GREEN-LIGHT #13

Taupo report - Round four of the 2013 BNT V8 SuperTourers, 31 August - 1 September The Taupo Fathers Day 250 was the best round of the year, thus far. Although many of you will have seen on TV3 News and CRC Motorsport the coverage of our car turned around and clouted in the final race, causing a DNF that didn’t dampen our spirits. JMR enjoyed excellent support from sponsors and supporters over the weekend and it was great to speak to so many first time race goers, as well as those ardent fans. Although JMR is based at the circuit we have only had one test day there all year, in February in very hot conditions. It has been a very trying season from a results point of view, but we have always had good top-5 pace. I expected us to be strong at Taupo on race-pace but not certain about our qualifying potential. On Saturday we managed to extract more speed out of the car over the two practice sessions, it started with a lot of oversteer and was hard to drive. We entered qualifying (two sessions of 15 mins each) with our two sets of new ‘green’ slick tyres ready to go. In the first session we were quickly up the front of the times but I knew we needed to find more. My next flying lap was much quicker than my first lap (1.29.0) but another car went off the circuit and caused a red flag. So back to the pits and out again after the car was cleared. We didn’t move forward after that and slipped to sixth (Qualifying for Race 1). The next session was almost a carbon copy. But this time we were much closer to the pole position time (1.28.1 – JMR 1.28.55). The problem was that there were four cars including us on the same 100th of a second, (1.28.5). So we finished fifth but very close to second. We were all very lucky to have dry weather all weekend and although it was cold the crowd that came out on Sunday was impressive. At all the other rounds we haven’t put together a whole day of racing, mainly through being taken out by others (Rounds 1 and 2). So the focus was to put together three strong races and collect as many points as possible. Race one was a strong effort. At the first corner we cut the right rear tyre, so it never came up to pressure during the race. But I managed to pass Murphy into fifth and then chased down fourth place for the whole race. The driver (Ash Walsh) made a mistake with two laps to go and I grabbed fourth from him.

BP Ultimate. It’s a healthy habit for every engine.

Taupo report cont... So race one done, sixth to fourth, happy JMR Team. The next race we started on the inside in fifth, which is a safer start position than the outside. With many years of racing under my belt at Taupo I knew to be cautious at the very tight turn 1. McLaughlin lead away and Simon Evans was in front of me. He is younger and decided to brake late at turn 1, problem was he hit McLaughlin into a spin. That was great for us though as we came out of the corner in second chasing the leader Pedersen. For the next 18 laps I tried to close in on Pedersen but he was too quick in the middle stages. Still we were SOO happy to have our second podium of the year. Race 2 done, fifth to second. And for the final 32-lap feature race we were second on overall points, starting next to Shane van Gisbergen who would start from pole. This was our first front row start of the season and it was great to have a cast of nearly 100 supporters and sponsors join us up there. At the start there was mayhem, van Gis was shunted from behind and spun across the field. I watched this all happen and took the lead! We then had a safety car for four laps and I started to notice a problem with our ‘shift-cut’ in the gearbox. This is an electronic module that allows the driver to keep their foot on the throttle while changing gear. It was playing up and causing the car to misfire. We took the restart in the lead but the misfire was costing time. Second placed Pedersen passed me illegally down the end of the main straight, using the grass rather than the track! I tucked in behind with Murphy very close going into turn one. At the mid corner I felt a thump and then the car spun on me. Murphy had made a mistake. I stopped the car because cars were going in front and behind me. Unfortunately someone drove around the corner and didn’t see the bright Black/Green Blackwoods Protector Falcon!!! Bang! Our great run was finished. I toured back to the pits and we retired from the race. As I said initially we were all disappointed but very encouraged to be racing up the front all day. We also moved up in the points from eighth to seventh. Our next mission is the three race ENDURANCE SERIES. This series is a championship on its own, so we are focusing on the best result in the eight races we will have. We also want to improve our overall championship position and think that with some “lady luck” it is possible to finish in the top-5 overall.

We are once again pleased to have Jono Lester joining us for the three enduros. Jono has once again been driving in Asia in the Mercedes Benz SLS GT3 FIA Car. His team currently leads the series and Jono is race fit and as always, personally fit! Jono and I had a great start to last year’s enduros with two third places at Taupo, from there though we really struggled. This year we are in for a tougher campaign with more Australian V8Supercar drivers coming over to compete in the enduros, but we are much better prepared. Our car pace at Hampton Downs and Pukekohe is very strong. As the final race lengths and rules are confirmed we will send these on. I am personally about to embark on the longest continual run of races in my career! I have seven endurance races in seven weeks, starting with the Sandown 500 this weekend. From now until Dec 1st I will drive in nine endurance races in three different cars. See you at Hampton Downs!
