Moffatt, Brown to square off in Rideau-Goulbourn The field of candidates has been finalized for the October 22 municipal election.

Perhaps the most intriguing campaign – if not the most awkward – pits Rideau-Goulbourn Councillor Scott Moffatt against his former staff member David Brown. Earlier this year, Brown resigned his position from Moffatt’s office to tell his boss he would be challenging him in the election.

Brown, who has also worked for MP Pierre Poilievre, is the President of the Richmond Fair and the Richmond Agricultural Society.

Moffatt is Chair of the Ottawa Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and is seeking his third term on council.

In Gloucester-South Nepean, incumbent Michael Qaqish will also be challenged by four candidates.

The biggest challenge for Qaqish is expected to come from media personality Carol Anne Meehan, who registered on the final day of nominations. Meehan has lived in the GloucesterSouth Nepean Ward for 25 years and is well known throughout Ottawa from her years as the CTV Ottawa news anchor, and more recently her radio work on 1310 News. Other candidates in Ward 22 are Zaff Ansari, who ran for the NDP in the recent provincial election, along with Irene Mei and Harpeet Singh.

Long-time OCDSB trustee Lynn Scott to seek re-election in Zone 1 Lynn Scott, long-time trustee for Zone 1, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, will seek re-election in October.

Zone 1 includes the city wards of Rideau-Goulbourn, West CarletonMarch and Stittsville.

Scott says she is a strong proponent of individualized education, better strategic planning, fiscal accountability and good governance, and believes a strong board with a diversity of experience and knowledge will be needed to address challenges and changes over the next four years, especially with a new government at Queen’s Park.

“I’ve always been able to have a good relationship with the Progres-

The Manotick BIA is once again preparing for what has become its signature showcase event of the year.

The annual Taste of Manotick takes place Sat., Aug. 18 in the village. The event gives local residents and visitors a chance to experience all that Manotick businesses have to offer. Theevent has grown over the years, with thousands crowding a closed off Manotick Main Street, and many more at the Manotick Mews.

“We’re very happy with the participation level, as well as the commitment that Manotick businesses are making to make this event a success,” said Smith.

“We have a lot of visitors that come to Manotick each year specifically for A Taste of Manotick, so we have to make sure we change things up so that it is fresh.”

Rideau-GoulbournREPORT This will be last column before election blackout period in effect

With this being my last column before the October municipal election (more on that later), I wanted to use the beginning of this column to take a moment and remember my grandmother, Hilda Moore, who passed away recently after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

My grandmother was born in 1929 and spent her childhood in Old Ottawa South. She met my grandfather, Sumner Moore, in Constance Bay and they got married at Southminster Church on Bank Street. They would buy a home and begin their family in Carlington before moving to Richmond in 1958. My grandmother would spend 60 years in the village of Richmond.

There, she was involved in a little bit of everything including the Richmond Legion, Richmond Curling Club and the Goulbourn Museum. Many remember her from her 30 years working as an administrator at South Carleton High School, retiring in 1990.

My grandmother was also very active and in-

terested in the political world. She played a significant part in getting me to where I am today, I am grateful for her role in my life, and that my children were able to have such a strong relationship with her. She touched so many lives in her time and she will be greatly missed by my family and many residents in Richmond who remember her fondly.

Election Blackout Period

As mentioned above, this is the last column that I am able to print in the Messenger until after the October 22nd municipal election. City Council adopted an ElectionRelated Resources Policy which includes a “blackout period” in which corporate resources and Member of Council’s office budgets are not to

be used to sponsor any advertisements, flyers, newsletters or householders. The 60-day “blackout period” is in effect from Thursday, August 23, 2018, up to and including Monday, October 22, 2018 (Voting Day).

During the “blackout period”, advertising for City events or services cannot, in broad terms, include the name of any Member of Council who is also a candidate.

For any pressing City matter, we will make sure that those items are provided to the Village Voice for Manotick issue and the Richmond Hub for Richmond issues. For other areas of the ward, there is a protocol for how matters can be communicated to ensure proper notification still occurs in the meantime.

and they all have a good following,” Smith said. “We will also have face painters and a stilt walker from Montreal, among other activities.”

Manotick Lions Club unable to continue as Santa Parade organizers ever-increasing number of barricades requested by the City of Ottawa was well received and resulted in placing off all 30 barricades, placing and collecting of the barricades proved difficult for the three Lions still able to carry out this task and the one truck that is available.

Other difficulties involve licenses and insurance for the event.

In view of the above the Manotick Lions Club will not be able to organize the event this year. We will however, be willing to help any other organ-

ization wishing to take it over.

Relieving the Canadian Idol dream 10 years later By

We sat in a circle.

There were eight of us, sitting in a room at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. We were all media members from different parts of Canada.

Ann MacGregor of Pictou County, Nova Scotia was very matter-of-factly when she stood up to introduce herself.

“I’m going to apologize to you in advance, because a lot of you will be better than me,” she said. “But I am going to win.”

We smiled and laughed, thinking she was just having fun with us.

“No, seriously,” she said. “You don’t understand. Pictou County is the reality television voting capital of Canada.

