Moffatt, Brown to square off in Rideau-Goulbourn The field of candidates has been finalized for the October 22 municipal election. Perhaps the most intriguing campaign – if not the most awkward – pits Rideau-Goulbourn Councillor Scott Moffatt against his former staff member David Brown. Earlier this year, Brown resigned his position from Moffatt’s office to tell his boss he would be challenging him in the election. Brown, who has also worked for MP Pierre Poilievre, is the President of the Richmond Fair and the Richmond Agricultural Society. Moffatt is Chair of the Ottawa Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and is seeking his third term on council.
In Gloucester-South Nepean, incumbent Michael Qaqish will also be challenged by four candidates. The biggest challenge for Qaqish is expected to come from media personality Carol Anne Meehan, who registered on the final day of nominations. Meehan has lived in the GloucesterSouth Nepean Ward for 25 years and is well known throughout Ottawa from her years as the CTV Ottawa news anchor, and more recently her radio work on 1310 News. Other candidates in Ward 22 are Zaff Ansari, who ran for the NDP in the recent provincial election, along with Irene Mei and Harpeet Singh.

Long-time OCDSB trustee Lynn Scott to seek re-election in Zone 1 Lynn Scott, long-time trustee for Zone 1, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, will seek re-election in October. Zone 1 includes the city wards of Rideau-Goulbourn, West CarletonMarch and Stittsville. Scott says she is a strong proponent of individualized education, better strategic planning, fiscal accountability and good governance, and believes a strong board with a diversity of experience and knowledge will be needed to address challenges and changes over the next four years, especially with a new government at Queen’s Park. “I’ve always been able to have a good relationship with the Progres-

sive Conservative MPPs representing the area,” she says. “We need to work together to provide the best possible education to all students, regardless of their individual needs. The funding formula needs to be re-examined, and another round of collective bargaining will begin in 2019.” The biggest news locally from Scott’s last term was the announcement of a new high school in Stittsville, which will alleviate potential crowding issues at South Carleton High School. “The announcement of funding for a new public high school in Stittsville was great news,” says Scott, “but
tation processes more effective are on her list. Scott anticipates a new strategic plan, with a new Director of Education, that will embrace new data to support equity and diversity, but she cautions that the board must not forget that behind every number, behind every label, there’s a unique student with a unique family and unique needs. “As a trustee, my most rewarding moments have come when a parent or student approaches me at an event to say that something I’ve said or done has made a positive difference in a child’s life,” she says. “With every policy, every budget decision, I have to think of the impact on students.”
there’s still a lot of work to be done, including the complex task of setting an attendance boundary for the new school. We’ll need to optimize the use of every dollar to create a design with the flexibility to serve evolving learning needs over at least the next 50 years. After advocating for this school for so long, I can’t walk away without finishing the job!” Scott says the biggest challenges facing the board are improving student achievement – especially in math – addressing dwindling enrolment in the regular English program, finding better ways to deal with student behavior issues, and making advisory committees and consul-

George Darouze, who won the seat after Thompson’s retirement, will be challenged by Auguste Banfalvi, Mark Scharfe, Kim Sheldrick and Jay Tisick. In the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, Zone 1 trustee Lynn Scott will be running against four challengers. Jon Flemming, Gurprit Kindra, Ken Lumsden and Brandon Rabideau have all registered as candidates. Running for the Zone 7 trustee, which covers the Gloucester-South Nepean and Osgoode Wards, are Jennifer Jennekens and Kim Woods. Ottawa Catholic School Board Zone 1 trustee John Curry and Zone 4 trustee
Spencer Warren will win their seats by acclamation. For the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario, Denis Labrèche and Samia Oueled Ali will be running in Zone 12. Chad Mariage will be acclaimed as the trustee representing Rideau-Goulbourn and Gloucester-South Nepean for the Conseil des écoles catholiques du centre-est, while Monique Briand will be acclaimed in Zone 10, which includes Osgoode. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson is being challenged by 10 candidates. Hamid Alakozai, Ahmed Bouragba, Bernard Couchman, Clive Doucet, Joey Drouin, Ryan Lithall, Craig MacAulay, Bruce McConville, Michael Pastien, Moises Schachtler and James Sheahan will be up against Watson, who is seeking his third consecutive term as Mayor.

