Celebrate The Holiday Season Safely

The holidays are going to look a little different this year due to COVID-19. To support Ontarians as they begin to safely plan for the season, the Ontario government, based on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and input from the Public Health Measures Table, is providing preliminary guidance on how to safely celebrate this year and protect your loved ones.

Details were provided on November 25 by the Premier, the Deputy Premier and Min-

ister of Health, and the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

No matter where you live in the province, the safest way to spend the holidays this year is by only celebrating in person with the people you live with and celebrating virtually with everyone else. If you live alone, consider exclusively celebrating with one additional household as a safe way to spend the holidays.

Ontario Deploys Rapid Testing To Support Covid-19 Response

The Ontario government has deployed new COVID-19 rapid tests to provide faster results in regions of high transmission and rural and remote areas. As an additional tool to help keep essential workers safe, rapid tests will also be used to screen staff in longterm care homes and select workplaces. These new tests will provide Ontarians with more access to innovative testing options and will help to

quickly identify and manage outbreaks to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Ontario has received approximately 98,000 ID NOW tests that are initially being used in hospitals and assessment centres in rural and remote communities, as well as to test people as part of early outbreak investigations in hotspot regions where there are high concentrations of COVID-19 cases. Two hospitals are using ID NOW, with 20 additional hospitals preparing to launch rapid testing. Hospitals will be able to test people, such as staff and patients, who are either symptomatic or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

The province has also received 1.2 million Panbio rapid antigen tests that will support a screening program for longterm care homes and other workplaces. To date, Panbio tests have been deployed to six long-term care operators for potential deployment in over

30 long-term care homes, 27 retirement homes, eight hospitals, and 11 industry partners such as Ontario Power Generation, Air Canada and Magna, with plans to expand further across province. Ontario is expecting to receive up to 1.5 million more Panbio tests by the end of December.

Over the next number of weeks, select long-term care homes will use the Abbott Panbio rapid antigen tests to help inform future deployment across the sector.

Panbio tests will also be used in a broader eight-week pilot for participating employers in the private, public and non-profit sectors, prioritizing access for health care settings, essential frontline settings, and congregate settings. This pilot program is an important opportunity to learn about the value of antigen screening for asymptomatic workers in a range of workplace settings and will inform future decisions about safely and fully re-

opening the economy. Participating employers would cover associated costs of delivering antigen rapid tests including human resource expenses and ensure testing follows guidelines as set by the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

As both ID NOW and Panbio tests are new, they will be carefully evaluated and used in alignment with guidance from Health Canada.

Christmas tree sale tradition continues for Kiwanis Club

This year, with the uncertainty of Covid-19, our cherished community and family traditions have been under attack. More than ever, we long to put ‘normal’ back in our lives, safely and carefully. This coming Christmas holiday season gives us a wonderful opportunity to regain that balance, to reaffirm our resolve to stay healthy while cherishing our most important values.

In our home, Christmas always seems to arrive too early yet depart before you know it. December passes like a whirlwind, seeing friends and attending special events, never leaving enough time to appreciate its sparkle and wonder.

This year, with fewer distractions, we are looking forward to the joys of a quiet Christmas. And the magic of a real Christmas tree in the corner that contributes to that normalcy and well-being.

The Kiwanis Club of Manotick has brought Christmas trees to families in the village for the past 60 years. Located conveniently in the Mews, beside Home Hardware, the Club is again offering beautiful Fraser Fir, Balsam and Scotch Pine trees for sale, in sizes ranging from 5 to over 12 feet. These wonderful Kris Kringle trees from Somerville Nurseries in Everett, Ontario continue to be the best trees available on the market.

Dedicated Kiwanis members will make your

selection of the perfect tree both safe and rewarding, while respecting proven Covid-19 protocols. We require that everyone wear a mask when at the lot, and to the extent possible, keep their distance from others.

On busy weekends, don’t be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes before being safely able to enter, so we can avoid crowding. You may see fewer trees on the lot, and more space for people, but by no means will selection be reduced. Friendly Kiwanis volunteers will help ensure you get the best tree, give it a fresh cut and, if necessary, help get it to your vehicle for the trip home. This year, because Kiwanis is also experiencing volunteer shortfalls like everyone else, we will

provide tie downs for your tree but ask that you secure it to your vehicle yourself so we can return to serve others more promptly.

In fact, if you find you have a few spare hours and would be willing to assist at the lot, please speak with any Kiwanis member and we will be delighted to find a task for you. Unloading Christmas trees that arrive on Wednesday morning, December 2 is one event we would really appreciate having help with, as those groups we normally rely on are unable to support us this year.

