FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Prep Community, We are grateful that the weather continues to bless us with a beautiful, snow covered landscape. We are already closing in on the end of our first semester and it seems as though we’ve just started the school year! The mood in the school for students, faculty and staff is running high. And for this we give thanks. Students are optimistic with their classes and studies. Faculty feel our fall and winter athletics and academic programs have been successful. We are enjoying a brisk holiday season filled with concerts and events. Each song and dance is received with enthusiasm and support. The Benedictine value of community is felt by everyone in attendance. One of our key successes this fall is the technological addition of Schoology. This is a userfriendly educational software for teachers, students and parents to track academic progress and share information online. Parents are able to use Schoology to follow faculty suggestions and advice for their students. It is also a convenient way to keep the lines of communication open on a daily basis. Students appreciate it because they are able to track their assignments and check their grades in one convenient location. This semester we successfully achieved a matching grant challenge offered by an anonymous donor for $10,000 to improve some of our most-used student spaces. Alumni/ae and parents alike worked to meet the match and donate funds to help update our library and “Fish Bowl” student commons. These renovations will begin during Christmas break and will continue in the summer months. Changes include updates to carpeting, electrical wiring and overall ambiance of these busy student spaces. Our academic program continues to grow so that we are able to offer our students the best possible college preparation as they look to their futures. Our staff and faculty are partners in helping our young people develop in their values, our faith, and personal development. It is a privilege to be headmaster at such a wonderful spiritual and academic environment. We continue to express thanks to all of our volunteers and supporters who donate their time and abilities to our campus. Your continued generosity allows us to build a sustainable future for Prep. FROM PRINCIPAL MATT REICHERT 2013 – 2014 A C A D E M I C & C O M M U N I T Y L I F E H I G H L I G H T S In the world of education, one of the major concerns that face schools is assessment. At the core of the concern is the legitimate question, “How do we know how well we are doing?” To find an accurate answer, schools issue surveys, students sit for exams, teachers are evaluated, and a picture begins to emerge.
As a Catholic school in the Benedictine tradition … We take our faith, our traditions, and our culture very seriously. The custodianship of a 158-year old school is significant; add in a 1,500-year old Benedictine tradition and 2,000 years of faith and teaching in the Church and it becomes monumental. Our students incorporate the Benedictine values into their daily lives through our Community Formation Program. From speakers to programs, advising groups to disciplinary action, all of our formation is undertaken through the lens of the Rule. This year our halls played host to members from the monastic community who shared with us their experiences of our Benedictine values of focus: stability, community, peace, and stewardship. These monastic guests further amplified the religious presence in our school. Of particular note, this past year saw the highest number of religious men and women employed at Prep in many years with five Benedictines from Saint John’s Abbey and one School Sister of Notre Dame from the Mankato Province.
… we prepare students for success in higher education … Our college-preparatory curriculum, grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition and founded on the liberal arts, is working. Our ACT scores are consistently higher than the state and national averages, distinguishing our graduates from those in other schools. The Class of 2014 scored an average of 26.7, compared to the Minnesota average of 22.8 and the national average of 21.1. Our graduates earned 353 college credits from Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict while enrolled at Prep. Of these, 254 were earned in our building through Prep courses that carry college credit, and 99 were earned at the College and University.

Further, 27% of students in our graduating class pursued the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma, the largest percentage of any graduating class since the program was instituted in 2011. Colleges and universities are taking notice, too. Our graduates are routinely admitted to some of the most competitive college programs in the country. In fact, in the last five years, Prep has sent graduates to 32 of the top 50 college programs as identified in U.S. News and World Report. The Class of 2014 also received more than $3,000,000 in scholarships and grants from colleges and universities. Beyond these important realities, we earned many bragging rights. Prep won the Minnesota State Knowledge Bowl competition for the second time in three years. Prep placed first in our region, which consists of nine States, in the National Physics Bowl competition. Prep students scored in the top levels in the National Spanish Exam with four students ranked at or above the 95th percentile and seven more between the 85th and 94th percentile. Not to be outdone, twelve Prep students scored at or above the 90th percentile in the National German Exam. Six students competed in the Drake University Physics Contest and finished in the top 20 of all contestants from around the nation. We will find success and move forward toward our goals because of the passionate dedication of our faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students. Moreover, we will continue our important mission and work because of your generosity, your support, and your prayers.

As of June 30, 2014, the endowment balance is $9,198,196 and funded $331,400 in scholarships and financial assistance for current students.
