W

hen I first saw The Freedom Quilt, I assumed it was made to celebrate the American Centennial of 1876. Its patriotic theme was consistent with numerous other Centennial quilts I had seen. However, judging by the fabrics, I could tell that this quilt was made later, circa 1880, despite the fact that the blue fabric was of an earlier period. Closer examination indicated that this was not a typical quilt made to mark the country’s one-hundredth birthday. As I studied the quilt, researched the time period it was made, and “listened” to what it was saying, its message became increasingly clear. 14

WorldMags

Fons R Porter’s Love of Quilting

The Freedom Quilt was making a bold statement about the quiltmaker’s vivid plea of hope for a better future and freedom for all in a country that had been deeply divided. The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in American history, and our country was still in a state of turmoil, having been devastated by so much death and destruction. Although slavery had legally ended, black Americans still were far from equal citizens. Close attention to the thoughtful planning and subtle details in this quilt conveys the quiltmaker’s deep convictions, opinions, and attitudes. The way she arranged the stars against a center field of blue is March/April 2011

not arbitrary, but appears to be a regimental flag like one carried into battle. With the corner stars pointing to the center, one’s eye is drawn to the encircled center star, which is slightly larger than the others. Placed to capture the viewer’s attention are three inscriptions embroidered in red on the white stripe directly under the center field of stars. They read: “Hope of our Country,” “The Star of Freedom,” and “M.W.L. To C.M.L.” Each has specific and symbolic meaning as to the purpose and the meaning of this quilt. The center inscription, “The Star of Freedom,” provided me with a clue that made everything fall into www.FonsandPorter.com

Detail of embroidery. “Hope of our Country” is perhaps a dream or a silent plea on the part of the maker for a better future. “The star of Freedom” is centered in the line of script and key to the maker’s purpose. Note that in the laboriously worked elaborate Victorian capital letters “star” is not capitalized, and the “T” is not crossed. Perhaps someone was working very hard to make them look right. The initials “M.W.L To C.M.L” may convey a wish that the next generation succeed in the pursuit of the American dream of freedom, equality, and justice for all.

place. I had a vague recollection of those words, but could not bring to mind their specific significance. It did not take long to find that they referred to the North Star, the brightest star at the top right of the Big Dipper constellation. There are many other references to the Star of Freedom and the North Star in anti-slavery and abolitionist literature. A line in “The Ballad of Harriet Tubman” says, “I followed my northern star of freedom.” In 1847, Frederick Douglass started a newspaper in Rochester, New York, called The North Star. In his West Indies Emancipation Speech, he declared, “The morning star of freedom is seen from every quarter of the globe.” In a eulogy to James Cunningham Jordan, who was considered the chief conductor of the Underground Railroad, his pastor said, “In the troubled days of slavery this great heart reached out and helped the oppressed seeking the North Star of Freedom.” The first inscription, “Hope of our Country,” reads like a caption describing the inspiration for the quilt since it reminds the viewer that the abolition of slavery was only the first step toward freedom. Former slave Frederick Douglass accurately described the plight of his people after the Civil War as follows: “The fourteenth and fifteenth amendments are virtually nullified. The old master class is today triumphant and the newly enfranchised class in a condition but little above that in which they were found before the rebellion.” The sentiments expressed in the quilt lead me to believe March/April 2011

that the maker was lamenting the conditions of the Reconstruction Period and how little had been accomplished by the Civil War. The third inscription reads “M.W.L. To C.M.L.” Family history revealed that the last name was Lewis, and genealogy records in Boston provided the rest of the information. The quilt was made by Mary W. Lewis for Clara M. Lewis. This gift was perhaps a silent wish from a mother to her daughter that the next generation be more successful in the pursuit of the cause for freedom and justice for all. On the lower right hand corner of the quilt is one final statement by the maker—the absence of perfection in the unfinished border. She left off one eagle. There is no evidence that there was ever an eagle there, and there is little chance that this is accidental or unintentional. Where else, but in the lower right hand corner would something be more noticeably missing? Like a horse without a rider, symbolizing a fallen leader, the missing eagle is a silent gesture on the part of the quiltmaker symbolizing an uncompleted mission and a dream yet to be fulfilled. I believe that women fully understood that quilts could teach and meaningfully influence generations, and this is one of the most important examples of the power of quilts. Quilts comfort, protect, and can convey not only love, but also social concerns and beliefs. Quilts serve to connect generations not just physically, but emotionally and intellectually as well. They often mark major events in loved one’s www.FonsandPorter.com

WorldMags lives, they provide warmth for the body and sustenance to the soul, and they provided opportunities for women to express ideas and opinions at a time when only a few were afforded the privilege. Researching this quilt has been an extraordinary experience for me. I would like to thank my friend Stephen Score for bringing this quilt to my attention and for allowing me to share it in this article. I would also like to thank my friend Dr. Robert C. Toll, African-American historian and scholar, for his generous contributions.

Shweshwe Washing Instructions 1. Serge or zigzag fabric edges before washing.