You will find our terrific Christmas cakes on sale at the lot, in Home Hardware, and in a number of village stores. Please remember that all funds

raised by selling these trees and cakes go to charitable causes in our community; during the pandemic, these are our only sources of revenue. As a service club, we raise money to help the community, but our ability to do this relies on your support. Bringing home a great tree to help celebrate Christmas also

supports your community.

Talk about a good news story!

The tree lot will be open every day from Saturday, November 28th until Christmas week, between 11:00AM and 6PM on weekdays, from 12 to 6 on Saturdays and 12 to 5 on Sundays. Hope to see you there!

Dale Davidson celebrates 60 years with the Manotick Kiwanis Club

By Brian Cromie A lot of important things happened in 1960. John F. Kennedy was elected President, the US entered the long Vietnam War and had one of their U2 reconnaissance planes shot down, Chubby Checker got everyone dancing the Twist, when they weren’t drinking sodas from the new aluminum cans. Lots happened that year.

Closer to home, a group of 25 civic-minded men from the community met at the Rideau Glen restaurant on Hwy. 16, to consider creating a service club in Manotick. What resulted was the Kiwanis Club, and the rest as they say, is history. The Club was chartered on November 22, 1960, and this year celebrates its 60th anniversary in Manotick.

One of those founding members was Dale Davidson. At that time, he was both the youngest of the group and the most enthusiastic. Now, Dale is the last man standing, the only Char-

ter Member still with us.

Small in stature, a fact he regularly gets kidded about by his friends, Dale makes up for it with a huge heart.

It is that sense of caring for others that got him involved in every project the new Club took on.

In the early days, Kiwanis members sold things, like peanuts and chocolates, to fund raise. Dale and his colleagues would also go out to local tree farms in late November and December and cut Christmas trees to sell in the village. It got a little easier when the Club began to buy from professional arborists, but even then, Dale would drive to the Eastern Townships or to central Ontario to discuss his needs with growers. Although he no longer works a regular shift at the tree lot, Dale can often be seen there, making sure everything is maintained up to his high standards. Sixty years of experience gives you that right.

In the early days, Dale was part of the Club’s efforts to teach children to swim in

Mud Creek, and to ski on the hill behind Jack May’s car dealership. He played a mean game of softball himself. Although never a player, for many years Dale ran the Club’s involvement in a charity bingo that, along with the sale of Christmas Trees and cakes, allows the Kiwanis Club to put between $40,000 and $60,000 a year back into the community.

These fundraising activities have helped build the community pool, start a public library in the Ayer’s Building, finish then later expand the Manotick Arena, help repair the Mill roof, build the dock at Mahogany Harbour, erect children’s climbing structures in parks and school yards, and other projects too numerous to mention. Over the 60 years that Dale has been a Kiwanian, this totals over $2M, not including the

many thousands of free volunteer labour hours given to the community.

Dale and his longsuffering wife Mary have and continue to be among Manotick’s greatest supporters.

While Mary ran a women’s clothing store in the Mews, Dale owned and operated an auto repair shop on River Road. Over those years, they have seen lots of change but their dedication to Manotick

has never wavered. As a 60-year member of the Manotick Kiwanis Club, this village salutes Dale Davidson, one of our true better angels, for a lifetime of dedicated community support.

The Key Club is an organization that is student led and promotes leadership skills as well as an opportunity to give back to the community through services and volunteering. These Key Clubs have been remarkably busy this Fall, they have been meeting online this year through

Zoom or Google Meet. Although they are dealing with Covid-19 restrictions, learning at school or at home, they have found many ways to help others.

The Barrhaven Longfields Davidson High School Key Club preformed volunteer park clean-up in September.

During October they sent letters of appreciation to front line workers. During November and December, they will be participating in sales of Kiwanis Christmas Cakes.

A lack of judgement Both of our rural South Ottawa Councillors have been in the middle of their own respective storms this week.

One definitely involved a lack of judgement, while the other involved what many perceive as a lack of judgement.

Osgoode Councillor George Darouze was on a City of Ottawa Committee Zoom call AND texting while driving. At least he wasn’t also eating a breakfast sandwich from Tim’s and opening up packs of hockey cards while he was driving.

Darouze did the right thing and turned himself in and paid the hefty fine. But it still baffles everyone how this could even happen. City of Ottawa Zoom calls are all broadcast on the city’s YouTube channel. How could Darouze not realize this would be out there for everyone to see?