The MessengerCOMMUNITY A Taste of Manotick has grown to become BIA’s signature event
The Manotick BIA is once again preparing for what has become its signature showcase event of the year. The annual Taste of Manotick takes place Sat., Aug. 18 in the village. The event gives local residents and visitors a chance to experience all that Manotick businesses have to offer. Theevent has grown over the years, with thousands crowding a closed off Manotick Main Street, and many more at the Manotick Mews. Manotick BIA Execu-
tive Director Donna Smith indicated that between 55 and 60 Manotick businesses are taking part in the event. “We’re very happy with the participation level, as well as the commitment that Manotick businesses are making to make this event a success,” said Smith. “We have a lot of visitors that come to Manotick each year specifically for A Taste of Manotick, so we have to make sure we change things up so that it is fresh.”

Rideau-GoulbournREPORT This will be last column before election blackout period in effect
With this being my last column before the October municipal election (more on that later), I wanted to use the beginning of this column to take a moment and remember my grandmother, Hilda Moore, who passed away recently after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia. My grandmother was born in 1929 and spent her childhood in Old Ottawa South. She met my grandfather, Sumner Moore, in Constance Bay and they got married at Southminster Church on Bank Street. They would buy a home and begin their family in Carlington before moving to Richmond in 1958. My grandmother would spend 60 years in the village of Richmond. There, she was involved in a little bit of everything including the Richmond Legion, Richmond Curling Club and the Goulbourn Museum. Many remember her from her 30 years working as an administrator at South Carleton High School, retiring in 1990. My grandmother was also very active and in-

terested in the political world. She played a significant part in getting me to where I am today, I am grateful for her role in my life, and that my children were able to have such a strong relationship with her. She touched so many lives in her time and she will be greatly missed by my family and many residents in Richmond who remember her fondly.
Election Blackout Period
As mentioned above, this is the last column that I am able to print in the Messenger until after the October 22nd municipal election. City Council adopted an ElectionRelated Resources Policy which includes a “blackout period” in which corporate resources and Member of Council’s office budgets are not to
be used to sponsor any advertisements, flyers, newsletters or householders. The 60-day “blackout period” is in effect from Thursday, August 23, 2018, up to and including Monday, October 22, 2018 (Voting Day). During the “blackout period”, advertising for City events or services cannot, in broad terms, include the name of any Member of Council who is also a candidate. For any pressing City matter, we will make sure that those items are provided to the Village Voice for Manotick issue and the Richmond Hub for Richmond issues. For other areas of the ward, there is a protocol for how matters can be communicated to ensure proper notification still occurs in the meantime. Please be assured that the only thing impacted here is how we communicate in print. My office will still be attentive to anything that comes their way. Should you have any questions or concerns on anything, email my office
taste continues from page 4 Manotick Main Street will be closed from 4-8 p.m. on Aug. 18 for the event. There will be two stages set up on Manotick Main Street, and there will also be entertainment as well as a car show going on at the Manotick Mews. One of the most anticipated entertainers
will be Dr. Draw, an extreme violinist and beat boxer who has become a national sensation on You Tube. The bands playing at the event will be Sticks ‘n Stones, Johnny Vegas, Tequila and Cougar Bait. “The bands are all local bands from the area or from Ottawa,
and they all have a good following,” Smith said. “We will also have face painters and a stilt walker from Montreal, among other activities.” For more information and updates on A Taste of Manotick, visit the Manotick BIA Facebook page or website at Manotickvillage.com.

Manotick Lions Club unable to continue as Santa Parade organizers ever-increasing number of barricades requested by the City of Ottawa was well received and resulted in placing off all 30 barricades, placing and collecting of the barricades proved difficult for the three Lions still able to carry out this task and the one truck that is available. Other difficulties involve licenses and insurance for the event. In view of the above the Manotick Lions Club will not be able to organize the event this year. We will however, be willing to help any other organ-
ization wishing to take it over. I understand from various businesses that yes they are busy on that day, but we need to keep our community alive.

