GREEN-LIGHT #17
28 March 2014 - Issue No,17
Wrap on last weekend’s Pukekohe round of the V8 SuperTourers. JMR has been going through plenty of changes this year. Firstly we have young Mark Gibson as the main driver of #47 as we look to develop Mark into a future champion. In the first two rounds we ran the car without an engineer as we looked to find a suitable replacement for last years. Between rounds two and three we managed to sign Mark Johnstone as our engineer. Mark has previously engineered Ant Pedersen to many race wins and the endurance title last year. He has immediately made a significant difference to the team and car performance and I am confident that we are now on the right track and will be fighting for Podiums by the end of the season. The V8SuperTourer race car has 95% identical parts between all of the cars. The series regulates the settings permitted for suspension geometry with minimums and maximums. It’s the combination of all of the settings that determines whether or not you will have a car capable of winning or competing at the front. Last weekend we witnessed a long time competitor of mine Angus Fogg win his first race in V8ST. Angus and his team have made a great comeback from a big crash in round one; they put all of the combinations together and drove the car very well. Well done. It just proves that the V8ST race car can provide the opportunity for teams big and small to win.

Pukekohe continued... Back to JMR. Our weekend went to plan except for an unfortunate DNF in race two. It was judged to be a racing incident but it was a close call. The team did a great job to get the car running for the next race and it was pleasing to see Mark finish a strong ninth in very tricky conditions. Marks ninth place in qualifying 1 was our best of the season and again we were just 0.2 sec off moving up to sixth. Mark really has a focus on his qualifying now and knowing that our car set-up is optimised will help his confidence grow each time he qualifies. We are going back to Pukekohe for NZs biggest annual sporting event, the ITM500. Last year Mark and I raced in the older NZV8s and we both finished on the podium. V8SuperTourers have worked hard to secure a long term deal to be the premier support category for the ITM500. Our location in the pits will be right by the track crossing, maximising our exposure to the huge crowd expected. There will be live coverage of V8ST races with details to be confirmed shortly. We have practice on Thursday, qualifying Friday and two 16 lap races on Saturday and on the Sunday. V8SuperTourers are about to announce a new calendar that will allow us to plan forward for the next few years. Their support categories are growing and the events team has had a chance to fine tune the promoting and entertainment mix to attract current and new fans. All sports are experiencing smaller crowds than we have had historically. V8ST has been brave enough to trial new formats and dates to learn the market. The new calendar will appeal to more teams, support categories, sponsor and fans than ever before. More to come on this in the next few weeks. The JMR team are hard at work prepping the car for Pukekohe and making small improvements along the way. Mark Gibson now has a round under his belt with his new set-up and I think we will see the benefit of this at the big Pukekohe event. Thanks as always for your support, looking forward to seeing you at Puke or putting on a show for you on TV.

Mark Gibson: Round 3 Pukekohe Heading into round three, I was feeling positive that it would be a good weekend for myself and the JMR team. Pukekohe would be the first race track this year that I had raced the V8 SuperTourer at previously and coupled by adding new engineer in Mark Johnstone to the team, things were looking good. Practice 1 showed that this was the case, as the car was very good out of the box and we ended the session sixth and the second session ninth. With the field being larger this weekend I was happy with where I was early on. Qualifying 1 was tough as the field was extremely close; I ended up ninth and was 0.2 of a second of fifth place. The second qualifying session was so frustrating for me, I was only 0.05 slower than in the first session and this put me in 12th, and once again only 0.3 of a second would of had me in the top six. Race one was disappointing for me, I had a good battle with Richard Moore and in the end I ended up 11th. Race two I got a good start and was inside the top ten before making a pass for ninth. I had the pass done and was looking forward out of the corner, then the next thing I knew I was in the wall. The guy I had passed did not concede, and when he ran out of road he turned into my left rear, spinning me and causing a fair amount of damage. This unfortunately meant my first DNF of the season.

Mark Gibson: Round 3 continued... The JMR crew put in a massive effort to get the car out and in great condition for the final race, so a huge thanks to them. The final race we started last on the grid and finally I got what I had hoped for, a bit of rain. The race went well; I moved my way up from last to sixth and stayed there for the majority of the race. My tyres were well passed there used by near the end of the 34 lap race, and it felt like I was driving on marshmallows as the wet tyre does not like drying conditions. I ended up dropping back a position and on the last lap got past by the lead driver on slick tyres. I ended the final in eighth. The bad round led to me dropping to 8th the points. But we are still in reach of the top six so I will be pushing hard at the next round to head that way! See you at the ITM 500. Mark