Councillor Scott Moffatt, meanwhile, made some comments that rubbed a lot of residents the wrong way with regard to renaming Rideau-Goulbourn.

We agree with the Councillor in that it is time to move on from the name Goulbourn. Henry Goulburn – we still don’t know where the extra “o” came from in the name of the township and ward – was the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies during the Elizabethan era. He was also a slave owner, as he inherited a 2,000-acre sugar plantation in Jamaica that used slave labour. There are reports that the slaves on that plantation were viciously treated, although one biographer called Goulburn a slave owner with a conscious. Goulbourn never visited Jamaica.

While Goulburn never stepped foot in Jamaica, he also never stepped foot in Canada. The Goulburn family did not settle the area. They were not pioneers here.

Goulburn had no impact whatsoever on the area. Removing his name is in no way erasing history.

With the social temperature cranked up, and rightly so, on issues of racism, perhaps it is time to move on from the random and misspelled name of a slave owner.

But Moffatt spoke out of turn when he claimed that a discussion on the name change would be a “very dangerous discussion to have.”

The discussion has to be had. If it is done by Zoom, the moderator has a mute button if anything said crosses the line of danger. Moffatt is rebranding the Ward as Ward 21, and he has changed his website to teamtwentyone.ca. That’s okay, but the public needs to play a role in this, regardless of if the councillor feels we, as the ward’s residents, can handle the conversation or not.

As for a new name, we think it’s simple. Everyone in Manotick, Richmond, Kars, North Gower and parts between have always identified with South Carleton.

The South Carleton Ward would be a perfect name for Ward 21.

But could we misspell Carleton with an extra “o”, just to preserve local history?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Erasing history is not the way to make history The Editor, Councillor Scott Moffatt’s decision to change our Ward’s name has stirred up the countryside.

I’ve read the different editorials from Scott and those members of the public who have spoken out.

What I take issue with is Scott’s superior attitude.

The Councillor has decided without any public consultation that a name

change is in his residents’ best interests. No public consultation, no desire to hear other viewpoints.

By all accounts, the historical connection between our township and Henry Goulburn’s is a weak one. Scott said Goulbourn’s history is a proud one that is not tarnished by Goulburn. If that is the case, why is Scott sweeping it under

the rug? This is an educational moment for those alive today as well as the generations to come. Instead of changing a name for political points, why not work with the Goulbourn Museum and Goulbourn Historical Society to educate the public. I think this is one of those times where the over used statement teachable moment should be used.

Goulbourn Township does not need a namesake.

With a history as long and proud as ours is, why can Goulbourn not simply be Goulbourn, named in honour of those who settled the area and the many generations who have come after them?

Scott has silenced the residents in Rideau-Goulbourn Ward by stating that a conversation on this sub-

ject is a dangerous one.

How can learning about our history be dangerous, again a teachable moment.

What is dangerous is having an elected representative force a change on 30,000 residents without public input. What’s next?

This is a crucial moment in our Ward’s history, Scott. Please treat your residents with re-

spect and allow for a full conversation on the issue.

It is your responsibility to represent us and our viewpoints properly.

I look forward to the announcement of the public consultation dates.

Don’t erase our history.

Your residents expect more from you.

Weak connection to Goulbourn’s history may lead to name change The Editor, Ottawa City Councillor Scott Moffatt recently announced to his constituents that he wants to change the name of Rideau-Goulbourn ward before the 2022 municipal election because he has discovered a connection between the old Township of Goulbourn and what he calls the area’s namesake, Henry Goulburn (note the different spelling) who was apparently an absentee slave owner in the early 1800’s.

Moffatt maintains that although Henry Goulburn never visited the Township and acknowledges that our history is a positive one, the threadbare connection with slavery means we must change our name.

Of course, since slavery was common in most civilizations prior to about 1800, you can usually make a connection between just about anybody and slavery if you look hard enough.

For example, New York is named after York in England. During Saxon times

for several centuries prior to the year 1000 there was a slave market in York, so the name of York is indelibly associated with slavery. Should New York change its name?

Slavery is not simply a single dark chapter in human history, it is the way almost every civilization was organized until relatively recent times. Both Classical Greece and the Roman Empire were based on slavery. While no decent person would countenance slavery today, let

us not forget that we have only rejected it in historically recent times.

