A Message from the Coach Hello and welcome to James Madison University! As both an alumnus and a head coach for JMU Swimming and Diving, I am proud to show you everything our university has to offer. Samantha Smith Head Coach Sixth Season James Madison ‘01

• Named women’s head coach May 31, 2005. • Co-head coach of men and women for 2004-05 season . season • 23-19 in dual meets in four season as head women’s coach with gradual improvement every year in CAA meet standings standings . • 30 school records have fallen during her five seasons as head coach . • Two CAA event championships. • Back-to-back eight-win seasons in dual meets . • 14 school records broken in 2008-09 season, including all five relay races races . • 2008-09 squad posted 46 results that ranked in the top 10 marks in program history. • Largest win improvement in program history with 8-4 mark in 2007-08 after 1-7 finish the year prior • Nine school records broken in 2007-08 season, including eight in CAA meet • Produced third NCAA qualifier in program history in 07-08 (P.J. Becky Benson Diving Head Coach Third Season Alabama/N.C. State

• In 2008-09, qualified a pair of divers for the NCAA Zone Meet . • Freshman diver Nicole Jotso broke both six-dive school records with two record marks in the one-meter and the first 300-point dive in program history in the threemeter . • Both Nicole Jotso and Jessie Everett earned CAA Diver of the Week honors during the season . • After the 2008-09 season, Benson-coached divers account for four of the top seven three-meter scores in JMU history and ffour of the top nine one-meter marks . • In first season in 2007-08, coached Jamie Coyle to one-meter school record and NCAA Zone qualification. • Helped Coyle improve top one-meter score by nearly 80 points and three-meter by 60 points in one season . • Diving coach at N.C. State for 2006-07 season. • Six of seven divers at NCSU qualified for NCAA Zone B meet. • Dukes are 16-8 combined in two seasons at JMU in dual meets • JMU has steadily improved upon final place in CAA meet in each season with Pedersen on staff staff . • JMU shattered 14 school record with 46 top 10 times in 2008-09. • Arrival at JMU coincided with largest win turnaround in progr program history with 8-4 mark in 07-08 • In first season with Dukes, nine school records fell with one NCAA provisional qualifier • Graduate assistant coach at Missouri from 2004-07 with both men and women ranked in top 25 . • Competed for Missouri from 1999 to 2003. • Set school records in 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles freestyles . • Three-time Big XII All-Conference honoree .

Break the 200 Backstroke record, and improve on my 100 backstroke record. Why did you choose JMU? It was an environment where I could see myself succeeding .

What is your pre-meet ritual and/or music? I find a corner or my own space on the deck and listen to music . I don’t talk much at meets. What is your favorite event and why? 200 free because it’s a weird event where you have to find the right balance between endurance and sprinting .

Senior Sprint Freestyle Westerly, R.I./Westerly Communication Science and Disorders major • Part of two top-10 relay times in JMU history • As a senior, competed in the 50, 100, and 200 free as well as the 100 fly • Had a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly in the Marshall Meet in the 08-09 season. • As a sophomore, finished fourth in the 50 free at the Richmond Dual meet in the 07-08 seasons • Swam on fourth- and fifth-fastest 200 free relays of the season • Fifth in 400 free relay, fourth in 200 free relay at CAA Championships, as a freshman Why did you choose JMU? I chose JMU because of the spirit and atmosphere of the campus and for the Duke Dog experience . What is your favorite event and why? 200 free relay, I love the team event and the speed of the race!

• Qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships as a sophomore • Placed fifth in the one meter and fourth in the three meter at the 08-09 CAA Championships • Holds second-best one meter and third-best three meter scores (six dives) in program history • Won the three-meter dive against Loyola, Towson, Bucknell, and Northeastern along with four second-place finishes in the one meter • Named CAA Rookie of the Week once as a sophomore • Placed 14th at the 2007-08 CAA Champions in both one-meter and three-meter dives What are your favorite things about JMU? I love how when you walk around campus everyone you walk by smiles or says hi, everyone is just so friendly! Something people don’t know about you? This is only my third year of truly competitive diving, before I was just a gymnast who did diving only in the summers for my local pool!