The Editor, The Manotick Lions Club have organized the Santa Claus parade for approximately 20 years. This has become more and more difficult due to decreasing membership to single digits and older members. Additional problems for this year are the disappearance of our nine reindeers without which Santa will not participate. Relieving the Canadian Idol dream 10 years later By
the real Jeff Morris
We sat in a circle. There were eight of us, sitting in a room at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. We were all media members from different parts of Canada. Ann MacGregor of Pictou County, Nova Scotia was very matter-of-factly when she stood up to introduce herself. “I’m going to apologize to you in advance, because a lot of you will be better than me,” she said. “But I am going to win.” We smiled and laughed, thinking she was just having fun with us. “No, seriously,” she said. “You don’t understand. Pictou County is the reality television voting capital of Canada. The entire county is sitting there with their fingers on their keyboards, ready to vote. The café in town is open 24 hours for this so people can come in and vote all night long. You guys really don’t stand a chance against this.” And sure enough, 10 years ago this week, Ann MacGregor was the winner of the last Canadian Media Idol singing competition. In fact, she collected more votes than the rest of us combined. “That’s how JD Fortune won the contest to become the lead singer of INXS on that reality show,” she said. “He was from Pictou County. In fact, while this was going on, he slept on our couch for a while.” CTV held the Canadian Media Idol competition as a way to promote Canadian Idol. They would bring celebrity judge Sass Jordan to various cities across Canada, while members of the media would sing. The winner of each city would get $1,000 for the charity of

Manotick newlywed wants to be re-united with paddle after weekend mishap My husband Steve and I made a little bet while playing cards on Saturday afternoon. The loser bought the beer. I won of course and Steve suggested that we go kayaking from the Manotick Bridge down to Kelly’s Landing Restaurant not knowing how far it really was by kayak. We embarked on this adventure at about 4:30p.m. with two kayaks, one paddle and Coco, our Chihuahua. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t such a smart idea to have only one paddle between the two of us. We thought we’d share – half each. It sounded like a good idea at the time. So off we went! My winner’s beer was waiting at the end of our kayak ex-
pedition. To make a long story short, I fell way behind hubby. A nice boater came
along an offered to tow me towards Kelly’s Landing. I was so looking forward to catching up and/
or passing my new Welsh husband of two months. Well it didn’t turn out that way. The kayak with Coco and me in it inexplicably flipped over. Coco and I were wet, but uninjured. Coco swam safely to
shore. The young man with the boat jumped in the Rideau River and swam me and my kayak to the shore, too. Hubby missed seeing all of this! Coco and I were reunited with hubby. But
we are still missing half a paddle. The kayak capsized near a house that’s under construction. If anyone found a half of a paddle, can they please contact me at diane_dinelle@yahoo.ca.

The sharrow exists because of the left-hand turn lanes for traffic turning into the small cul de sac on the north and west bound traffic heading to Dickinson Square and side streets on the south. cation to change the Stonebridge Golf Course to enable them to build 158 units. This is good news for the surrounding community who lobbied hard to save the golf course. A new four pump gas station may be built on Roger Stevens Drive adjacent to Tubman Funeral Home in the future. The City received an application for construction of a station along with a convenience store and drive-thru. The proposed project complies with the current zoning bylaws for that site. Readers of this column will know that I am interested in history - local history, antiques, old homes and stores, street names, people, anything old - I should know about old because ...old yes but not an antique yet! Recently I was given an old magazine “The Easter Woman’s Home Companion” April 1912!! The magazine has 106 pages about

Silverware” - “Woodbury’s Facial Soap” - “Thomas Edison Phonograph” - “Jell-o” - “Welch’s Grape Juice” - “Scott Paper Towel Co.” “Colgate Soaps” - “Palmolive Soap” - “Lea &

There is a full-page story about Germany’s Crown Princess Cecilie, who was one of Europe’s most popular Princesses. Another full page is titled “Letters to Grandma”. Another full page is all about “The Garden of Hardy

