Initiative at St. Patrick School shows ‘our community cares’ By Charlie Senack

One thing that has not been in short supply during the COVID-19 outbreak is kindness. All over town people are finding ways to give back to those who have been hit hardest by the pandemic. At St. Patrick Elementary School on Larkin Drive, one family has set up a grab and go display to support the community. It includes food items, books and games, with a sign at the front door reading “our community cares.” It also encourages people to take one if they are in need and to leave one if able. “A teacher actually emailed me and said I should check out what was in front of the school,” said Principal Greg Rusch. “I went on social media and saw that someone made this arrangement of non-perishable food items, games, hockey sticks and books.” “I was pleasantly surprised about it and I was so

excited that someone from our school community organized this initiative,” he added. “The interesting part of it is we have been trying to figure out who began this initiative.” At this point the family which started it in the first place has remained anonymous, but it’s been well used. “I have been in school with regards to organizing our distribution of devices for our students in need and while I was there I saw people walking by, taking a game or a book and putting a new one into the display,” said Rusch. The school’s principal says they are aware of families in the school community who are struggling during this time with over one million Canadians out of work due to COVID-19. He also said they have been reaching out to the school community to check in on how they are doing and to connect them with resources if needed.
