hike on people who have just lost their job or their business. But it is much easier than making hard budget/staffing choices.

Again, this is a crisis situation! Only essential services

for survival should be retained and all other expenses eliminated. Citizens are already sacrificing their normal lives so they would understand the need to streamline our permanent city staff, freeze any new hiring for 2 years and slash all but critical survival services for a few years.

Do the smart thing, not the easy one, and don’t touch reserves. It is now, in this critical time, that they are needed more than ever.

Video of bear at Barrhaven park and ride raises concerns munity is known for its fox and coyote populations, but not creatures of this size. “(It’s) been some time since I seen a bear in Barrhaven,” wrote Gord Lamoureux on the Barrhaven Independent Facebook page. “I have even seen moose in Barrhaven before. One in particular was in someone’s pool back in the day.”

The last time a bear was reported in Barrhaven was in June 2015, when two black bears were spotted roaming around the Stonebridge Golf Course.

That same week, Ottawa Police said they received reports of bears being spotted at Barnsdale Road and Prince of Wales Drive.

In this case, Tso uploaded the video to the Barrhaven Moms Facebook group where it quickly gained a lot of attention, with screenshots of her video being shared all over

By Charlie Senack Barrhaven is known for its many stereotypical names like barbquehaven, beerhaven and of course farhaven. But it can now add bearhaven to the list after after a bear was spotted at Fallowfield’s Park and Ride on Thursday, May 7.

According to an article published by Narcity, Ottawa resident Tia Tso was enjoying some “quiet time” at the park and ride located at Fallowfield station, when something caught her eye.

“I took a double-take as I thought it was a (very) big dog,” Tso told Narcity.

“However, when I realized what I was seeing, I started the video.”

Tso said she called Ottawa Police right away to report the bear sighting.

Wildlife is a common site in Barrhaven, but bears certainly are not. The com-

“Bear at Fallowfied Park and Ride!” wrote Tso in the caption of her post, which was shared widely around the community through social media.

With fewer people out in the community, wildlife has been exploring new territory. A few weeks ago, two moose were seen in a south Ottawa parking lot.

And a day after the bear was spotted in Barrhaven, one was caught strolling through a Brockville familiy’s backyard.

According to the government of Ontario’s website, if you encounter a bear in person you are to stop, remain calm and not to panic. You should also get inside a vehicle or building if possible, and never make direct eye contact with the animal.

for non-emergencies, and local police if you believe the bear poses an immedi-

City permits limited use of spaces in City parks Use of playground equipment and park amenities remains prohibited

The City, in consultation with Ottawa Public Health (OPH), is advising that the limited use of some spaces in City parks and beaches is now permitted. This does not include the use of sports fields and courts.

Effective immediately, individuals and families can enjoy fresh air and some outdoor activities in City parks. Everyone must also comply with current prohibitions under the Provincial Emergency Orders, including the prohibition on organized public events, gatherings of more than five people, and entry to and use of certain outdoor recreational amenities.

OPH continues to advise that limiting activities to members of your own household remains important to limit the

spread of COVID-19 and save lives, and that physical distancing of at least two metres from non-household members be maintained during these activities.

Examples of permitted activities for individuals in groups of up to five people or members from the same household include: - Playing catch, kicking a soccer ball and throwing a football - Flying a kite - Sitting on a blanket, grass or lawn chair Exercising and stretching on a yoga mat, but not in a class - Letting young children run and burn off some energy If you are not with members of your own family, the Provincial Orders continue to restrict

events and gatherings of more than five people and continue to prohibit the entry onto or use of all sports fields and courts (e.g.: football and soccer fields, ball diamonds, tennis courts and basketball courts), BMX and skate/board parks, all play structures and playgrounds, swings, benches, picnic tables, shelters, and off-leash dog areas.