Shrubs”. A full page is called “ Ten Woman’s Club Programs”. How about this one, “Getting Rid of the Housefly”. Another column is all about recipes for “Delicious Soups”. Q: How can I get rid of this wart??
Q: Why does your dental plan pay less than what your dentist charges?
Q: What should I do when there is a pet food recall?
A: A wart is a growth on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that looks like a solid blister or hard bump. The virus is contracted by touching something a wart has touched such as a towel, doorknob, or Pharmacist floor. Therefore, warts most commonly grow on the hands or feet. To prevent spreading, do not pick or scratch a wart, keep it covered and wash your hands after touching. Warts may actually go away on their own but more commonly require treatment if painful, bothersome, unsightly or long-lasting. There is no ideal remedy but options include various over-the-counter products such as liquid, gel, pads, freeze/cold therapy which can be found and discussed with your pharmacist at the pharmacy. A doctors visit may be required for stubborn warts or stronger treatment options.

Safety and transparency from a food company is Dr. Andrew Sparling paramount, and only a canine or D.V.M. feline nutritionist or a member of your veterinary care team can help you understand what is important for your pet’s nutritional needs. Don’t be misled by savvy marketing! Discuss your pet’s nutritional needs with your veterinary team, then make sure the company you choose has a solid safety record and is transparent about all their nutritional information.

New executive chef to bring a Taste of Manotick Place Manotick Place Retirement Community Executive Director Linda Meek has announced the appointment of Dat Tran as their new Executive Chef. Originally from a Chinese family, Tran was born in Vietnam and moved to Canada as a child. He grew up in Kitchener, ON, which he reminds us is the home of the second largest Oktoberfest in the world. Tran went to school at McMaster and graduated with a B. Sc. He then lived and worked in and around the GTA, and then spent several years abroad in Taiwan. “Once I decided to pursue a Culinary Career, I moved to Ottawa and enrolled in the Culinary Program at Le Cordon Bleu,” he said. After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, he worked in some well renowned restaurants, such as Zen Kitchen, where his team took home the silver medal at the Gold Medal Plates Competition two years in a row. He continued to work in many scratch restaurants and received the AAA 3 Diamond Award while running a small Italian Bistro he owned in the Byward Market. Most recently, he was the Executive Chef at the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence. “My love of Manotick and the country atmosphere has brought me to Manotick Place and I would like to evolve my menus to add some lovely country flare to my fine dining roots,” Tran said. “Food is such an important part of our lives,”

he added. “Not only do we need it for nourishment, but we have also turned the act of eating into a social event, where we can sit down and have a wonderful time with our friends and family. I would like to take what I learned from the restaurant world to retirement homes, so having a meal here will be like having a meal at a nice restaurant. I have always worked
in scratch kitchens, and have brought those ideals with me to Manotick Place where we make everything from scratch. After spending the past two months getting settled in, I have started to bring in local seasonal fruits and vegetables. I will be looking to partner up with local farms near Manotick, and showcasing the fine produce they grow!”

Although there were no plans to widen Bank Street before 2024, we have successfully been able to advance the first part of this project including the design for the widening as well as the intersection modification component – with construction set to begin next year. I am pleased to report that we are now in the 90% design stage, which is a significant milestone for the project. Osgoode WardREPORT Civic Blade Sign Replacement Program a success in Osgoode Ward
Over the past two weeks I have been out in the community, many of you having seen or spoken with me while I was delivering sign blades. I have been hearing great feedback about my Civic Blade Sign Replacement program, for the way it has helped bring awareness to the importance of having a proper civic sign at the end of your driveway! Civic signs are a public safety tool used by our Emergency Response Services to identify your home, should you require emergency assistance. Public safety is a major concern of mine and I am proud of this program. Many resident have asked why not everyone is receiving a civic blade under the program. I wish I could have replaced all the blades in the ward; however, this one-time program had limited funding and was only possible by showing that the main roads in the Ward had rusted faster than they should due to the road salt