Henry Goulburn takes nothing away from our pride, and we should not change the names of places or remove the statues of those who built our country. They were people of their time, as we are people of our time. We must be aware of how history impacts the present and do what we must to ensure that we continue to make Canada a better place for all.

The Township of Russell recently went through a similar issue. However, using common sense, the town Council announced that it would keep its name but find a new namesake.

If Councillor Moffatt truly believes Goulbourn’s name should change, a public consultation would be a better place to start.

Unilaterally announcing a decision and then offering its residents the opportunity to be consulted is a discourteous slap in the face to those to whom he is ac-

countable. In the Ottawa Citizen article, Nov 20, regarding this issue, Moffatt states “he doesn’t want to have a conversation because it is dangerous”.

Does this mean he knows what is best for us because we are not capable? Residents in Goulbourn should have the opportunity to participate in the entire conversation, not just the part the Councillor would prefer.

City needs to change the way it funds infrastructure This week at Audit Committee was bittersweet. After seven dedicated years to the City’s taxpayer as Auditor-General, Ken Hughes participated in his last Committee meeting before his retirement. I want to thank the Auditor-General for his service to Ottawa and for the outstanding work he and his team do.

Two major audits came to committee last week.

The first was the A c c o u n t i n g / Wa t e r f a l l Agreement between Lansdowne and the City of Ottawa. The term

waterfall is in reference to a complicated payment structure between OSEG and the taxpayer.

The Audit report was thorough and a contentious one. However, in this article, I would like to discuss the Facilities Management Audit, which I believe has a more direct impact on Ottawa and its’ residents across the City.

The findings of the 95page report were damning. I stated during the meeting that the report read more like a horror story. We found out that deferred maintenance on the 866 city facilities and assets covered under this audit is valued at almost half a billion dollars and is likely underestimated.

We heard that the City is investing only 25 percent of what the industry standard says is required to maintain our public assets properly. The Auditor-General could not assess almost 40% of the 866 City facilities condition due to a lack of

information being kept or reported on by staff.

This audit report was also the first report senior management did not provide comments during Auditor-General Hughes’s tenure. This is shocking as staff are kept informed through every step and are given the explicit opportunity to provide comments months in advance. I understood that the bureaucracy did not like the “narrative” of the story that was being told with the audit, which is likely why they were dragging their feet. This was not the first time, and it probably won’t be the

last time that a report is published that was critical of staff operations. The difference between this audit and others that have been brought forward is that these findings affect every ward across the City and the residents who live here.

We already know the City is almost a decade behind in maintaining our public assets and these needed repairs are underfunded each year by millions of dollars. It is also why Council approved a 3 percent property tax increase each year during this term of Council, which allocated

the additional 1 percent to infrastructure spending to close this gap.

This audit made clear to me that we need to be changing the way Ottawa funds infrastructure. We must do much more to improve how we monitor and maintain these assets and cannot afford to continue doing business as usual. We around the council table must challenge public servants to do a better job funding critical infrastructure repairs. This report goes to Council for a vote on December 9th. The same day that we will be voting on the 2021 budget.

to correctly guess who did it. Another author I enjoy is George Orwell. Because of him, I really enjoy reading the classic books that have a message in their stories. I quite enjoyed Animal Farm and 1984 by seeing the predictions that he had.”

What is your greatest accomplishment?

“I was fortunate enough to go on the French Exchange. My biggest accomplishment is that I went to a different country for three months and lived there. I stayed with a family and spoke French (English is my first language), attended a French school, and lived like a Frenchman!”

School Activities: “With the pandemic, school activities have kind of stopped. But, I am on the Student Council (I’m the Secretary), so I’m keeping

busy with that. We have a meeting at least once a week, but more often, two or three a week. We are always planning something new to help make this year fun and exciting for our fellow students.

We recently had our Can Food Drive, when St Mark raised over $35,000! We are very pleased to see that our classmates rose to the occasion, and raised a lot of money in this time of need.”

Other Activities/Interests: “Another hobby I have is playing guitar. I found that it’s a great way to relax after school. I get together with my friends (socially distanced, of course) every few weekends, and we all play together.”

City releases draft of Official Plan for comment

The draft Official Plan has been posted for comment and you have until February 17, 2021 to provide your feedback. The City has made it easy for residents to comment by providing an overview background document and dissecting the Plan into topic areas so that you have the option of commenting on selected topics or on the entire plan.