In addition, prohibited park use extends to all organized sporting activities and training, such as football, softball, ball hockey, soccer, ultimate frisbee and basketball – even if they are not being played on a court or sports field, as these activities do not allow for proper physical distancing.

Also in accordance with the Provincial Orders, boat launches in

parks remain closed and seasonal docks will not yet been installed.

Launching any form of watercraft from any City park or beach remains

prohibited for canoeists, kayakers and other watercraft enthusiasts.

Barrhaven Independent 30 years, 30 people: Melanie Gauthier

By Jeff Morris As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, the Barrhaven Independent will be featuring 30 people who have played a prominent role in building and shaping our community from the time we were a sleepy little suburb in 1990 to the thriving city of more than 100,000 we are now.

In this issue, we are featuring Melanie Gauthier.

For years, Melanie was a driving force in the community as a volunteer and philanthropist. She impacted many lives through her involvement in community fundraising campaigns, particularly the popular Chills for CHEO events. She was also visible in the community having worked for both Councillor Jan Harder and MPP Lisa MacLeod. Sadly, she passed away more than four years ago. Her funeral at Capital Memorial Gardens in January, 2016 had a spillover crowd that filled three rooms.

Barrhaven lost a relentless fighter for the community and one of its best citizens when Melanie Gauthier passed away at the young age of 42.

Mel had a sandpaper edge and an acidic sense of humour, but was one of the most giving, loving and selfless heart-and-soul people you could ever meet in your lifetime. Our first reaction was we never thought any of us would see Mel die, for if death dared come near her, she would attack it and fight it and send it away quivering.

I thought about what words or metaphors we could use to describe Mel. She’s so much more than a cliché. Melanie was the first person to drop everything

and to just jump in and do whatever was needed.

She didn’t just jump into problems head first. She jumped in heart first.

Everything she did in this world – everything – she did heart first. There was no halfway with Mel. I thought about the day I met Melanie. She was involved with Chills for CHEO and she contacted me to, well, “inform” me that I would be doing a story. It was the first phone call I took on the day I arrived in Canada after moving back from Seattle. Some people just ease into your life and they are there, but you can’t remember how or for how long. Melanie wasn’t like that. She lunged into our lives, heart first.

And every one she met became one of her friends.

She was always there for us. When you go through a tough or dark time, some people back off and distance themselves from you. Not Melanie. She took on your problem and sorted you out and sat you down at her kitchen table and then made you one of her amazing grilled cheese sandwiches.

She made you feel good about yourself – like there was someone who cared – someone you could count on. She was a real friend – with the purest of hearts and enough soul to fill 10 people.

Her door was always open, whether she had just met you or whether you were one of her seemingly hundreds of best friends.

The kitchen table seemed to be her vortex of life – like the bar everyone would sit at when they went to their pub. Her home was everyone else’s second home, filled with comfort and love, music, and especially laughter.

Yes, laughter like you would never experience anywhere else. Her wit was sharp and delicious, as venomous as it was playful. She loved to make us laugh. As biting as her humour was – it was delivered from her heart.

Her husband, Steph, described her in her obituary as a fierce mother. Her daughters, Brogahn and Lowri, are two wonderful girls who have their mother’s strength and creativity and courage and heart. They still have the coolest mom in the world, it’s just that now she is in Heaven.

I don’t know what Heaven is like, but I imagine Melanie turned the place upside when she arrived. I imagine Melanie has reconnected with some of the people close to her that she has lost.

I hope she has a big kitchen table and she is surrounded by love and laughter. The thing that is most important about Melanie is that she was an angel among us. She was selfless and relentless and did so much good in the world and helped so many people. I can only imagine how many wonderful things she can do in our world now that she is a real angel.

So how do we celebrate Melanie?

There is a lot we can do.

The first thing is remembering not just who she was, but what she stood for. She was Pay it Forward before Pay it Forward became popular. When she immersed herself in something, people would ask her, “Why are you doing this?”