TRIEDRTRUE TESTED FOR YOU

This block also looks great in bright colors. We used black-and-white and lime green fabrics from Maywood Studios. The collection is called 13 Going on Thirty.

2. Wash in cold water using non-phosphate

degergent such as Orvus, Ivory, or Dreft. 3. High water level ensures water will adequately circulate through the fabric. 4. Rinse in cold water. Run fabric through additional rinse cycles until water runs clear. 5. Dry flat or tumble dry. Shweshwe shrinks when machine dried, so be sure to tumble dry for any projects that will be washed later. 6. Press using cotton setting on iron.

About Shweshwe Fabric Shweshwe is manufactured in South Africa by Da Gama Textiles—the only know producer of traditional indigo-dyed discharge printed fabric in the world. The intricate indigo, white, chocolate brown, and red prints remain in steady demand for traditional African clothing and tourism products, and now for quiltmaking in America. It is believed by some that the name Shweshwe comes from the swishing sound the fabric makes when the wearer walks. However, according to Da Gama Textiles’ history, the cloth was gifted to, and named for, King Moshoeshoe. By association with the king, the cloth was called shoeshoe, and eventually shweshwe. Shweshwe fabric is 36" wide, and is dyed using natural indigo from many different plants. Indigo itself is not a true dye, but when used, produces a chemical reaction between the fabric and the agent. When fabric is pulled out of the dye pot, the agent oxidizes with air to produce the beautiful blue color. To read more about Shweshwe, go to marulaimports.danemcoweb.com and indigo.cottoninthecabin.com

quilting T H E Q U I LT

BY Dawn Cavanaugh. National Director of Education, American Professional Quilting Systems

Great Beginnings and Endings After working many hours piecing, quilting, and binding your quilt, the last thing you want to worry about is the quilting unraveling. Knots of thread on the back of your quilt or unsightly thread blobs on the front are also unattractive— especially to quilt judges! The techniques here will help ensure your quilting stitches last for years to come and stand up to close inspection.

W

hen choosing the method for your quilting thread starts and stops, secure beginnings and endings are critical for quilts that will receive lots of wear and tear. However, this does not mean that your quilt back must be riddled with lumps and bumps. Edge-to-edge or pantograph quilting covers the surface of your quilt completely with a pattern. Whether you use a longarm or a domestic machine, it’s very likely that you will need more than one bobbin to cover your entire quilt. Careful planning will help decrease the possibility of running out of bobbin thread in a conspicuous area of your quilt. Check your bobbin thread after each row. If your design is complex, find a spot in the middle of your row 46

WorldMags

Fons R Porter’s Love of Quilting

where you can tie off your thread and check the bobbin during your first pass. If the bobbin is more than half empty at that midpoint, you will run short of bobbin thread before you finish. If it is necessary to stop and start in the middle of your quilt, select a section in the pattern that will allow you to make a strategically planned stop—places where direction changes occur in the pattern are better than in the middle of a long stitching line. Stagger your starts and stops to make them even more inconspicuous. Custom quilting requires many thread changes and starts and stops. Using small stitches at the beginning and end of a stitching line is one method for securing thread. These stitches should be extremely close together—almost as if you are March/April 2011

stitching over only one fiber of the fabric at a time. Place 10–15 stitches within a quarter inch for extra security. If your machine has a stitch regulator, activate the regulator and quilt your design, stopping ¼" short of your intended stopping point. Place another set of tiny stitches in that last section, ending right where you planned. Pull your bobbin thread to the surface and snip the thread. This method is acceptable to quilt judges, provided you are neat where your line begins and ends. Securing thread by stitching in the same place with a few stitches causes thread knots or excessive thread build-up on the back of the quilt. While this is certainly very secure, you may not enjoy the scratchy feel of knots rubbing on your skin. www.FonsandPorter.com

WorldMags

If you choose to cut the knots off the back to avoid this, you will risk having the thread unravel. Backstitching is a start-and-stop method that can range from “barely noticeable” to “glaring.” Bring up your bobbin thread a short distance ahead of where you really wish to begin quilting.Take a few small stitches backward to your true starting point.

Continue forward again, stitching directly on top of your reverse stitches for minimal visibility. If you are trying to please a quilt show judge, clean starts and stops are essential. Many quilters bury their thread tails, using a traditional quilter’s knot. This is the most invisible way to begin and end your stitching (unless your thread color may shadow

through the quilt’s surface), however, it is also the most labor intensive. It’s also a good choice for metallic or invisible threads, as these may not lock properly with other methods. Follow the step-by-step instructions here to learn this technique and give your quilts a professional finished look.

Burying Thread Tails 1. Choosing the proper needle can speed up the process of burying thread tails. Some self-threading needles have a slot in the top, just above the needle’s eye. The thread rests in the slot, and with a little tug the thread slips down into the eye. Others, such as spiral eye needles, have a slot or opening on the side of the needle, next to the eye. You can also use a tapestry needle, or any needle with a large, long eye.

1 2

3

4

2. If you choose a standard needle, this strategy will help you get both thread tails through the eye of the needle. Fold the two thread tails over the needle. Pull up firmly with the needle to align the folds with each other.