Before reviewing the documents, it is recommended that you read the What’s New one-pager which explains some of the new terminology being used, such as Transects, area designations and overlays. For example, instead of two policy areas (urban and rural) outlined in the current Official Plan, the new Official Plan will have six policy Transects which represent different areas of the City: Downtown Core, Inner Urban, Outer Urban, Greenbelt, Suburban, and Rural.

Within the Official Plan, there are 22 topic areas.

These include topics ranging from Rural Economic Development and Climate Change, to Sidewalks and Driveways, Parks and Water. Each topic has a one pager for review and then a feedback form for comments. The form is quite short with only six ques-

tions and an opportunity to provide detailed comments.

Of particular interest to Manotick and area residents are the documents on the Rural Economic Development Strategy, Rural Transect, Natural Heritage and Sidewalks and Driveways. The Rural Economic Strategy focuses on the agri-business sector and the establishment of warehouse facilities adjacent to highways. The Rural Transect document includes a commitment to protecting farmland and the unique character of rural villages with a buffer zone around villages. This policy paper also notes that the Official Plan includes policies to ensure development will be sensitive to the context and characteristics of the rural area.

The Natural Heritage document talks about the need to protect core natural areas and linkages, such as wetlands and significant woodlands, while still allowing rural development.

Another section of interest relates to Healthy and Inclusive Communities which

highlights the need for development of 15-minute neighbourhoods.

The Sidewalks and Driveways one-pager looks at how to limit cut-outs for driveways in business areas. This is an issue for Manotick as we have many driveways coming off Main Street which, in turn, reduce the number of parking spots available. That is the reason the Secondary Plan recommends future development or replacement of existing buildings are placed on the Street with parking access to the side or from the rear.

Transportation priorities are outlined in the Mobility one-pager, which notes the importance of active transportation options, transit and equity as well as the need to be able to repurpose streets for non-vehicular uses. It also would enable the development of public parking garages in residential neighbourhoods to address the increasing volume of parking needs in established neighbourhoods.

Ward Bound Report recommends fewer rural wards

The final recommendations for the new ward structure have been released in a report by the consultants following a round of public consultations earlier this fall. The Report recommends 24 wards including 12 urban, 9 suburban and three rural wards. Currently there are 23 wards, made up of 12 urban, 7 suburban and 4 rural wards.

The Report is based on public and Councillor input gathered throughout 2020. The public consultations included the completion of 2150 resident surveys, 238 submissions and comments, and a series of consultations meetings attended by 137 individuals and stakeholders.

The MVCA, among

other organizations, lobbied to maintain the four rural wards. This is the second review that has resulted in a reduction of rural wards by one. The original ward structure at the time of amalgamation of rural townships with the City included 5 rural wards.

The new proposed structure would see the creation of a larger rural ward in the south east to encompass Osgoode Ward and part of the current Cumberland Ward.

The intention was to make rural wards only rural with no suburban areas included in those ward boundaries.

Holiday time is when Take Another Bite is at its best

Bianca Coldrey worked for the Farm Boy Chain for nine years developing their prepared meal and private label products among other things.

The job was rewarding, demanding and time consuming and she decided to retire from corporate culture to open a small take out eatery in Manotick in order have more time for family and friends. Little did she know that her innovative menu planning and cooking skills would result in a jewel destination point for the village and a runaway business success.

I like to write about the hard working and dedicated businesspeople we have in the village. We are lucky to have them as they are the heartbeat of our community. It’s wonderful to see dreams become reality. Take Another Bite opened at Bridge St. in June of 2014 and now has a commercial kitchen at a second location to serve Nepean and Ottawa on Colonnade Road, employing a total of 22 people between the two locations.

It’s Bianca’s baby, but husband Mike takes care of challenges behind the scenes and ensures things run seamlessly at both locations. COVID-19 has taken its toll in world economics, but Take Another Bite was able to keep serving meals throughout. They have streamlined their dinner possibilities by offering a variety of choices that can be customized to a client’s specific wishes including gluten and dairy free, vegetarian, or low carb and diabetic food.

Holiday time is when Bianca and her team really excel. The traditional Christmas menu for this year will be published at the end of this month. Clients can order from a variety of choices to be picked up and enjoyed at home. Gourmet dining without the fuss.

Holidays in the Capital – a reminder to think of others

By Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa The Holiday Season is an occasion to reflect on the year past, take a sincere appreciation for our blessings, and find opportunities to help those less fortunate than us.

But it can also be a hard time for those living in poverty, in temporary housing and shelters, or even on our streets, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Many families are struggling to make ends meet and to put food on the table, particularly during the holidays. In Ottawa alone, more than

39,000 people visit an emergency food bank program every month – and that number is rising rapidly in 2020.