She would always say “Why aren’t you?” or, on the rare occasion that she chose to be diplomatic, “Because it needs to be done.”

We can celebrate her by grabbing some that free spirit that would lead her to take the girls onto the driveway in the pouring rain and dance. We could seize that inner passion that was such a part of her and make every single day count – not for ourselves, but for someone in need. We could be that

shoulder to lean on for a friend in need who may be in a dark or lonely place.

The world needs more Melanies, but since her passing, we are short one.

So why not celebrate Mel by being more like her.

Let’s wonder each day how

Noise exemption granted for local mosques during Ramadan A new noise exemption has being granted to allow mosques to broadcast a five-minute call to prayer at sundown each day until May 23, in recognition of the holy month of Ramadan.

This noise exemption has been permitted in recognition of Ramadan and in light of the Provincial Order prohibiting the gathering of more than five people.

“Since the emergency measures are still in effect, the community is asked to follow the Council’s recently published Ramadan guidelines and recommendations. Pursuant to this bulletin, individual families are asked to form jamaa’ah in their own homes for all the prayers including Taraweeh prayer at night,” said a post on the South Nepean Muslim Centre’s website.

During Ramadan, prayer is an important element for much of the Muslim faithful. Muslims are encouraged to pray and attend a mosque for special services. Nightly prayers called tarawill are common, as is rereading the Quran over the course of the month, often in the form of an epic prayer. At the end of Ramadan, before the final fast is broken, Muslims also recite a prayer called the takbeer, which gives praise to Allah and acknowledges

his supremacy.

Mosques have been holding prayers over a loud speaker in front of their buildings throughout the province. According to Barrhaven Councillor Jan Harder, the sound from the South Nepean Muslim Centre in Barrhaven falls within the city’s acceptable decibel level and does not warrant a noise complaint.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by practicing Muslims as a month of fasting, reflection, and prayer. Ramadan’s dates vary according to the lunar cycle. In 2020, Ramadan began on the evening of Thursday, April 23 and ends on the evening of Saturday, May 23.

According to LearnReligins.com, Ramadan celebrates the date in 610 CE when, according to Islamic tradition, the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. During the month, Muslims the world over are called upon to renew their spiritual commitment through daily fasting, prayer, and acts of charity. Both meals may be communal, but the iftar is an especially social affair when extended families gather to eat and mosques welcome the needy with food.

Kindness playing a big role in Ottawa’s fight against COVID-19

By Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa The residents of Ottawa have experienced some drastic changes over the last couple of months.

We’ve had to make major adjustments to our lifestyles, adapt to new work environments, and plan our days in an entirely new manner. As a person who loves to get out in the community and spend time in all four corners of the city, these changes haven’t been particularly easy for me,

either.

Although much of the news we’re reading and hearing about can take its toll on us, I find it truly heartwarming to see so many residents and businesses in our community who are coming forward to assist others in this time of great need. A few weeks ago, I asked residents to share stories of kindness and ingenuity, and the following examples make me so proud to say I’m the Mayor of this great and compassionate city.

It’s residents mobilizing behind groups like Nepean Neighbours, who are matching volunteers with residents in isolation who need help running errands like picking up groceries and medication, dog walking, and any other need they may have.

It’s local chefs like Joe Thottungal of Thali and Coconut Lagoon, Adam Vettorel of North & Navy, Tim Stock of Thyme & Again, and Patrick Garland of Absinthe, who are providing meals to homeless

residents and low-income families.

It’s medicine students like Pamela Bejjani, Jamie Ghossein, and Daniel Milad, who have created a GoFundMe campaign called “Frontline Feeds Ottawa/ Gatineau” – with the goal of raising money to deliver food from local restaurants to frontline workers on the job, every single day.

It’s musicians like Dave Kalil, who plays live shows on Facebook every Wednesday and Saturday to lift the spirits of his friends.

Dave raised $13,000 in less than an hour during a virtual benefit concert in support of the Ottawa Food Bank. The list goes on and on.