3. Hold the thread tautly with the needle, and slide your thumb and finger up to pinch the fold tightly between them. Slide the needle out, keeping the folded thread pinched firmly between your fingers. 4. Hold the needle so that the eye is horizontal and positioned above the thread folded between your fingers. Continue squeezing your fingers and “saw” the needle eye back and forth as you slowly slide it over the thread trapped between your fingers. (You may need to relax just a bit so that you can at least see a bit of the thread peeking out between your fingers.)

WorldMags

March/April 2011

Fons R Porter’s Love of Quilting

47

WorldMags 5

6

7

5. Check to see if the sawing motion is working by slightly relaxing your thumb and finger to peek inside. If you’ve missed, pinch the thread again (you may need to refold it and start over) and try again. You have succeeded when you’ve coaxed a small loop of each thread into the eye of the needle. Pull the two thread loops up to slide the needle onto the thread tails. 6. Hold the threaded needle as if it is exiting the fabric. 7. Wrap the thread coming from the quilt around the needle tip three or four times (the more wraps, the bigger the knot).

8

9

10

8. Slide the hand holding the needle up until you can grasp the wrapped thread around the needle. Hold this wrapped thread while you form the knot on the thread. 9. With your free hand, grab the tip of the needle and pull it through, holding the wraps with your other hand. 10. The needle will slide through the wrapped thread, and as you pull the thread tails, the wraps will slide together to form a knot close to the fabric.

11

12

13

11. To bury the knot, insert the needle tip into the top fabric where your thread exits the quilt. Try to penetrate the batting layer but be careful not to push the needle out through the backing fabric. Bring the needle tip out of the fabric at a distance slightly longer than that between your knot and the fabric. 12. When the knot meets the quilt’s surface, gently tug on the thread tails to pull the knot into the quilt layers. You can scratch your fingernail across the knot, keeping some pressure on the thread, to help coax the knot through the quilt top. 13. Snip the thread tails close to the quilt surface.

TRIEDRTRUE TESTED FOR YOU

For an updated version Alternate Setting Diagram

of this traditional design, we used fabrics from the Cotillion Fancy collection by Ro Gregg for Northcott.

From the Curator Multicolored calico blocks, diagonally set with wide double-pink sashing, make a bold graphic statement on this quilt. The circa 1880–1910 top (72" × 82") was hand and machine pieced by an unknown maker, possibly from New York. Barbara Brackman identified the block pattern as both Broken Dishes and Chinese Puzzle. It was first published in the 1930s. “The quilt includes a surprising combination of neon prints featuring bright blue, green, and pink against a dark ground, as well as pale plaids and checked fabrics, all found at the turn of the century,” says Carolyn Ducey, Curator of Collections at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. “Quilters often mistake the neon fabric for modern prints because of the vibrant colors and eccentric designs.” The pattern is reminiscent of a puzzle, as the combination of squares, rectangles, and triangles—incorporating more than thirty pieces in each block—create the complex design. Challenging to piece, patterns like this one grew in popularity in the last decades of the nineteenth century. “This was partially due to the availability of printed patterns found in women’s magazines and farm periodicals,” says Ms. Ducey. “These publications increased in numbers in the late 1880s and 1890s, due to innovations in paper and printing technology that made them less expensive and quicker to produce.” About the Collection: Each issue, Love of Quilting features an antique quilt and pattern from the International Quilt Study Center & Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Center has the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world. See other gorgeous quilts from the collection and enjoy interactive Web features at www.quiltstudy.org under Quilt Explorer. K

Many of today’s newer quilters come to the craft with little to no knowledge of quilting basics; the home economics classes our mothers took were replaced by computer classes when we were in school. Therefore, Quilty will teach rudimentary quilting skills in addition to more advanced techniques, in hopes that after seeing just one episode, every viewer will be excited to make a quilt of her own.

ine fabric companies have introduced patriotic collections for Quilts of Valor. Andover Fabrics, Clothworks, Marcus Fabrics, Moda Fabrics, P&B Textiles, Quilting Treasures, Red Rooster Fabrics, Timeless Treasures, and Windham Fabrics are all offering groups of American Valor Fabrics to shop owners across the country. Quilts of Valor Web site information is printed on each selvage, and each company has made a financial contribution to Quilts of Valor. In place to help anyone participate in national service by making a Quilt of Valor is a new program called Under Our Wings. Quilt shops who have registered as official Under Our Wings shops are carrying American Valor Fabrics and offering Under our Wings workshops. In one- or two-day sessions, a capable quilter (the coach) simply takes one person (the rookie) under her wings and helps the rookie make a simple lap-size Quilt of Valor. The rookie simply buys a kit, and the coach brings her sewing machine and tools, and teaches the rookie how to sew a ¼" seam. The coach does the cutting, pinning, and pressing while the rookie sews simple patchwork blocks. Many patterns are available free online at the Quilts of Valor Web site. Look for the special Under Our Wings section at www.QOVF.org/wings. Shop owners will find a link to register their shops; quilters who want to be coaches and people who would like to be rookies will find links to help them get involved.