The 36th annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive is the Ottawa Food Bank’s largest single-day food drive every year – and it helps thousands of individuals and families ensure they have enough to eat when demand is at its highest.

On Saturday, December 19 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., over 600 OC Transpo and City of Ottawa volunteers will be collecting non-perishable food items and donations for the Ottawa Food Bank

Together, let’s try to make this the most successful and impactful campaign to date. Every donation, whether big or small, goes a long way in helping the most vulnerable in our community.

I’d also like to remind residents to think of our local small businesses,

This year, I urge you all to consider supporting these local shops, services and restaurants by purchasing items or gift cards for your loved ones. Your help through the holidays will be greatly appreci-

Finally, while this time of year is typically spent with family and friends, we must remain COVIDwise and do things a little bit differently this year, as we continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Winter Weather Parking Ban now in effect What is a Winter Weather Parking Ban? Last year, the City moved to a new parking ban system that was timed to match winter weather patterns rather than set times. Between November 15 and April 1, The Director of Roads and Parking Services may declare a winter weather parking ban for inclement weather including freezing rain or when Environment Canada forecasts 7 cm or more of snow in the Ottawa area. This includes any forecast for a

range of snow more than 7 cm, including 5 to 10 cm.

During a winter weather parking ban, vehicles without a residential parking permit that are parked on the street during a parking ban may be ticketed and towed.

When a winter weather parking ban is called, the City issues a special advisory to the local media and posts it on social media, sends an email to registered residents and updates the City’s App. The parking ban ends when

snow clearing is completed and the City issues an advisory indicating the ban has been lifted.

Residents are responsible for moving their vehicle during a winter weather parking ban. Residents can sign up to receive an email notice about the parking ban at Ottawa.ca.

Residents can also follow the City’s Twitter, Facebook and Ottawa.ca webpage for updates. Local media will also have information about the winter weather parking ban.

High school entrepreneur finds success during pandemic Like any small business owner, Wade Bradford finds himself juggling his time.

What makes the Richmond business owner unique, however, is that he is still a high school student.

What started out as a 14-year-old cutting five lawns in his neighbourhood in 2017 has grown into a bustling snow removal, lawn maintenance and landscaping company.

“I didn’t even have a licence so my parents had drive me everywhere,” Bradford said.

“That’s how they became involved.

In 2018, Lawn and Order was born. The shield the logo and the name is a tribute to Bradford’s father, who is a police officer. Bradford said he would not have been able to get the company off the ground without his help. Bradford doubled the num-

ber of lawns he looked after, and added spring and fall clean-ups.

He also added snow removal, using a four-wheeler and snowblowers.

The following year, Bradford, at 16, registered Lawn and Order as a company and obtained insurance. He also continued to expand his growing business.

“In 2019, I maintained a healthy number of lawns while buying more specialized gear to help me grow into a variety of softscape services,” he said.

“In the winter, I grew my snow customers, clearing them with a 30hp tractor and a snowblower.”

Bradford said he was “just like the bigger guys, just smaller.”

While 2020 was a challenging year for many, it was an exciting year for Bradford.

“I finally got my G2 license,

which allowed me to take on more work,” he said. He also traded in his small tractor for two 60hp Massey Ferguson tractors.

Lawn and Order offers a full array of services year round.

“We offer spring clean-ups, lawn care (mowing, aerating, dethatching topdressing seeding) aggregate and soil delivery, dumpster rental, some tree removal, hedge trimming, tractor work and Fall Cleanups. I have the only debris loader setup in the village to collect leaves. In the winter I offer Snow clearing for residential drives and small commercial lots.”

Bradford is one of only two commercially insured snow removal contractors who can apply salt.

two visits to each household during a snowfall. He says the support of his family has been crucial for his success.

“My mom keeps close tabs on the financial books and my dad helps out with showing me how to plan, organize operations and equipment maintenance,” he said. “My whole family has supported me. You may even see

my grandparents the odd time helping. It gives them joy to be able to help and support me.”

Bradford said his biggest challenge is time management.

“I am still in high school so I have to balance time between work, school and being a teenager,” he said. “I have also had to become more outgoing.”

Bradford’s long term plans

are “to continue to grow and become a turfgrass specialist company offering a variety of specialized services.”

With the success he has had as a young entrepreneur, and with the support of his family, there is little reason to doubt that this unique business from Richmond will continue to grow and flourish for years to come.