The entire county is sitting there with their fingers on their keyboards, ready to vote. The café in town is open 24 hours for this so people can come in and vote all night long.

You guys really don’t stand a chance against this.”

And sure enough, 10 years ago this week, Ann MacGregor was the winner of the last Canadian Media Idol singing competition. In fact, she collected more votes than the rest of us combined.

“That’s how JD Fortune won the contest to become the lead singer of INXS on that reality show,” she said. “He was from Pictou County. In fact, while this was going on, he slept on our couch for a while.”

Manotick newlywed wants to be re-united with paddle after weekend mishap My husband Steve and I made a little bet while playing cards on Saturday afternoon. The loser bought the beer.

I won of course and Steve suggested that we go kayaking from the Manotick Bridge down to Kelly’s Landing Restaurant not knowing how far it really was by kayak.

We embarked on this adventure at about 4:30p.m. with two kayaks, one paddle and Coco, our Chihuahua.

In retrospect, it probably wasn’t such a smart idea to have only one paddle between the two of us.

We thought we’d share – half each. It sounded like a good idea at the time. So off we went! My winner’s beer was waiting at the end of our kayak ex-

pedition.

To make a long story short, I fell way behind hubby.

A nice boater came

I was so looking forward to catching up and/

or passing my new Welsh husband of two months.

Well it didn’t turn out that way.

Coco and I were reunited with hubby. But

we are still missing half a paddle.

The East Nepean Eagles are off to a good start at the Canadian Junior Little League Championships in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The Eagles defeated Medicine Hat 8-7 Monday ( July 30) for a comefrom-behind victory.

The Eagles scored five runs in the fifth inning.

Catcher Liam Finn had a pair of hits and scored two runs, while Tyson Normand also had two hits and drove in one. Calder Kuseler, Aiden Duncan, Brayden Goldberg, Hayden Wellstead, Eric Tao and Dom Vizzari all added hits.

Nicholan Hum scored two runs with one each going to Matt Fahey, Kuseler, Tao and Vizari.

Normand was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out one

in two and two-thirds innings of work. Gold-

berg started the game and allowed four runs

– three earned – on two hits and four walks,

while Fahey pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on two hits.

The Eagles did not

fare as well in their next three games. They lost to Fraser Valley, BC 129, Mirabel, QC 16-3 and host Lethbridge 6-5.

New executive chef to bring a Taste of Manotick Place Manotick Place Retirement Community Executive Director Linda Meek has announced the appointment of Dat Tran as their new Executive Chef.

Originally from a Chinese family, Tran was born in Vietnam and moved to Canada as a child. He grew up in Kitchener, ON, which he reminds us is the home of the second largest Oktoberfest in the world.

Tran went to school at McMaster and graduated with a B. Sc. He then lived and worked in and around the GTA, and then spent several years abroad in Taiwan.

“Once I decided to pursue a Culinary Career, I moved to Ottawa and enrolled in the Culinary Program at Le Cordon Bleu,” he said.

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, he worked in some well renowned restaurants, such as Zen Kitchen, where his team took home the silver medal at the Gold Medal Plates Competition two years in a row. He continued to work in many scratch restaurants and received the AAA 3 Diamond Award while running a small Italian Bistro he owned in the Byward Market. Most recently, he was the Executive Chef at the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence.

“My love of Manotick and the country atmosphere has brought me to Manotick Place and I would like to evolve my menus to add some lovely country flare to my fine dining roots,” Tran said.

As you may know, I have been working closely with city staff, local developers and Councillor Darouze to help advance infrastructure for Findlay Creek and Leitrim.

Although there were no plans to widen Bank Street before 2024, we have successfully been able to advance the first part of this project including the design for the widening as well as the intersection modification component – with construction set to begin next year. I am pleased to report that we are now in the 90% design stage, which is a significant milestone for the project. Softball donation Each year, the Manotick Masters Softball League selects a local charity to support in an annual fund raiser. Last month, at Centennial Park, a $1000.00 cheque was presented to Natasha Hollywood from the University of Ottawa Brain & Mind Institute for concussion research. A big thank you to Kevin MacDonald and his committee and to all the ball players for their commitment to the community.

The event will take place at Claudette Cain Park, 660 River Road, South Field.

Admission will be $2 per person and treats and refreshments will be available to purchase as well.

Osgoode WardREPORT Civic Blade Sign Replacement Program a success in Osgoode Ward

Over the past two weeks I have been out in the community, many of you having seen or spoken with me while I was delivering sign blades. I have been hearing great feedback about my Civic Blade Sign Replacement program, for the way it has helped bring awareness to the importance of having a proper civic sign at the end of your driveway!

Civic signs are a public safety tool used by our Emergency Response Services to identify your home, should you require emergency assistance. Public safety is a major concern of mine and I am proud of this program.

Many resident have asked why not everyone is receiving a civic blade under the program. I wish I could have replaced all the blades in the ward; however, this one-time program had limited funding and was only possible by showing that the main roads in the Ward had rusted faster than they should due to the road salt