The team; they are my second family and a great group of women to be around . What are your favorite things about JMU? Junior Butterfly/Backstroke New Castle, Del./St. Mark’s Political Science major • Appears in JMU top 10 six times for relays, including the leadoff leg of both the 200 and 400 medley races that set school records at the 2008-09 CAA Meet • Has top-10 times at JMU in the 100 and 200 back as well as 100 fly • Placed seventh in the 100 backstroke at the 0809 CAA Championships. • As a freshman, swam leadoff on school record setting relay for the 200 medley at the 2007-08 CAA Championships • Placed 11th in the 200 backstroke and 15th in the 100 back at the CAA Championships What are your goals for this season? To make the podium in one or more of my three events and to take some records down off the record board . What are your favorite things about JMU? The Swim team, the fact that our pool in Godwin is a purple mess, d-hall breakfasts, kitchen sits, and crazy political science teachers!

Kristen Wolla

Junior Breaststroke/Freestyle Arlington, Va./ Yorktown Elementary Education major • Placed ninth in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at the 08-09 CAA Pod meet. • Had three first-place finishes in the 500 Free in the 08-09 season • As a freshman, swam on record-setting 800 free relay team at the 2007-08 CAA Championships • Won first place in the 100 breaststroke at the Del/VMI dual meet • Competed in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as well as 200 IM at the 07-08 CAA Championships What is your favorite event and why? 25 breaststroke . It may seem easy since it’s only a 25, but it’s hard to get into a good rhythm when you only have 15 yards to do it so it’s a acquired skill to get lightning fast at a 25 breaststroke . The best part of your day at JMU is . . . I would have to say 6:03 pm because chances are that my teammates and I are at D Hall after practice and most likely have finished our first round of dinner and are doing a little D Hall sit before we go up for round 2 .

Jean Rodini

Redshirt Sophomore Diving Midlothian, Va/Midlothian/ William and Mary Business Marketing major • Redshirted 2008-09 season after transfer from William and Mary • Earned points for W&M by placing 16th in threemeter dive at 2007-08 CAA Championships • Posted top marks of 209.03 in the one meter and 206.15 in the three meter with the Tribe What is your favorite event and why? I really like one-meter, because I’ve competed it longer and find it more fun than three meter . What do you enjoy most about JMU Swimming and Diving? I love that practices are actually fun at JMU because of Miss Becky B and my teammates .

Lauren Broussard Sophomore Butterfly La Place, La./Mount Carmel Academy Communications major

• Contributed to school record in the 400 medley relay at CAA Championships as a freshman • Scored in CAA meet with 14th place in 200 butterfly, swimming sixth-best time in JMU history • Placed first in the 200 butterfly against Radford, VMI, and Georgetown, second at Bucknell Invitational, and fourth in CAA Pod Meet. What do you enjoy most about JMU Swimming and Diving? We are truly a family . That means good and bad . no matter what, I know these girls are here for me . Memorable Moments in Swimming & Diving

Allison Keel held the JMU record in the 50 freestyle and the 100 and 200. She won a pair of CAA titles in 2006 in the 100 and 200 free races.

Amanda Kuehl set the six-dive school record in the three-meter dive and won three CAA championships between the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Between her sophomore and junior seasons spanning 2007-09, P.J. Naber set four individual and four relay school records as a sprint freestyler.

Marcy Lipp won JMUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first championship in the 1,650 freestyle, claiming the gold in 1992.

Samantha Smith won the gold medal in both breaststroke events at the 2001 CAA championshps. As a freshman in 2008-09, Nicole Jotso shattered both six-dive school records and qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet.

The 1993-94 JMU women won the CAA championship by more than 200 points. The Dukes have won six CAA titles since 1986.

Tradition of Excellence

Wendy Bryant won consecutive CAA golds in the 200-yard backstroke in 1995 and 1996. She was also a member of seven championship relays. Mary Sink won the one-meter dive in the CAA in 1992 and later served as JMUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diving coach.

Jenny Simmons won five CAA relay races in 1992 and 1993. Her 1992 400-yard freestyle relay squad held the record until 2008. Erin McDonnell earned five individual and nine relay gold medals at the CAA championshps from 1991 to 1994.

Erin McDonnell, Lottie Swanson, and Cindy Walker were each named to the CAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Silver Anniversary Squad in 2009-10 in recognition of the top 25 competitors in league history.

Swanson claimed nine CAA titles in her career and set a pair of records that stood from the early 1990s until 2008.