Once again, my sincere thanks to the residents of Ottawa who continue to do their part in planking the curve – staying home and following Ottawa Public Health guidelines. We can change the impact that this pandemic has on our city when we all work together. We can’t forget that COVID-19 affects every-

one, regardless of age and current health status. It is important for all of us to continue to practice physical distancing.

Barrhaven to host 2021 Ont. Little League Championships

The Ontario Little League Championship, scheduled to be played in Barrhaven in July, 2020, has been postponed. However, Barrhaven will be the host for the 2021 Ontario Little League Championships.

The postponement of the tournament was inevitable. The 2020 Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA was cancelled earlier this month.

Nepean MPP and Minister of Sport, Heritage, Tourism and Culture Lisa MacLeod commented

last week that there is not yet a timetable for the return of youth and minor sports in the province.

“Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Ontario, the difficult and disappointing decision has been made by the Executive Committee of Little League Ontario to postpone all 2020 Divisional Championship Tournaments (“Provincials”) to 2021,” read a tweet posted by East Nepean Little League.

“It’s unfortunate for the community, because

this event was going to be a real boost for Barrhaven,” said Councillor Jan Harder. “When it was announced last year that the tournament was going to be here, we were expecting to have our hotels open and that the tournament would bring a lot of revenue into Barrhaven.”

Ontario Little League President Bill Magnus confirmed that the Eagles Nest at Ken Ross Park in Barrhaven would be the site of next year’s event.

“We have postponed all 2020 Divisional Championship Tournaments (‘Provincials’) to 2021 and ‘bumped’ subsequent ones by a year,” Magnus stated. “This means that the 2020 Hosts will become the 2021 Hosts, and that the Tournament Draws that were put in place at the 2019 AGM for 2020 will be used for 2021.”

The Ontario umpires who were nominated to participate at 2020 Canadians are to be re-nominated for the same tournaments in 2021.

IN THIS TOGETHER! Dear Barrhaven, My hope for you is that you are healthy and safe at home during this difficult time. I am so fortunate and blessed to be with my family.

It was a very, very difficult decision to temporarily close our office on March 13th at 1073 Greenbank road and suspend our trading of real estate. It was not done lightly – all members of my team made this decision together from the administrators to the marketing and sales members. I am proud of my team for deciding to put their passion and our livelihood on hold until we all get through this and by fully supporting physical distancing rules and only essential travel. I felt it was in the best interest of my amazing clients, my team, my suppliers, my service providers and of course you the general public. One of the most difficult decisions I have ever made, but one that I feel was important to do our part to support public health efforts.

director are focusing extreme efforts to support the over 500+ businesses in Barrhaven during this brutal time for our small and medium sized businesses. The stories and phone calls I have had with other business leaders, owners, operators, tenants and landlords have been sobering and sad to say the least. Businesses do not operate with 6 months of extra budgeting for situations like this.

So, I beg of you, do all you can to support any and all local businesses that are still allowed to operate here in Barrhaven – or tragically they might not be here when this is over.

I also have great hope that when we all come out of this that you will focus your support and dollars on buying and using services from our Barrhaven businesses – because we will need all the help we can get and can’t be afraid to ask! It is us, your local businesses that sponsor your hockey, ringette, soccer teams, Canada Day celebrations, Barrhaven Santa Parade, 4on4 hockey tourney, Barrhaven Food Cupboard, Barrhaven legion and I could go on. We will need you, our community, to support us as we rebuild our businesses and hope

to continue to offer you great service, increase the great diversity of service offerings and grow more businesses here in our beloved Barrhaven.

It is incredible to see all the good that this community is doing for each other. From making masks, delivering food, buying takeout at local restaurants and the inspiring and supportive sidewalk art, to name just a few. It reminds me why I am so grateful to be raising my family and lucky enough to own my business here in Barrhaven.
